Abstract:Severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is commonly seen in intensive care units (ICUs). It is characterized by capillary endothelium and alveolar epithelium damage that results in significant increases in capillary permeability and extravascular lung water. It is difficult to quantify pulmonary edema accurately using conventional imaging. Pulse index continuous cardiac output (PiCCO) is a parameter based on transpulmonary thermodilution that overcomes these shortcomings. Several measurements derived from PiCCO can be determined continuously and accurately, including extravascular lung water index (ELWI), and pulmonary vascular permeability index (PVPI). Several prospective studies have demonstrated that early goal-directed treatment (EGDT) according to these measurements can help with volume management and ultimately reduce the in-hospital mortality rate in critically-ill patients.<a class="ejp-citation-link js-ejp-citation-link">[1]</a>
