Abstract:Knowledge of atomic interactions with high-energy photons or particles has opened a window to the microscopic structures of materials. In particular, X-rays and neutrons interact with electrons and nuclei of atoms in different ways, which enables their complementary scattering, spectroscopic, and imaging capabilities for structural characterizations. In the past decades, techniques based on X-ray and neutron interactions, capable of being time-resolved and combined, have been well developed for encoding structures in various length, elemental and temporal levels, and, in turn, have ignited breakthroughs in the field of battery science and engineering. Herein are reviewed the advanced in situ X-ray and neutron techniques for studying lithium-ion batteries, which offer dynamic observations of chemical, electronic, and geometric changes during realistic battery operations. For each of the techniques, with a brief description of the theory on account of characterizing principles is given (i.e., scattering, excitation, and emission), followed by an introduction of operando methodologies including instruments, setups, and cell designs employed in synchrotron and neutron beamlines. Finally, a few practical examples are presented to demonstrate the applicability of these techniques in studying Li-ion batteries, with a particular emphasis on each of their structural sensitivities at various time, elemental, and length levels.

Abstract:In operando tracking of the complex phase transformation pathway in battery materials and correlating morphology change, chemical composition, and phase structure with electrochemical performance is critical in exploring advanced battery systems with high energy density and safety. Emerging synchrotron X‐ray imaging techniques with high spatial, temporal, and chemical resolution provides unique tools to elucidate the underlying mechanisms in battery electrochemical reactions. Here, the recent significant progress in a number of rapidly growing synchrotron X‐ray imaging techniques that have been applied in battery research under in operando conditions is summarized. The basic principle and in operando experimental setup of these X‐ray imaging methods are briefly introduced. The unique capabilities of each X‐ray technique and the critical achieved scientific insights in a variety of battery materials are discussed, with particular emphasis on how these in operando X‐ray imaging techniques can advance fundamental understanding of the complex battery electrochemistry. Perspectives on the challenges and future trends in technology development for in operando X‐ray imaging study are also briefly proposed.

Abstract:Rechargeable batteries that make renewable energy resources feasible for electrification technologies have been extensively investigated. Their corresponding performance is strongly dependent on the structural characteristics and chemical dynamics of internal electrode and electrolyte materials under operating conditions. To enhance battery performance and lifetime, a comprehensive understanding of the structure‐dynamics‐performance correlation of such materials under different working conditions is of great significance. Fortunately, in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) encompassing high‐resolution imaging, diffraction, and spectroscopic analysis, offers unprecedented insights into the nano/atomic scale structural changes and degradation pathways of rechargeable battery materials under operational conditions. Such insights are pivotal for a deep‐rooted understanding of reaction mechanisms and the structure‐activity interplay within battery materials. This work, therefore, highlights the advances in in situ TEM's utility in unveiling dynamic chemical and physical changes in real‐time within battery materials of rechargeable batteries. Electrochemical processes and degradation mechanisms are systematically explored and summarized. Moreover, the technical progress, challenges, and valuable insights provided by in situ TEM techniques for addressing critical issues in battery materials are underscored. The work concludes with a discussion of emerging research directions that hold the potential to revolutionize the renewable energy field in the near future.

Abstract:In lithium-ion batteries, the electrochemical reaction between the electrodes and lithium is a critical process that controls the capacity, cyclability and reliability of the battery. Despite intensive study, the atomistic mechanism of the electrochemical reactions occurring in these solid-state electrodes remains unclear. Here, we show that in situ transmission electron microscopy can be used to study the dynamic lithiation process of single-crystal silicon with atomic resolution. We observe a sharp interface (∼1 nm thick) between the crystalline silicon and an amorphous Li x Si alloy. The lithiation kinetics are controlled by the migration of the interface, which occurs through a ledge mechanism involving the lateral movement of ledges on the close-packed {111} atomic planes. Such ledge flow processes produce the amorphous Li x Si alloy through layer-by-layer peeling of the {111} atomic facets, resulting in the orientation-dependent mobility of the interfaces.

Abstract:The electrode/electrolyte interface plays a critical role in the performance of a Li-ion battery. In view of the dynamic and complex nature of the interface, in situ research approaches can provide valuable information of interfacial phenomena during battery operation. In situ scanning probe microscopy (SPM) is a powerful technique used for the interfacial investigation of the Li-ion batteries. The versatile SPM techniques and their various operation modes have been utilized to measure the morphology and other properties of the electrode interface at high resolution. Herein, we discuss the related SPM techniques to study the topography, mechanics and electrochemistry research of electrodes. Recent progresses of in situ SPM research on the electrode/electrolyte interface are summarized. Finally, the outlook of the technique is discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) have been widely used in electric vehicles and energy storage industries. An understanding of the reaction processes and degradation mechanism in LIBs is crucial for optimizing their performance. In situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) as a surface‐sensitive tool has been applied in the real‐time monitoring of the interfacial processes within lithium batteries. Here, we reviewed the recent progress of the application of in situ AFM for battery characterizations, including LIBs, lithium–sulfur batteries, and lithium–oxygen batteries. We summarized advances in the in situ AFM for recording electrode/electrolyte interface, mechanical properties, morphological changes, and surface evolution. Future directions of in situ AFM for the development of lithium batteries were also discussed in this review.

Abstract:The amount and kinetics of intercalation and extraction of electrons and ions in electrodes is critical for high-performance Li-ion batteries (LIBs), which are rather complicated involving tight interactions of both electrochemistry and mechanics. These coupled electro-chemo-mechanical behaviors could substantially influence the number and kinetics of transferred ions and electrons and ultimately affect the performance of the entire battery system. Furthermore, the emerged surface/interface coating–engineered electrodes in both cathode and anode materials can significantly regulate the performance of batteries, while the underlying mechanism should urgently be unveiled. With the capability of resolving the structure and chemistry, advanced electron microscopy is an ideal technique for directly visualizing the interplay between electrochemistry and mechanics in both neat and modified electrode materials at atomic-to-bulk scale. This review first summaries recent progress in electron microscopy regarding electro-chemo-mechanical behaviors of both anode and cathode materials, which includes techniques of in situ/ex situ (scanning) transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. In addition, as a comparison, the electron microscopy of how surface/interface coatings regulated electrodes is further represented. Finally, the major challenges and opportunities of electron microcopy techniques are outlined for rechargeable ion batteries. An in-depth understanding of the electrochemistry-mechanics interaction in electrodes could describe the full mechanism that governs the Li-storage performance and then provide fundamental guidelines for target-oriented LIB design and optimization.

Abstract:In situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) offers a good way to investigate the structural evolution during lithiation and delithiation processes. In this paper, the dynamical morphological evolution of 3D-line-structured/unstructured Si/C composite electrodes was observed by in situ SEM. The investigation revealed the microstructural origin of large charge capacity for 3D-line-structured anodes. Based on this proposed mechanism, a coarse optimization of 3D-line-structured anodes was proposed. These results shed light on the unique advantages of using an in situ SEM technique when studying realistic bulk batteries and designing 3D electrode structures.

Abstract:<p>Ion migration is the most fundamental process in the field of energy storage and conversion. During the charge-discharge cycle, the (de)intercalation of guest ions in solid host particles as electrode materials change the distribution of element, phase and stress in the particle and give rise to crushing and degradation, which will influence the electrochemical behavior of the particles. New methods are constantly being proposed to probe the electrochemical reactions on individual particle for understanding the mechanism of the process. In this short review, we highlight some pioneer works from two different perspectives, namely direct electrochemical detection methods, such as nano-impact method, nanoprobe detection and flowing particle analysis, and indirect optical analysis methods utilizing X-ray imaging, infrared near-field nanoscopy, Raman microscopy and surface plasmon resonance microscopy.</p>

Abstract:Solid-state lithium batteries (SSLBs) are considered one of the most promising energy storage systems due to their high energy density and long-range safety; however, they suffer from severe interfacial issues. To improve the interfacial compatibility and electrochemical performance of SSLBs, it is crucial to investigate the dynamic evolution of electrodes, solid-state electrolytes, and their interfaces in real time during the charge/discharge process and to deeply understand the interfacial mechanism. This review mainly focuses on the key in situ visualization methods, such as scanning probe microscopy, electron microscopy, X-ray microscopy, and optical microscopy, which reveal the evolution of morphology and structure in a working SSLB, including (1) the phase transition of the cathode material and the formation of the cathode/electrolyte interfacial layer; (2) the dynamic evolution of the solid-state electrolyte; and (3) lithium deposition/dissolution at the anode/electrolyte interface, the kinetics of lithium dendrites growth, and the formation of solid electrolyte interphases. It provides straightforward evidence for the interfacial evolution and degradation mechanism in SSLBs, which is beneficial to guide the optimization and improvement of battery materials and electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Nowadays, in-situ/operando characterization becomes one of the most powerful as well as available means to monitor intricate reactions and investigate energy-storage mechanisms within advanced batteries. The new applications and novel devices constructed in recent years are necessary to be reviewed for inspiring subsequent studies. Hence, we summarize the progress of in-situ/operando techniques employed in rechargeable batteries. The members of this large family are divided into three sections for introduction, including bulk material, electrolyte/electrode interface and gas evolution. In each part,various energy-storage systems are mentioned and the related experimental details as well as data analysis are discussed. The simultaneous strategies of various in-situ methods are highlighted as well. Finally,current challenges and potential solutions are concluded towards the rising influence and enlarged appliance of in-situ/operando techniques in the battery research.
Nanoscale imaging of fundamental li battery chemistry: solid-electrolyte interphase formation and preferential growth of lithium metal nanoclusters

Abstract:The performance characteristics of Li-ion batteries are intrinsically linked to evolving nanoscale interfacial electrochemical reactions. To probe the mechanisms of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation and to track Li nucleation and growth mechanisms from a standard organic battery electrolyte (LiPF6 in EC:DMC), we used in situ electrochemical scanning transmission electron microscopy (ec-S/TEM) to perform controlled electrochemical potential sweep measurements while simultaneously imaging site-specific structures resulting from electrochemical reactions. A combined quantitative electrochemical measurement and STEM imaging approach is used to demonstrate that chemically sensitive annular dark field STEM imaging can be used to estimate the density of the evolving SEI and to identify Li-containing phases formed in the liquid cell. We report that the SEI is approximately twice as dense as the electrolyte as determined from imaging and electron scattering theory. We also observe site-specific locations where Li nucleates and grows on the surface and edge of the glassy carbon electrode. Lastly, this report demonstrates the investigative power of quantitative nanoscale imaging combined with electrochemical measurements for studying fluid-solid interfaces and their evolving chemistries.

Abstract:For rechargeable batteries, ionic transport within the electrode materials is a critical process that controls the rate capability and energy efficiency of the battery. Despite substantial studies, the atomistic observation of the interfacial ionic transport and electrochemical reactions occurring between the solid-state electrodes is lacking. Here, in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is used to deliberately design an unusual sample configuration, enabling dynamic observation of the sodium ionic transport within a single-crystal nanostructure and between different few-layer phosphorene nanosheets. An unhindered and reversible ionic shuttling between few-layer phosphorene is directly observed in real time. In addition, it is found that sodium transport kinetics are closely related to the interface orientation and the intimate contact between solid electrodes plays a significant role in inhibiting dendrite growth. Furthermore, by fast TEM imaging with approximate to 40 ms resolution a unique stripe-like sodium transport behavior is observed in phosphorene, and the multiple sodium ionic transport pathways at the interfaces with atomic spatial resolution are revealed. This work may supply enlightening insights into understanding the solid-solid interfacial electrochemistry between electrode materials.
Probing Lithium Ion Transport at Individual Interfaces

Abstract:Ion transport across solid solid interfaces is often slower than through the bulk of a material, impeding the charge and discharge rate of batteries. Designing highly conductive interfaces is challenging due to the need to probe ion conduction at individual interfaces and correlate it with the local structure. In this study, we address this challenge by enabling the simultaneous measurements of local Li-dominated optical phonons and ion distributions, using high-energy and high-spatial-resolution spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). Further, this method allows for a direct correlation of ion conduction with interfacial structures identified by STEM imaging. By examining diverse individual interfaces of LiCoO2, we reveal the sensitivity of ion conduction to interface atomic-scale structure and chemistry. Our method enables correlative analysis of ion transport behavior, and atomic and band structures, and can serve as a robust experimental approach for identifying interface structures that offer high conductivity and cyclability for batteries.

Abstract:The solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) is probably the least understood component in Li-ion batteries. Considerable effort has been put into understanding its formation and electrochemistry under realistic battery conditions, but mechanistic insights have mostly been inferred indirectly. Here we show the formation of the SEI between a graphite anode and a carbonate electrolyte through combined atomic-scale microscopy and in situ and operando techniques. In particular, we weigh the graphitic anode during its initial lithiation process with an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance, which unequivocally identifies lithium fluoride and lithium alkylcarbonates as the main chemical components at different potentials. In situ gas analysis confirms the preferential reduction of cyclic over acyclic carbonate molecules, making its reduction product the major component in the SEI. We find that SEI formation starts at graphite edge sites with dimerization of solvated Li + intercalation between graphite layers. We also show that this lithium salt, at least in its nascent form, can be re-oxidized, despite the general belief that an SEI is electrochemically inert and its formation irreversible.

Abstract:The development of rechargeable batteries with high performance is considered to be a feasible way to satisfy the increasing needs of electric vehicles and portable devices. It is of vital importance to design electrodes with high electrochemical performance and to understand the nature of the electrode/electrolyte interfaces during battery operation, which allows a direct observation of the complicated chemical and physical processes within the electrodes and electrolyte, and thus provides real-time information for further design and optimization of the battery performance. Here, the recent progress in in situ techniques employed for the investigations of material structural evolutions is described, including characterization using neutrons, X-ray diffraction, and nuclear magnetic resonance. In situ techniques utilized for in-depth uncovering the electrode/electrolyte phase/interface change mechanisms are then highlighted, including transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The real-time monitoring of lithium dendrite growth and in situ detection of gas evolution during charge/discharge processes are also discussed. Finally, the major challenges and opportunities of in situ characterization techniques are outlined toward new developments of rechargeable batteries, including innovation in the design of compatible in situ cells, applications of dynamic analysis, and in situ electrochemistry under multi-stimuli. A clear and in-depth understanding of in situ technique applications and the mechanisms of structural evolutions, surface/interface changes, and gas generations within rechargeable batteries is given here.

In situ analytical techniques for battery interface analysis

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries, simply known as lithium batteries, are distinct among high energy density charge-storage devices. The power delivery of batteries depends upon the electrochemical performances and the stability of the electrode, electrolytes and their interface. Interfacial phenomena of the electrode/electrolyte involve lithium dendrite formation, electrolyte degradation and gas evolution, and a semi-solid protective layer formation at the electrode-electrolyte interface, also known as the solid-electrolyte interface (SEI). The SEI protects electrodes from further exfoliation or corrosion and suppresses lithium dendrite formation, which are crucial needs for enhancing the cell performance. This review covers the compositional, structural and morphological aspects of SEI, both artificially and naturally formed, and metallic dendrites using in situ/in operando cells and various in situ analytical tools. Critical challenges and the historical legacy in the development of in situ/in operando electrochemical cells with some reports on state-of-the-art progress are particularly highlighted. The present compilation pinpoints the emerging research opportunities in advancing this field and concludes on the future directions and strategies for in situ/in operando analysis.

Abstract:The electrochemical reaction mainly occurs at the electrode/electrolyte interface in the electrochemical system. For a fundamental insight into the interfacial reaction mechanism, in situ/operando analysis of the interfacial evolution at the microscale is essential. Scanning probe microscopy (SPM), noted for its high spatial resolution, real-time imaging, and multifunctional detection, is considered as one of the most important in situ analytical tools for the electrochemical interfaces from the atomic/molecular scale to the nanoscale. This review first introduces the brief principles of typical SPM, such as scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electrochemical microscopy. The applications of in situ SPM in surface and interface analysis for electrochemical energy systems, including electrocatalysts and energy storage batteries, are then presented.
