Abstract:We demonstrate the in situ synthesis of carbon doped porous silicon (Si/C) nanocomposites by a simple thermal displacement process between Mg2Si and inorganic gas CO2 in one-step. Via the decomposition of Mg2Si, the reduction process occurred between Mg and CO2, leading the uniform doping of many distributed tiny carbon nanoparticles into Si. Meanwhile, the porous structure was formed after an acid treatment. When worked as anodes for lithium-ion batteries, the as-prepared s-porous Si/C nanocomposites exhibited good cycling stability and high-rate capability, which were superior to the porous Si and porous Si/C nanocomposites. It was revealed that the enhanced electrochemical properties could be ascribed to the novel porous structure and doped carbon nanoparticles that can buffer the volume expansion, as well as enhance the electronic conductivity of Si. The reaction mechanism was well investigated by studying the influence of reaction temperature and raw Mg2Si particle size on the morphology and component of the porous Si/C nanocomposites.

Abstract:A hybrid lithium-ion anode material, made of acid-functionalized carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and amino modified Si nanoparticles (SiNPs), was synthesized by fast homogeneous electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Regular distribution of SiNPs in the three dimensional electro-active frameworks with the help of the interactions of surface functional groups can effectively improve the electron transport and restrict volume expansion during Li insertion/extraction. The as-deposited composite film exhibits a stable capacity of 790 mAh g-1 for 100 cycles at a current density of 400 mA g-1. The stability of suspension and weight ratio of Si to CNFs plays the key roles in the electrochemical performance. It provides a possible environmentally friendly and cost-effective preparation method for future high-performance Li-ion battery applications.

Abstract:We report a novel material of Co-Li2O@Si core-shell nanowire array synthesized via the lithiation of pre-synthesized CoO@Si core-shell nanowire arrays during the first cycle. When the potential window versus lithium was controlled between 0.01-1.2 V, the coated Si shell could be electrochemically active, while the Co-Li2O nanowire core could function as a stable mechanical support and an efficient electron conducting pathway during the charge-discharge process. The Co-Li2O@Si core-shell nanowire array anodes exhibit good cyclic stability and high power capability compared to planar Si film electrodes.
High-performance Self-Organized Si Nanocomposite Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Silicon is being investigated extensively as an anodic material for next-generation lithium ion batteries for portable energy storage and electric vehicles. However, the large changes in volume during cycling lead to the breakdown of the conductive network in Si anodes and the formation of an unstable solid-electrolyte interface, resulting in capacity fading. Here, we demonstrate nanoparticles with a Si@Mn22.6Si5.4C4@C double-shell structure and the formation of self-organized Si-Mn-C nanocomposite anodes during the lithiation/delithiation process. The anode consists of amorphous Si particles less than 10 nm in diameter and separated by an interconnected conductive/buffer network, which exhibits excellent charge transfer kinetics and charge/discharge performances. A stable specific capacity of 1100 mAhg(-1) at 100 m.A.g(-1) and a coulombic efficiency of 99.2% after 30 cycles are achieved. Additionally, a rate capacity of 343 mAh.g(-1) and a coulombic efficiency of 99.4% at 12000 mA.g(-1) are also attainable. Owing to its simplicity and applicability, this strategy for improving electrode performance paves a way for the development of high-performance Si-based anodic materials for lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of uniform multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)@Si nanocomposites via the magnesiothermic reduction of pre-synthesized MWCNT@SiO2 nanocables. At first, the acid vapor steaming is used to treat the surface, which can facilitate the uniform deposition of SiO2 layer via the TEOS hydrolysis. Then, the uniform MWCNT@Si nanocomposites are obtained on the basis of MWCNT@SiO2 nanocables via a simple magnesiothermic reduction. When used as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the as-synthesized MWCNT@Si nanocomposites show high reversible capacity and good cycling performance, which is better than bulk Si and bare MWCNTs. It is believed that the good electrochemical performance can be attributed to the novel porous nanostructure and the introduction of MWCNTs that can buffer the volume change, maintain the electrical conductive network, and enhance the electronic conductivity and lithium-ion transport. Abstract:We design a novel Si@graphite@C composite via the pretreatment of graphite, subsequent deposition of Si nanoparticles via chemical vapor deposition, and finally the coating of carbon layer. The enlarged macropores of graphite can accommodate more loading of Si nanoparticles and the use of monosilane gas as source can bring the uniform deposition of Si nanoparticles in the whole graphite microparticles. The Si@graphite@C composite has good electrical conductivity and can well accommodate the volume change during the charge/discharge process, thus result in a good electrochemical performance. Abstract:Abstract We report an effective method for the synthesis of a core-shell Si/C nanocomposite, and its application as anode material for lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-coated Si nanoparticles are formed by emulsion polymerization, and this precursor is heat-treated under argon to generate a Si/C core-shell nanocomposite. The conductive carbon shell envelops the silicon nanoparticles and suppresses aggregation of the nanoparticles during cycling. Meanwhile, the carbon shell combines closely with the nanocores, and significantly enhances the kinetics of lithium intercalation and de-intercalation, as well as the apparent diffusion coefficient of Li-ions. Consequently, the core-shell Si/C nanocomposite exhibits better electrochemical performance than pure Si nanoparticles, indicating that this is a promising approach to improve cyclability and kinetics of nano-anode materials for Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:The extremely large volume variation and poor electronic conductivity of Si anode materials for lithium ion batteries have seriously hampered their performances and practical applications. SiOx materials are regarded as ideal alternatives to high-capacity Si anode materials for Li-ion batteries, since the generated Li2O matrix from Li-SiOx reactions can effectively accommodate the large volume swing of Si. Furthermore, micron-sized particles with much smaller surface area always present higher initial coulombic efficiency and tap density than nanomaterials. Based on the above considerations, SiOx microparticles with homogeneously-embedded Si nanocrystals and nanopores were fabricated by magnesiothermic reduction in this work and were further modified by high-electronic-conductivity and flexible polyaniline (PANI)-Ag shell. Profiting from these favorable features, the obtained SiOx-PANI-Ag micron-composites exhibited better cycling performances (with a reversible capacity of 1149 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles), good initial coulombic efficiency and tap density in comparison with SiOx-based materials in other works. This study promotes us to exploit advanced Si- or Sn-based materials for Li ion batteries and preparing micro/nano complex structures for promising applications.
A Hybrid Structure to Improve Electrochemical Performance of SiO Anode Materials in Lithium-Ion Battery

Abstract:The wide utilization of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) prompts extensive research on the anode materials with large capacity and excellent stability. Despite the attractive electrochemical properties of pure Si anodes outperforming other Si-based materials, its unsafety caused by huge volumetric expansion is commonly admitted. Silicon monoxide (SiO) anode is advantageous in mild volume fluctuation, and would be a proper alternative if the low initial columbic efficiency and conductivity can be ameliorated. Herein, a hybrid structure composed of active material SiO particles and carbon nanofibers (SiO/CNFs) is proposed as a solution. CNFs, through electrospun processes, serve as a conductive skeleton for SiO nanoparticles and enable SiO nanoparticles to be uniformly embedded in. As a result, the SiO/CNF electrochemical performance reaches a peak at 20% the mass ratio of SiO, where the retention rate reaches 73.9% after 400 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g-1, and the discharge capacity after stabilization and 100 cycles are 1.47 and 1.84 times higher than that of pure SiO, respectively. A fast lithium-ion transport rate during cycling is also demonstrated as the corresponding diffusion coefficient of the SiO/CNF reaches ~8 × 10-15 cm2 s-1. This SiO/CNF hybrid structure provides a flexible and cost-effective solution for LIBs and sheds light on alternative anode choices for industrial battery assembly.
Controllable Preparation to Boost High Performance of Nanotubular SiO2@C as Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Due to poor electrical conductivity and significant volume change during the lithiation/delithiation process, the application of silica anode materials for lithium-ion batteries is severely limited. Here, SiO2 nanotubes with a uniform and complete carbon layer were prepared employing ZnO nanorods as templates. The controllable wall thickness of SiO2 nanotubes is about 11 nm, and the thinner wall reduces the lithium-ion diffusion distance and boosts performance. The uniform and complete carbon layer leads to a perfect dispersity of SiO2 nanotubes, enhances the overall electrical conductivity, and also buffers the mechanical stresses caused by volume change, which helps to exhibit high specific capacity and a long cycle life. The nanotubular SiO2@C composite reveals a high discharge specific capacity of about 526.3 mAh g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1 after 500 cycles without significant capacity fade. In addition, it demonstrates excellent rate performance, which can maintain above 420 mAh g−1 even at a current density of 5 A g−1. The strategy may be adopted to prepare other anode materials as well.

Abstract:Constructing a robust structure is crucial for addressing the inherent flaws of SiO-based anode materials, such as significant volume expansion and high ion and electron resistance. Therefore, in this article, we synthesized a SiO-based composite denoted as SiO–SiO2@C via a facile liquid-phase method. This composite possessed a sturdy three-dimensional structure and dual functionality. The superstructure was formed by the carbon-coated amorphous SiO2 nanoparticles surrounding the SiO particles, which endowed the structural stability of SiO–SiO2@C. It is worth noting that the SiO–SiO2@C composite manifested a high ICE of 75.7% and an impressive reversible capacity of 1061.0 mA h g–1 at 0.2 A g–1 after 100 cycles, with a 97% capacity retention compared to the second discharge. Furthermore, this electrode showed exceptional cycle performance of 430.5 mA h g–1 after 700 cycles at 2 A g–1 and rate performance with an average reversible capacity of 703.4 mA h g–1 at 3 A g–1. Overall, the prepared SiO–SiO2@C electrode material displayed a huge opportunity for lithium-ion battery anodes.

Abstract:A Si@C nanocomposite material is prepared via in-situ polymerization of acrylonitrile on the surface of silicon nanoparticles, and followed by carbonization in an inert atmosphere. The obtained Si@C nanocomposite material is composed of a nanosized Si core and a casting carbon shell. Its structure and electrochemical properties are characterized by XRD, TG, Raman, SEM, TEM and charge-discharge performance test. The results obtained in this study show that Si@C nanocomposite is coated by a layer of amorphous carbon which provides a conductive matrix and relieves the dramatically morphological changes of Si upon lithium insertion and extraction. The composite exhibits good capacity retention for use as anode in lithium-ion batteries. This study also paves a facile and industrial scalable way to prepare core/shell structure for high performance anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A silicon based composite (Si@SiO2/CNTs) with outstanding electrochemistry performance has been easily synthesized using a spray drying method; The composite microsphere is mainly made up of carbon nanotubes and the prepared nano silicon particles. With the help of a silane coupling agent, carbon nanotubes tightly intertwined with nano silicon particles and formed microspheres together. On the surface of the prepared nano silicon particles, a layer of oxide film plays a role as a barrier to reduce the rupture of the particles during the lithium intercalation/extraction process. In addition, the added twisted carbon nanotubes can help to maintain the conductive network, thus stabilizing the electrode working environment during the lithium intercalation/extraction process. As a superior anode material, an initial specific discharge capacity of approximately 2846.9 mAh g−1 with a coulombic efficiency of 86 % and a reversible specific capacity of 2035.9 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at a constant density of 500 mA g−1 are obtained.

Abstract:The electrochemical performance of silicon (Si) anode can be improved by transition metal silicide materials because of their excellent electronic conductivity. However, the synthesis of transition metal silicide with controllable nanostructure remains a challenge. Herein, the porous Si/NiSi2/C nanoparticles were synthesized successfully by magnesiothermic co-reduction of silica-coated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The MOFs is used as a sacrificial template because of its controllable size and morphology. The as-prepared Si/NiSi2 was uniformly embedded in amorphous carbon materials derived from MOFs. The NiSi2 and carbon can act as a buffer matrix and facilitate the electronic transmission of Si/NiSi2/C. The nanometer size and porous structure of Si/NiSi2/C can accommodate volume expansion during the cycling process. As a result, the as-prepared Si/NiSi2/C electrode delivered a specific capacity of 1243.6 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at a current density of 1 A g−1. This facile strategy provides the possibility to develop transition metal silicide materials from MOFs for high-performance Si-based anode.

Abstract:Silicon (Si), a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries, usually suffers from low capacity retention and poor rate performance due to its huge volume change issue and low electronic conductivity. The synergistic effect brought by the composite of carbon, metal silicide, and silicon is proven to be an effective measure to enhance the performance of silicon-based anodes. Herein, Cu3Si-modified silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) encapsulated within SiO x and hollow carbon shell (M-Si@H-C) are designed and constructed by an electroless deposition and pyrolysis process, which delivers high specific capacity (1150 mAh g–1 at 0.21 A g–1 and 450 mAh g–1 at 8.4 A g–1) and long cycling stability (86.3% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 1 A g–1). The nanostructure and formation mechanism of the M-Si@H-C is elucidated by employing X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy techniques. The enhancement to the lithium storage performance of the nanostructure is clarified on the basis of the microstructure investigation and electrochemical determination.

Abstract:A novel porous structure MnO-SiOx @C composite has been designed and prepared as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries through scalable spray pyrolysis and a subsequent annealing process. XRD, SEM, TEM, Raman, and BET measurements indicate that the MnO-SiOx @C composite displays a spherical mesoporous structure with SiOx particles, embedded in the porous MnO structure combined with carbon coated on the surfaces. The enhanced electrochemical performance can be attributed to the mutual segregation of the heterogeneous oxides of MnO and SiOx during delithiation and the buffer composition region at the origin of uniform carbon layers and abundant nanopores. In addition, the new phase Mn2SiO4, which is formed in the MnO-SiOx @C composite after 800 ºC, can act as the joint between MnO and SiOx to restrain the strain force originating from the volume change during the charge and discharge process. As a result, the obtained MnO-SiOx @C composite exhibits significantly enhanced electrochemical performance in terms of high Coulombic efficiency, excellent rate capability and good cyclability.

Abstract:Nanostructured silicon-based particles have been widely developed as a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries. However, nanostructuring usually requires complicated procedures and huge environmental pollution, which seriously hinder the commercialization of silicon-based anodes. Here, a scalable micelle-assisted method is developed to generate nanostructured SiOX-based particles by preventing the condensation between the reactive silanol groups. Benefiting from the scalable nanostructuring procedure, the hydrophilic polyethylene oxide segment of F127 is anchored on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) by hydrogen bonding, and the micelle formed by F127 with the silane precursor can further prevent the aggregation of GO sheets during the reduction process, leading to the nanostructured SiOX/C particles are attached to the surface of reduced graphite oxide (rGO). The nanostructured SiOX/C and rGO composites can reduce the crack risk of SiOX during (de)lithiation processes and decrease the diffusion length for Li+, while the uniformly distributed graphene network limits the agglomeration of nanoparticles during cycling and helps to improve electronic conductivity. As a result, the synthesized SiOX-based anode shows excellent cycling stability (>90% capacity retention from the 3rd to 500th) and fast Li + transport performance. This strategy provides a new scalable method to generate nanostructured SiOX-based particles for high-performance batteries.

Abstract:The Si/SiO nanocomposite was synthesized by a sol–gel method in combination with a following heat-treatment process. It was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and capacity measurement as anode material for lithium ion battery. Si nanoparticles were coated with SiO and a core-shell structured nanocomposite was formed. The core-shell Si/SiO nanocomposite displays better reversibility of lithium insertion/extraction and higher coulomb efficiency than virginal Si nanoparticles. The SiO shell envelops the Si nanoparticles to suppress the aggregation of the nanoparticles during cycling. In Situ Synthesis of C/Cu/ZnO Porous Hybrids As Anode Materials for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Porous structure and surface modification have been widely studied in applying metal oxide nanomaterials as Li-ion battery anodes for overcoming problems such as poor conductivity and large volume variation. Here, we demonstrate a direct triple-decomposition process for the in situ synthesis of C/Cu/ZnO porous hybrids. In a typical porous structure, 5-10 nm sized ZnO and Cu nanoparticles aggregate randomly and are modified with carbon layers in thickness of 1 nm. Moreover, the resulted hybrid nanostructures show a high and stable specific capacity of 818 mAh g(-1) at a current rate of 50 mA g(-1) with almost 100% capacity retention for up to 100 cycles when used an anode material for lithium ion batteries. By combination of the structural analyses and electrochemical behaviors, it could be speculated that the porous structure and the modifications of copper nanoparticles and carbon layers are mainly responsible for the dramatically improved electrochemical performance of ZnO anodes.
