Abstract:Model validation has become a primary means to evaluate accuracy and reliability of computational simulations in engineering design. Because of uncertainties involved in modeling, manufacturing processes, and measurement systems, the assessment of the validity of a modeling approach must be conducted based on stochastic measurements to provide designers with confidence in using a model. A generic model validation methodology via uncertainty propagation and data transformations is presented. The approach reduces the number of physical tests at each design setting to one by shifting the evaluation effort to uncertainty propagation of the computational model. Response surface methodology is used to create metamodels as less costly approximations of simulation models for the uncertainty propagation. Methods for validating models with both normal and nonnormal response distributions are proposed. The methodology is illustrated with the examination of the validity of two finite element analysis models for predicting springback angles in a sample flanging process.

Abstract:Verification and Validation (V&V) is the foremost analysis which is carried out for evaluation of the accuracy level and dependability of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations. The present study investigates the V&V of CFD models in predicting the dynamic trim and hull resistance of high-speed planing hulls with an aim to provide a deeper understanding of V&V analysis in this specific field of application. Two different planing hulls, namely the C05 stepped hull and the C1 interceptor hull, are analyzed with four different grids and time-steps using two mesh motion techniques, namely overset and morphing approach. The discretization (grid) and time-step uncertainties for each CFD simulation are estimated using the least squares method. The results indicate that the overset mesh approach performs better than the morphing grid method in terms of numerical uncertainty and validation achieved for both hulls. The error of both techniques in the prediction of resistance and trim angle of the boat shows an acceptable range of accuracy. The findings provide valuable insights for simulation-based designing and optimizing high-speed planing hulls, specifically by identifying the optimal mesh technique, cell number, and time-step for accurate prediction of wetted surface shape, ventilation formation, running attitude, and resistance.

Abstract:Ship resistance and flow field of KVLCC2 (KRISO Very Large Crude Carrier 2) are studied experimentally and numerically. A systematic analysis of both experimental and numerical uncertainty is performed. The experiment focuses on resistance distribution along the hull, which is divided into three segments. A detailed experimental uncertainty analysis with bias and precision limits is investigated. The validation of numerical calculation is performed for four grid densities and two turbulence models: ‘Shear-Stress Transport k-ω’ (SST) and ‘Explicit Algebraic Stress k-ω’ model (EASM). The validation and verification show that the numerical results are reasonable and reliable. The numerical study shows that both turbulence models can give good prediction of resistance, ship's sinkage and trim, as well as flow field around the hull. Comparatively, the ‘EASM’ model has higher accuracy. The prediction of resistance on the aft segment confirms the superiority of anisotropic ‘EASM’ model, and shows that the present measurement data are a valuable test case for both numerical verification and turbulence model validation.

Abstract:Given the necessity for numerical validation, precisely determining the ship's center of gravity and moment of inertia is crucial for validating simulations with motions. This paper performs three sections to illustrate the accuracy of the measurement method based on SolidWorks. Firstly, an analytical formulation on a shelled box is used to do the verification analysis. Secondly, the inclining test is used to validate the reliability of the measurement method in determining the ship's vertical center of gravity. By comparing the vertical center of gravity value in the test, SolidWorks yields only a 4.06% error. Thirdly, the flooding test of the damaged ship in still water is used to validate the reliability of the measurement method in determining the ship's moment of inertia. By comparing the test roll curve and its amplitude of 5.5 degrees, the tendency consistency and 3.6% amplitude error validate the moment of inertia input into CFD software.

Abstract:Modelling and simulating the traffic of heavily used but secure environments such as seaports and airports is of increasing importance. Errors made when simulating these environments can have long standing economic, social and environmental implications. This paper discusses issues and problems that may arise when designing a simulation strategy. Data for the Port is presented, methods for lightweight vehicle assessment that can be used to calibrate and validate simulations are also discussed along with a diagnosis of overcalibration issues. We show that decisions about where the intelligence lies in a system has important repercussions for the reliability of system statistics. Finally, conclusions are drawn about how microsimulations can be moved forward as a robust planning tool for the 21st century.

Abstract:The modelling, simulation and analysis methods in automotive development are in the process of transformation. Increasing system complexity, variant diversity and efforts to improve efficiency lead to more complex simulations and depend on virtual vehicle development, testing and approval across a large application area. Consequently, the new key requirements of modern validation involve more precise reliability quantification of large application areas, achieved with reasonable effort of cost and time. This paper identifies that the neglection of uncertainties, low information in validation results, low extrapolation capability and the resulting small application area are preventing the state-of-the-art validation meeting those new requirements. In an extensive analysis examining more than twenty frameworks in detail, this paper shows that statistical methods exhibit a high potential to remedy these four key insufficiencies. The paper justifies comprehensively that consistent statistical validation is necessary, important and crucial for precise reliability quantification, which enables accurate model selection, knowledge building and decision making in modern automotive vehicle-dynamics simulations. An example is given explaining the basic principle and benefit of consistent statistical validation. Since automotive statistical methods are still at the beginning, the aim is to enable further investigation by showing their potential and providing deeper knowledge about this topic.

Abstract:Clean energy systems have been investigated recently by the researchers of the University of New Mexico to increase the efficiency specifically in the solar tower technology. Similar to solar energy, wave power harnesses energy that comes from the sun. Solar irradiation causes wind by changing the pressure, and wind gives its momentum to the ocean surface which produces waves. Modeling and simulation (M&S) of free surface flow can be a very useful tool for the wave energy industry. However, if these tools are to be relied upon, their accuracy must be tested and shown to be sound. In this investigation, we focus on verification and validation (V&V) of wave tank flow M&S. The Volume of Fluid (VOF) model was applied to perform transient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis using the numerical simulation software OpenFOAM. To assess V&V, the height of the free surface flow was considered as the system response quantity (SRQ). Stokes theory (fifth order) was utilized as the most accurate available approximation of the exact solution to measure the order of accuracy of the discretized mathematical model which is known as code verification. Data collected during model-scale testing at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD) Maneuvering and Seakeeping (MASK) basin were utilized to validate the computational results. The CFD domain consists of a two-dimensional plane representing the region of interest of the wave basin which has several wave height measurement probes. Our simulation results were compared to the data from one of these probes in order to conduct the V&V analysis. Code verification and comparison with experimental values demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of our model.

Abstract:Agent Based Models are very popular in a number of different areas. For example, they have been used in a range of domains ranging from modeling of tumor growth, immune systems, molecules to models of social networks, crowds and computer and mobile self-organizing networks. One reason for their success is their intuitiveness and similarity to human cognition. However, with this power of abstraction, in spite of being easily applicable to such a wide number of domains, it is hard to validate agent-based models. In addition, building valid and credible simulations is not just a challenging task but also a crucial exercise to ensure that what we are modeling is, at some level of abstraction, a model of our conceptual system; the system that we have in mind. In this paper, we address this important area of validation of agent based models by presenting a novel technique which has broad applicability and can be applied to all kinds of agent-based models. We present a framework, where a virtual overlay multi-agent system can be used to validate simulation models. In addition, since agent-based models have been typically growing, in parallel, in multiple domains, to cater for all of these, we present a new single validation technique applicable to all agent based models. Our technique, which allows for the validation of agent based simulations uses VOMAS: a Virtual Overlay Multi-agent System. This overlay multi-agent system can comprise various types of agents, which form an overlay on top of the agent based simulation model that needs to be validated. Other than being able to watch and log, each of these agents contains clearly defined constraints, which, if violated, can be logged in real time. To demonstrate its effectiveness, we show its broad applicability in a wide variety of simulation models ranging from social sciences to computer networks in spatial and non-spatial conceptual models.

Towards Deductive Verification of Control Algorithms for Autonomous Marine Vehicles

Abstract:The use of autonomous vehicles in real-world applications is often precluded by the difficulty of providing safety guarantees for their complex controllers. The simulation-based testing of these controllers cannot deliver sufficient safety guarantees, and the use of formal verification is very challenging due to the hybrid nature of the autonomous vehicles. Our work-in-progress paper introduces a formal verification approach that addresses this challenge by integrating the numerical computation of such a system (in GNU/Octave) with its hybrid system verification by means of a proof assistant (Isabelle). To show the effectiveness of our approach, we use it to verify differential invariants of an Autonomous Marine Vehicle with a controller switching between multiple modes.

Abstract:Reliable simulations are critical for analyzing and understanding complex systems, but their accuracy depends on correct input data. Incorrect inputs such as invalid or out-of-range values, missing data, and format inconsistencies can cause simulation crashes or unnoticed result distortions, ultimately undermining the validity of the conclusions. This paper presents a methodology for verifying the validity of input data in simulations, a process we term model input verification (MIV). We implement this approach in FabGuard, a toolset that uses established data schema and validation tools for the specific needs of simulation modeling. We introduce a formalism for categorizing MIV patterns and offer a streamlined verification pipeline that integrates into existing simulation workflows. FabGuard's applicability is demonstrated across three diverse domains: conflict-driven migration, disaster evacuation, and disease spread models. We also explore the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) for automating constraint generation and inference. In a case study with a migration simulation, LLMs not only correctly inferred 22 out of 23 developer-defined constraints, but also identified errors in existing constraints and proposed new, valid constraints. Our evaluation demonstrates that MIV is feasible on large datasets, with FabGuard efficiently processing 12,000 input files in 140 seconds and maintaining consistent performance across varying file sizes.

Abstract:If autonomous vehicles are to be widely accepted, we need to ensure their safe operation. For this reason, verification and validation (V&V) approaches must be developed that are suitable for this domain. Model checking is a formal technique which allows us to exhaustively explore the paths of an abstract model of a system. Using a probabilistic model checker such as PRISM, we may determine properties such as the expected time for a mission, or the probability that a specific mission failure occurs. However, model checking of complex systems is difficult due to the loss of information during abstraction. This is especially so when considering systems such as autonomous vehicles which are subject to external influences. An alternative solution is the use of Monte Carlo simulation to explore the results of a continuous-time model of the system. The main disadvantage of this approach is that the approach is not exhaustive as not all executions of the system are analysed. We are therefore interested in developing a framework for formal verification of autonomous vehicles, using Monte Carlo simulation to inform and validate our symbolic models during the initial stages of development. In this paper, we present a continuous-time model of a quadrotor unmanned aircraft undertaking an autonomous mission. We employ this model in Monte Carlo simulation to obtain specific mission properties which will inform the symbolic models employed in formal verification.

Validation of a Novel Floating Wind Turbine Simulation Tool via Benchmarking: Case Study of a Semi-Submersible Platform

Abstract:Abstract This paper describes the validation of a novel floating wind turbine simulation tool based on an existing finite element offshore structural analysis solver that recently has been extended to simulate offshore wind turbines. Given the growing importance of offshore wind in the decarbonization strategy of many countries, and particularly the predicted exponential future growth in floating offshore wind, the requirement for validated numerical modelling tools to support detailed engineering design is now greater than ever. The tool combines a unique structural analysis solver incorporating a 3D hybrid beam-column element featuring fully-coupled axial, torsional and bending deformation modes, with the open-source aerodynamic modelling software FAST, to enable it to perform fully coupled aero-hydro-structural simulation of offshore wind turbines. The validation process focuses on a floating semi-submersible platform hosting a 5MW turbine, which is the reference model used in the international research project Offshore Code Comparison Collaboration Continuation (OC4). This is a code-to-code verification project sponsored by the International Energy Agency (IEA) which benchmarks a range of simulation codes for offshore wind turbine modelling. Beginning with fundamental test cases, such as static equilibrium, eigen-analysis, and free-decay simulations, the scenarios advance in complexity to include current loading, regular and random wave excitation, in conjunction with both steady and turbulent wind inflow. The new tool generates results which exhibit a close correlation with the OC4 benchmark data, thereby validating the numerical modelling approach. Although primarily focused on the semi-submersible, the validation programme also considers the same 5MW turbine hosted by a jacket substructure in shallower water, illustrating the versatility of the modelling tool to simulate fixed support structures in addition to floating. Given the scope of the validation effort, this paper presents a representative sample of results only. A more comprehensive report covering the other load cases can be provided to interested readers by the authors. This paper complements the research work undertaken in OC4, further substantiating its insights into the dynamic responses of floating offshore wind turbines. The new tool offers advantages for non-linear structural simulation via its innovative finite element solution technique, and detailed hydrodynamic modelling via its established and proven numerical models. The combination underlines the benefits of exploiting synergies between offshore oil and gas and offshore wind.

Abstract:Model-based Software Engineering (MBSwE) and the use of automatic code generation has become popular for safety-critical aerospace applications. For these applications, verification and validation (V&V) is of utmost importance. With models as another layer of artifacts, however, V&V can become more complex in general, as V&V tasks can be carried out at the model level or at the code level. In this short paper, we present a V&V architecture specifically designed for MBSwE, which reflects the interrelationships between the different levels, tasks and tools, and which aims to provide a clear picture on the V&V approaches for MBSwE. We illustrate the architecture with a detailed analysis of two NASA missions and discuss their approaches to model use and understanding, automatic code generation, V&V, and model synchronization.

Abstract:The most common method to validate a DEVS model against the requirements is to simulate it several times under different conditions, with some simulation tool. The behavior of the model is compared with what the system is supposed to do. The number of different scenarios to simulate is usually infinite, therefore, selecting them becomes a crucial task. This selection, actually, is made following the experience or intuition of an engineer. Here we present a family of criteria to conduct DEVS model simulations in a disciplined way and covering the most significant simulations to increase the confidence on the model. This is achieved by analyzing the mathematical representation of the DEVS model and, thus, part of the validation process can be automatized.

Abstract:The design and development of crashworthy vehicles depend increasingly on credible crash simulation results. This credibility requires a careful process of verification and validation (V&V). The former relates to assessing the correctness of the calculation while the latter relates to the appropriateness of the physical and numerical test results. In this context, various sources of uncertainty exist in crash tests as well as in simulation models, which can influence the validation outcomes. Hence, it is essential to study statistical validation approaches for crash applications. In this paper, we elaborate on two important aspects of validation for crash simulation models: quantification of the credibility of simulation models, and consideration of uncertainties in the validation. Limited and noisy experimental data, typical in crash applications, impose a challenge on the investigation of validation approaches. To address these challenges, we use synthetic experimental results in our study. A crash-box model is validated using the V&V20-2009 validation standard. Two case studies are considered. The first case study aims to show the application of the V&V20 approach to a crash problem. The second case is a more complex scenario and aims to explore the impact of different experimental factors, such as experimental noise, hidden uncertainties, and the number of experiments on the validation results. In the end, we examine how underlying assumptions in the validation approach affect the conservativity of the validation results.

Abstract:There is a growing demand for simulators for the research and development of maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS) and the approval of autonomous navigation algorithms. Simulators are used for purposes such as evaluation and training and are taken on various configurations accordingly. The ship maneuvering mathematical model used in such a simulator is an important element that characterizes the simulator. In this paper, we discuss the dynamic model of the hull and its position in the simulator that will be required for MASSs in the future. It also discusses guidelines for selecting an appropriate model, which has not been discussed extensively in previous studies. Finally, we discuss the functional requirements that simulators should have.

Abstract:To mitigate the environmental impact of shipping on climate change, it is nowadays urgent to explore energy efficiency and cost-effective measures by means of reliable digital tools. These are becoming essential for assisting the design of new ships and the refurbishment of the existing ones, as well as for assessing and optimizing the energy performance of a ship during its entire life-cycle. This paper focuses on the verification of the reliability of a novel ship energy dynamic simulation tool, developed for the calculation of the energy, economic, and environmental performance of large ships, the design and optimization of energy system layouts and operational logics, as well as the definition of design and management guidelines for ships. The reliability of the developed model was verified through the use of data measured onboard an existing sample cruise ship. The verification procedure is conducted for assessing the reliability and for exploiting the potentiality of dynamic analysis for a more precise evaluation of ships energy loads, temperature levels, and necessary sizes of possible saving technologies. The validated tool will enable reaching two different goals: i) to evaluate different energy system layouts and to define the optimal one for achieving the present imposed targets and constraints, ii) to obtain a large amount of data for allowing the implementation of the digital twin approach in the maritime sector. The model validation was successfully achieved and very low or negligible deviations, lower than 4%, of numerical data vs. measurements were observed. Through the validated simulation tool approximately 23.4 GWh of primary energy from polluting fuels over two weeks is computed. In addition, the model provided insights into the flow rate, temperature levels, and energy flows of the ship energy system, necessary for identifying the amount of thermal energy to be recovered as well as potential solutions to enhance the energy efficiency of the entire system.

Abstract:The underwater environment is among Earth's most challenging domains, where failures incur elevated risks and costs for both technology and human endeavors. As a consequence, forecasting the behavior of mechatronic systems through simulation has become increasingly important. Underwater Robotic Simulators (URSs) allow researchers and engineers to safely develop and assess submarine systems. The selection of an appropriate URS from the list of available tools is not trivial. Moreover, the integration of this software with the Digital Twin (DT) concept presents numerous advantages, particularly the ability to link the simulated environment with actual underwater vehicles. This connection is facilitated by performing validation and simulation tests using Software In the Loop (SIL), Model In the Loop, and Hardware In the Loop (HIL) techniques. This paper extensively reviews URSs in the context of both robots and unmanned vehicles in light of the DT paradigm. The article critically examines distinctions among existing URSs, offering valuable insights to aid researchers in selecting the most fitting tool for their specific applications. Additionally, the review explores the practical applications of the identified simulators, categorizing their usage across different fields to illuminate the preferences within the scientific community and showcase prominent case studies.

A Multi-Level Corroborative Approach for Verification and Validation of Autonomous Robotic Swarms

Abstract:Modelling and characterizing emergent behaviour within a swarm can pose significant challenges in terms of 'assurance'. Assurance tasks encompass adherence to standards, certification processes, and the execution of verification and validation (V&V) methods, such as model checking. In this study, we propose a holistic, multi-level modelling approach for formally verifying and validating autonomous robotic swarms, which are defined at the macroscopic formal modelling, low-fidelity simulation, high-fidelity simulation, and real-robot levels. Our formal macroscopic models, used for verification, are characterized by data derived from actual simulations, ensuring both accuracy and traceability across different system models. Furthermore, our work combines formal verification with experimental validation involving real robots. In this way, our corroborative approach for V&V seeks to enhance confidence in the evidence, in contrast to employing these methods separately. We explore our approach through a case study focused on a swarm of robots operating within a public cloakroom.
