Abstract:Zn metal has received immense interest as a promising anode of rechargeable aqueous batteries for grid-scale energy storage. Nevertheless, the uncontrollable dendrite growth and surface parasitic reactions greatly retard its practical implementation. Herein, we demonstrate a seamless and multifunctional metal-organic framework (MOF) interphase for building corrosion-free and dendrite-free Zn anodes. The on-site coordinated MOF interphase with 3D open framework structure could function as a highly zincophilic mediator and ion sifter that synergistically induces fast and uniform Zn nucleation/deposition. In addition, the surface corrosion and hydrogen evolution are significantly suppressed by the interface shielding of the seamless interphase. An ultrastable Zn plating/stripping is achieved with elevated Coulombic efficiency of 99.2% over 1000 cycles and prolonged lifetime of 1100 h at 10 mA cm-2 with a high cumulative plated capacity of 5.5 Ah cm-2. Moreover, the modified Zn anode assures the MnO2-based full cells with superior rate and cycling performance.

Abstract:Microbatteries have recently attracted considerable attention due to their small-size and high energy and voltage output. However, the commonly used non-aqueous electrolytes are flammable and sensitive to moisture and oxygen contamination. In this work, an aqueous Zn–MnO2 rechargeable microbattery (micro-ZMB) with good electrochemical performance is developed. By simple laser carving and electrodeposition, in-plane interdigitated current collectors and active materials are obtained. The micro-ZMB exhibits a high specific capacity of 253.8 mA h g−1 (58.4 μA h cm−2) at a current density of 0.5 A g−1 (0.11 mA cm−2), approaching the level of conventional Zn-ion batteries. With proper packaging, a reversible specific capacity of 200 mA h g−1 is achieved even after 150 cycles. Compared with microbatteries reported previously, the as-prepared micro-ZMB exhibits longer cycling stability. Considering the safety of the aqueous electrolyte and stability of the Zn metal anode, the micro-ZMB holds great promise for use in miniaturized electronic devices.

Abstract:Electrolytic batteries with the anode or cathode formed by electro-deposition from the electrolytes show promising potential for simplifying the fabrication process of flexible and micro-size rechargeable batteries. Thin flexible zinc batteries with both anode and cathode electro-deposited simultaneously are demonstrated and investigated here. We find that the acetate anions (Ac-) show excellent electro-depositing efficiency for manganese oxide cathodes, which enable a capacity of 0.26 mAh/cm2 with only carbon current collectors and electrolytes.

Abstract:The rapid development of printed and microscale electronics imminently requires compatible micro-batteries (MBs) with high performance, applicable scalability, and exceptional safety, but faces great challenges from the ever-reported stacked geometry. Herein the first printed planar prototype of aqueous-based, high-safety Zn//MnO2 MBs, with outstanding performance, aesthetic diversity, flexibility and modularization, is demonstrated, based on interdigital patterns of Zn ink as anode and MnO2 ink as cathode, with high-conducting graphene ink as a metal-free current collector, fabricated by an industrially scalable screen-printing technique. The planar separator-free Zn//MnO2 MBs, tested in neutral aqueous electrolyte, deliver a high volumetric capacity of 19.3 mAh/cm3 (corresponding to 393 mAh/g) at 7.5 mA/cm3, and notable volumetric energy density of 17.3 mWh/cm3, outperforming lithium thin-film batteries (≤10 mWh/cm3). Furthermore, our Zn//MnO2 MBs present long-term cyclability having a high capacity retention of 83.9% after 1300 cycles at 5 C, which is superior to stacked Zn//MnO2 batteries previously reported. Also, Zn//MnO2 planar MBs exhibit exceptional flexibility without observable capacity decay under serious deformation, and remarkably serial and parallel integration of constructing bipolar cells with high voltage and capacity output. Therefore, low-cost, environmentally benign Zn//MnO2 MBs with in-plane geometry possess huge potential as high-energy, safe, scalable and flexible microscale power sources for direction integration with printed electronics.

Abstract:As intelligent microsystems develop, many revolutionary applications, such as the swallowing surgeon proposed by Richard Feynman, are about to evolve. Nonetheless, integrable energy storage satisfying the demand for autonomous operations has emerged as a major obstacle to the deployment of intelligent microsystems. A reason for the lagging development of integrable batteries is the challenge of miniaturization through microfabrication procedures. Lithium batteries, generated by the most successful battery chemistry, are not stable in the air, thus creating major manufacturing challenges. Other cations (Na+ , Mg2+ , Al3+ , K+ ) are still in the early stages of development. In contrast, the superior stability of zinc batteries in the air brings high compatibility to microfabrication protocols and has already demonstrated excellent practicability in full-sized devices. To obtain energy-dense and high-power zinc microbatteries within square-millimeter or smaller footprints, sandwich, pillar, and Swiss-roll configurations are developed. Thin interdigital and fiber microbatteries find their applications being integrated into wearable devices and electronic skin. It is foreseeable that zinc microbatteries will find their way into highly integrated microsystems unlocking their full potential for autonomous operation. This review summarizes the material development, configuration innovation, and application-oriented integration of zinc microbatteries.
Interface Engineering of Aqueous Zinc/Manganese Dioxide Batteries with High Areal Capacity and Energy Density

Abstract:Commercialization of aqueous batteries is mainly hampered by their low energy density, owing to the low mass loading of active cathode materials. In this work, a MnO2 cathode structure (MnO2 /CTF) is designed to modify the MnO2 /collector interface for enhanced ion transportation properties. Such a cathode can achieve ultrahigh mass loading of MnO2 , large areal capacity, and high energy density, with excellent cycling stability and rate performance. Specifically, a 0.15 mm thick MnO2 /CTF cathode can realize a mass loading of 20 mg cm-2 with almost 100% electrochemical conversion of MnO2 , providing the maximum areal capacity of 12.08 mA h cm-2 and energy density of 191 W h kg-1 for Zn-MnO2 /CTF batteries when considering both cathode and anode. Besides the conventional low energy demonstrations, such a Zn-MnO2 /CTF battery is capable of realistic applications, such as mobile phones in our daily life, which is a promising alternative for wearable electronics.

Abstract:Following the fast growth of micro-energy storage devices, there is an urgent need to develop miniaturized electronic devices with excellent performance that are both green and safe. Planar interdigitated rechargeable Zn microbatteries (MBs) have gained widespread attention in recent years due to their ease of series-parallel integration, mechanical flexibility and no need of traditional separators. We prepared a patterned cathode of NiCo layered double hydroxide (LDH)@indium tin oxide (ITO) nanowires (NWs) @carbon cloth (CC) by the chemical vapor deposition of ITO NWs on the carbon fibers of CC, laser patterning, and finally the electrodeposition of NiCo-LDH to coat the ITO NW@CC. The cathode was combined with a patterned Zn foil anode to form a planar MB. Because of the highly conductive ITO NWs@CC current collector, the interdigitated MB had a satisfactory performance with a high specific capacity of 453.5 mAh g−1 (corresponding to 0.56 mAh cm−2) in an alkaline water-based electrolyte at 1 mA cm−2. After 4 000 cycles the capacity increased to 216% of the initial value due to gradual penetration of electrolyte into the three-dimensional NiCo-LDH@ITO NW@CC network. It also had excellent energy (798.4 μWh cm−2, corresponding to 649.9 Wh kg−1) and power density (4.1 mW cm−2, corresponding to 3 282.7 mW kg−1). Furthermore, MBs connected in series-parallel in lighting tests illustrate the excellent performance of the device. Therefore, this fast and simple fabrication of Zn MBs with an in-plane interdigital structure provides a reference for next-generation high-performance, environmentally-friendly, and scalable planar micro-energy storage systems.

Abstract:Explosive progress in wireless and functional mobile electronics calls for miniaturized energy-storage units to push forward energy-autonomous and self-sustainable intelligent microsystems. Emerging three-dimensional (3D) microstructured electrodes for energy-storage devices have drawn great attention due to their attractive stereoscopic architectures to increase the areal loading of active materials. Here, we report a strategy for fabricating a 3D helical electrode for a zinc microbattery (Zn MB) by combining a “top-down” lithography technique and a “bottom-up” electrochemical depositing process. Thanks to the available stereoscopic space, the achieved 3D helical electrode shows a high surface area, outstanding electrolyte permeation, and stress adaptive capability. Based on the structural advantages of a 3D helical electrode, high-performance rechargeable Zn MB has been achieved by depositing Zn and NiOOH as anode and cathode materials, respectively. The Zn microbattery demonstrates a specific areal capacity up to 0.325 mAh·cm–2 corresponding to a high energy density of 0.55 mWh·cm–2. It also exhibits remarkable rate capability (0.272 mAh·cm–2 at 100 mA·cm–2) and excellent cycling stability (85% retention after 1000 cycles). The outstanding electrochemical performance indicates that the 3D Zn MB can work as a promising power source for advanced electronic devices. Paired micro-/nanofabrication process for battery electrodes is also of great significance in gearing toward carbon-neutral.

Abstract:Batteries powering next‐generation flexible and wearable electronic devices require superior mechanical bendability and foldability. Herein, a self‐standing hybrid nanoarchitecture constructed by ultralong MnO2 nanowires and graphene nanosheets as an advanced and lightweight cathodes for flexible and foldable zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs) is designed and fabricated. The new‐designed batteries exhibit not only a high energy density of 436 Wh kg−1 based on the total cathode mass but also good 2000‐cycling durability. More importantly, the shape‐deformable ZIBs can be operated without any capacity loss under both bent and folded circumstances. The foldable ZIBs with high energy density and long lifetime hold great promise for smart and wearable electronics.
High-performing Rechargeable/flexible Zinc-Air Batteries by Coordinated Hierarchical Bi-metallic Electrocatalyst and Heterostructure Anion Exchange Membrane

Abstract:Due to the lack of highly efficient and low-cost oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction (ORR/ OER) catalyst and alkaline anion exchange membrane (AEM), advanced rechargeable zinc-air batteries are largely hindered in many applications from wearable electronics to electric vehicles. Herein, a hybrid of porous Co3O4 anchoring on MnO2, then interpenetrating with CNTs (Co3O4/MnO2-CNTs) is synthesized via facile hydrothermal process, and an AEM (CS/EMImC-Co-EP/GO) employing semi-interpenetrating network structure is fabricated with a simple solution-casting method. The porous nanoparticles and chrysalis-like hybrid as well as strong bi-metallic coupling effect build highways and buffer zones for reactant and electrons transfer for ORR/ OER. In addition, due to the competition of bottom Co atoms, the density functional theory (DFT) proves that the neighbor Mn sites (Mn1 and Mn2) of the MnO2(110) surface are evidently activated, which prompts the catalytic activity of hybrids by making the Mn1, Mn2 3d density of states move forward lower energy entirely. As a result, Co3O4/MnO2-CNTs exhibit superior ORR/OER activities with the low potential difference (Delta E) of 0.85 V and impressive performances in rechargeable aqueous zinc-air batteries (power density: 534 mW cm(-2)). Moreover, combining AEM integrated into rechargeable flexible all-solid-state zinc-air batteries and stack, the enhancement natures of wearable devices are achieved even under different bending angles benefiting from high hydroxyl anion conductivity and remarkable flexibility of AEM semi-interpenetrating network, which accelerates ion transport by the synergy of hopping and vehicle mechanisms. Furthermore, the flexible all-solid-state zinc-air batteries show excellent tolerance toxicity of CO2.

Abstract:With the increased development of wearable electronics, flexible zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) have attracted widespread attention owing to their low cost, superior safety, and simple fabrication process. Nevertheless, the limited active mass loading and low specific capacity remain challenges to be overcome. Herein, an effective in situ growth strategy is used to boost the mass loading and specific capacity of flexible ZIBs. We employed a mussel-derived polydopamine layer as an inductive catalyst to prompt the growth of flower-like delta-MnO2 on carbon cloth, which demonstrated strong adhesion to the surface, high mass loading, and excellent flexibility. In addition, the formed 3D conductive and supporting networks contribute to the realization of superior long cycle life, as well as a high specific capacity. As a result, the as-obtained flexible cathode can achieve a high initial discharge capacity of 1.3 mA h cm(-2) at a current density of 1 mA cm(-2) and a reversible capacity of 0.25 mA h cm(-2) at 10 mA cm(-2) for 10 000 cycles. Moreover, its reaction mechanism in ZIBs was analyzed via a series of ex situ characterization techniques, and the results suggest that the charge-discharge behavior is determined based on the Zn2+ (de-)intercalation in the delta-MnO2 interlayer. Remarkably, the as-developed flexible cathode is assembled into a flexible quasi-solid-state device, which shows excellent flexibility and can easily power one LED-based device, which has significant application prospects in wearable electronics. This work provides a novel tactic for the design of flexible batteries with high active mass loading and excellent electrochemical performance via employing polydopamine as an inductive catalyst.

Abstract:The imperative development of high-performance planar micro-batteries featuring high-capacity electrodes and environmentally safer, cost-effective systems is crucial for powering forthcoming smart, miniaturized portable electronic devices. In alignment with this necessity, this study centers on achieving high-capacity cathode materials. This involves the pre-intercalation of polyaniline and water into V 2 O 5 nanowires to enhance capacity, applied in conjunction with Zn anodes within a planar device structure to boost charge storage performance. The presented straightforward strategy is demonstrated to not only effectively increase charge storage capacities from 235 mAh/g to 384 mAh/g at 200 mA/g but also reduce the pre-activation process. Consequently, the Zn-ion micro-batteries obtained, featuring high-capacity cathodes, not only provide a substantial areal capacity of 409 μAh/cm 2 but also exhibit notable peak areal energy density and power density at 306.7 μWh/cm 2 and 3.44 mW/cm 2 , respectively. Additionally, the micro-battery demonstrates a slow self-discharge voltage response, with approximately 80 % retention even after 200 h. This work proposes an effective strategy to enhance the electrochemical performance of planar micro-batteries, a critical advancement for the development of advanced portable electronics.

Abstract:Advanced aqueous batteries with abundant global reserves, large discharge capacity and long life span are crucial research objectives. Herein, a kind of aqueous Zn-ion battery was fabricated with ultra-thin Ni-Mn nanosheet electrode and zinc foil. A simple H2-annealing process was employed to handle the NiMnxOy nanosheets to form oxygen vacancy. Based on the formation of fast ion diffusion channels and the increase of active sites, the fabricated H-NiMnxOy nanosheet electrode displays an areal capacity of 0.68 mA h cm-2 at a current density of 2 mA cm-2 and an excellent cycling performance (almost no reduction after 6000 cycles). The fabricated H-NiMnxOy//Zn battery obtains a high areal capacity, up to 0.66 mA h cm-2 at a current density of 4 mA cm-2, and shows a long cycling stability (88.5% capacity retention after 5500 cycles). In particular, it has a high energy density, up to 1.13 mW cm-2 at a power density of 3.34 mW cm-2, more than many other similar devices. Thus, this research provides a new idea for the wide application of aqueous Zn-ion battery in intelligent equipment and electric vehicles.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc (Zn)-ion batteries are regarded as promising candidates for large-scale energy storage systems because of their high safety, low cost, and environmental benignity. However, the dendrite issue of Zn anode hinders their practical application. Herein, a freestanding, lightweight, and zincophilic MXene/nanoporous oxide heterostructure engineered separator is designed to stabilize a Zn metal anode. The nanoporous oxides prepared by a one-step vacuum distillation technique afford the advantages of large surface area, high porosity, and homogeneous porous structure. The zincophilic MXene@oxides layer can homogenize the electric field distribution, facilitate ion diffusion kinetics, reduce local current density, and promote even Zn ionic flux, which will regulate uniform Zn deposition and suppress side reactions. Accordingly, dendrite-free Zn anodes with stable cyclability are achieved for over 500 h at an ultrahigh area capacity of 10 mAh cm-2. Besides, flexible, long-lifespan, and high-rate N/S-doped three-dimensional MXene@MnO2||Zn full cells are constructed with the engineered separator. Moreover, this strategy can be successfully extended to lithium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium metal batteries, indicating that separator regulation is a universal approach to overcome the challenges of metal batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous Zn-MnO2 batteries using mild electrolyte show great potential in large-scale energy storage (LSES) application, due to high safety and low cost. However, structure collapse of manganese oxides upon cycling caused by the conversion mechanism (e.g., from tunnel to layer structures for α-, β-, and γ-phases) is one of the most urgent issues plaguing its practical applications. Herein, to avoid the phase conversion issue and enhance battery performance, a structurally robust novel phase of manganese oxide MnO2 H0.16 (H2 O)0.27 (MON) nanosheet with thickness of ≈2.5 nm is designed and synthesized as a promising cathode material, in which a nanosheet structure combined with a novel H+ /Zn2+ synergistic intercalation mechanism is demonstrated and evidenced. Accordingly, a high-performance Zn/MON cell is achieved, showing a high energy density of ≈228.5 Wh kg-1 , impressive cyclability with capacity retention of 96% at 0.5 C after 300 cycles, as well as exhibiting rate performance of 115.1 mAh g-1 at current rate of 10 C. To the best current knowledge, this H+ /Zn2+ synergistic intercalation mechanism is first reported in an aqueous battery system, which opens a new opportunity for development of high-performance aqueous Zn ion batteries for LSES.
