Abstract:High electrical conductivity in the shallow mantle has long been recognized by electromagnetic depth soundings, but the origin remains debated. Various candidates, of which the two most popular are water enrichment in olivine (the dominant mineral in the upper mantle) and partial melt, have been proposed to explain the electrical anomalies. These models nearly exclusively assume a very low conductivity for dry or water-poor olivine. Here, we show by experimental work that, under well-controlled conditions of pressure, temperature, oxygen fugacity (fO(2)), and water inventory, the conductivity of olivine is in fact insensitive to water content at mantle temperature (e.g., >1,000 degrees C), although the enhancement is substantial at relatively low temperature. In particular, the conductivity of olivine at temperature beyond similar to 1,000 degrees C is strikingly high, about 0.01-0.1 S/m, at the oxidizing conditions of the shallow mantle. The high conductivity is comparable to the geophysically measured high conductivity in many conductive regions of the shallow mantle. The results provide a new framework for understanding the electrical anomalies and electrical structure of the shallow mantle. Plain Language Summary Highly conductive zones at similar to 50-150-km depths in the shallow mantle have long been geophysically resolved, but the origin remains debated. It is commonly assumed that the electrical conductivity of dry and water-poor olivine is very low, so that the imaged electrical anomalies are caused by other conductive candidates. By carefully controlling the various factors that may affect the electrical conductivity of olivine, the dominant mineral in the upper mantle that determines largely the electrical structure, we provide experimental evidence that the conductivity of olivine is actually much higher at the oxidizing conditions of the shallow mantle than what has been assumed previously. This offers new insights into the electrical structure and dynamics of the shallow mantle.

Abstract:The interior of the Earth remains our last terra incognita, inaccessible to direct observations. Our understanding of the deformation of the mantle, which shapes our planet through convection and plate tectonics, is based on analysis of: (1) rare mantle rocks carried to the Earth's surface by volcanic or tectonic processes, (2) the consequences of this deformation on the planet's surface, and (3) geophysical data. These observables combined with laboratory experiments and numerical modeling imply that olivine deforms via the motion of defects within its crystalline structure and along grain boundaries. Ductile deformation by these crystal-scale processes results in anisotropic propagation of seismic waves, which allows us to probe upper- mantle deformation at scales of tens to hundreds of kilometers.
New Constraints on Upper Mantle Creep Mechanism Inferred from Silicon Grain-Boundary Diffusion Rates

Abstract:The creep in the Earth's interior is dominated either by diffusion creep which causes Newtonian mantle flow, or by dislocation creep which results in non-Newtonian mantle flow. Although previous deformation studies on olivine claimed a transition from dislocation creep to diffusion creep with depth in the upper mantle, they might misunderstand the creep rates due to experimental difficulties. Since creep in olivine is controlled by silicon diffusion, we measured the silicon grain-boundary diffusion coefficient in well-sintered iron-free olivine aggregates as a function of temperature, pressure, and water content, showing activation energy, activation volume, and water content exponent of 220 +/- 30 kJ/mol, 4.0 +/- 0.7 cm(3)/mol, and 0.26 +/- 0.07, respectively. Our results based on Si diffusion in forsterite predict that diffusion creep dominates at low pressures and low temperatures, whereas dislocation creep dominates under high pressure and high temperature conditions. Water has negligible effects on both diffusion and dislocation creep. There is a transition from diffusion creep in the shallow upper mantle to dislocation creep in deeper regions. This explains the seismic anisotropy increases at the Gutenberg discontinuity beneath oceans and at the mid-lithosphere discontinuity beneath continents. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Real Time Observation Experiment on Olivine Phase Transformation

Abstract:Olivine is the dominant mineral in the earth mantle. The olivine to its high pressure polymorphs phase transformation has wide implications for many mantle dynamic processes. The 410km discontinuity is usually considered to be caused by the olivine-wadsleyite transformation. And olivine's preferred orientation is important for understanding the rheology and seismic anisotropy in the upper mantle. The alpha-beta transformation of olivine possibly influences the dynamics of the subducting slab, and it may also lead to rheological weakening which strongly affects the mechanical properties of subducting slabs. The recent developments of phase transformation are reviewed in this paper including the following area: the in-situ X-ray diffraction and the quench methods; the apparatus used; the influence of press-scale to the precision of the test results; the nucleation and growth mechanism and the shear-induced mechanism. Then the experiment results of (Mg0.9Fe0.1)(2)SiO4 olivine-wadsleyite phase transformation were reported. Ten runs with different P-T conditions were performed. beta phase was obtained in some runs and a coexistence of alpha and beta phases were observed in other runs. Therefore, the first-hand in-situ X ray diffraction transformation experimental results of (Mg, Fe)(2)SiO4 olivine were obtained. And the transformation mechanisms were discussed based on FTIR, optical and electrical microscopy observations.
The Effect of Oxygen Fugacity on Ionic Conductivity in Olivine

Abstract:The oxygen fugacity (fO2) may affect the ionic conductivity of olivine under upper mantle conditions because Mg vacancies can be produced in the crystal structure by the oxidization of iron from Fe2+ to Fe3+.Here we investigated olivine ionic conductivity at 4 GPa,as a function of temperature,crystallo-graphic orientation,and oxygen fugacity,corresponding to the topmost asthenospheric conditions.The results demonstrate that the ionic conductivity is insensitive to fO2 under relatively reduced conditions(fO2 below Re-ReO2 buffer),whereas it has a clear fO2-dependence under relatively oxidized conditions(fO2 around the magnetite-hematite buffer).The ionic conduction in olivine may contribute significantly to the conductivity anomaly in the topmost asthenosphere especially at relatively oxidized conditions.
A First-Principles Molecular Dynamics Study of Molecular Hydrogen Diffusion in Fe-free Olivine

Abstract:Molecular hydrogen (H2) may be an important form of water in nominally anhydrous minerals in the Earth’s mantle and plays a critical role in mantle water cycle, but the transport properties of H2 remain unclear. Here, the diffusion of H2 in Fe-free olivine lattice is investigated at pressures of 1–13 GPa and temperatures of 1300–1900 K by first-principles molecular dynamics. The activation energy and activation volume for H2 diffusion in Fe-free olivine are determined to be 55 ± 8 kJ/mol and 3.6 ± 0.2 cm3/mol, respectively. H2 diffusion in Fe-free olivine is faster than H+ by 1–4 orders of magnitude and therefore it is more favorable for hydrogen transportation under upper mantle conditions. H2 can be carried to the mantle transition zone by subducting slabs without releasing to the surrounding mantle. The upper mantle may act as a lid, preventing the releasing of H2 produced in the deep mantle to the surface.
Mild-to-wild plasticity of Earth's upper mantle

Abstract:The flow of Earth's upper mantle has long been considered to occur by slow and near-continuous creep. Such behaviour is observed in classical high-temperature deformation experiments and is a fundamental component of geodynamic models. However, the latest generation of high-resolution experiments, capable of sensing temporal heterogeneities in rates of dislocation motion, have revealed that materials ranging from metals to ice exhibit a spectrum of behaviours termed mild-to-wild plasticity. It remains unknown whether olivine, the most abundant mineral in Earth's upper mantle, always exhibits mild continuous flow or can exhibit intermittent wild fluctuations in plastic strain rate. Here, we demonstrate that olivine exhibits measurable wildness, even under conditions at which its behaviour is predicted to be relatively mild. During nanoindentation experiments conducted at room temperature, continuous plastic flow is punctuated by intermittent bursts of displacement with log-normally distrubuted magnitudes, indicating avalanches of correlated dislocation motion that account for approximately 8 +/- 6% of the plastic strain. Remarkably, the framework of mild-to-wild plasticity predicts that wildness should increase with depth in the Earth, with flow of the asthenospheric upper mantle occurring almost entirely by wild fluctuations of deformation at the grain scale. The recognition of intermittent plasticity in geological materials provides new constraints for microphysical models of dislocation-mediated flow and raises questions about the mehcanisms of transient instabilities in otherwise ductile regimes, such as deep earthquakes and slow-slip events.

Behavior of hydrogen defects in olivine at high temperature and high pressure: disordering, re-configuration and interation

Abstract:<p>Water in the form of hydrogen defects in olivine strongly influences the physical properties of olivine, thereby being responsible for physical/chemical processes in the deep Earth. Knowledge of hydrogen defects in olivine is fundamental to understand water distribution and its impact on the upper mantle. However, the current explanations of water effects on processes in the deep Earth are mainly based on hydrogen defects observed at ambient conditions. Since hydrogen is highly mobile, the migration of hydrogen between lattice sites at high temperature and high pressure may not be quenchable. Therefore, there arises a question: whether the hydrogen defects in olivine obtained from infrared spectra at ambient conditions are the same as those at the temperature and pressure conditions of the upper mantle? Here, we carry out <em>in situ</em> high-temperature and high-pressure infrared spectroscopic investigations on hydrogen defects in the natural olivine and synthetic Fe-free forsterite. We find that hydrogen defects exhibit disordering at temperature-pressure conditions of the upper mantle, and hydrogen defects corresponding to pure Si vacancies display re-configuration under compression. Interestingly, dehydrogenation experiments of the natural olivine indicate interactions of hydrogen defects. The lost hydrogen of the titanium-clinohumite defects does not completely release out of the crystal. It can migrate to pure Si vacancies and, also, can move to Mg vacancies coupling with trivalent cations. Thus, dehydrogenation and interactions of hydrogen storage sites may be very complex. There may be other reactions among storage sites during dehydrogenation, depending on the chemical compositions, hydrogen storage sites, and the annealing conditions. In conclusion, we report disordering and reconfiguration of hydrogen storage sites at high temperature and high pressure, and also interactions of hydrogen storage sites during dehydrogenation. These are vital for understanding water distribution and processes in the deep Earth.</p>
Co2-Induced Small Water Solubility in Olivine and Implications for Properties of the Shallow Mantle

Abstract:H2O and CO2 are important components of fluids in the mantle at similar to 30-150 km depth, and may affect strongly water dissolution in nominally anhydrous olivine; however, available experimental hydrogenation of olivine has been nearly exclusively carried out in coexistence with H2O (CO2-free). In this study, the effect of CO2 on water solubility in olivine has been investigated by H-annealing natural olivine under peridotite- and fluid-saturated conditions. Experiments were conducted at 1.5-5 GPa and 1100-1300 degrees C, with oxygen fugacity controlled by Ni-NiO and with either H2O or H2O-CO2 as buffering fluid. The olivine shows no change in composition during the experiments. The infrared spectra of the hydrated olivine are characterized by prominent OH bands from similar to 3650 to 3000 cm(-1) in all the runs, at both high frequency (>3450 cm(-1)) and low frequency (<3450 cm(-1)), and the H2O solubility is similar to 120-370 ppm for the olivine in coexisting with H2O, and similar to 65-180 ppm for the olivine in coexisting with H2O-CO2. When CO2 is present in the buffering fluid, the H2O solubility of olivine is reduced by a factor of similar to 2, due to effect on the partitioning of water between minerals and coexisting fluid, and the measured H2O solubility shows independence on fluid composition (the molar ratio of CO2 to CO2 + H2O at similar to 0.2-0.5) given pressure, temperature and oxygen fugacity. Olivine equilibrated in the shallow mantle is probably dominated by OH groups in the wavenumber similar to 3650-3000 cm(-1), and the intensity of OH bands at low frequency may be higher than or comparable to those at higher frequencies. The storage capacity of water in the shallow mantle in previous estimates may have been overestimated by a factor of at least similar to 4 if the observed effect of CO2 on water solubility is correct. Our results have profound influence on understanding partial melting, electrical conductivity anomalies and metasomatism in the shallow mantle. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Olivine is not only the dominant mineral in the upper mantle of the Earth, but also the major mineral in the subducted slab. It is generally accepted that the atom groups in olivine vibrate in an anharmonic manner at normal mantle temperatures. How they behave at the low temperatures typical in a subduction zone, however, is unclear. In this study, we systematically investigated the IR features of some doubly polished olivine thin sections with different thicknesses using infrared transmission spectroscopy, especially focusing on the overtone/combination bands in the 2100 similar to 1500cm(-1) region. With the IR data collected from room temperature to about 450 degrees C, we obtained the relationships between the anharmonicity coefficient (chi) and temperature for two characteristic IR bands of the SiO4 tetrahedra: the equations are chi(838) =6.37(2) x 10(-7) x T + 0. 0014(1) and chi(993) =7.86(3) x 10(-7) x T + 0. 0015(1), with T in degrees C. When extrapolated to 600 degrees C, these equations produce chi(838) = 0. 0018 (1) and chi(993) = 0. 0020 (2), which presumably indicate a negligible role of the anharmonic behavior for the SiO4 tetrahedra in olivine at the low temperatures in the subduction zone.
Effects of Metastable Olivine on Negative Buoyance in Subduction Zones and Their Dynamic Siganificance

Abstract:We calculated the negative buoyancy of subducting lithospheres based on numerical simulations of the temperature fields by means of 2‐D FEM. The values of the negative buoyancy increase with depth in depths of h < 400 km and h > 740 km. On the other hand, there is a decrease of negative buoyancy in depths of 660 to 740 km, because there is phase transformation from ringwoodite to perovskite, which prevents slab penetrating into the lower mantle. Metastable olivine changes the distribution of negative buoyancy between depths of 400 to 660 km. Especially, it drastically altered the increasing trend of negative buoyancy with depth, leading to a net decrease of negative buoyancy below the 400 km depth. The existence of metastable olivine reduces the increased value of negative buoyancy with depth, which would make the penetration through 660 km discontinuity more difficult. Moreover, it would greatly change the pattern of stress distribution in and around the area of metastable olivine.
The Microdeformation Fabric of Amphibole-Rich Peridotite in the Southern Mariana Trench and Its Influence on Seismic Anisotropy

Abstract:Olivine, the most abundant mineral in the upper mantle, exhibits elastic anisotropy. Understanding the seismic anisotropy and flow patterns in the upper mantle hinges on the crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) of olivine. Similarly, hydrous minerals, which also display elastic anisotropy, play a crucial role in explaining seismic anisotropy in numerous subduction zones. High-temperature and -pressure simple shear experiments reveal that the CPO of amphibole can lead to significant seismic anisotropy. In this study, peridotite samples originating from the southern end of the Mariana Trench, commonly containing amphibole, were analyzed. The microdeformation fabric and seismic anisotropy were examined. The results indicate a weak fabric strength in olivine, yet identifiable deformation fabrics of A/D, D, and AG were observed. Various dislocation structures suggest that olivine experiences complex deformation across various temperatures. Not only can the original slip system transform, but the melt/fluid resulting from melting also has a substantial impact on the peridotite. Deformation precedes the melt/rock interaction, resulting in a strong melt/rock reaction under near-static conditions. Furthermore, the modal content of amphibole significantly alters the seismic anisotropy of peridotite. An increase in amphibole content (types I, III, and IV) enhances seismic anisotropy, particularly for type I amphibole. Notably, the presence of type I fabric amphibole promotes the Vs1 polarization direction parallel to the trench in subduction zones, a phenomenon observed in other subduction zones. Therefore, when considering mantle peridotite regions rich in amphibole, the impact of amphibole on seismic anisotropy must be accounted for.

Abstract:Significance Thermal conductivity of mantle minerals is critical for controlling the temperature profile and dynamics of the mantle and subducting slabs. However, the effect of hydration on lattice thermal conductivity remains poorly understood. We studied lattice thermal conductivity of olivine (Mg 0.9 Fe 0.1 ) 2 SiO 4 (Fo90) to 15 GPa using ultrafast optics. The thermal conductivity of hydrous Fo90 with ∼7,000 wt ppm water is 2 times smaller than its anhydrous counterpart at transition zone pressures. Modeling thermal structure of a subducting slab shows that the hydration-reduced thermal conductivity in the oceanic crust further decreases the temperature within the subducting slab, which substantially lowers the olivine−wadsleyite transformation rate and extends the metastable olivine to greater depths. Such an effect could enhance water transportation to the transition zone.
Deformation of Olivine-Spinel Aggregates in the System (mg,ni)(2)geo4 Deformed to High Strain in Torsion: Implications for Upper Mantle Anisotropy

Abstract:Deformation of mantle phases to high strain is fundamental for understanding mantle dynamics. However, it is technically challenging to perform deformation experiments yielding accurate mechanical results at the high pressures required for certain mantle phases, such as wadsleyite and ringwoodite. Deformation experiments on analog materials of such high‐pressure phases can provide insight into the deformation properties of the mantle. The (Mg,Ni)2GeO4 system undergoes the olivine‐spinel transformation at much lower pressures than the silicate counterpart. Hence the high strain deformation properties of an olivine‐spinel rock can be studied at experimentally tractable pressures and temperatures. Experiments were conducted in a gas medium deformation apparatus at constant angular velocity, a temperature of 1473 K, and 300 MPa confining pressure. At these conditions with a Mg/(Mg + Ni) ratio of 0.9, the resulting aggregate comprised 70% olivine, 30% spinel, and <1% orthopyroxene. The applied strain rate ranged from 10−4 to 10−5 s−1, yielding shear stresses supported by the samples of between 100 and 250 MPa. Samples were deformed to a range of shear strains between γ = 1 and γ = 7 in order to study the microstructural development during high strain deformation. In these experiments, the spinel phase did not deform to produce a crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO). The olivine phase produced a CPO which is consistent with slip on the [001](hk0) slip system. If this slip system is dominant in olivine below 250–300 km in the upper mantle, the observed seismic anisotropy can be explained without resorting to changes in flow regime or deformation mechanism at this depth.
Evolution of Microstructural Properties in Sheared Iron‐Rich Olivine

Abstract:Iron‐rich olivine is mechanically weaker than olivine of mantle composition, ca. Fo90, and thus is more amenable to study under a wide range of laboratory conditions. To investigate the effects of iron content on deformation‐produced crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) and grain size, we analyzed the microstructures of olivine samples with compositions of Fo70, Fo50, and Fo0 that were deformed in torsion under either anhydrous or hydrous conditions at 300 MPa. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) observations reveal a transition in CPO from D‐type fabric, induced by dislocation glide on both the (010)[100] and the (001)[100] slip systems, at low strains, to A‐type fabric, caused by dislocation glide on the (010)[100] slip system, at high strains for all of our samples, independent of iron content and hydrous/anhydrous conditions. A similar evolution of fabric with increasing strain is also reported to occur for Fo90. Radial seismic anisotropy increases with increasing strain, reaching a maximum value of ∼1.15 at a shear strain of ∼3.5 for each sample, demonstrating that the seismic anisotropy of naturally deformed olivine‐rich rocks can be well approximated by that of iron‐rich olivine. Based on EBSD observations, we derived a piezometer for which recrystallized grain size decreases inversely with stress to the ∼1.2 power. Also, recrystallized grain size increases with increasing iron content. Our experimental results contribute to understanding the microstructural evolution in the mantle of not only Earth but also Mars, where the iron content in olivine is higher.
Resolving puzzles of the phase-transformation-based mechanism of the strong deep-focus earthquake

Abstract:Deep-focus earthquakes that occur at 350-660 km are assumed to be caused by olivine → spinel phase transformation (PT). However, there are many existing puzzles: (a) What are the mechanisms for jump from geological 10-17 - 10-15 s-1 to seismic 10 - 103 s-1 strain rates? Is it possible without PT? (b) How does metastable olivine, which does not completely transform to spinel for over a million years, suddenly transform during seconds? (c) How to connect shear-dominated seismic signals with volume-change-dominated PT strain? Here, we introduce a combination of several novel concepts that resolve the above puzzles quantitatively. We treat the transformation in olivine like plastic strain-induced (instead of pressure/stress-induced) and find an analytical 3D solution for coupled deformation-transformation-heating in a shear band. This solution predicts conditions for severe (singular) transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) and self-blown-up deformation-transformation-heating process due to positive thermomechanochemical feedback between TRIP and strain-induced transformation. This process leads to temperature in a band, above which the self-blown-up shear-heating process in the shear band occurs after finishing the PT. Our findings change the main concepts in studying the initiation of the deep-focus earthquakes and PTs during plastic flow in geophysics in general.

Abstract:Phase transformation of ( Mg0.89Fe0.11)(2)SiO4 olivine, the proposed major composition of upper mantle, is related to the mechanism of deep focus earthquakes and the interaction between subduction zones and their ambient mantle. Nucleation rate and growth rate are two important parameters in the computation of phase transformation. However, the nucleation rate has not been derived from the experimental data partly for technical difficulties. We modify the dimensionless parameter describing the impingement under grain boundary nucleation through physical analysis on the image of the impingement. Based on this modification and the experimental data, we first evaluate the nucleation of olivine. By fitting the new nucleation rates, we get the parameters K-0 and gamma phi(1/3). The best fitting results are K-0 = 6.9 x 10(24) s(-1) . m(-2) . K-1, gamma phi(1/3) = 0.16 j . m(-2).
Fluid‐Driven Shear Instabilities in the Subducted Oceanic Mantle at Intermediate Depths: Insights From Western Alps Meta‐Ophiolites

Abstract:Serpentinites are major carriers of volatiles in deep subduction zones, releasing most fluids in the 500–650°C range. Despite fundamental implications for mass transfer and intermediate‐depth seismicity, the mechanical role of these fluids is unclear. To characterize the mechanical role of fluids at (ultra)high‐pressure conditions, we perform a petro‐structural analysis on olivine‐rich veins from the Western Alps meta‐ophiolite. Some veins formed through dilational and mixed dilational‐shear fracturing without significant shear‐related deformation. However, field and microstructural observations indicate transient shearing and dilational fracturing at high pore fluid pressures. These include: (a) foliated sheared veins; (b) newly formed olivine and Ti‐clinohumite within mineral lineations coating sheared veins and shear bands; (c) Olivine and Ti‐clinohumite mineral fibers sealing porphyroclasts; (d) mutual crosscutting relationships among dilational and shear features. Dilational veins prevail in low‐strain areas, while sheared veins and shear bands dominate within high‐strain zones toward the ultramafic sliver boundaries. These strain variations underscore the role of local stress regimes during serpentinite dehydration. Consequently, areas experiencing stronger shear stresses around large‐scale blocks or mechanical weakening during fluid circulation are prone to draining overpressurized fluids. These interface‐parallel and fracture‐controlled pathways thus facilitate fluid escape from the dehydrating downgoing slab. Transient events of dilational fracturing and brittle‐ductile shearing, along with strain localization in highly comminuted olivine‐bearing sheared veins, may have resulted from strain rate bursts potentially related to (sub)seismic deformation. These observations are in line with geophysical data indicating high pore fluid pressures within the intermediate‐depth seismicity region.

Abstract:Abstract The intrinsic anharmonicity plays an important role in the thermodynamic properties of minerals at the high-temperature conditions of the mantle. To investigate the effect of iron on the thermodynamic properties of olivine, the most abundant mineral in the upper mantle, we collected in situ high-temperature and high-pressure Raman spectra of natural Fo89Fa11 and synthetic Fo58Fa42 samples. Fo58Fa42 dissociates to enstatite + quartz + Fe2O3(+Fe) at 893 K. All the Raman-active modes systematically shift to lower frequencies at elevated temperatures, whereas to higher frequencies with increasing pressure. The Ag mode at ~960 cm–1 is more sensitive to the variations of temperature and pressure than other internal modes. The crystal-field splitting of the vibrational energy states becomes slightly weakened at high temperatures but strengthened at elevated pressures. We calculated the isobaric (γiP) and isothermal (γiT) mode Grüneisen parameters for these olivine samples. The intrinsic anharmonic parameters (ai) are negative for both the lattice and internal vibrations, and our calculations indicate that the intrinsic anharmonicity makes positive contributions to the thermodynamic properties of olivine at high temperatures, such as the internal energy (U), heat capacities (CV and CP), and entropy (S). Iron incorporation further increases the magnitudes of these anharmonic contributions. In addition, the Fe effect on the intrinsic anharmonicity may also apply to other thermodynamic properties in olivine, such as equations of state and equilibrium isotopic fractionations, which are important in constraining physical and chemical properties of the upper mantle.
