Abstract:Visualization techniques on hierarchical information have been proved their capability in presenting structured disk storage data. However, most existing techniques represented with simple visual methods such as pie chart or histogram, lacking the ability of grasping the usage of the computer. This paper presents a new interactive visualization technique named iHard Disk Viewer (iHDViewer), which aims to display file details and their movement histories, as well as predict the user's activities through visualization results. This tool mainly utilizes four different view panels to display the distribution of files and file folders for a computer system. Specifically, A tree view explains the general distribution of the whole disk storage; A river trend view tracks the files moving history, which is implemented by cubic spline interpolator with restricted boundary conditions to ensure the trend stability and information accuracy; We also use the concept of coordinate extension to visualize the file moving events which supports more intuitive results; A filelist view panel shows the details of the selected files; while a circle view panel interactively displays the status of files and file folders. In addition, considering the importance of human visual perception system in the data analyzing processes, we utilize three color design principles to work through all visual methods. Lastly, this paper demonstrates the effectiveness and efficiency of our new idea to visually analyze computer FileSystems.
Rayleigh-Wave Dispersion Curves from Energetic Hurricanes in the Southeastern United States

Abstract:Seismic records during energetic storms, similar to earthquake signals, carry information about the Earth's interior. However, the utility of these records is rare in seismic imaging, because signal onsets in storm-generated microseisms are difficult to pick. The exciting seismic sources are also unsteady. Here, we present a new method for extracting accurate Rayleigh-wave dispersion curves from broadband seismic recordings made during the pas- sage of hurricanes by incorporating Shen et al. (2012) cross-correlation strategy with Wang et al. (2019) frequency-Bessel transform array stacking technique. We show that surface wave dispersion curves are observed in the seismic recordings made of four hurricanes. Compared with dispersion curves from hurricanes traveling onshore or in the deepwater, dispersion curves have higher signal-to-noise ratios from hurricanes moving near the coast or along the continental shelf. The average dispersion curve obtained from stacked cross correlations of all the four hurricanes agrees closely with that obtained from yearly ambient noise. We utilize the average dispersion curve from hurricanes to obtain a reliable shear-wave velocity (V-s) model. Our V-s model matches that derived from annual ambient seismic noise results with an average difference less than 0.1 km/s in the crust and uppermost mantle. This study suggests that hurricane-based dispersion curves can be an effective supplement to surface-wave tomography.

Abstract:In geo-related fields such as urban informatics, atmospheric science, and geography, large-scale spatial time (ST) series (i.e., geo-referred time series) are collected for monitoring and understanding important spatiotemporal phenomena. ST series visualization is an effective means of understanding the data and reviewing spatiotemporal phenomena, which is a prerequisite for in-depth data analysis. However, visualizing these series is challenging due to their large scales, inherent dynamics, and spatiotemporal nature. In this study, we introduce the notion of patterns of evolution in ST series. Each evolution pattern is characterized by 1) a set of ST series that are close in space and 2) a time period when the trends of these ST series are correlated. We then leverage Storyline techniques by considering an analogy between evolution patterns and sessions, and finally design a novel visualization called GeoChron, which is capable of visualizing large-scale ST series in an evolution pattern-aware and narrative-preserving manner. GeoChron includes a mining framework to extract evolution patterns and two-level visualizations to enhance its visual scalability. We evaluate GeoChron with two case studies, an informal user study, an ablation study, parameter analysis, and running time analysis.

Abstract:Many prevalent visualization packages can be used to visualize the GDP data from different perspectives. However, it is difficult to integrate these visualizations and provide a comprehensive analysis to assist users get deeper insights into the various economic features of GDP data, due to its spatio-temporal and multidimensional attributes. In this paper, we propose a visualization tool for the analysis of spatio-temporal multidimensional GDP data, aiming at the combination of the extraction of economic clusters in a time period and the track of dynamic feature evolutions across time periods. MDS is first employed to reduce the multiple dimensions of GDP data, in which the attributes used to achieve similarity matrix are selected interactively by users, according to their requirements. The 2D coordinates obtained by MDS are further clustered based on a hierarchical clustering scheme, allowing the analysts to visually capture the economic features of interest in a time period. We also design a temporal visualization to visually present the dynamic changes of clusters, which largely helps users track the various evolutions of economic features. In addition, stability is defined to evaluate the disorder of clusters between adjacent time periods and used to map meaningful colors to different glyphs in the visualizations. A rich set of interactions are further provided to help users highlight and explore economic features of interest. We demonstrate the usefulness of our system in two case studies based on a real-world GDP data of China.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal patterns are one of the greatest interests and provide valuable insights into chronological events occurring in space. A tropical cyclone (TC) track is defined as a sequence of successive points, and several different types of analyses are performed to explore the temporal and spatial patterns of the TCs in the Northwest Pacific and along the coastline of China during 1949–2014. Results show that (1) the number of TCs is getting more frequent from April to August and less frequent from August to October with the peak occurring in August almost every year; (2) the mean of the sizes of the annual temporal clusters during 1949–2014 is 52.5 (days), the standard deviation is 17.0 (days), and the average starting point is the 210.5th day; (3) the spatial clusters are located in two areas: the boundary of Guangxi and Guangdong provinces and the boundary of Fujian and Zhejiang provinces; and (4) the within-strata variance is less than the between-strata variance, which implies the locational and seasonal factors are the potential determinants of the heterogeneity of the TCs. Furthermore, several maps representing the hazards of TCs are produced. According to the resultant maps, 12 coastal prefectures (Zhanjiang, Maoming, Fuzhou, Huizhou, Yangjiang, Qinzhou, Ningde, Quanzhou, Jiangmen, Nanning, Zhangzhou, and Hangzhou) have return periods of less than two years, and the two island provinces of Hainan and Taiwan are visited by TCs the most. Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, and Zhejiang provinces in particular suffered severely from the destructive TCs.

Abstract:Global climate change has escalated flood risks, necessitating advanced hydrodynamic models for predicting watershed dynamics. Integrating flow‐field visualization with web maps offers a time‐sensitive, geographic context for sharing and understanding these dynamic changes virtually. Traditional methods use texture series on maps for flow visualization but fall short in interactive detail examination. Drawing geometric shapes directly on maps has been limited by low efficiency. Addressing the need for interactive visualization and efficiency, this study presents a texture polymorphism strategy for geometric visualization of time‐varying flow fields. This approach combines geometric style simulation with texture‐assisted computation, optimizing interactivity and performance on web map platforms. Our evaluation confirms that this method enhances usability and integration, ensuring high performance in visualizing flow dynamics.

Abstract:The air quality monitoring data presents significant spatio-temporal multidimensional attributes.The traditional parallel coordinates are able to reveal multiple attributes,but show some limitations in terms of spatio-temporal analysis of the air quality monitoring data.In this paper,we design a visual analysis system aiming at the exploration of the spatio-temporal characteristics of atmospheric pollution.Firstly,the parallel coordinates are employed to display multiple attributes of a section of air quality monitoring data,which also allow users to interactively exchange the spatio-temporal perspective and specify the axis order.Some metrics are used to measure the difference of data in the parallel coordinates,including angle,area,and correlation.The matrix graph and interactive bar chart are applied to display the difference of data from different perspectives.We then weight the matrix graphs to construct a similarity matrix and use the MDS to reduce the original multidimensional data into 2D coordinates.A hierarchical clustering scheme is used to classify the coordinates.Furthermore,a design of time metaphor and an abstract of space are used to enable users achieve the spatio-temporal features in the air quality monitoring data.Convenient interactions are also integrated in this system to help users deeply investigate atmospheric pollution.A large number of experimental results as well as credible user studies further demonstrate the effectiveness and practicability of the system.
It's a Wrap! Visualisations that Wrap Around Cylindrical, Toroidal, or Spherical Topologies

Abstract:Traditional visualisations are designed to be shown on a flat surface (screen or page) but most data is not "flat". For example, the surface of the earth exists on a sphere, however, when that surface is presented on a flat map, key information is hidden, such as geographic paths on the spherical surface being wrapped across the boundaries of the flat map. Similarly, cyclical time-series data has no beginning or end. When such cyclical data is presented on a traditional linear chart, the viewer needs to perceive continuity of the visualisation across the chart's boundaries. Mentally reconnecting the chart across such a boundary may induce additional cognitive load. More complex data such as a network diagram with hundreds or thousands of links between data points leads to a densely connected structure that is even less "flat" and needs to wrap around in multiple dimensions. To improve the usability of these visualisations, this thesis explores a novel class of interactive wrapped data visualisations, i.e., visualisations that wrap around continuously when interactively panned on a two-dimensional projection of surfaces of 3D shapes, specifically, cylinder, torus, or sphere. We start with a systematic exploration of the design space of interactive wrapped visualisations, characterising the visualisations that help people understand the relationship within the data. Subsequently, we investigate a series of wrappable visualisations for cyclical time series, network, and geographic data. We show that these interactive visualisations better preserve the spatial relations in the case of geospatial data, and better reveal the data's underlying structure in the case of abstract data such as networks and cyclical time series. Furthermore, to assist future research and development, we contribute layout algorithms and toolkits to help create pannable wrapped visualisations.

Abstract:In SciVis Contest 2018, an ensemble dataset is provided to study the effect of asteroid impacts on ocean. The dataset includes seven simulations covering cases in conditions with different factors such as size of asteroid, whether airburst happens, and angle of entry. We build an interactive online system to study the problem. Three views including a button view, a timeline view and a rendering view are provided to support users' explorative operations and guide them to get an overview understanding of events in all simulations as long as users focusing on differences between simulations, and finally users can find out something interesting.

Abstract:Given the large impacts of tropical cyclones (TCs) on human society, the response of TC activity to climate change has widely drawn attention from both society and scientists. However, assessing how historical TC activity, especially intensity, evolved with climate change has proven challenging due to incomplete TC records in the early years. Here, we introduce the Reanalysis-Based Global Tropical Cyclone Tracks Dataset for the Twentieth Century (RGTracks-20C), which is reconstructed from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Twentieth Century Reanalysis (20CRv3) using two tropical cyclone tracking algorithms. Validations based on observations in the modern satellite era verify the ability of the RGTracks-20C to capture the climatology and long-term variability of TC numbers, tracks, duration, and intensity across various ocean basins. Furthermore, the RGTracks-20C fills the gaps of the incomplete TC track information, including position and intensity, in the early observational data. The RGTracks-20C is the first publicly available reanalysis-based century-long global TC track dataset, providing an alternative data reference for future research about climate change and TC-related disasters.
GraphTransformers for Geospatial Forecasting of Hurricane Trajectories

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a novel framework for trajectory prediction of geospatial sequences using GraphTransformers. When viewed across several sequences, we observed that a graph structure automatically emerges between different geospatial points that is often not taken into account for such sequence modeling tasks. We show that by leveraging this graph structure explicitly, geospatial trajectory prediction can be significantly improved. Our GraphTransformer approach improves upon state-of-the-art Transformer based baseline significantly on HURDAT, a dataset where we are interested in predicting the trajectory of a hurricane on a 6 hourly basis.

Abstract:In coastal regions, water, wind, gravitation, vegetation, and human activity continuously alter landscape surfaces. Visualizations are important for understanding coastal landscape evolution and its driving processes. Visualizing change in highly dynamic coastal terrain poses a formidable challenge; the combination of natural and anthropogenic forces leads to cycles of retreat and recovery and complex morphology of landforms. In recent years, repeated high-resolution laser terrain scans have generated a time series of point cloud data that represent landscapes at snapshots in time, including the impacts of major storms. In this article, we build on existing approaches for visualizing spatial–temporal data to create a collection of perceptual visualizations to support coastal terrain evolution analysis. We extract terrain features and track their migration; we derive temporal summary maps and heat graphs that quantify the pattern of elevation change and sediment redistribution and use the space–time cube concept to create visualizations of terrain evolution. The space–time cube approach allows us to represent shoreline evolution as an isosurface extracted from a voxel model created by stacking time series of digital elevation models. We illustrate our approach on a series of Light Detection and Ranging surveys of sandy North Carolina barrier islands. Our results reveal terrain changes of shoreline and dune ridge migration, dune breaches and overwash, the formation of new dune ridges, and the construction and destruction of homes, changes which are due to erosion and accretion, hurricanes, and human activities. These events are all visualized within their geographic and temporal contexts.

Abstract:Given the significant damage that hurricanes can cause every year, accurate forecasts of these extreme weather events are crucial. Ocean warming can substantially impact the intensity and track of hurricanes in the future. Forecasting the track of hurricanes is typically more challenging than intensity predictions since tracks are influenced not only by hurricane vortex dynamics but also by global and synoptic weather systems (i.e., environmental flow). The dynamical mechanisms that modulate hurricane trajectories under changes in the surface temperature and friction are not comprehensively established yet. The primary objective of this paper is to address this knowledge gap by conducting six real hurricanes and some non-hurricane simulations using the Weather and Research Forecasting (WRF) model. In total, 90 WRF simulations are carried out to characterize the impacts of varying the surface temperature and drag on hurricane tracks and their relationship with environmental flow patterns. It is found that ocean warming tends to intensify hurricanes by ∼20 % and decrease their azimuthal translational velocity, and vice versa when the surface is cooled. Hurricanes move more towards the west over the Atlantic Ocean when the surface temperature is decreased and vice versa. This was shown to be due to the changes in the average azimuthal speed of environmental flows. Increasing the surface temperature, destabilizes the atmosphere, and increases the surface friction velocity. Hence, increased surface friction appears to slow down the environmental flow and consequently hurricane track azimuthal translational speed. This finding was confirmed by another suite of simulations in which only the surface roughness length of the low-wind environmental flow regime was altered. It was shown that surface drag changes have a similar impact on hurricane tracks as surface temperature variations. Decreasing the default surface drag for low-wind regimes tends to further move the hurricanes toward the west and vice versa. This paper provides notable insights into future hurricane track trends and the role of ocean temperature and momentum exchange coefficients in hurricane track and environmental flow patterns. Moreover, the results of this study can be useful to advance surface layer parameterizations and their impacts on hurricane track forecasts in weather/climate models.

Gap Filling of Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder Data as Applied to Hurricane Warm Core Animations

Abstract:As a microwave radiometer seeing through clouds, Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) observations play a critical role in visually monitoring hurricane warm core structures. However, the presence of orbit gaps within the ATMS observations at low latitudes regions, where hurricanes frequently develop, raises concerns in monitoring hurricanes' spatial variability. To resolve this issue, this study generates gap‐filled ATMS brightness temperature data by using the smoothing algorithm of Penalized Least Square Discrete Cosine Transform. The accuracies of the missing‐filled brightness temperatures for temperature sounding channels are approximately within one Kelvin. Furthermore, the gap‐filled brightness temperature data from channels 5‐12 are utilized to establish a three‐dimensional Hurricane Warm Core Animation System (HWCAS) in near real time (NRT), which helps to visually observe realistic warm core structures of a hurricane system. The information of hurricane warm core over open oceans and coastal areas is derived using a combination of three new regression‐based atmospheric temperature retrieval algorithms, with the averaged error typically within ±1K at the vertical levels a warm‐core could occur. Each animation consists of 97 two‐dimensional atmospheric temperature anomaly images at different cross sections through hurricane core regions. The retrieved maximum temperature anomalies show well the formation, intensification, weakening, re‐intensification and dissipation stages of hurricane Florence that are similar to those from the ECMWF analysis. They also show similar weakening and re‐intensifying stages to those of the maximum sustained winds by the best track data, albeit with some temporal lead/lag. With its strength in NRT hurricane monitoring, the HWCAS demonstrate its great potential in providing meteorologists with timely information of temperature anomaly fields in the inner‐core regions of a hurricane.

A GIS based system is developed for typhoon data management and analysis, typhoon simulation and hazard assessment for southeast coast of China in this paper. A typhoon database by Microsoft Access is designed. Data manipulation and analysis, typhoon simulation and hazard assessment, and visualization of results are implemented on GIS platform. This GIS-based typhoon database and analysis system greatly facilitates typhoon hazard assessment.

Abstract:As a frontier research topic in the field of scientific visualization, trajectory data visualization extracts valuable patterns and knowledge from trajectory data for decision support via spatiotemporal trajectory visualization techniques. We propose the concept of multivariate trajectory data and interpret two categories of attributes that are based on geographical space and abstract space. Properly analyzing multivariate trajectory data depends on many factors such as visualization task and data sparsity. Therefore, we generalize rich interactions to explore the evolution of trajectory events and transform the issue into a more intelligibly perceptual task, which derives our discussion regarding advantages and limitations of the analytical methods. This review endeavors to provide a quick and thorough cognition and comprehension with regard to fundamental features and numerous outcomes in visual analytics for trajectory data, seeks to promote comparisons and criticisms about the descriptive framework for multivariate spatiotemporal trajectory data visualization, and aims to encourage the exploration of emerging methods and techniques.

Abstract:In this article we survey the basic concepts of visualization and its historical development. More details are given on the introduction of each sub-domain of visualization research: scientific visualization, information visualization and visual analytics respectively. Examples are given to illustrate the new development in this area. The case studies include the visualization and visual analytics on atmosphere simulation data, earthquake catalog data, and traffic trajectory data. Through exploration on these cases, we illustrated new approaches of analyzing and interoperating the massive amount of high dimensional data produced by measurement or computation. General strategies of visualizing such kind of data are discussed.
