Abstract:Frequent marine oil spills pose a significant threat to the environment and marine's ecosystem. We have recently reported a highly tunable molecular gelling scaffold, which enables us to identify a few first examples of phase-selective organogelators (PSOGs) that can instantly gel the crude oil of various types with room-temperature operation. In this study, we demonstrate the high robustness and reliability of this modular gelling scaffold in consistently and combinatorially producing high capacity PSOGs. Such a unique feature has allowed us to carry out a systematic study of 48 gelators via a two-step screening process and to discover another powerful carboxybenzyl-based gelator with comparable gelling properties but with a cost lowered by more than 300%, pointing to a good commercial potential for rapid cleanup of oil spills while effectively eliminating environmental pollution caused by the spilled oil.
Aluminum soap nanoparticles-lignin powder form phase-selective gelator as an efficient sorbent for oils/water separation

Abstract:Rapid and efficient recovery of oil spill is the key link for oil spill remediation, and also a great challenge. Here, the organogelator-polymerized porous matrix composed of adsorbents and organogelators can provide a new strategy for solving this problem. The gelling mechanism of aluminum 12-hydroxystearate (Al HSA) to form spherical nano micelles in solvents was investigated via UV–vis, FT-IR, and XRD. A creative method for aluminum soap-lignin gelator (OTS-AL/Al HSA) syntheses was put forward through the saponification of 12-hydroxystearic acid (HSA) and lignin via epichlorohydrin (ECH) crosslinking. By adjusting the ECH content, the growth of Al HSA nanoparticles (15–40 nm) on lignin can be realized, and the accordingly increased roughness endowed gelator with better hydrophobicity (WCA of 134.6°) before octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) modification. Thanks to the porous structures, the gelator powder exhibited a high sorption capacity in the range of 3.5–5.2 g g −1 for oils and organic solvents. Rheological studies demonstrated high mechanical strength of gels (>1.6 × 10 5 pa) and the gelator still retained 70% sorption capacity after 6 gelation-distillation cycles. The gelation characteristics of OTS-AL/Al HSA were attributed to the rapid sorption of oils by lignin and the self-assembly of Al HSA nano micelles on lignin to form an aggregated network structure trapping oils, thus realizing the synergistic effect of oil sorption-gelation.

Abstract:Three-dimensional graphene aerogel materials used for treatment of oily wastewater with sophisticated composition remains a challenge due to volume shrinkage, resulting in single-function and low adsorption capacity. In this work, renewable Enteromorpha was introduced into the graphene aerogel via facile hydrothermal-freeze casting treatment, forming the compression, ultralight and amphiphilic adsorbent for oil spill cleanup and water pollution remediation. Meanwhile, further freeze casting avoids aerogel collapse for capillary tension during drying and produce more hierarchical pores. As for oil spill clean up, the Enteromorpha modified graphene aerogel (EGA) exhibits excellent adsorption capacity towards oil and organic solvents than pristine graphene aerogel (GA). Even after several cycles by compression and heat treatment, it still has a stable adsorption capacity for oil and organic solvents. The EGA also showed high ability to absorb water-soluble pollutants, such as dyes through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic reactions between dye molecules and aerogel. The facile strategy to fabricate the Enteromorpha-based amphiphilic EGA broadens the applications in water treatment through the high-value utilization of Enteromorpha.
Reusable Solid-form Phase-Selective Organogelators for Rapid and Efficient Remediation of Crude Oil Spill

Abstract:Phase-selective organogelators (PSOGs) are considered as a prospective tool for their application in oil spill remediation. However, the number of reports on the PSOGs that can be used in powder form for prompt phase-selective gelation of crude oils is still limited. In this study, a series of compounds with l-mandelic acid as the scaffold bearing different amino acid fragments have been prepared. Also, the gelation behaviors and properties of these derivatives toward organic liquids, product oils, and a type of Chinese crude oil were investigated via heating-and-cooling process, stirring, or resting operation. Besides, the micromorphologies of the resulting gels and the driving forces for the gel formation have been studied by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, UV spectroscopy, concentration-dependent 1H NMR, and X-ray diffraction. Particularly, gelator C15-Phe-Mac-Nap was shown to have the capability of congealing the Chinese crude oil selectively from water in powder form with a relatively lower gelator dosage, as compared with the other gelators we reported in the current and previous works. Moreover, gelator C15-Phe-Mac-Nap displayed some advantageous behaviors such as the reusability of gelator, excellent mechanical and chemical stability of the crude oil gels, and nontoxicity of the gelator in the aquatic environment, indicating its great potential application value for marine oil spill remediation.

Abstract:Phase-selective organogelators (PSOGs) have drawn wide attention due to their potential applications in recovery of leaked aromatics and spilled oils. However, powder form PSOGs with fast gelling abilities and broad applicabilities are still limited. Herein, we developed three D-gluconic acetal-based gelators with different alkyl chains, all of which show excellent gel properties for hydrocarbon solvents. The spectroscopic and X-ray results revealed that the gel formation was the synergy of hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking and van der Waals forces. Surprisingly, the powder form gelator A with a cis double bond in the alkyl chain could instantly and selectively gel aromatic hydrocarbons, and also rapidly solidify crude oils with widely ranging viscosities from seawater at room temperature within minutes. Further research revealed that A powder exhibited porous amorphous morphology because the cis double bonds broke the crystalline chain-chain interdigitation between the assemblies. Therefore, the fast dispersion and recombination of fibers under the action of oil molecules lead to the fast room temperature gel process. Overall, a non-toxic and low-cost powder form PSOG with rapid room temperature phase selective gelation ability for a wide range of oils makes it promising for the emergency treatment of oil spill and aromatics leakage.

Abstract:Nowadays, the environmental problem caused by oily wastewater discharge and crude oil leakage has attracted worldwide attention. Recently developed technologies for oil/water separation have been based mainly on materials with special wettability. In this work, a self-cleaning system with smart-control and reusable functions for oil/water separation has been built on cotton fabric via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA). The fabric showed high pH-and thermo-responsibility, which was strongly dependent on the pDMAEMA grafting ratio. And by modulating pH or temperature, the fabric switched from superhydrophilic (WCA similar to 0 degrees) to highly hydrophobic (WCA similar to 130 degrees), and therefore, were suitable both for the separation of water-rich or oil-rich oil/water mixtures as a type of adsorbent material. The fabric could adsorb oil over 4 times its own weight, and reversibly release it in acidic water, making the fabric easily recyclable.

Abstract:To develop a novel membrane with controllable wettability in response to external stimuli for intelligent oil/water separation is always in urgent demand. In this study, a pH-responsive nanofibrous membrane was prepared through the step-by-step modification of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) electrospun nanofiber membrane, including mussel-inspired self-polymerization of polydopamine (PDA), immobilization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and self-assembly of thiols. A rough membrane surface could be formed by the loading of AgNPs, and the subsequent introduction of HS(CH2)11CH3/HS(CH2)10COOH via metal-thiol coordination could endow the membrane with pH-responsive wettability. The surface of the membrane was able to quickly and reversely switch between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity through simply applying pH stimulus at pH 7 and 13, respectively. The membrane can be applied for separating multiphase oil/water mixtures, achieving separation efficiency of over 99.2% for light oil/water mixture and 96.5% for heavy oil/water mixture with a stable flux of around 2500 L/m2·h for water and 11,000 L/m2·h for oil over the 10-cycle separation process. Meanwhile, the membrane exhibited separation efficiency of higher than 99% for all the tested oil-in-water emulsions, and the water flux of the membrane could be effectively recovered by water rinsing. Moreover, the membrane demonstrated a good structural stability against rigorous mechanical abrasion. The pH-responsive membrane could be potentially applied for smart and energy-saving separation and recycle of oil or water from oily wastewater.

Abstract:A facile approach for the synthesis of responsive polymer composite nanotubular organogelators in large scale is reported. The exterior surface of the nanotubes is coarsening and hydrophobic after favorable growth of paramagnetic nanoparticles and oleic acid modification. All the tested organic solvents with varied polarities can be fast gelated by the addition of the composite nanotubular organogelators. The formed gel is easily removed from water with a magnet. A thermal responsive polymer PNIPAM is used to modify the surface of the composite nanotubes, it endows the release of captured oil from the gel by decreasing temperature. The composite nanotubular organogelators are promising in collecting chemical spills from water.

Abstract:The facile fabrication of a hydrogel-networks coated membrane for efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation was successfully achieved through the photo-initiated free radical polymerization of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS). Due to the combination of the special wettability of the PAMPS hydrogel with the microscale multi-porous structure of the substrate, such a membrane is able to achieve the separation of sundry surfactants stabilized oil-in-water emulsions with high separation efficiency, large permeation flux and excellent stability. In particular, the PAMPS hydrogel coated membrane exhibits selective separation for cationic and nonionic types of surfactants stabilized emulsions via hydrogen bond interactions. The fabrication protocol is facile, cost-efficient and environmentally friendly, which can be scaled up to facilitate its practicability in sewage remediation.

Abstract:In this paper, a facile approach was developed for highly effective oil/water separation by incorporating of the dimethyldiallylammonium chloride acrylamide polymer (P(AM-DMDAAC)) into graphene aerogels. The functionalized 3D graphene aerogel integrated a series of excellent physical properties, including low density (11.4 mg/cm3), large specific surface area (206.591 m2/g), and great hydrophobicity (contact angle of 142.7°). The modified aerogel showed excellent adsorption capacity for oils and organic solvents (up to 130 g/g). The saturation can be reached in a short time and the adsorption capacity remained nearly unchanged after repeated heating cycles. Meanwhile, we found a simple method to achieve controlled wettability transition of P(AM-DMDAAC)/graphene aerogels (PGAs) by changing the pH values. The hydrophobic PGA prepared at pH 2.03 showed outstanding oil/water separation performance (130 g/g). As the pH increased, the oil adsorption capabilities of PGAs decreased slightly, but the adsorption performance for the hydrophilic organic dye was significantly improved. Therefore, as a recyclable and efficient water purification material, the sustainable and environment-friendly polymer-modified graphene aerogel has great application potential.

Abstract:Frequent offshore oil leakage accidents and large quantities of oily-wastewater produced in industry and daily life bring huge challenges to global water purification . The adaptability and stability of organogels as adsorbent materials have shown wide application prospects in the field of oil-water separation. Herein, the organogels displayed stable hydrophobic/lipophilic properties with high absorption ability (1200 wt./wt%), efficient sorption of multiple emulsions (>99.0%), and good reusability. More importantly, the organogels were successfully assembled with 2D/3D substrates to achieve excellent sorption capacity (102.5 g/g) and recycling performance (50 cycles). The gel-carbon black assembled on MS (GCB-MS) sorbent with excellent photothermal conversion performance, and can rapidly heat the surface to 70.4 °C under 1.0 sunlight radiation (1.0 kW/m 2 ) and achieved an ultra-high sorption capacity of about 103 g/g for viscous crude oil. Meanwhile, the GCB-MS was combined with a pump to build continuous oil spill cleaning equipment to achieve a super-fast cleanup rate of 6.83 g/min. The developed hydrophobic organogels had been expanded unprecedentedly to realize the comprehensive treatment of oily-wastewater in complex environments, including layered oils, emulsions, and viscous crude oil spill, which provided an effective path for the comprehensive treatment of oily wastewater in complex environments.

Abstract:In the field of global water purification, the issue of marine oil spills represents a significant challenge. The use of phase-selective organogelators (PSOGs) as sorbent materials in oil spill remediation is a promising solution due to their environmental adaptability and high absorption capacity. However, there are limited reports on PSOGs that can be used in powder form for rapid phase-selective gelation of crude oils. In this context, the development of innovative dicholesteryl derivatives as low-molecular-weight organogelators (LMOGs) offers a promising solution in powder form. These gelators are synthesized through a one-pot multi-component reaction as green synthesis method, which ensures high purity and eliminates the need for harsh conditions. The incorporation of cholesterol into the gelator structure demonstrate environmental adaptability. The exceptional sorption capacity was attributed to the structured 2D/3D networks observed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The hydrophobic properties of these gelators, as evidenced by a water contact angle of 118 degrees, enable them to efficiently gel various organic solvents at low concentrations (1% w/v) at ambient temperatures, without the need for heating–cooling cycles or co-solvents. The eco-friendly nature and efficient oil–water separation capabilities of these gelators in powder form represent a significant advancement in global water purification efforts.

Abstract:pH-responsive materials with switchable wettability provide a novel strategy for oil-water separation applications. The thiol-ene click chemistry method was used to fabricate pH-responsive stainless-steel meshes (SSM) by grafting long-chain alkanes with carboxyl (COOH) and methyl (CH 3 ) groups onto the SSM surface. The pH-responsive SSM showed excellent separation efficiency (>97 %) in both superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic states, which was unaffected by the presence of NaCl in the mixed solution. The pH-responsive SSM demonstrated a fast response within 3 s and a wide pH range after pre-wetting in an alkaline solution (pH spike) due to the presence of long carbon chains containing COOH and CH 3 groups. Moreover, the mesh underwent antifouling, ultraviolet light (UV) resistance, and mechanical resistance tests, showing excellent durability and stability. The water contact angle (WCA) remained higher than 130° after 24 h of UV exposure and six rounds of wear experiments. Furthermore, the oil-water separation efficiency remained above 98.4 % after 20 cycles. The in-depth investigations conducted in this study will provide valuable insights into developing pH-responsive membranes to meet diverse demands, such as water rejection or oil rejection under complex conditions.

Water-in-Oil Emulsion Gels Stabilized by a Low-Molecular Weight Organogelator Derived from Dehydroabietic Acid

Abstract:High concentrations of surfactants or gelators are usually necessary to prepare emulsions gels with unusual physicochemical properties. This situation may be improved by innovating the aggregate morphology in systems. Herein, a rosin-based molecule is designed and synthesized using dehydroabietic acid as the starting material (denoted as R-Lys-R). The molecule acts as an effective organogelator and can gelate several hydrocarbon compounds with a minimum gelation concentration of 0.2% (w/v). Analysis using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and circular dichroism (CD) reveals that in <i>n</i>-decane, R-Lys-R forms left-handed helical fibers with a cross-sectional diameter of approximately 15 nm. The directional hydrogen bonding of the amide group is helpful to the formation of aggregates. At concentrations of R-Lys-R above 2%, water-in-oil emulsions are transformed into emulsion gels owing to the aptitude of R-Lys-R in gelating the oil phase. The concentrations of the emulsifier can be adjusted to obtain emulsion gels with different formulations. This work reveals the potential of rosin derivatives for the formation of small molecular weight organogels and provides a novel method for the utilization of natural resources in soft materials and home care products.

Abstract:Oil/water separation is difficult but essential not only for the sustainable development of human society but also for the protection of the ecological. Developing materials with controllable wettability for efficient on-demand oil/water separation is urgently needed. Inspired by the structural and functional features of the cellular plasma membrane, in this work, a dual-sensitive heterogeneity organohydrogel was fabricated by combining thermal-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and reactive polysiloxane particles (RPP). The resulting organohydrogel can adapt to temperature stimuli to realize super-wettability conversion (from superhydrophilicity (WCA is 0°) to superhydrophobicity (WCA is ∼160.5°) under-oil). In the dry state, the wettability of organohydrogel can also be adjusted to superamphiphobicity under water (OCA is ∼151.5°) or under oil (WCA is ∼162.4°) after being pre-wetted with water or oil. In addition, the outstanding film-forming property of the organohydrogel led to the formation of a coating layer on fiberglass fabric. Exhilaratingly, the coated fiberglass fabric displays stable recyclability, excellent chemical tolerance, and temporal stability, as well as demonstrates an excellent super-wettability conversion even after 90 cycles of the peeling test. Under different pH solutions, the WCA on the coated material surface was always 0° at 20 °C, while the measured WCA was always above 150° at 45 °C. Moreover, the coated fiberglass cloth could achieve on-demand oil/water mixture separation and selective separation efficiency above 98.5%. Abstract:The organogel formation of 2,3-dihydroxyimino-oleanic acid in different organic solvents was reported for the first time. The structure and physical properties of the organogel were studied by scanning electron microscopy, circular dichromism spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The intermolecular hydrogen bonding was considered as the primary driving force for gel formation, which was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy and variable temperature H-1 NMR.
