Soft Start-up Control Strategies of Bi-Directional Converter with High Voltage Ratio

Abstract:In existing methods for start-up of bi-directional DC-DC converter, an extra start-up circuit is required to limit the surge current, which not only decreases the efficiency but also increases the cost. In this paper, the generation mechanism of the surge current is analyzed, and then two soft start-up control strategies are proposed, i.e. duty cycle control and phase shift control. Accordingly, without an auxiliary start-up circuit, the converter can safely start up with controllable peak current value. Detailed analysis and formula derivation of each scheme in different operation modes are presented. The simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of these two schemes, providing a simple, safe and economic way for soft start-up.
