Abstract:We derive general depth-integrated model equations for overland flows featuring the evolution of suspended sediment that may be eroded from or deposited onto the underlying topography ('morphodynamics'). The resulting equations include geometric corrections that account for large variations in slope angle. These are often non-negligible for Earth-surface flows and may consequently be important for simulating natural hazards. We also show how to adapt existing finite volume schemes for the classical shallow water equations, to simulate our new equations in a way that preserves uniform steady states and exactly conserves the combined mass of the flow and bed. Finally, to demonstrate our formulation, we present computations using simple example model closures, fed by point flux sources. On initially constant slopes, flows exhibit different behaviours depending on the grade. Shallow slopes lead to weakly morphodynamic spreading flows that agree well with analytical similarity solutions. On more severe slopes, rapid erosion occurs, leading to self-channelising flows and ultimately a 'super-erosive' state, in which sediment entrainment and gravitational acceleration perpetually reinforce each other.

Abstract:When a river debouches into a shallow receiving basin, it behaves as a sediment-laden shallow jet which plays a key role in the subsequent sediment transport and morphological evolution at the river mouth. A linear stability analysis that directly incorporates the effect of the presence of suspended sediment on the hydrodynamic instability of shallow jets was performed in this study. The sediment effect was accounted for using a two-way coupling. The onset of the instability was found to be generally insensitive to the addition of moderate quantities of suspended sediment particles. However, an eigenfunction analysis indicated that the nonlinear development of the instabilities may indeed be affected by the presence of sediment. The results of this study have important implications for estuarine and deltaic geomorphology, and can inform delta restoration projects such as artificial diversion to achieve maximum land building potential.
General linear stability properties of monoclinal shallow waves

Abstract:We analyze the linear stability of monoclinal traveling waves on a constant incline, which connect uniform flowing regions of differing depths. The classical shallow-water equations are employed, subject to a general resistive drag term. This approach incorporates many flow rheologies into a single setting and enables us to investigate the features that set different systems apart. We derive simple formulae for the onset of linear instability, the corresponding linear growth rates and related properties including the existence of monoclinal waves, development of shocks and whether instability is initially triggered up- or downstream of the wave front. Also included within our framework is the presence of shear in the flow velocity profile, which is often neglected in depth-averaged studies. We find that it can significantly modify the threshold for instability. Constant corrections to the governing equations to account for sheared profiles via a 'momentum shape factor' act to stabilize traveling waves. More general correction terms are found to have a nontrivial and potentially important quantitative effect on the properties explored. Finally, we have investigated the spatial properties of the dominant (fastest growing) linear modes. We derive equations for their amplitude and frequency and find that both features can become severely amplified near the front of the traveling wave. For flood waves that propagate into a dry downstream region, this amplification is unbounded in the limit of high disturbance frequency. We show that the rate of divergence is a function of the spatial dependence of the wave depth profile at the front, which may be determined straightforwardly from the drag law.

Abstract:Purpose – The present work is devoted to the numerical study of the stability of shallow jet. The effects of important parameters on the stability behavior for large scale shallow jets are considered and investigated. Connections between the stability theory and observed features reported in the literature are emphasized. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – A linear stability analysis of shallow jet incorporating the effects of bottom topography, bed friction and viscosity has been carried out by using the shallow water stability equation derived from the depth averaged shallow water equations in conjunction with both Chézy and Manning resistance formulae. Effects of the following main factors on the stability of shallow water jets are examined: Rossby number, bottom friction number, Reynolds number, topographic parameters, base velocity profile and resistance model. Special attention has been paid to the Coriolis effects on the jet stability by limiting the rotation number in the range of Ro∈[0, 1.0]. Findings – It is found that the Rossby number may either amplify or attenuate the growth of the flow instability depending on the values of the topographic parameters. There is a regime where the near cancellation of Coriolis effects due to other relevant parameters influences is responsible for enhancement of stability. The instability can be suppressed by the bottom friction when the bottom friction number is large enough. The amplification rate may become sensitive to the relatively small Reynolds number. The stability region using the Manning formula is larger than that using the Chézy formula. The combination of these effects may stabilize or destabilize the shallow jet flow. These results of the stability analysis are compared with those from the literature. Originality/value – Results of linear stability analysis on shallow jets along roughness bottom bed are presented. Different from the previous studies, this paper includes the effects of bottom topography, Rossby number, Reynolds number, resistance formula and bed friction. It is found that the influence of Reynolds number on the stability of the jet is notable for relative small value. Therefore, it is important to experimental investigators that the viscosity should be considered with comparison to the results from inviscid assumption. In contrast with the classical analysis, the use of multi-parameters of the base velocity and topographic profile gives an extension to the jet stability analysis. To characterize the large scale motion, besides the bottom friction as proposed in the related literature, the Reynolds number Re, Rossby number Ro, the topographic parameters and parameters controlling base velocity profile may also be important to the stability analysis of shallow jet flows.

Abstract:A weakly non-linear stability analysis of two phase flow in the Blasius boundary layer has been carried out. Two mathematical models have been established based on the perturbation shape preserved assumption and linear stability model of two phase flow proposed by Stuart [On the non-linear mechanics of hydrodynamic stability, J. Fluid Mech. 4 (1958) 1–21] and Saffman [On the stability of laminar flow of dusty gas, J. Fluid Mech. 13 (1962) 120–128], respectively. The perturbation model and the perturbation energy balance equation are solved numerically with Chebyshev spectral method and artificial boundary condition. The numerical program adopted in the present study is verified by comparison with former works. The results show that the non-linear interaction between mean flow and perturbation reduces the growth rate of perturbation, while the non-linear interaction between particle phase and gas phase increases the growth rate of perturbation amplitude. The distortion of the mean flow caused by the Reynolds stress modifies the rate of transfer of energy from the mean flow to disturbance. The existence of particle alleviates the distortedness. The result also indicates that the weakly non-linear stability theory is consistent to linear stability theory, and the addition of fine and coarse particles reduces and increases the critical Reynolds number.

Abstract:Shallow water flows are common in natural or man-made hydraulic systems, for example, in the wake of islands and in the downstream of headlands and other protrusions. Experiments, numerical simulations and theoretical analysis are applied to investigate the phenomenon. The present work is devoted to the comparison of nonlinear models and linear stability analysis results. In previous work, nonlinear models focus on the spatial growth of perturbations and linear stability analysis focuses on the temporal growth of perturbations. Comparisons are then performed with Gaster’s transformation, which maps the temporal growth of perturbations to the spatial growth. However, Gaster’s transformation only works well near the neutral curve, at which the flows are marginally unstable. The paper circumvents the use of Gaster’s transformation by comparing linear temporal analysis with nonlinear temporal simulations, both focusing on the temporal growth of perturbations. It is found that within a short time the linear stability analysis underestimates the peak turbulent kinetic energy and the wavenumber at which the flow attains the peak kinetic energy. Over time, the peak energy and the corresponding wavenumber obtained from the linear stability analysis are consistent with the nonlinear simulation results. Also, an initial energy drop is observed in the nonlinear simulations but not in the linear stability analysis results. Such drop may be due to 1.) the initial transient growth which is not captured with the normal-mode based linear stability analysis, or 2.) some energy in the cross-stream velocity perturbations is converted to the potential energy, resulting in a change in the water depth, which is not captured with the rigid-lid assumption in the linear stability analysis.

Abstract:The presence of a no-slip, impermeable, adiabatic, sloped boundary in an otherwise quiescent, stably stratified, Boussinesq flow generates baroclinic vorticity within a diffusive boundary layer. Such conditions are typical of the oscillating boundary layers on adiabatic abyssal slopes, sloped lake bathymetry, and sloped coastal bathymetry in the absence of high-wavenumber internal waves, mean flows, far-field turbulence on larger scales, and resonant tidal-bathymetric interaction. We investigate the linear stability of the oscillating flow within non-dimensional parameter space typical of the $M_2$ tide and hydraulically smooth, mid-latitude abyssal slopes through Floquet linear stability analysis. The flow dynamics depend on three non-dimensional variables: the Reynolds number for Stokes' second problem (Re), the Prandtl number, and a frequency ratio that accounts for the resonance conditions (C, criticality) of the buoyant restoring force and the tidal forcing. The Floquet analysis results suggest that oscillating laminar boundary layers on adiabatic abyssal slopes are increasingly unstable as Reynolds number, criticality parameter, and/or spanwise disturbance wavenumber are increased. We also show that the two-dimensional Floquet linear instability necessarily generates three-dimensional baroclinic vorticity, which suggests that the evolution of the gravitational instabilities may be nonlinear as $t\rightarrow\infty$.
Long-wave instabilities of sloping stratified exchange flows

Abstract:We investigate the linear instability of two-layer stratified shear flows in a sloping two-dimensional channel, subject to non-zero longitudinal gravitational forces. We reveal three previously unknown instabilities, distinct from the well-known Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability (KHI) and Holmboe Wave Instability (HWI), in that they have longer wavelengths (of the order of 10 to $10^3$ shear-layer depths) and often slower growth rates. Importantly, they can grow in background flows with gradient Richardson number $\gg 1$, which offers a new mechanism to sustain turbulence and mixing in strongly stratified flows. These instabilities are shown to be generic and relatively insensitive to Reynolds number $\mathrm{Re}$, Prandtl number $\mathrm{Pr}$, base flow profile, and boundary conditions. The nonlinear evolution of these instabilities is investigated through a forced direct numerical simulation, in which the background momentum and density are sustained. The growth of long unstable waves in background flows initially stable to short wave instabilities causes a decrease in the local gradient Richardson number. This leads to local nonlinear processes that result in small-scale overturns resembling Kelvin-Helmholtz billows. Our results establish a new energy exchange pathway, where the mean kinetic energy of a strongly stratified flow is extracted by primary unstable long waves and secondary short waves, and subsequently dissipated into internal energy.

Abstract:Long waves in shallow water propagating over a background shear flow towards a sloping beach are being investigated. The classical shallow-water equations are extended to incorporate both a background shear flow and a linear beach profile, resulting in a non-reducible hyperbolic system. Nevertheless, it is shown how several changes of variables based on the hodograph transform may be used to transform the system into a linear equation which may be solved exactly using the method of separation of variables. This method can be used to investigate the run-up of a long wave on a planar beach including the development of the waterline.

Abstract:The equations describing the motion of stratified flow are given and the equations satisfied by small perturbations of a steady laminar flow are derived. The function of stratification is described by two parameters, i.e. Richardson number (Ri) and Schmidt number (Sc). The effect of Sc on the hydrodynamic stability in a flat plate boundary layer is analyzed. It is shown that if Sc is small, the stratification stabilizes laminar flow for Ri > 0, whereas the stratification has a destabilizing action if Sc is relatively large. For parallel flow, it is shown that the stability characteristics for stratified flow are still determined by the solutions of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation, but the basic stability equation is replaced by a modified equation together with an additional diffusion equation.

Abstract:In this paper we analyze the stability of equilibrium manifolds of hyperbolic shallow water moment equations. Shallow water moment equations describe shallow flows for complex velocity profiles which vary in vertical direction and the models can be seen as extensions of the standard shallow water equations. Equilibrium stability is an important property of balance laws that determines the linear stability of solutions in the vicinity of equilibrium manifolds and it is seen as a necessary condition for stable numerical solutions. After an analysis of the hyperbolic structure of the models, we identify three different stability manifolds based on three different limits of the right-hand side friction term, which physically correspond to water-at-rest, constant-velocity, and bottom-at-rest velocity profiles. The stability analysis then shows that the structural stability conditions are fulfilled for the water-at-rest equilibrium and the constant-velocity equilibrium. However, the bottom-at-rest equilibrium can lead to instable modes depending on the velocity profile. Relaxation towards the respective equilibrium manifolds is investigated numerically for different models.
Linear instability of shear thinning pressure driven channel flow

Abstract:We study theoretically pressure driven planar channel flow of shear thinning viscoelastic fluids. Combining linear stability analysis and full nonlinear simulation, we study the instability of an initially one-dimensional base state to the growth of two-dimensional perturbations with wavevector in the flow direction. We do so within three widely used constitutive models: the microscopically motivated Rolie-Poly model, and the phenomenological Johnson-Segalman and White-Metzner models. In each model, we find instability when the degree of shear thinning exceeds some level characterised by the logarithmic slope of the flow curve at its shallowest point. Specifically, we find instability for $n<n^*$, with $n^*\approx 0.21, 0.11$ and $0.30$ in the Rolie-Poly, Johnson-Segalman and White-Metzner models respectively. Within each model, we show that the critical pressure drop for the onset of instability obeys a criterion expressed in terms of this degree of shear thinning, $n$, together with the derivative of the first normal stress with respect to shear stress. Both shear thinning and rapid variations in first normal stress across the channel are therefore key ingredients driving the instability. In the Rolie-Poly and Johnson-Segalman models, the underlying mechanism appears to involve the destabilisation of a quasi-interface that exists in each half of the channel, across which the normal stress varies rapidly. In the White-Metzner model, no such quasi-interface exists, but the criterion for instability nonetheless appears to follow the same form as in the Rolie-Poly and Johnson-Segalman models. This presents an outstanding puzzle concerning any possibly generic nature of the instability mechanism. We finally make some briefly comments on the Giesekus model, which is rather different in its predictions from the other three.

Linear Analysis of Longshore Currents Instability over Mild Slopes

Abstract:Longshore current instability is important to nearshore hydrodynamic and sediment transport. This paper investigates the longshore current instability growth model based experimental data with different velocity profiles of slopes 1:100 and 1:40 by adopting a linear shear instability model with the bottom friction effects. The results show that: (1) Only backshear mode exists in the instability of longshore current for slope 1:40 and frontshear and backshear modes may exist slope 1:100. (2) The peaks of linear instability growth mode for slope 1:100 correspond to three cases: the dominant peak is formed by the joint action of both frontshear and backshear, or by backshear alone without the existence of the smaller peak or formed by either the frontshear or backshear. (3) Bottom friction can decrease the corresponding unstable growth rate but it cannot change the unstable fluctuation period. The results of fluctuation period, wavelength and spatial variation obtained by the analysis of linear shear instability are in good agreement with experimental results.
Properties and baroclinic instability of stratified thermal upper-ocean flow

Abstract:We study the properties of, and perform a stability analysis of a baroclinic zonal current in, a thermal rotating shallow-water model, sometimes called \emph{Ripa's model}, featuring stratification for quasigeostrophic upper-ocean dynamics. The model has Lie--Poisson Hamiltonian structure. In addition to Casimirs, the model supports integrals of motion that neither form the kernel of the bracket nor are related to explicit symmetries. The model sustains Rossby waves and a neutral model, whose spurious growth is prevented by a positive-definite integral, quadratic on the deviation from the motionless state. A baroclinic zonal jet with vertical curvature is found to be spectrally stable for specific configurations of the gradients of layer thickness, vertically averaged buoyancy, and buoyancy frequency. Only a subset of such states was found Lyapunov stable using the available integrals, except the newly reported ones, whose role in constraining stratified thermal flow remains elusive. The existence of Lyapunov-stable states enabled bounding the nonlinear growth of perturbations to spectrally unstable states. Our results do not support the generality of earlier numerical evidence on the suppression of submesoscale wave activity as a result of the inclusion of stratification in thermal shallow-water theory, which we supported with direct numerical simulations.

On the stability of fully nonlinear hydraulic-fall solutions to the forced water-wave problem

Abstract:Two-dimensional free-surface flow over localised topography is examined with the emphasis on the stability of hydraulic-fall solutions. A Gaussian topography profile is assumed with a positive or negative amplitude modelling a bump or a dip, respectively. Steady hydraulic-fall solutions to the full incompressible, irrotational Euler equations are computed, and their linear and nonlinear stability is analysed by computing eigenspectra of the pertinent linearised operator and by solving an initial value problem. The computations are carried out numerically using a specially developed computational framework based on the finite element method. The Hamiltonian structure of the problem is demonstrated and stability is determined by computing eigenspectra of the pertinent linearised operator. It is found that a hydraulic-fall flow over a bump is spectrally stable. The corresponding flow over a dip is found to be linearly unstable. In the latter case, time-dependent simulations show that the flow ultimately settles into a time-periodic motion that corresponds to an invariant solution in an appropriately defined phase space. Physically, the solution consists of a localised large amplitude wave that pulsates above the dip while simultaneously emitting nonlinear cnoidal waves in the upstream direction and multi-harmonic linear waves in the downstream direction.

Abstract:Linear stability analysis is extensively used for predicting the transition between stratified and slug flow. In the present work, a one-dimensional two-fluid flow is linearly perturbed to evaluate the behavior of the dispersion curves through parameters such as the maximum wave growth rate ( ωI,max ), the fastest-growing wave ( kmax ) and the wave that makes the problem permanently stable ( kc ) as a function of the gas and liquid superficial velocities. The novelty of this article relies upon coupling the analysis of the behavior of transition-related parameters to the physical effects that are responsible for stabilizing and destabilizing the flow interface. The coupling of the transition analysis with the physical parameters showed potential as a reliable way of explaining the obtained transition behavior. By doing this, the stabilizing effects of gravity and surface tension are found to be invariable to the superficial velocities of the phases. On the other hand, the destabilizing effect of inertia increased with phase superficial velocities, while the shear stress increases with the liquid superficial velocity and shows a non-monotonic behavior with the gas superficial velocity. Although the overall trend of ωI,max , kmax and kc was to increase with the superficial velocities of the phases, they were directly affected by the shear stress behavior, also showing a non-monotonic trend.

Following marginal stability manifolds in quasilinear dynamical reductions of multiscale flows in two space dimensions

Abstract:A two-dimensional extension of a recently developed formalism for slow-fast quasilinear (QL) systems subject to fast instabilities is derived. Prior work has demonstrated that the emergent dynamics of these systems is characterized by a slow evolution of mean fields coupled to marginally stable, fast fluctuation fields. By exploiting this emergent behavior, an efficient fast-eigenvalue/slow-initial-value solution algorithm can be developed in which the amplitude of the fast fluctuations is slaved to the slowly evolving mean fields to ensure marginal stability (and temporal scale separation) is maintained. For 2D systems that are spatially-extended in one direction, the fluctuation eigenfunctions are labeled by their wavenumbers characterizing spatial variability in that direction, and the marginal mode(s) also must coincide with the fastest-growing mode(s) over all admissible wavenumbers. Here, we introduce two equivalent procedures for deriving an ordinary differential equation governing the slow evolution of the wavenumber of the fastest-growing fluctuation mode that simultaneously must be slaved to the mean dynamics to ensure the mode has zero growth rate. We illustrate the procedure in the context of a 2D model partial differential equation that shares certain attributes with the equations governing strongly stratified shear flows. The slaved evolution follows one or more marginal stability manifolds, which constitute select state-space structures that are not invariant under the full flow dynamics yet capture quasi-coherent states in physical space in a manner analogous to invariant solutions identified in, e.g., transitionally-turbulent shear flows. Accordingly, we propose that marginal stability manifolds are central organizing structures in a dynamical systems description of certain classes of multiscale flows where scale separation justifies a QL approximation of the dynamics.

Numerical Modelling Of Morpho-Dynamic Processes With Multi-Thread Flows

Abstract:In order to investigate the channel migration processes with multi-thread flow, a physics based morpho-dynamic model has been developed which comprises a depth-integrated hydrodynamic model for rapidly varying unsteady flows and a non-uniform sediment transport model for morphology evolution. The sheltering effect for non-uniform sediments and the influences of bed slope and secondary flow are taken into account in the sediment transport model. The model is applied to an experimental braided river and that the numerical model predicted channel patterns are shown to generally resemble the experimental observations. The model is capable of reproducing the main features of morpho-dynamic processes, including the channel evolution from a straight channel to a curved channel, from a single-thread channel to a multi-thread pattern, and the local morphologic changes such as the inception, development and disappearance of bends, bars, bifurcations and confluences.

Abstract:Although riparian vegetation is present in or along many water courses of the world, its active role resulting from the interaction with flow and sediment processes has only recently become an active field of research. Especially, the role of vegetation in the process of river pattern formation has been explored and demonstrated mostly experimentally and numerically until now. In the present work, we shed light on this subject by performing a linear stability analysis on a simple model for riverbed vegetation dynamics coupled with the set of classical river morphodynamic equations. The vegetation model only accounts for logistic growth, local positive feedback through seeding and resprouting, and mortality by means of uprooting through flow shear stress. Due to the simplicity of the model, we can transform the set of equations into an eigenvalue problem and assess the stability of the linearized equations when slightly perturbated away from a spatially homogeneous solution. If we couple vegetation dynamics with a 1D morphodynamic framework, we observe that instability towards long sediment waves is possible due to competitive interaction between vegetation growth and mortality. Moreover, the domain in the parameter space where perturbations are amplified was found to be simply connected. Subsequently, we proceed to the analysis of vegetation dynamics coupled with a 2D morphodynamic framework, which can be used to evaluate instability towards alternate and multiple bars. It is found that two kinds of instabilities, which are discriminated mainly by the Froude number, occur in a connected domain in the parameter space. At lower Froude number, instability is mainly governed by sediment dynamics and leads to the formation of alternate and multiple bars while at higher Froude number instability is driven by vegetation dynamics, which only allows for alternate bars.

Abstract:We investigate the instabilities and transition mechanisms of Boussinesq stratified boundary layers on sloping boundaries when subjected to oscillatory body forcing parallel to the slope. Such conditions are typical of the boundary layers generated by low wavenumber internal tides sloshing up and down adiabatic abyssal slopes in the absence of mean flows, high wavenumber internal tides, and resonant tide-bathymetry interactions. We examine flows within a region of non-dimensional parameter space typical of the mid- to low-latitude oceanic $M_2$ tides on hydraulically smooth abyssal slopes by direct numerical simulation. We find that at low Reynolds numbers transition-to-turbulence pathways arise from both shear and gravitational instabilities, and we find that the boundary layers are stabilized by increased outer boundary layer stratification during the downslope oscillation phase. However, if rotation is significant (low slope Burger numbers) we find that boundary layer turbulence is sustained throughout the oscillation period, resembling Stokes-Ekman layer turbulence. Our results suggest that oscillating boundary layers on smooth abyssal slopes created by low wavenumber $M_2$ tides do not cause significant irreversible turbulent buoyancy flux (mixing) and that flat-bottom dissipation rate models derived from the tide amplitude are accurate within an order of magnitude.
