Abstract:A water-soluble salen-Co(III) complex was studied as catalyst for hydration of terminal alkynes to methyl ketones in the presence of H2SO4 as a co-catalyst. The products were obtained with excellent yields using relatively low catalyst loadings and a simple protocol. Notably, the products were easily separated from the catalyst after reaction by extraction, and the catalyst could be recovered and reused with only a slight loss of activity.

Abstract:Methods toward the dimerization and homocoupling of terminal alkynes have been established that employ Co complexes along with tBuOK under different atmosphere. A variety of Z-1,3-enynes were furnished with a high Z:E (up to 93:7) ratio in moderate to very good yields under inert atmosphere. Alternatively, the Glaser homocoupling reaction of terminal alkynes was also accomplished with a Co catalyst, successfully affording various 1,3-diynes in excellent yields (up to 93%) under oxygen.

Abstract:Hydration of alkynes to ketones is one of the most atom economical and universal methods for the synthesis of carbonyl compounds. However, the basic reaction usually requires organic ligand catalysts or harsh reaction conditions to insert oxygen into the C≡C bond. Here, we report an inorganic ligand supported cobalt(III) catalyst, (NH 4 ) 3 [CoMo 6 O 18 (OH) 6 ], which is supported by a central cobalt(III) mononucleus and a ring−shaped pure inorganic ligand composed of six Mo VI O 6 octahedrons, avoiding the disadvantages of expensive and unrecyclable organic ligand catalysts or noble metal catalysts. Under mild conditions, cobalt(III) catalyst can be used for the alkynes to ketones. The catalyst is non-toxic, green, environment-friendly, safe and widely used. The catalyst can be recycled at least six times with a negligible effect on activity. At the same time, according to the observation of control experiments, a reasonable mechanism is provided.

A new ligand has been developed for the cobalt hydride catalyst that has been used for a unique Markovnikov selective insertion of terminal alkynes into metal hydride bond. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance to deliver valuable alkene derivatives.

Abstract:Conversion of alkynes into ketones by hydration is one of the most fundamental organic addition reactions. Traditional methods for alkyne hydration suffer from usage of toxic and costly metals, excessive acids, harsh conditions, and long reaction times, bringing about an urgent desire to explore more efficient and green protocols to complete this transformation. A metal-free efficient protocol for the accelerated hydration of alkynes in microdroplets was successfully developed in this work to overcome these drawbacks. The hydration process was finished under room temperature using only 18 mol % sulfuric acid as the catalyst and acetonitrile as the solvent. Complete conversions were feasible on the low millisecond time scale in microdroplets for a wide range of alkynes bearing functional groups, including electron-withdrawing groups and electron-donating groups. This is in sharp contrast to trace amounts of ketones or none in 20 min in bulk phase. Compared to the bulk reaction under the same conditions, the reactions in microdroplets are accelerated by 4 to 5 orders of magnitude as seen by the increase in measured rate constants. Further, the accelerated microdroplet hydration can be scaled up to an acetophenone amount of 57.2 +/- 0.1 mg min(-1) (3.43 +/- 0.01 g h(-1)) by using 2 mol L-1 phenylacetylene sprayed at 300 L min(-1). The microdroplet protocol offers several advantages including ultrahigh acceleration, complete conversion, mild reaction conditions (metal, light, and heat free), and minimal post purification, as well as a wide substrate scope, making it attractive for green and sustainable chemistry.

Abstract:Here, we reported for the first time a mechanistically distinctive cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov-type sequential semihydrogenation/hydrohydrazidation of aliphatic terminal alkynes in one pot. A cobalt hydride species was employed as two roles for both a unique metal-catalyzed Markovnikov-type insertion of the aliphatic terminal alkynes and then metal-catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer of alkenes. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and step economy. The hydrazone products could be easily transferred to various valuable amine derivatives.

Abstract:Hydration reactions consist of the introduction of a molecule of water into a chemical compound and are particularly useful to transform alkynes into carbonyls, which are strategic intermediates in the synthesis of a plethora of compounds. Herein we demonstrate that L-cysteine can catalyse the hydration of activated alkynes in a very effective and fully regioselective manner to access important building blocks in synthetic chemistry such as β-ketosulfones, amides and esters, in aqueous media. The mild reaction conditions facilitated the integration with enzyme catalysis to access chiral β-hydroxy sulfones from the corresponding alkynes in a one-pot cascade process in good yields and excellent enantiomeric ratios. These findings pave the way towards establishing a general method for metal-free, cost-effective, and more sustainable alkyne hydration processes.

Abstract:A highly chemo-, regio- and stereoselective cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov hydrosilylation of alkynes was developed. Various functionalized groups, such as halides, free alcohols, free aniline, ketones, esters, amides, and nitriles are tolerated, which may lead to further applications and late-stage derivatizations. To date, this is the most efficient cobalt catalytic system (TOF=65520h(-1); TOF=turnover frequency) for hydrosilylation of alkynes. The Hiyama-Denmark cross-coupling reactions of vinylsilanes with aryl iodides underwent smoothly to afford 1,1-diarylethenes. A unique regioselectivity-controllable hydrosilylation/hydroboration reaction of alkynes was also described.

Abstract:Here, we reported a cobalt-hydride-catalyzed Markovnikov-type hydroallylation of terminal alkynes with allylic electrophile to access valuable and branched skipped dienes (1,4-dienes) with good regioselectivity. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and exceptional substrate scope. The reactions could be carried out in gram-scale with TON (turn over number) up to 1160, and the products could be easily derivatized. The preliminary mechanism of electrophilic allylation of α-selective cobalt alkenyl intermediate was proposed based on deuterium labeling experiment and kinetic studies.

Abstract:A strategy for the synthesis of alpha-alkylated ketones via one-pot, sequential, catalytic hydration of alkynes and alpha-alkylation with alcohols was proposed and successfully accomplished. In the presence of chloro[1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl) imidazol-2-ylidene] gold(I) ([(IPr) AuCl])/silver triflate (AgOTf) and water, a series of alkynes are first hydrated to give the corresponding methyl ketones, which in turn are alpha-alkylated by adding pentamethylcyclopentadienyliridium-(III) chloride ([Cp*IrCl2](2))/KOtBu and alcohols to the reaction mixture. Notably, this reaction is highly attractive because of easily available starting materials, high atom efficiency, good to excellent yields, and minimal consumption of chemicals and energy. The present research will also facilitate the development of one-pot, sequential, catalytic reactions based on "hydrogen autotransfer" (or "hydrogen-borrowing") processes.

Abstract:A highly regio- and enantioselective cobalt-catalyzed hydroboration/hydrogenation of internal alkynes with HBpin and a hydrogen balloon in one pot was developed. A new type of chiral imidazoline iminopyridine (IIP) ligand was introduced for the first time in this novel and efficient strategy. This protocol used relatively simple and available starting materials with good functional group tolerance to construct more valuable chiral secondary organoboronates. The primary mechanistic studies illustrated that the cobalt-catalyzed regioselective hydroboration of alkynes did initially occur followed by HBpin-promoted and cobalt-catalyzed enantioselective hydrogenation of alkenylboronates.

Abstract:The hydration of haloalkynes to give -halomethyl ketones was achieved based on a combination of a Cu(OAc)(2) catalyst and a TFA (trifluoroacetic acid) promoter. This is the first synthesis of chloro/bromo/iodo methyl ketones through a hydration reaction catalyzed by a recyclable catalytic system. The catalytic system has a wide substrate scope and excellent chemoselectivity, and the procedure can also be scaled up.

Abstract:Developing simple and benign protocols for synthesizing alkenylboronates is crucial as they are synthetically valuable compounds in various organic transformations. In this work, we report a straightforward ligand‐free protocol for synthesizing alkenylboronates via atom‐economical hydroboration of alkynes with HBpin catalyzed by a manganese salt. The reaction shows a high level of chemo and regioselectivity for the terminal alkynes and exclusively produces E‐selective alkenylboronates. The hydroboration scope is vast, with the resilience of a range of synthetically beneficial functionalities, such as halides, ether, alkenyl, silyl and thiophenyl groups. This reaction proceeds through the involvement of a metal‐hydride intermediate. The developed alkenylboronate can be smoothly converted to useful C−C, C−N and C−I bond‐forming reactions.
