Abstract:We study the asymptotic properties of monic orthogonal polynomials (OPs) with respect to some Freud weights when the degree of the polynomial tends to infinity, including the asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients, the nontrivial leading coefficients of the monic OPs, the associated Hankel determinants and the squares of $L^2$-norm of the monic OPs. These results are derived from the combination of the ladder operator approach, Dyson's Coulomb fluid approach and some recent results in the literature.

Abstract:Let μ0\mu _0 and μ1\mu _1 be measures supported on an unbounded interval and Sn,λnS_{n,\lambda _n} the extremal varying Sobolev polynomial which minimizes ⟨P,P⟩λn=∫P2dμ0+λn∫P′2dμ1,λn>0,\begin{equation*} \langle P, P \rangle _{\lambda _n}=\int P^2 \, d\mu _0 + \lambda _n \int P’^2 \, d\mu _1, \quad \lambda _n >0, \end{equation*} in the class of all monic polynomials of degree nn. The goal of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, we discuss how to balance both terms of this inner product, that is, how to choose a sequence (λn)(\lambda _n) such that both measures μ0\mu _0 and μ1\mu _1 play a role in the asymptotics of (Sn,λn).\left (S_{n, \lambda _n} \right ). On the other hand, we apply such ideas to the case when both μ0\mu _0 and μ1\mu _1 are Freud weights. Asymptotics for the corresponding Sn,λnS_{n, \lambda _n} are computed, illustrating the accuracy of the choice of λn.\lambda _n\, .

Discrete Painlevé equations for recurrence coefficients of orthogonal polynomials

Abstract:We give four examples of families of orthogonal polynomials for which the coefficients in the recurrence relation satisfy a discrete Painlevé equation. The first example deals with Freud weights $|x|^\rho \exp(-|x|^m)$ on the real line, and we repeat Freud's derivation and analysis for the cases $m=2,4,6$. The Freud equations for the recurrence coefficients when $m=4$ corresponds to the discrete Painlevé I equation. The second example deals with orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle for the weight $\exp(\lambda \cos \theta)$. These orthogonal polynomials are important in the theory of random unitary matrices. Periwal and Shevitz have shown that the recurrence coefficients satisfy the discrete Painlevé II equation. The third example deals with discrete orthogonal polynomials on the positive integers. We show that the recurrence coefficients of generalized Charlier polynomials can be obtained from a solution of the discrete Painlevé II equation. The fourth example deals with orthogonal polynomials on $\pm q^n$. We consider the discrete $q$-Hermite I polynomials and some discrete $q$-Freud polynomials for which the recurrence ceofficients satisfy a $q$-deformation of discrete Painlevé I.

Asymptotics of Polynomials Orthogonal With Respect to a Generalized Freud Weight With Application to Special Function Solutions of Painlevé-IV

Abstract:We obtain asymptotics of polynomials satisfying the orthogonality relations $$ \int_{\mathbb{R}} z^k P_n(z; t , N) \mathrm{e}^{-N \left(\frac{1}{4}z^4 + \frac{t}{2}z^2 \right)} \mathrm{d} z = 0 \quad \text{ for } \quad k = 0, 1, ..., n-1, $$ where the complex parameter $t$ is in the so-called two-cut region. As an application, we deduce asymptotic formulas for certain families of solutions of Painlevé-IV which are indexed by a non-negative integer and can be written in terms of parabolic cylinder functions. The proofs are based on the characterization of orthogonal polynomials in terms of a Riemann-Hilbert problem and the Deift-Zhou non-linear steepest descent method.

Abstract:The discrete orthogonality relations hold for all the orthogonal polynomials obeying three term recurrence relations. We show that they also hold for multi-indexed Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials, which are new orthogonal polynomials obtained by deforming these classical orthogonal polynomials. The discrete orthogonality relations could be considered as more encompassing characterisation of orthogonal polynomials than the three term recurrence relations. As the multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials start at a positive degree $\ell_{\mathcal D}\ge1$, the three term recurrence relations are broken. The extra $\ell_{\mathcal D}$ `lower degree polynomials', which are necessary for the discrete orthogonality relations, are identified. The corresponding Christoffel numbers are determined. The main results are obtained by the blow-up analysis of the second order differential operators governing the multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials around the zeros of these polynomials at a degree $\ell_{\mathcal D}+\mathcal{N}$. %changed The discrete orthogonality relations are shown to hold for another group of `new' orthogonal polynomials called Krein-Adler polynomials based on the Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials.

Abstract:We study the sequence of polynomials $\{S_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ that are orthogonal with respect to the general discrete Sobolev-type inner product $$ \langle f,g \rangle_{\mathsf{s}}=\!\int\! f(x) g(x)d\mu(x)+\sum_{j=1}^{N}\sum_{k=0}^{d_j}\lambda_{j,k} f^{(k)}(c_j)g^{(k)}(c_j), $$ where $\mu$ is a finite Borel measure whose support $\supp{\mu}$ is an infinite set of the real line, $\lambda_{j,k}\geq 0$, and the mass points $c_i$, $i=1,\dots,N$ are real values outside the interior of the convex hull of $\supp{\mu}$ ($c_i\in\RR\setminus\inter{\ch{\supp{\mu}}}$). Under some restriction of order in the discrete part of $\langle \cdot, \cdot \rangle_{\mathsf{s}}$, we prove that $S_n$ has at least $n-d^*$ zeros on $\inter{\ch{\supp{\mu}}}$, being $d^*$ the number of terms in the discrete part of $\langle \cdot, \cdot \rangle_{\mathsf{s}}$. Finally, we obtain the outer relative asymptotic for $\{S_n\}$ in the case that the measure $\mu$ is the classical Laguerre measure, and for each mass point, only one order derivative appears in the discrete part of $\langle \cdot, \cdot \rangle_{\mathsf{s}}$.

Abstract:We consider the semi-classical generalized Freud weight function \[w_{\lambda}(x;t) = |x|^{2\lambda+1}\exp(-x^4 +tx^2),\qquad x\in\mathbb{R},\] with $ \lambda>-1$ and $t\in\mathbb{R}$ parameters. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of the sequences of monic polynomials that are orthogonal with respect to $w_{\lambda}(x;t)$, as well as the asymptotic behavior of the recurrence coefficient, when the degree, or alternatively, the parameter $t$, tend to infinity. We also investigate existence and uniqueness of positive solutions of the nonlinear difference equation satisfied by the recurrence coefficients and prove properties of the zeros of the generalized Freud polynomials.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the sequence of monic q-Hermite I-Sobolev type orthogonal polynomials of higher-order, denoted as $\{\mathbb{H}_{n}(x;q)\}_{n\geq 0}$, which are orthogonal with respect to the following non-standard inner product involving q-differences: \begin{equation*} \langle p,q\rangle_{\lambda }=\int_{-1}^{1}f\left( x\right) g\left(x\right) (qx,-qx;q)_{\infty }d_{q}(x)+\lambda \,(\mathscr{D}_{q}^{j}f)(\alpha)(\mathscr{D}_{q}^{j}g)(\alpha), \end{equation*} where $\alpha \in \mathbb{R}\backslash (-1,1)$, $\lambda $ belongs to the set of positive real numbers, $\mathscr{D}_{q}^{j}$ denotes the $j$-th $q $-discrete analogue of the derivative operator, and $(qx,-qx;q)_{\infty}d_{q}(x)$ denotes the orthogonality weight with its points of increase in a geometric progression. We proceed to obtain the hypergeometric representation of $\mathbb{H}_{n}(x;q)$ and explicit expressions for the corresponding ladder operators. From the latter, we obtain a novel kind of three-term recurrence formula with rational coefficients associated with these polynomial family. Moreover, for certain real values of $\alpha $, we present some results concerning the location of the zeros of $\mathbb{H}_n(x;q)$ and we perform a comprehensive analysis of their asymptotic behavior as the parameter $\lambda$ varies from zero to infinity.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive class of Sobolev bi-orthogonal polynomial sequences, which emerge from a moment matrix with an LU factorization. These sequences are associated with a measure matrix defining the Sobolev bilinear form. Additionally, we develop a theory of deformations for Sobolev bilinear forms, focusing on polynomial deformations of the measure matrix. Notably, we introduce the concepts of Christoffel–Sobolev and Geronimus–Sobolev transformations. The connection formulas between these newly introduced polynomial sequences and existing ones are explicitly determined.

Sobolev interpolation inequalities with optimal Hardy-Rellich inequalities and critical exponents

Abstract:We establish a new family of the critical higher order Sobolev interpolation inequalities for radial functions as well as for non-radial functions. These Sobolev interpolation inequalities are sharp in the sense that they use the optimal quadratic forms of the sharp Hardy-Rellich inequalities and cover the Sobolev critical exponents. Our results extend those studied by Dietze and Nam in [15] for the first order derivative case to higher order setting. The well-known Pólya-Szegö symmetrization principle and the nonlinear ground state representation play an important role in the work of [15]. To overcome the absence of the Pólya-Szegö principle and the nonlinear ground state representation in the higher order case, our proofs rely on the Fourier analysis and a higher order verion of the Talenti comparison principle. We also study a new version of the critical Hardy-Sobolev interpolation inequality involving the critical quadratic form of the Hardy inequality and Lorentz norms. Our critical Hardy-Sobolev interpolation inequality complements the result of Dietze and Nam in [15].

Abstract:Let {p(n) (x)}(n greater than or equal to 0) be the set of orthonormal polynomials with respect to the exponential weight w (x) = e(-v(x)), where v (x) = x(2m) + ... is a monic polynomial of degree 2 m with m greater than or equal to 2 and is even. An asymptotic approximation is obtained for p(n)(x), as n --> infinity, which holds uniformly for 0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to O(n(1/2m)). As a corollary, a three-term asymptotic expansion is also derived for the zeros of these polynomials.
Orthogonality of a new family of $q$-Sobolev type polynomials

Abstract:In this work, we introduce and construct specific $q$-polynomials that are desired from the well-established families of $q$-orthogonal polynomials, namely little $q$-Jacobi polynomials and $q$-Laguerre polynomials, respectively. We examine these newly constructed $q$-polynomials and observe that they possess integral representations of little $q$-Jacobi polynomials and $q$-Laguerre polynomials. These polynomials solve a third-order $q$-difference equation and display an unconventional four-term recurrence relation. This unique recurrence relation makes us categorize them as $q$-Sobolev-type orthogonal polynomials. This motivation leads to defining the general Sobolev-type orthogonality for $q$-polynomials. Special cases of these polynomials are also explored and discussed. Furthermore, we delve into the behavior of these $q$-orthogonal polynomials of Sobolev type as the parameters approach $1$. We also examine their zeros and interlacing properties.

Here, we give an explicit and concise expression of the differential system in terms of the recursion coefficients. Abstract:In this paper we consider an appropriate ordering of the Laurent monomials $x^{i}y^{j}$, $i,j \in \mathbb{Z}$ that allows us to study sequences of orthogonal Laurent polynomials of the real variables $x$ and $y$ with respect to a positive Borel measure $\mu$ defined on $\mathbb{R}^2$ such that $\{ x=0 \}\cup \{ y=0 \} \not\in \textrm{supp}(\mu)$. This ordering is suitable for considering the {\em multiplication plus inverse multiplication operator} on each varibale $\left( x+\frac{1}{x}\right.$ and $\left. y+\frac{1}{y}\right)$, and as a result we obtain five-term recurrence relations, Christoffel-Darboux and confluent formulas for the reproducing kernel and a related Favard's theorem. A connection with the one variable case is also presented, along with some applications for future research.

Abstract:We consider multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with the exponential cubic weight e−x3 over two contours in the complex plane. We study the basic properties of these polynomials, including the Rodrigues formula and nearest-neighbor recurrence relations. It turns out that the recurrence coefficients are related to a discrete Painlevé equation. The asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients, the ratio of the diagonal multiple orthogonal polynomials and the (scaled) zeros of these polynomials are also investigated.
