Abstract:We report a noble-metal-free photocatalyst, ultrathin TiO2 with atomic layer thickness, which is a potential catalyst for CO2 photoreduction. Abstract:Photocatalytic organic synthesis has attracted much attention in recent years. Herein, a N and C co-decorated mesoporous TiO2 (mp-NCT) photocatalyst was synthesized for selective oxidation of alcohols. Notably, the asprepared mp-NCT composites possess large specific surface areas and mesoporous structures, which could provide sufficient active sites and improve mass transfer. Furthermore, the co-doping of N and C species could not only extend the light absorption, but also tune the valence band of TiO2. Meanwhile, numerous oxygen vacancies and intra-band could be introduced, which helps to reduce the combination of the photogenerated carriers. As a result, the mp-NCT composites show excellent photocatalytic performance towards selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol and its derivatives to corresponding aldehydes under simulated sunlight irradiation. Mechanism studies revealed that the photogenerated electrons, holes and high dynamic equilibrium concentration of O2 center dot- radicals were responsible for the efficient conversion of alcohols to aldehydes.

Abstract:Ti3C2Tx (T = OH) was first prepared from Ti3AlC2 by HF etching and applied into a photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Then, the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets present interbedded a self-supporting structure and extended interlayer spacing. Meanwhile, the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets are decorated with abundant oxygen-containing functional groups in the process of etching, which not only serve as active sites but also show efficient charge migration and separation. Among Ti3C2Tx materials prepared by etching for different times, Ti3C2Tx-36 (Etching time: 36 h) showed the best performance for photoreduction of CO2 into alcohols (methanol and ethanol), giving total yield of 61 μmol g catal.−1, which is 2.8 times than that of Ti3AlC2. Moreover, excellent cycling stability for CO2 reduction is beneficial from the stable morphology and crystalline structure. This work provided novel sights into constructing surface active sites controllably.

Abstract:Abstract Photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction is a sustainable and energy-consumption-free route to directly convert the greenhouse gas into chemicals. Given the vast amount of greenhouse gases, numerous efforts have been devoted to developing inorganic photocatalysts due to their stable, low-cost and environmental-friendly properties. However, more efficient titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) without noble metal or sacrifice/organic agent is highly desirable for CO 2 reduction practical application, and it is also difficult and urgently in demand for TiO 2 producing selectively valuable compounds, i.e. industrial chemicals and fuels. Here, we develop a novel “adatom at step” strategy via anchoring single tungsten atom oxide (STAO) site on intrinsic steps of classic TiO 2 nanoparticles. The composition of single-sites can be controlled by tuning the ratio of adatom W 5+ to neighboring Ti 3+ , resulting in significant CO 2 reduction efficiency and selectively yield of carbon monoxide (CO) or methane (CH 4 ) as main products. The W 5+ -dominated catalysts can achieve an ultrahigh photocatalytic CH 4 production of 59.3 μmol/g/h, while the Ti 3+ -dominated catalysts can achieve a CO production of 181.4 μmol/g/h, which both exceed those of pristine TiO 2 by more than one order of magnitude. The mechanism relies on the accurate control of atomic sites with high coverage and the subsequent excellent electron-hole separation along with favorable adsorption-desorption of intermediates on sites. This approach not only provides a novel strategy for inorganic catalytic single-sites with superior performance, but also identifies the rational design mechanisms of the efficient site with controllable production.

This paper briefly reviews TiO2 catalytic materials studied for photocatalytic reduction of CO2, including pure TiO2, supported TiO2, metal-modified TiO2 compound semiconductor TiO2, and organic photosensitized TiO2 catalysts. In addition, the photocatalytic activities of the catalysts are discussed.

Abstract:Solar-induced photothermal catalysis of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising method for chemical CO2 conversion. Modification of the metal oxide catalyst surface, including the introduction of oxygen vacancies and the doping and loading of metal or metal oxides, has a considerable influence on the product selectivity of the CO2RR. The complete free energy profiles of the CO2RR pathway on modified anatase TiO2 (101) surfaces are calculated based on density functional theory. The modified surfaces enhance the adsorption of CO2, and competition between desorption and reduction of the key intermediates (CO*, HCOOH*, HCHO*, and CH3OH*) is crucial to the selectivity for the CO2RR to form C1 products. The loading of Au and the doping of MgO enhance the electron transfer between the key intermediates and the surface, as well as the internal electron transfer inside the key intermediates, which efficiently activates the key intermediates and significantly increases the CH4 selectivity of the CO2RR.
Self-assembly of a Highly Stable and Active Co3O4/H-TiO2 Bulk Heterojunction with High-Energy Interfacial Structures for Low Temperature CO Catalytic Oxidation

Abstract:Development of transition metal oxide catalysts with a tunable structure is extremely important for energy, chemical and environmental processes. Herein, we report a new strategy for the synthesis of a highly stable and active Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction with high-energy interfacial structures through two-step hydrothermal-crystallization for efficient low-temperature CO catalytic oxidation. By selectively etching, an anatase TiO2 support exposing the high-index (112) facet was first created. The high-index (112) facet with high surface energy can endow the bulk TiO2 support with unique physical and chemical properties so as to act as a foundation to construct a robust high-energy interfacial bulk heterojunction. Because of the presence of Ti–O–Co species at the high-energy interface, the prepared Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction possessed much more catalytic active sites compared to Co3O4 nanoparticles supported on conventional TiO2 supports and exhibited a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 3.56 × 10−3 s−1 at 120 °C, which was very competitive compared to those of reported cobalt-based catalysts and 1000 times higher than that of commercial Co3O4. Importantly, due to the strong interactions between Co3O4 and the TiO2 bulk support exposed high-index facet, more attractive water-resisting properties for low temperature CO oxidation can be achieved in the presence of steam (∼2%) compared to previously reported catalysts. The results show promising opportunities for tailoring catalytic behaviors beyond a facile and rational design with a controllable metal–support interface.

Abstract:Single‐atom Pt anchored on 3D TiO2‐Ti3C2 is synthesized through an in situ transformation and photoreduction method. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the atomic interface engineering of single‐atom Pt and interfacial TiOTi, the optimized photocatalyst exhibits excellent CO2‐to‐CO conversion activity of 20.5 μmol g–1 h–1 with a selectivity of 96%, which is five times that of commercial TiO2 (P25). Solar‐driven CO2 conversion into valuable fuels is a promising strategy to alleviate the energy and environmental issues. However, inefficient charge separation and transfer greatly limits the photocatalytic CO2 reduction efficiency. Herein, single‐atom Pt anchored on 3D hierarchical TiO2‐Ti3C2 with atomic‐scale interface engineering is successfully synthesized through an in situ transformation and photoreduction method. The in situ growth of TiO2 on Ti3C2 nanosheets can not only provide interfacial driving force for the charge transport, but also create an atomic‐level charge transfer channel for directional electron migration. Moreover, the single‐atom Pt anchored on TiO2 or Ti3C2 can effectively capture the photogenerated electrons through the atomic interfacial PtO bond with shortened charge migration distance, and simultaneously serve as active sites for CO2 adsorption and activation. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the atomic interface engineering of single‐atom Pt and interfacial TiOTi, the optimized photocatalyst exhibits excellent CO2‐to‐CO conversion activity of 20.5 μmol g−1 h−1 with a selectivity of 96%, which is five times that of commercial TiO2 (P25). This work sheds new light on designing ideal atomic‐scale interface and single‐atom catalysts for efficient solar fuel conversation.

Abstract:Surface modification of TiO2 with NaOH promoted the chemisorption, activation and photocatalytic CO2 reduction. An optimized loading amount of NaOH kept a good balance between CO2 chemisorption quantity and BET surface area of TiO2. Abstract:Arduous CO2 activation and sluggish charge transfer retard the photoreduction of CO2 to CH3OH with high efficiency and selectivity. Here, we fabricate ultrathin Ti-doped WO3 nanosheets possessing approving active sites and optimized carrier dynamics as a promising catalyst. Quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and synchrotron-radiation X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy firmly confirm that the true active sites for CO2 reduction are the W sites rather the Ti sites, while the Ti dopants can facilitate charge transfer, which accelerates the generation of crucial COOH* intermediates as revealed by in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Besides, the Gibbs free energy calculations also validate that Ti doping can lower the energy barrier of CO2 activation and CH3OH desorption by 0.22 eV and 0.42 eV, respectively, thus promoting the formation of CH3OH. In consequence, the Ti-doped WO3 ultrathin nanosheets show a superior CH3OH selectivity of 88.9% and reach a CH3OH evolution rate of 16.8 μmol g-1 h-1, about 3.3 times higher than that on WO3 nanosheets. This work sheds light on promoting CO2 photoreduction to CH3OH by rational elemental doping.
Reduced {001}-Tio2-x Photocatalysts: Noble-Metal-Free Co2 Photoreduction for Selective Ch4 Evolution

Abstract:The preparation of reduced TiO2 photocatalysts with high Ti3+ concentration is a great challenge due to their instability in air. Here we report a new approach for the synthesis of reduced TiO2 with {001} facets exposed via a hydrothermal process. By the introduction of fluoride atoms, {001} and {101} facets are formed, which act as hole and electron collectors, respectively, for charge separation. By adjusting the volume of HF added, a rutile-anatase transition is observed for the first time. EPR spectra confirm the generation of Ti3+ species in the bulk of TiO2, and Ti3+ signals are studied in the anatase and rutile phases separately. The quantified EPR shows that reduced TiO2 samples present 14 000-fold more spins compared to the pristine TiO2, and the intensity can reach as high as 24.6 x 10(19) spins per g. The obtained samples also have a unique disordered layer with a thickness of 1-2 nm on their surfaces, which contributes to the stabilization of the formed Ti3+ species by preventing their oxidation in air. In addition, the synthesized reduced TiO2 samples also exhibit wide-spectrum solar light absorption, especially in the near-infrared region. Owing to their enhanced solar light absorption, improved electron-hole separation and special facet exposure, these samples exhibit enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance and high CH4 selectivity under solar light irradiation, in the absence of a noble metal Pt as a co-catalyst.

Abstract:TiO2/SBA-15 catalysts, TiO2 nanoparticles well dispersed on SBA-15 supporter, have been successfully obtained through a self-assembly aging, carboxylation and subsequent solvothermal process. Firstly, P123 (PEG-PPG-PEG), KCl, (2-cyanoethyl) triethoxysilane (CETES) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) were employed to form cyano-modified SBA-15 (CN/SBA-15) in 2.0 mol/L HCl solution by Self-assembly aging method. Secondly, carboxyl-modified SBA-15 (COOH/SBA-15) was got through carboxylation treatment in 48% H2SO4 solution at 95 degrees C for 24 h. Finally, highly dispersed TiO2/SBA-15 catalysts were successfully synthesized via solvothermal method at 220 degrees C for 12 h using COOH/SBA-15 and tetrabutyl titanate (TB) as raw materials. In order to remove the organic compounds and improve the crystallization of TiO2, the obtained TiO2/SBA-15 catalysts then were filtrated, washed by absolute ethanol for three times, dried at 80 degrees C and calcined at 550 degrees C for 4 h. Notably, the self-assembly and carboxylation process produced large number of good dispersive carboxyl groups (COOH) on SBA-15, which could effectively anchored TB molecules on SBA-15 to promise the highly dispersion of TiO2 on SBA-15. The obtained TiO2/SBA-15 catalysts have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrum, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption and UV-Visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis). Above results indicate that the TiO2/SBA-15 catalysts exhibit large specific surface area and TiO2 on SBA-15 supporter is anatase phase, they are both play important roles in photocatalytic application. In the current manuscript, the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 under UV light irradiation as a prober reaction was used to investigate the photocatalytic performance of TiO2/SBA-15 catalysts. It was found that the obtained catalysts performed high photocatalytic capacity for CO2 reduction, especially when the loading amount of TiO2 was around 16.5 wt% [n(COOH)/n(TB)=3], the methanol production got maximum which could reach 80 mu mol/g-catalyst after 6 h UV light irradiation. Compared with the catalysts which synthesized through simple impregnation method, our TiO2/SBA-15 catalysts showed the higher activity in photocatalytic reduction of CO2, owing to the better dispersion and crystallization.

Abstract:The photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction is a sustainable route to the direct conversion of greenhouse gases into chemicals without additional energy consumption. Given the vast amount of greenhouse gas, numerous efforts have been devoted to developing inorganic photocatalysts, e.g., titanium dioxide (TiO2 ), due to their stability, low cost, and environmentally friendly properties. However, a more efficient TiO2 photocatalyst without noble metals is highly desirable for CO2 reduction, and it is both difficult and urgent to produce selectively valuable compounds. Here, a novel "single-atom site at the atomic step" strategy is developed by anchoring a single tungsten (W) atom site with oxygen-coordination at the intrinsic steps of classic TiO2 nanoparticles. The composition of active sites for CO2 reduction can be controlled by tuning the additional W5+ to form W5+ -O-Ti3+ sites, resulting in both significant CO2 reduction efficiency with 60.6 μmol g- 1 h- 1 and selectivity for methane (CH4 ) over carbon monoxide (CO), which exceeds those of pristine TiO2 by more than one order of magnitude. The mechanism relies on the accurate control of the single-atom sites at step with 22.8% coverage of surface sites and the subsequent excellent electron-hole separation along with the favorable adsorption-desorption of intermediates at the sites.

Abstract:Photoreduction of CO2 into fuels over TiO2 helps to relieve the increasing energy crisis and the worsening global climate, while the low energetic efficiency impedes its large-scale applications. Herein, ultrathin TiO2 flakes are first put forward to fully optimize their crucial CO2 photoreduction processes through affording abundant catalytically active sites and increased two-dimensional conductivity. 1.66nm thick TiO2 flakes are successfully fabricated by virtue of lamellar TiO−2 octylamine hybrid. The atomic thickness endows TiO2 with ultrahigh fraction of surface atoms, which ensures stronger UV light absorption compared with its bulk counterpart. Benefiting from the increased density of states near Fermi level and the vast majority of charge density concentrating on the surface, the ultrathin TiO2 flakes show increased conductivity confirmed by the temperature-dependent resistivities. The 3 times higher fluorescence lifetime, revealed by the time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, accounts for the increased separate rate of photoexcited electron-hole pairs. As an outcome, the ultrathin TiO2 flakes achieve a formate formation rate of 1.9μmolg−1h−1, 450 times higher than that of bulk counterpart and also roughly 2 times higher than that of previously reported Ag-modified BaLa4Ti4O15. Briefly, our study will unlock many opportunities for designing efficient CO2 photoreduction performance.

Abstract:Two-dimensional titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) MXene nanosheets have been widely concerned due to its abundant surface functional groups, high conductivity, excellent photoelectrochemical properties and thermal conductivity. Nevertheless, it is still a challenge for the mass production of high-quality Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets. Herein, the bulk Ti3C2Tx MXene powders were stripped into monolayer or few layer nanosheets in propylene carbonate through liquid-phase exfoliation strategy assisted via alkanolamine as intercalators. It is shown that the stripping yield is up to 59.3 %, which is the recorded value for the delamination of Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets from bulk Ti3C2Tx MXene powder, and 62.2 % of nanosheets are monolayer. The ability of hydrogen bond donor and molecular size of alkanolamine have important effects on the yield. Moreover, Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets have been employed as catalysts in the photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The yield of CO is 149.7 μmol g-1h−1, which is about five times that of bulk Ti3C2Tx MXene powder. This work paves the way for the mass production of MXene nanosheets with high activity photocatalysis.
