Abstract:In the 1980s, Morocco was vowed to be a leader country of scientific research and output in North Africa. However, the scientific output underwent stagnation and even decline in the mid-2000s relegating Morocco to the last rank of the Maghreb countries. Analysis of the effects of several major governmental decisions taken in the 2000s, shows a clear impact on research activity. The major decisions that have had the most important negative impact are: (1) the use of different scientific languages in schools and universities, (2) abolition of the State Doctorate, (3) the promotion system of professors, (4) the complex bureaucracy of project management, (5) the Voluntary Departure initiative, (6) administrative equivalence of Master and PhD, (7) teaching pressure in universities, (8) ageing of professors and supporting administrative personnel, (9) preference given to expertise over research activity, (10) fled of PhD students.

Abstract:Anthropologists and media analysts have long recognized the Internet and satellite channels as some of the most powerful tools that add tremendous value to the knowledge and experiences of youth. A common interpretation of this idea is that new media technologies have become an important source for information, news updates, cross-cultural communication, socializing, and entertainment. The effects of these tools on young people have predominantly been studied with respect to academic as well as health features. Drawing on data from a survey capturing the digital behaviors of Moroccan students, this article complements previous studies by examining the impact of Internet and satellite channels on the behaviors of Moroccan students. It explores the implicit and denotative consequences of modern media upon the values, behaviors, and lifestyles of young Moroccans. Further, the paper addresses the effects of the massive dissemination of global cultural products on teenagers’ attitudes towards their cultural values. Additionally, the research assumes that inducing behavioral change is overlooked once media outlets start demonizing the uniqueness of local cultures, thus ignite resistance to unconventional values among youth.

Abstract:This article looks at three fundamental issues pertaining to Morocco. Firstly, it discusses the current context of Moroccan education and its challenges. Secondly, as the language of instruction has today become a controversial subject in Morocco, this article aims to provide a critical review of the issue of language of instruction in Moroccan education. Finally, think-tanks and their contribution to shaping national development policies are critically discussed. The writing of this article was based mainly on up-to-date annual and regular reports, especially those published by the World Bank, United Nations, etc. Despite the fact that such efforts are being made to improve the Moroccan educational system, indicators show that Moroccan education is structurally weak, whether at the primary, secondary, or tertiary level. While the state has recently showed its strong support towards bolstering the status of the French language, it was argued that adopting the English language in Moroccan education is urgently needed. The article concludes with discussing that think-tanks and their contribution to shaping the national development policies remain poor in Morocco – this is due to the reluctance of the state to support scientific research, as well as lack of academic environment in Moroccan universities. The significance of this article boils down to the providing a critical review on issues still holding back the pace of development in Morocco, through up-to-date data and certain recommendations, most notably to the improving of such policies regarding the education system, the language of instruction, and the contribution of think-tanks towards national development.

Abstract:Orientation of students in universities is considered a key factor that affects students academic and professional paths. Indeed, many institutional and political discourse highlights the importance of “orientation” at the University as a palliative failure. However, in Morocco, the guidance procedures are based essentially on academic performance alone. This paper will present a literature review on “University guidance” and a qualitative study with 30 students from a public school of civil engineers in Casablanca. This work focuses on exploring various helpful factors which may improve academic guidance.

Abstract:Cultural diplomacy plays a pivotal role in international relations, enabling states to project their soft power and shape their global image. This paper explores the current state of Moroccan cultural diplomacy, highlighting the need to go beyond official approaches and embrace unofficial cultural diplomacy. While extensive research exists on official cultural diplomacy, little attention has been given to the contribution of Moroccan study-abroad students in bolstering their country's cultural diplomacy and soft power. More specifically, this paper argues that Morocco's cultural diplomacy is primarily politically oriented and institutionally based, relying heavily on the monarchy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The strategic utilization of Morocco's cultural and religious heritage and diaspora politics showcases the government's efforts to secure its regional and global influence. However, these initiatives are largely driven by official institutions and lack the involvement of ordinary citizens. By examining the limitations of official cultural diplomacy, this paper argues for the inclusion of Moroccan study-abroad students as unofficial ambassadors in the service of their country’s cultural diplomacy. Drawing inspiration from successful examples of unofficial diplomacy, this paper advocates for the active participation of Moroccan study-abroad students as unofficial cultural ambassadors. Their unique perspectives, connections, and grassroots status can offer valuable contributions that official diplomats may not possess. This research paper contends that Moroccan study-abroad students have many resources of power that qualify them to leverage their country’s cultural diplomacy. These resources are informality and grassroots engagement, volunteering and community service, and the power of the virtual sphere. By utilizing these power resources, these students have the potential to foster cross-cultural understanding, build relationships, and enhance Morocco's soft power. In conclusion, this paper highlights the need for a paradigm shift in Morocco's cultural diplomacy, advocating for a combination of both official and unofficial cultural diplomacies.

Abstract:With the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) has abruptly become the mainstream activity in higher education institutions globally. While, in such turbulent times, this mode of instruction has unarguably imposed itself as a lifeline for education continuity, serious concerns remain about faculty preparedness for this massive shift, especially in educational context where online teaching is still in its embryonic stage. This paper reports on a phenomenographical study examining Moroccan university teachers’ experience with ERT and its impact and implications on their instructional quality and post-pandemic practice. Data were collected, using focus group discussions, from a purposive sample involving 36 university teachers from four higher education institutions. Despite some variance in the respondents’ experiences, the findings clearly indicate that teachers were prematurely immersed in online teaching with very little institutional supportive action. Based on the data, teachers faced various and overwhelming challenges significantly hampering their overall online pedagogical responsiveness. Importantly, teachers’ experience with ERT has not exposed their urgent need for professional development in the area of online delivery, but also triggered major changes in their mindset especially in relation to post-pandemic technological acceptance and use.

Abstract:Considering the influence of globalization and the dominance of English as the de facto language of scientific research, doctoral students in North Africa generally and in Morocco specifically face a certain linguistic discrimination hindering the visibility of their academic contributions. Therefore, they resort to translation from French into English as a survival strategy. Several studies have demonstrated that the advent of Artificial Intelligence-powered translation tools has proven effective in improving the quality of students’ writing performance. The present study seeks to investigate the role of AI-powered translation tools in facilitating the composition of research articles, specifically within the pure sciences disciplines of physics, biology, chemistry, geology, and mathematics. Moreover, this paper aims to identify the AI tools preferred by doctoral students for translating and post-editing their articles. Besides, it sheds light on the perceptions of doctoral students and PhD holders regarding the utility of AI-powered language tools in enhancing the linguistic quality of research articles. The present research is quantitative. It takes the form of an online survey comprising 17 items. Moroccan doctoral students frequently use AI tools to translate from French to English and to enhance the quality of their English to meet academic writing standards. By exploring the effectiveness of AI-powered translation tools in overcoming linguistic barriers, this paper contributes to enhancing the visibility of Moroccan doctoral students' publications in the global scientific community. Finally, the findings can inform English language materials designers in Moroccan higher education to deeply understand the linguistic challenges encountered by doctoral students.

Abstract:Background Clinical learning is an essential component of nursing education. It strongly contributes to the acquisition of students’ clinical skills and enables them to link theory to practice. However, clinical learning is considered a challenging experience for undergraduate nursing students. Objective The study aimed to provide an in-depth understanding of the challenges experienced by undergraduate nursing students during their training in different clinical settings. Methods This study utilized a phenomenological qualitative design with data collected through semi-structured interviews. Thirty-four nursing students from the second and third years were interviewed between March and July 2023. The qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke's six-step model. Results and Discussion The findings of the study revealed that all participants had experienced several challenges during their clinical learning, which had a negative impact on their skill development. As a result, four main themes emerged regarding the challenges associated with clinical learning, including the theory-practice gap, the unsupportive clinical environment, the lack of supervision and support, and the inappropriate scheduling of internships. Ultimately, all participants recognized the need for changes to be made to enhance learning in clinical settings. Conclusion The present study has concluded that Moroccan nursing students face numerous challenges when learning in clinical settings. This study contributes to the existing literature by providing guidelines for Moroccan nursing educators to effectively guide and support their students in clinical areas. Therefore, based on the findings of this study, further discussions regarding potential changes and future research can be conducted.

Abstract:From a qualitative research in the cities of Fez and Meknes, this article analyses young women’s participation in the public sphere in Morocco. Specifically, we have had as reference the changes that have occurred since the so-called Arab Spring of 2011 where youths and feminism played an obvious role. Findings show that nine years after the Arab Spring, there has been no substantial improvements in the lives of Moroccan women in terms of gender equality. However, it is striking that they are very much present in participating in the public sphere from ‘grassroots’ (civic society, trade unions, etc.) levels where they find resources and spaces to get-together, create opportunities and make further progress in the fight for their rights.

Abstract:Background: In the realm of academia, the publication of scientific research is not merely an act of dissemination; it serves as a pivotal milestone that signifies the culmination of rigorous investigation, critical analysis, and intellectual contribution. Aim: To examine the challenges and barriers encountered by faculty members in the process of publishing their work. Methods: The study utilized a descriptive cross-sectional design and was conducted from 1 March to 1 May 2022. A convenience sample of 358 faculty members from eight universities in Egypt, representing a diverse range of faculties. These faculties comprised five practical disciplines, namely, Nursing, Medicine, Science, Pharmacy, and Engineering, as well as three theoretical faculties including Al-Alsun (Languages), Arts, and Commerce. The universities involved in the study included Ain Shams, Cairo, Mansoura, Benha, Assiut, 6th of October, British University in Egypt (BUE), among others. Data were collected through an online questionnaire that included staff characteristics and barriers to scientific research and publishing. Hypothesis testing was conducted using appropriate statistical analysis methods (e.g., Chi-square test) to assess the relationships between faculty members' characteristics and barriers to publishing. Results: The faculty staff in our study reported the highest barriers to publishing scientific research in the domains of the reviewing process (74%), institutional support (67%), and scientific publishing process (60.9%). Conversely, the lowest barriers were found in the domains of frustration after rejection (55.1%), scientific writing barriers (46.1%), and loss of passion and causation of publishing barriers (41.3%). Conclusions: The results highlighted the need for increased support and resources to overcome these barriers and foster a positive culture of research and publishing in Egyptian universities.

Abstract:Myopia is a global public health problem due to its increasing prevalence. Thus, there is growing interest in its early prevention. However, there is a lack of information on the interventions adopted by visual health professionals in Morocco for the management of myopia in children. This study aims to assess their knowledge and raise their awareness of the impact of environmental factors likely to influence the risk of myopia progression. To achieve these objectives, an online survey was distributed to eye care specialists across the country, including a questionnaire assessing their mastery of the different methods available for treating myopia, their level of concern about its development in children, and their opinion on the impact of environmental factors on its onset and growth. The results indicate that most of the professionals consulted are concerned about this pandemic. However, they currently only offer single vision lenses and soft contact lenses, indicating the need for professional training aimed at educating specialists in clinical approaches to myopia management. This would encourage them to adopt alternative solutions for managing myopic children, and to pay particular attention to the environmental factors that influence the onset and progression of myopia.

Abstract:This study aims to uncover university EFL teachers’ perceptions regarding the barriers to implementing critical thinking in higher education. Due to the scarcity of previous studies in the Moroccan context, understanding the challenges that prevent critical thinking from being implemented effectively requires recognizing the difficulties that EFL teachers encounter in the process of its integration. This study was conducted with a qualitative design. Specifically, data were collected using semi-structured interviews with university EFL professors affiliated with different faculties and higher education institutions in Morocco. Interview data was analyzed by deploying thematic analysis. Results indicate that university EFL teachers consider four factors to be the main challenges of implementing critical thinking in higher education. These factors include students, cultural, educational, and class size-related constraints. Furthermore, the interviews’ results provide feasible suggestions to overcome critical thinking barriers in Moroccan higher education.

Abstract:During my thesis, I had the opportunity to work closely with family caregivers of cancer patients. This allowed me to meet these individuals and hear their stories filled with suffering. A large part of their complaints centered on the lack of information and training necessary to properly care for their ill relatives. Often, they find themselves responsible for a patient at home without possessing the required skills, sometimes knowing only the dosage of treatments to administer. This lack of training can lead to serious complications, such as bedsores in immobile patients or urinary infections. This experience underscores the critical need for comprehensive caregiver education in Morocco, a country where family caregivers play a crucial role in oncology care, especially in home-based support. To achieve this, the government, health care professionals, and NGOs must collaborate to develop accessible educational programs that equip caregivers with the necessary skills and knowledge.

Abstract:Morocco hosts a wealth of geological heritage, alongside a rich and varied palaeontological heritage that dates back 1.7 billion years, and archaeological assets that chronicle the biological evolution of the human species and their cultural activities. Research into Morocco's geoheritage has pinpointed several sites and monuments, both nationally and internationally recognised, noted for their unique geological formations and aesthetic appeal. This study aims to offer a comprehensive review of the geoheritage research conducted in Morocco over the last 14 years (2008–2022). This research is sourced from databases including Scopus, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. The documents retrieved have been meticulously reviewed after isolating publications that primarily focus on Moroccan geoheritage sites. The findings indicate a growing trend in the number of studies conducted in this realm over the years. Initially, most research concentrated on the identification and characterisation of Morocco's geoheritage localities. However, with the burgeoning interest in this field, geoscientists have broadened their scope to explore diverse facets of geoheritage site evaluation, encompassing aspects such as geoparks, geotourism, geoeducation, and geoconservation.

Abstract:Abstract Street youth groups ( syg ) in Morocco represent underground urban counterculture where “class conflict” is being fed by lack of opportunities to climb the social ladder. Indefinable and tormenting globalization (Montgomery, 2019; Wacquant, 2009) has psychologically and socially transformed youth into social “victims”/dreamers of a “modern” wellbeing. Social inequalities exacerbated by covid -19 pandemic produced new precarious youths at the margins of “patronaged” neoliberal policies implemented for buying social peace policies. In this context, this paper is based on an ethnographic research with “Tcharmil” Street youth in the neighborhood of Sidi Moussa in Sale, twin city of the Capital Rabat known for urban violence in substandard housing. In this paper, I argue that these “Mcharmlin” youth are resisting marginalization through invading streets and imposing their “subculture” as a “non-movement” (Bayat, 2013) against inequalities. These humans of Sidi Moussa who are young and poor, facing the Atlantic and far from the Capital about 30 minutes behind walled ancient city of Sale of Corsairs, dreaming of a stable life, job and respect from society, living in “Zanqa 0”. Youth refusing nothingness are invading streets which do not have even a name as all streets are numbered from 0 to 14. each narrow street faces the Atlantic either you escape, or you get stuck if you turn your back on the Atlantic.

Abstract:Journal of Palliative Care, Ahead of Print. Morocco's approach to developing palliative care is notably constrained, with an almost complete scarcity of laws and regulations in this area. Despite some progress, palliative care remains fragmented and underdeveloped, with persistent disparities in its accessibility and provision. Nationally, there is a lack of sufficient and detailed information about its progress. This paper aims to fill this gap by offering an overview of the history, infrastructure, education, and legislation framework surrounding palliative care in the country. Significant strides have been made since its implementation, but challenges persist, including the need for a comprehensive legislation framework, more trained professionals, and expanded services beyond oncology to other chronic diseases. Strengthening infrastructure and policies is essential to meet the growing needs of Morocco's population.

Abstract:This research delves into an extensive examination of online professional development programs for educators across Morocco, orchestrated by the Ministry of National Education, Pre-school and Sports, Fez-Meknes Regional Academy in collaboration with the Morocco-Korea Training Center (CMCF) Division Fez-Meknes; Also, a project within associative frameworks. Central to this investigation is the exploration of how online competency assessments within these training modules correlate with the attrition rates among educators, a phenomenon that has gained significant attention. Our goal is to identify strategies to address this challenge, emphasizing the crucial role of ongoing teacher training in enhancing educational quality. Our analysis indicates that online assessments serve a dual purpose: they act as a stimulant for teachers striving to update their skills in response to scientific and technological progress. Conversely, for those whose primary aim is to accumulate certificates for personal advantage, these evaluations might act as a deterrent, diminishing their engagement in the programs.
