Abstract:In this paper we study transitions of atoms between energy levels of several number-theory-inspired atom potentials, under the effect of time-dependent perturbations. First, we simulate in detail the case of a trap whose one-particle spectrum is given by prime numbers. We investigate one-body Rabi oscillations and the excitation lineshape for two resonantly coupled energy levels. We also show that techniques from quantum control are effective in reducing the transition time, compared to the case of a periodic perturbation. Next, we investigate cascades of such transitions. To this end, we pose the following question: can one construct a quantum system where the existence of a continuous resonant cascade is predicted on the validity of a particular statement in number theory? We find that a one-body trap with a log-natural spectrum, parametrically driven with a perturbation of a log-natural frequency, provides such a quantum system. Here, powers of a given natural number will form a ladder of equidistant energy levels; absence of gaps in this ladder is an indication of the validity of the number theory statement in question. Ideas for two more resonance cascade experiments are presented as well: they are designed to illustrate the validity of the Diophantus-Brahmagupta-Fibonacci identity (the set of sums of two squares of integers is closed under multiplication) and the validity of the Goldbach conjecture (every even number is a sum of two primes).

On Schrödingerist Quantum Thermodynamics

Abstract:From the point of view of Schrödingerism, a wavefunction-only philosophy, thermodynamics must be recast in terms of an ensemble of wavefunctions, rather than classical particle configurations or "found" values of Copenaghen Quantum Mechanics. Recapitulating the historical sequence, we consider here several models of magnets that classically can exhibit a phase transition to a low-temperature magnetized state. We formulate wavefunction analogues including a "Schrödingerist QUantum Ising Model" (SQUIM), a "Schrödingerist Curie-Weiss Model"(SCWM), and others. We show that the SQUIM with free boundary conditions and distinguishable "spins" has no finite-temperature phase transition, which we attribute to entropy swamping energy. The SCWM likewise, even assuming exchange symmetry in the wavefunction (in this case the analytical argument is not totally satisfactory and we helped ourself with a computer analysis). But a variant model with "Wavefunction Energy" (introduced in prior communications about Schrödingerism and the Measurement Problem) does have a phase transition to a magnetised state. The three results together suggest that magnetization in large wavefunction spin chains appears if and only if we consider indistinguishable particles and block macroscopic dispersion (i.e. macroscopic superpositions) by energy conservation. Our principle technique involves transforming the problem to one in probability theory, then applying results from Large Deviations, particularly the Gärtner-Ellis Theorem. Finally, we discuss Gibbs vs. Boltzmann/Einstein entropy in the choice of the quantum thermodynamic ensemble, as well as open problems. Abstract:This article is the second in a series of two presenting the Scale Relativistic approach to non-differentiability in mechanics and its relation to quantum mechanics. Here, we show Schroedinger's equation to be a reformulation of Newton's fundamental relation of dynamics as generalized to non-differentiable geometries in the first paper \cite{paper1}. It motivates an alternative interpretation of the other axioms of standard quantum mechanics in a coherent picture. This exercise validates the Scale Relativistic approach and, at the same time, it allows to identify macroscopic chaotic systems considered at time scales exceeding their horizon of predictability as candidates in which to search for quantum-like structuring or behavior.
On the exact solution for the Schrödinger equation

Abstract:For almost 75 years, the general solution for the Schrödinger equation was assumed to be generated by a time-ordered exponential known as the Dyson series. We discuss under which conditions the unitarity of this solution is broken, and additional singular dynamics emerges. Then, we provide an alternative construction that is manifestly unitary, regardless of the choice of the Hamiltonian, and study various aspects of the implications. The new construction involves an additional self-adjoint operator that might evolve in a non-gradual way. Its corresponding dynamics for gauge theories exhibit the behavior of a collective object governed by a singular Liouville's equation that performs transitions at a measure $0$ set. Our considerations show that Schrödinger's and Liouville's equations are, in fact, two sides of the same coin, and together they become the unified description of quantum systems.

Abstract:Within the framework of the quantum-statistical approach, utilizing both non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and Lindblad’s jump operators, one can derive various generalizations of the von Neumann equation for reduced density operators, also known as hybrid master equations. If one considers the evolution of pure states only, i.e., disregarding the coherence between states and spontaneous transitions from pure to mixed states, then one can resort to quantum-mechanical equations of the Schrödinger type. We derive them from the hybrid master equations and study their main properties, which indicate that our equations have a larger range of applicability compared to other generalized Schrödinger equations proposed hitherto. Among other features, they can describe not only systems which remain in the stationary eigenstates of the Hamiltonian as time passes, but also those which evolve from those eigenstates. As an example, we consider a simple but important model, a quantum harmonic oscillator driven by both Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian terms, and derive its classical limit, which turns out to be the damped harmonic oscillator. Using this model, we demonstrate that the effects of dissipative environments of different types can cancel each other, thus resulting in an effectively dissipation-free classical system. Another discussed phenomenon is whether a non-trivial quantum system can reduce to a classical system in free motion, i.e., without experiencing any classical Newtonian forces. This uncovers a large class of quantum-mechanical non-Hamiltonian systems whose dynamics are not determined by conventional mechanics’ potentials and forces, but rather come about through quantum statistical effects caused by the system’s environment.

Abstract:These notes investigate the time evolution of quantum systems, and in particular the rigorous derivation of effective equations approximating the many-body Schrödinger dynamics in certain physically interesting regimes. The focus is primarily on the derivation of time-dependent effective theories (non-equilibrium question) approximating many-body quantum dynamics. The book is divided into seven sections, the first of which briefly reviews the main properties of many-body quantum systems and their time evolution. Section 2 introduces the mean-field regime for bosonic systems and explains how the many-body dynamics can be approximated in this limit using the Hartree equation. Section 3 presents a method, based on the use of coherent states, for rigorously proving the convergence towards the Hartree dynamics, while the fluctuations around the Hartree equation are considered in Section 4. Section 5 focuses on a discussion of a more subtle regime, in which the many-body evolution can be approximated by means of the nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Section 6 addresses fermionic systems (characterized by antisymmetric wave functions); here, the fermionic mean-field regime is naturally linked with a semiclassical regime, and it is proven that the evolution of approximate Slater determinants can be approximated using the nonlinear Hartree-Fock equation. In closing, Section 7 reexamines the same fermionic mean-field regime, but with a focus on mixed quasi-free initial data approximating thermal states at positive temperature.
A Generalized Analytical Mechanics in which Quantum Phenomena Appear

Abstract:Currently, dynamics of a massive macroparticle is given by classical analytical mechanics (CM), while that of a massive micro one is given by quantum mechanics (QM). We propose a mechanics effective for both: We transform, under coordinate transformation, the covariant tensor of order two underlying the kinetic energy term of the Hamilton-Jacobi (H-J) eq. of CM, not with the action of the diffeomorphism group, but with an action of an extended diffeomorphism group. Then, the H-J eq., a first-order partial differential eq., is modified to a third-order one. The Euler-Lagrange eq. of CM, a second-order ordinary differential eq., related to the H-J eq. through action integral of the least action principle is accordingly modified to a fourth-order one. We thus obtain a mechanics which, because of the higher-order eqs., accommodates phenomena corresponding to quantum phenomena. Energy of a particle in a confining potential is quantized to the same values as those of QM. Particle distribution in an ensemble disagrees with that of QM, but agrees with experiments within experimental uncertainty. The mechanics therefore is a testable alternative to QM.

Abstract:We review an explicit approach to obtaining numerical solutions of the Schrödinger equation that is conceptionally straightforward and capable of significant accuracy and efficiency. The method and its efficacy are illustrated with several examples. Because of its explicit nature, the algorithm can be readily extended to systems with a higher number of spatial dimensions. We show that the method also generalizes the staggered-time approach of Visscher and allows for the accurate calculation of the real and imaginary parts of the wave function separately.

Schrodinger revisited: an algebraic approach

Abstract:Starting with the quantum Liouville equation, we write the density operator as the product of elements respectively in the left and right ideals of an operator algebra and find that the Schrodinger picture may be expressed through two representation independent algebraic forms in terms of the density and phase operators. These forms are respectively the continuity equation, which involves the commutator of the Hamiltonian with the density operator, and an equation for the time development of the phase operator that involves the anti-commutator of the Hamiltonian with this density operator. We show that this latter equation plays two important roles: (i) it expresses the conservation of energy in a system where energy is well defined and (ii) it provides a simple way to evaluate the gauge changes that occur in the Aharonov-Bohm, the Aharonov-Casher, and Berry phase effects. Both these operator (i.e. purely algebraic) equations also allow us to re-examine the Bohm interpretation, showing that it is in fact possible to construct Bohm interpretations in representations other than the x-representation. We discuss the meaning of the Bohm interpretation in the light of these new results in terms of non-commutative structures and this enables us to clarify its relation to standard quantum mechanics.

Resonance Cascades and Number Theory

Abstract:In this article, we are interested in situations where the existence of a contiguous cascade of quantum resonant transitions is predicated on the validity of a particular statement in number theory. The setting is a tailored one-atom one-dimensional potential with a prescribed spectrum, under a weak periodic perturbation. The former is, by now, an experimental reality [D. Cassettari, G. Mussardo and A. Trombettoni, PNAS Nexus {\bf 2}, pgac279 (2022)]. As a case study, we look at the following trivial statement: "Any power of $3$ is an integer." Consequently, we "test" this statement in a numerical experiment where we demonstrate an unimpeded upward mobility along an equidistant, $\ln(3)$-spaced subsequence of the energy levels of a potential with a log-natural spectrum, under a frequency $\ln(3)$ time-periodic perturbation. We further show that when we "remove" $9$ from the set of integers -- by excluding the corresponding energy level from the spectrum -- the cascade halts abruptly.

Simulating the dynamics of large many-body quantum systems with Schrödinger-Feynman techniques

Abstract:The development of powerful numerical techniques has drastically improved our understanding of quantum matter out of equilibrium. Inspired by recent progress in the area of noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices, this paper highlights hybrid Schrödinger-Feynman techniques as an innovative approach to efficiently simulate certain aspects of many-body quantum dynamics on classical computers. To this end, we explore the nonequilibrium dynamics of two large subsystems, which interact sporadically in time, but otherwise evolve independently from each other. We consider subsystems with tunable disorder strength, relevant in the context of many-body localization, where one subsystem can act as a bath for the other. Importantly, studying the full interacting system, we observe that signatures of thermalization are enhanced compared to the reference case of having two independent subsystems. Notably, with the here proposed Schrödinger-Feynman method, we are able to simulate the pure-state survival probability in systems significantly larger than accessible by standard sparse-matrix techniques.

Abstract:This article motivates and presents the scale relativistic approach to non-differentiability in mechanics and its relation to quantum mechanics. It stems from the scale relativity proposal to extend the principle of relativity to resolution-scale transformations, which leads to considering non-differentiable dynamical paths. We first define a complex <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">scale-covariant time-differential operator</em> and show that mechanics of non-differentiable paths is implemented in the same way as classical mechanics but with the replacement of the time derivative and velocity with the time-differential operator and associated complex velocity. With this, the generalized form of Newton's fundamental relation of dynamics is shown to take the form of a Langevin equation in the case of stationary motion characterized by a null average classical velocity. The numerical integration of the Langevin equation in the case of a harmonic oscillator taken as an example reveals the same statistics as the stationary solutions of the Schrödinger equation for the same problem. This motivates the rest of the paper, which shows Schrödinger's equation to be a reformulation of Newton's fundamental relation of dynamics as generalized to non-differentiable geometries and leads to an alternative interpretation of the other axioms of standard quantum mechanics in a coherent picture. This exercise validates the scale relativistic approach and, at the same time, it allows to envision macroscopic chaotic systems observed at resolution time-scales exceeding their horizon of predictability as candidates in which to search for <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">quantum-like</em> dynamics and structures.

Abstract:We describe a theory of finite sets, and investigate the analogue of Dedekind's theory of natural number systems (simply infinite systems) in this theory. Unlike the infinitary case, in our theory, natural number systems come in differing lengths and with different closure properties. We give examples of natural number systems incomparable in length; we define hierarchies of natural number systems closed under increasingly powerful functions; and we describe a method by which to construct natural number systems with given closure properties. These natural number systems form natural models for various systems of weak arithmetic.

Abstract:The presence of pairing correlations within the time-dependent density-functional-theory (TDDFT) extension to superfluid systems is tantamount to the presence of a quantum collision integral in the evolution equations, which leads to an obviously non-Markovian behavior of the single-particle occupation probabilities, unexpected in a traditional quantum extension of kinetic equations. The quantum generalization of the Boltzmann equation, based on a collision integral in terms of phase-space occupation probabilities, is the most used approach to describe nuclear dynamics and which by construction has a Markovian character. By contrast, the extension of TDDFT to superfluid systems has similarities with the Baym and Kadanoff kinetic formalism, which, however, is formulated with much more complicated evolution equations with long-time memory terms and nonlocal interactions. The irreversibility of quantum dynamics is properly characterized using the canonical wave functions/natural orbitals and the associated canonical occupation probabilities, which provide the smallest possible representation of any fermionic many-body wave function. In this basis, one can evaluate the orbital entanglement entropy, which is an excellent measure of the nonequilibrium dynamics of an isolated system. To explore the phenomena of memory effects and irreversibility, we investigate the use of canonical wave functions/natural orbitals in nuclear many-body calculations, assessing their utility for static calculations, dynamics, and symmetry restoration. As the number of single-particle states is generally quite large, it is highly desirable to work in the canonical basis whenever possible, preferably with a cutoff. We show that truncating the number of canonical wave functions can be a valid approach in the case of static calculations, but that such a truncation is not valid for time-dependent calculations, as it leads to the violation of continuity equation, energy conservation, and other observables, as well as an inaccurate representation of the dynamics. Indeed, in order to describe the dynamics of a fissioning system within a TDDFT framework all the canonical states must be included in the calculation. Abstract:This article explains and illustrates the use of a set of coupled dynamical equations, second order in a fictitious time, which converges to solutions of stationary Schrödinger equations with additional constraints. We include three qualitative different numerical examples: the radial Schrödinger equation for the hydrogen atom; the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator with degenerate excited states; and finally a non-linear Schrödinger equation for rotating states. The presented method is intuitive, with analogies in classical mechanics for damped oscillators, and easy to implement, either in own coding, or with software for dynamical systems. Hence, we find it suitable to introduce it in a continuation course in quantum mechanics or generally in applied mathematics courses which contain computational parts.

Abstract:We demonstrate an exact equivalence between classical population dynamics and Lindbladian evolution admitting a dark state and obeying a set of certain local symmetries. We then introduce {\em quantum population dynamics} as models in which this local symmetry condition is relaxed. This allows for non-classical processes in which animals behave like Schrödinger's cat and enter superpositions of live and dead states, thus resulting in coherent superpositions of different population numbers. We develop a field theory treatment of quantum population models as a synthesis of Keldysh and third quantization techniques and draw comparisons to the stochastic Doi-Peliti field theory description of classical population models. We apply this formalism to study a prototypical ``Schrödigner cat'' population model on a $d$-dimensional lattice, which exhibits a phase transition between a dark extinct phase and an active phase that supports a stable quantum population. Using a perturbative renormalization group approach, we find a critical scaling of the Schrödinger cat population distinct from that observed in both classical population dynamics and usual quantum phase transitions.

On Schrödingerization based quantum algorithms for linear dynamical systems with inhomogeneous terms

Abstract:We analyze the Schr\"odingerisation method for quantum simulation of a general class of non-unitary dynamics with inhomogeneous source terms. The Schr\"odingerisation technique, introduced in \cite{JLY22a,JLY23}, transforms any linear ordinary and partial differential equations with non-unitary dynamics into a system under unitary dynamics via a warped phase transition that maps the equations into a higher dimension, making them suitable for quantum simulation. This technique can also be applied to these equations with inhomogeneous terms modeling source or forcing terms or boundary and interface conditions, and discrete dynamical systems such as iterative methods in numerical linear algebra, through extra equations in the system. Difficulty airses with the presense of inhomogeneous terms since it can change the stability of the original system. In this paper, we systematically study--both theoretically and numerically--the important issue of recovering the original variables from the Schr\"odingerized equations, even when the evolution operator contains unstable modes. We show that even with unstable modes, one can still construct a stable scheme, yet to recover the original variable one needs to use suitable data in the extended space. We analyze and compare both the discrete and continuous Fourier transforms used in the extended dimension, and derive corresponding error estimates, which allows one to use the more appropriate transform for specific equations. We also provide a smoother initialization for the Schrod\"odingerized system to gain higher order accuracy in the extended space. We homogenize the inhomogeneous terms with a stretch transformation, making it easier to recover the original variable. Our recovering technique also provides a simple and generic framework to solve general ill-posed problems in a computationally stable way.

Abstract:Without wasting time and effort on philosophical justifications and implications, we write down the conditions for the Hamiltonian of a quantum system for rendering it mathematically equivalent to a deterministic system. These are the equations to be considered. Special attention is given to the notion of 'locality'. Various examples are worked out, followed by a systematic procedure to generate classical evolution laws and quantum Hamiltonians that are exactly equivalent. What is new here is that we consider interactions, keeping them as general as we can. The quantum systems found, form a dense set if we limit ourselves to sufficiently low energy states. The class is discrete, just because the set of deterministic models containing a finite number of classical states, is discrete. In contrast with earlier suspicions, the gravitational force turns out not to be needed for this; it suffices that the classical system act at a time scale much smaller than the inverse of the maximum scattering energies considered.

Higher conservation laws for the quantum non-linear Schrödinger equation

Abstract:We construct explicit forms for two non-trivial conservation laws of the quantum non-linear Schrödinger equation and show that they have the correct quasi-classical limit. For H4 the second quantised form cannot be obtained by normal ordering of the classical conserved quantity H4cl. We show the quantum inverse scattering method also gives the correct higher Hamiltonians H3 and H4. The surprising result is that the expansion of fundamental integrals of motion such as A(λ), in inverse powers of λ, cannot be recovered by normal ordering of the classical expansion.
