Abstract:Impeding high temperature sintering is challengeable for synthesis of carbon-supported single-atom catalysts (C-SACs), which requires high-cost precursor and strictly-controlled procedures. Herein, by virtue of the ultrastrong polarity of salt melts, sintering of metal atoms is effectively suppressed. Meanwhile, doping with inorganic sulfur anions not only produces sufficient anchoring sites to achieve high loading of atomically dispersed Co up to 13.85 wt.%, but also enables their electronic and geometric structures to be well tuned. When served as a cathode catalyst in dye-sensitized solar cells, the C-SAC with Co-N4-S2 moieties exhibits high activity towards the iodide reduction reaction (IRR), achieving a higher power conversion efficiency than that of conventional Pt counterpart. Density function theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the superior IRR activity was ascribed to the unique structure of Co-N4-S2 moieties with lower reaction barriers and moderate binding energy of iodine on the Co center, which was beneficial to I2 dissociation.

Abstract:The exploration of catalysts with remarkable activity and good stability toward the Co2+/3+(bpy)3 redox reaction is highly desirable for hybrid photovoltaics. In this study, Mo-single-atom catalysts have been successfully synthesized through a facile “embedding–sintering–etching” approach. The as-obtained Mo- single-atom catalysts (SACs) featured the coordination of each Mo-single atom with four nitrogen atoms (Mo1–N4) within the nitrogen-doped carbon (N–C) support, which was verified by X-ray absorption fine structure analysis and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy. The electrocatalytic performance of the Mo–N–C SACs outperformed the activity of the reference N–C and Pt counterpart toward the Co2+/3+(bpy)3 redox reaction. Moreover, compared with the Pt counterpart, the Mo–N–C SACs presented good stability toward the Co2+/3+(bpy)3 redox reaction during the durability test. The power conversion efficiency of hybrid photovoltaics employing the Mo–N–C SAC-based cathode was up to 10.71%, which could be comparable to the device with the Pt counterpart (10.43%), exceeding that with reference N–C (7.17%). The Kelvin probe force microscopy measurement revealed that a moderate energy-level matching with the Co2+/3+(bpy)3 redox couple was achieved after the formation of Mo1–N4 moieties within the N–C support, which contributed to the enhanced catalytic activity. The superior catalytic activity correlated with favorable adsorption of Co2+/3+(bpy)3 redox and electron transferring from Mo1–N4 moieties to Co2+/3+(bpy)3 redox, which was confirmed by density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have demonstrated catalytic efficacy toward lithium polysulfide conversion in Li-S batteries. However, achieving high-density M-Nx sites with rational design by a simple method is still challenging to date. Herein, an ultrathin porous 3D carbon-supported single-atom catalyst (SACo/NDC) is synthesized with a salt-template strategy via a facile freeze-drying and one-step pyrolysis procedure and serves well as a sulfur host. The well-defined 3D carbon structure can effectively alleviate volume stress and confine polysulfides inside. Moreover, the dispersed Co-Nx sites exhibit strong chemical adsorption function and valid catalytic efficiency to LiPSs redox conversion. As a result, the SACo/NDC cathodes display enhanced long-term cycling stability and better rate capability.

Abstract:Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have shown great promise for use in contemporary energy applications owing to their unique structures and tunable functionality. Here, we report a CMP embedded with a single-atom Co catalyst (Co-CMP) as an electrocatalytic sulfur host for promoting the cathode reactions of lithium−sulfur (Li−S) batteries. The Co-CMP was synthesized by copolymerizing a dibromo salcyen Co complex with tris(ethynylthiophene)triazine using standard Sonogashira coupling methodology. In addition to featuring a single-atom catalyst (SAC), the Co-CMP possesses a high quantity of pyridinic nitrogen atoms and relatively large pore sizes that collectively facilitate sulfur cathode chemistry. The performance displayed by Li−S cells fabricated with the Co-CMP was outstanding when compared with cells that were devoid of a SAC, particularly in terms of specific capacity (1404 vs. 1338 mA h g−1 at 0.1 C), rate capability (766 vs. 613 mA h g−1 at 2 C), and cycling stability (549 vs. 314 mA h g−1 after 1000 cycles at 0.5 C). Density functional theory calculations in conjunction with X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy measurements revealed that the single-atom Co catalyst lowers the cathode reaction energies by forming bonding interactions with the polysulfide anions as well as the Li cations that are present in sulfur cathodes. Since the methodology is modular and obviates the extreme steps required by other approaches, it can be employed to synthesize new classes of CMPs containing SACs with predictable structures and functions for use in a broad range of contemporary catalytic applications.

Abstract:Carbon-supported single-atom catalysts (C-SACs) demonstrate great potential in various key electrochemical reactions. Nevertheless, the development of facile and economical strategies is highly appealing yet challenging given that the commonly used pyrolysis method has strict requirements on the structure and composition of precursors. Here, we demonstrate for the first time a facile and low-cost pyrolysis strategy assisted by molten salts at high temperature for preparing porous C-SACs with well-dispersed Co-N4 sites directly from a Chlorella precursor. Based on the X-ray absorption fine structure results and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy images, we show that single atom Co-N4 moieties are anchored on a carbon matrix. A porous structure with a large specific surface area (2907 m2 g-1) and atomically dispersed active sites of Co provide the as-prepared Co-N/C-SAC with excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability for the ORR. The electrochemical measurements show that the half-wave potential and limited current density of this material are 0.83 V vs. RHE and 5.5 mA cm-2, respectively, which are comparable to those of commercial Pt/C.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have shown great potential in a wide variety of chemical reactions and become the most active new frontier in catalysis due to the maximum efficiency of metal atom use. The key obstacle in preparing SAs lies in the development of appropriate supports that can avoid aggregation or sintering during synthetic procedures. As such, achieving high loadings of isolated SAs is nontrivial and challenging. Conventional methods usually afford the formation of SAs with extremely low loadings (less than 1.5 wt%). In this work, a new in situ preparation strategy that enables the synthesis of isolated cobalt (Co) SAs with an exceptionally high metal loading, up to 5.9 wt%, is developed. The approach is based on a simple one-step pyrolysis of a nitrogen-enriched molecular carbon precursor (1,4,5,8,9,12-hexaazatriphenylene hexacarbonitrile) and CoCl2. Furthermore, due to the successful electron transfer from carbon nitride to the isolated Co SAs, we demonstrate a high-performance photocatalytic H2 production using Co SAs as a co-catalyst, and the evolution rate is measured to be 1180 μmol g-1 h-1. We anticipate that this new study will inspire the discovery of more isolated SACs with high metal loadings, evidently advancing the development of this emerging type of advanced catalysts.

Abstract:Exploring new synthetic strategies for single-atom catalysts (SACs) is filled with promise for the production of SACs. Conventional pyrolysis of selected precursors for SACs requires well-controlled pyrolysis conditions, and currently, it is still a critical challenge to establish a versatile strategy for preparing well-defined SACs. Herein, we demonstrate a facile mechanochemical-induced self-sustaining reaction to fabricate Co SACs supported by nitrogen-doped carbon via direct milling of cobalt (II) 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(4′-bromophenyl)porphyrin (Co-TPP-Br) with calcium carbide. The as-prepared ball-milling sample (BM) Co-BM-C can be directly obtained without the utilization of pre-prepared carbon support or further pyrolysis procedure. Furthermore, the obtained Co-BM-C shows both excellent performance for oxygen evolution (240 mV overpotential@10 mA cm−2) and hydrogen evolution (126 mV overpotential @10 mA cm−2) in 1 M KOH, exhibiting great potential as the water-splitting electrocatalyst (1.60 V@10 mA cm−2). Therefore, the present study not only proposes new insights on preparing SACs but also provides new opportunities for water-splitting devices.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are considered one of the promising strategies to achieve efficient energy conver-sion, due to their advantage of both maximum atomic utilization and minimum catalyst cost. However, finding a balance between increasing the atom loading and preventing the agglomeration of metal single atoms is a current research hotspot. Herein, we have developed single-atom cobalt embedded in N-doped carbon nanoboxes as high-efficiency bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting in alkaline/acidic electrolytes. Due to the reliable metal-nonmetal bonds between the Co single atom and the substrate carbon, where the uniformly dispersed Co atoms could be effectively and stably riveted on the carbon nanoboxes, and the as-prepared elec-trocatalyst possesses high mass loading of single Co atoms (similar to 10.2 wt%). In addition, the systematic X-ray ab-sorption fine structure (XAFS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to further investigate the relationship between coordination number, configuration and electrocatalytic properties of Co single atoms and N atoms. Based on the above results, the presence of Co atoms induces the formation of pyrr-N and possesses Co@CNB-N4 configuration with HER overpotential of 45 mV, comparable to Pt/C (20 wt%). As for OER, Co@CNB-N4 still has satisfactory catalytic performance, superior to the benchmark catalyst RuO2. Thus, this work builds a bridge to understand the impact of metal single atoms and substrate configuration on catalytic performance and opens a door to the successful synthesis of SACs with high loading of non-precious metal atoms, high atomic utilization and electrocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Single-atomic catalysts (SACs) have been emerging as one of potential candidates in catalysts, owing to their unique merits with extremely high specific surface area as well as remarkably exposed active sites. Herein, we develop an in-situ gas-phase cation exchange strategy for engineering single-atomic Co on the surface of TiO2 photoanode toward solar water splitting. It is verified that the atomically-dispersed Co with Co-O coordination could optimize the surface electronic structures, enhance the light absorption, promote the photoinduced charge transfer, lower the reaction barrier and accelerate the reaction kinetics, which consequently enable the overall improved photoelectrochemical (PEC) behaviors for photoanodes. As a proof of concept, the as-constructed TiO2-based photoanodes deliver robust stability up to 100 h and a photocurrent density up to 1.47 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which are superior to those of pristine TiO2, representing their significance for potential applications.

Abstract:Co9S8 nanoparticles, when incorporated with the Co single atom catalysts, provide a synergistic catalyst for oxygen electroreduction in acid solution. Catalysts composed of both components are stable under operating conditions and have been shown to operate well within a fuel cell environment. A facile yet robust synthesis is reported herein to simultaneously incorporate atomically dispersed Co‐Nx sites with graphitic layer‐protected Co9S8 nanoparticles (denoted as Co SACs+Co9S8) as an efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction in acidic solution. The Co SACs+Co9S8 catalyst shows low H2O2 selectivity (∼5 %) with high half‐wave potential (E1/2) of ∼0.78 VRHE in 0.5 M H2SO4. The atomic sites of the catalyst were quantified by a nitrite stripping method and the corresponding site density of the catalyst is calculated to be 3.2×1018 sites g−1. Besides, we also found the presence of a reasonable amount of Co9S8 nanoparticles is beneficial for the oxygen electrocatalysis. Finally, the catalyst was assembled into a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for evaluating its performance under more practical conditions in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system.

Strengthened d‐p Orbital‐Hybridization of Single Atoms with Sulfur Species Induced Bidirectional Catalysis for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:In this work, electron redistribution of the Co site by introducing an S atom to replace the N atom in the first coordination shell is first theoretically predicted to enhance the anchoring capability of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and simultaneously facilitate the redox progress of Li–S batteries, due to the strengthened d‐p orbital hybridization between sulfur species and SACs. Enlightened by theoretical analysis, asymmetric (N, S) coordinated Co single atoms embedded on N, S‐doped hierarchically porous carbon (S‐Co‐SACs/NSC) is precisely designed. The S@S‐Co‐SACs/NSC cathode for Li–S battery exhibits high areal capacity and cycling stability. This work highlights the important role of the coordination environment of SACs. Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have been widely explored as additives to improve the performance of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries, however, the design of highly catalytic and in‐depth knowledge of the structure–activity relationship of SACs remains a huge challenge. Ultrahigh surface density of Co-N2C single-atom-sites for boosting photocatalytic CO2 reduction to methanol

Abstract:Cobalt species as active sites for photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to valuable products such as methanol have received increasing attention, however, it remains a huge challenge to achieve the high activity. Herein, a pyrolysis-induced-vaporization strategy was successfully employed to fabricate Co/g-C3N4 single-atom catalysts (Co/g-C3N4 SACs) with surface Co atom loading up to 24.6 wt%. Systematic investigation of Co/g-C3N4 SACs formation process disclosed that concentrated-H2SO4 exfoliation of g-C3N4 nanosheets (g-C3N4 NSs) as the substrate followed by a two-step calcination process is essential to achieve ultrahigh metal loading. It was found that the ultrahigh-density of Co single-atom sites were anchored on the g-C3N4 substrate surface and coordinated with two nitrogen and one carbon atoms (Co-N2C). These single dispersed Co-N2C sites on the g-C3N4 surface were found to act not only as electron gathering centers but also as the sites of CO2 adsorption and activation, subsequently, boosting the photocatalytic methanol generation during light irradiation. As a result, the methanol formation rate at 4 h (941.9 μmol g−1) over Co/g-C3N4-0.2 SAC with 24.6 wt% surface Co loading was 13.4 and 2.2 times higher than those of g-C3N4 (17.7 μmol g−1) and aggregated CoOx/g-C3N4-0.2 (423.9 μmol g−1), respectively. Simultaneously, H2 (18.9 μmol g−1 h−1), CO (2.9 μmol g−1 h−1), CH4 (3.4 μmol g−1 h−1), C2H4 (1.1 μmol g−1 h−1), C3H6 (1.4 μmol g−1 h−1), and CH3OCH3 (3.3 μmol g−1 h−1) products were detected over Co/g-C3N4-0.2 SAC. Besides, the photocatalytic activity of the Co/g-C3N4-0.2 SAC for the reduction of CO2 to methanol was stable within 12-cycle experiments (~48 h). This work paves a strategy to boost the photoreduction CO2 activity via loading ultrahigh surface density single atomically dispersed cobalt active sites.

To address this challenge, herein, a Co-CMS composite material is synthesized by confining Co SACs into the highly ordered pores of the carbon molecular sieve (CMS). Related theoretical and experimental methods prove that the microporous trapping and hydroxyl doping of CMS are favorable for synergistically stabilizing the precursor and contributing to the subsequent conversion of single atoms with strong interactions between Co, O, and N. The unique 3D spiral pore structure of CMS facilitates the mass transfer of reactants and the highly dispersed Co single atoms confined in CMS increase the active sites. These properties are ideal for oxygen reduction reaction catalysts. Benefiting from the above-mentioned superiority, the Co-CMS cathode exhibits superior performance in a rechargeable Zn–air battery with a lower charge–discharge voltage gap of 0.77 V and a power density of 219 mW cm−2. The applications of Co-CMS catalysts are also extended to other metal–air batteries in this work, which further highlights the advantages of carbon molecular sieves in stabilizing SACs materials.

Abstract:Two‐dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and single‐atom catalysts (SACs) are promising electrodes for energy conversion/storage because of the layered structure and maximum atom utilization efficiency. However, the integration of such two type materials and the relevant sodium storage applications remain daunting challenges. Here an ingenious diatomite‐templated synthetic strategy is designed to fabricate single‐atom cobalt‐doped MoS2/carbon (SA Co‐MoS2/C) composites toward the high‐performance sodium storage. Benefiting from the unique hierarchical structure, high electron/sodium‐ion conductivity, and abundant active sites, the obtained SA Co‐MoS2/C reveals remarkable specific capacity (∼604.0 mAh g–1 at 0.1 A g–1), high rate performance, and outstanding long cyclic stability. Particularly, the sodium‐ion full cell composed of SA Co‐MoS2/C anode and Na3V2(PO4)3 cathode demonstrates unexpected stability with the cycle number exceeded 1200. The internal sodium storage mechanism is clarified with the aid of density function theory calculations and in situ experimental characterizations. This work not only represents a substantial leap in terms of synthesizing SACs on 2D TMDCs, but also provides a crucial step toward the practical sodium‐ion battery applications. Facile formation of CoN4 active sites onto a SiO2 support to achieve robust CO2 and proton reduction in a noble-metal-free photocatalytic system

Abstract:The conversion of CO2 and protons to solar fuels (CO and H2) is the basis of artificial photosynthesis. To date, most of the reported cobalt-based molecular catalysts or single-atom catalysts (SAC) feature a CoN4 core structure. However, the preparation of these metal complex catalysts or SACs requires either a complicated organic ligand synthesis method or harsh material fabrication conditions. In this study, the facile formation of an active CoN4 structure onto a SiO2 support was achieved via selfcoordination of Co2+ ions with aminated SiO2 nanoparticles. The formation of the CoN4 structure was identified by synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The CoN4-SiO2 catalyst exhibited exceptional bifunctional activity of mediating the CO2-to-CO and 2H+-to-H2 conversions in a photochemical system containing g-C3N4 as a photosensitizer. The system robustly produced syngas (CO + H2, CO/H 2 = 1 : 1-1 : 2) with a high activity (5053 mmol g-1 and 36 mmol g-1 h-1 based on the catalyst) and remarkable stability (durability > 120 h). Mechanistic studies reveal that the Co(I)-species is the active species generated via a photoinduced electron transfer from g-C3N4 to CoN4-SiO2. The dissociation of Co2+ from the aminated SiO2 support and the decomposition of g-C3N4 under irradiation are the main reasons for the inactivation of the system after long-time photocatalysis.

Abstract:Combining the unique structural and optical properties of cobalt sulfide nanocages and the excellent photocatalytic properties of C. I. Pigment Yellow 53, a novel composite photocatalyst (CoS/PY53‐CSx) with a core–shell structure rich in S vacancies is constructed. CoS/PY53‐CSx exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity and effective photocatalytic co‐production of xylonic acid and CO. Photocatalytic biorefinery has been gaining increasing attention as a promising method for utilizing biomass and solar energy, yet it still faces the key challenge of designing stable, efficient, and cost‐effective photocatalysts. In this study, cobalt sulfide/ C. I. Pigment Yellow 53 composite photocatalysts (CoS/PY53‐CSx) with a core–shell structure, which has abundant sulfur (S) vacancies, are developed using a simple hydrothermal method. The CoS nanocage with S vacancies not only offers numerous active sites but also enhances the light‐trapping performance of PY53. Moreover, the internal electric field within the core–shell CoS/PY53‐CSx further enhances charge separation/transfer efficiency while reducing electron transfer resistance, thereby boosting photocatalytic activity. Remarkably, 75.2% of xylonic acid and 22.8 μmol of CO from xylose are obtained using CoS/PY53‐CS0.1 in an air atmosphere. Recycling experiments demonstrate that CoS/PY53‐CS0.1 exhibits excellent recyclability due to the strong bonding force between the core and shell. In addition, electron spin resonance characterization combined with poisoning experiments suggests that h+ and ·O2− serve as the main oxidation active species during this system. This work presents a simple and cost‐effective method for efficient photocatalytic biorefinery.

N, S‐Coordinated Co Single Atomic Catalyst Boosting Adsorption and Conversion of Lithium Polysulfides for Lithium‐Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Sulfiphilic single atomic cobalt with a CoN3S coordinated environment implanted in lithiophilic N, O, and S co‐dopped carbon matrix (SACo@HC) is found to exhibit remarkable catalytic activity to efficiently reduce the activation energy barrier and boost the precipitation and dissolution of Li2S. Boosting reversible solid‐liquid phase transformation from lithium polysulfides to Li2S and suppressing the shuttling of lithium polysulfides from the cathode to the lithium anode are critical challenges in lithium‐sulfur batteries. Here, sulfiphilic single atomic cobalt implanted in lithiophilic heteroatoms‐dopped carbon (SACo@HC) matrix with a CoN3S structure for high‐performance lithium‐sulfur batteries is reported. Density functional theory calculation and in situ experiments demonstrate that the optimal CoN3S structure in SACo@HC can effectively improve the adsorption and redox conversion efficiency of lithium polysulfides. Consequently, the S‐SACo@HC composite with sulfur loading of 80 wt% delivers a high capacity of 1425.1 mAh g−1 at 0.05 C and outstanding rate performance with 745.9 mAh g−1 at 4 C. Furthermore, a capacity of 680.8 mAh g−1 at 0.5 C with a low electrolyte/sulfur ratio (6 μL mg−1) can be achieved even after 300 cycles. With the harsh conditions of lean electrolyte (E/S = 4 μL mg−1) and high sulfur loading (5.4 mg cm−2), a superior area capacity of 5.8 mAh cm−2 can be obtained. This work contributes to building a profound understanding of the adsorption and interface engineering of lithium polysulfides and provides ideas to tackle the long‐standing polysulfide shuttle problem of lithium‐sulfur batteries.

Abstract:Development of high-performance single-atom catalysts (SACs) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has received extensive attention. However, unsatisfactory loading and utilization of metal single-atom sites largely limit the catalytic efficiency. Herein, two dimensional (2D) nanoporous Co single-atom decorated nitrogen-doped carbon catalyst (NP-CoSANC) was prepared by the pyrolysis of urea-adsorbed Co-TPyP MOF precursor. The adsorbed urea was proven to effectively inhibit metal ion agglomeration and create flourishing pore structures simultaneously. Benefit from the high-density CoN4C single-atom sites and porous structure, NP-CoSANC presents superior ORR performance with high E-1/2 of 0.86 V and low Tafel slope of 62.4 mV dec(-1) in 0.1 M KOH solution, surpassing most of advanced transition metal ORR catalysts and even commercial 20% Pt/C. The density functional theory calculations reveal that defect-edge and N-rich doped CoN4C sites in NP-CoSANC endow it with a lower free energy barrier to direct 4e(-) ORR pathway compared to traditional center CoN4C model. As a proof of concept, homemade aqueous primary and flexible quasi-solid-state Zn-air battery exhibit high peak power density as well as charge/discharge stability. This work proposes a facile and effective approach for constructing high-performance SACs electrocatalysts and provides a rational guidance in next-generation energy storage and conversion devices.
