Abstract:In an underwater environment, light always scatters and absorbs as it travels from the object to the camera, seriously affecting image quality. As a result, underwater images have poorer contrast, like a haze covering them. In this paper, a modified method for images restoration based on the dark channel prior (DCP) is presented, Firstly, the ambient light is estimated according to the difference between the blue and red channel. Then, attenuations of three RGB channels are obtained separately. Finally, a color collection is used to compensate the remaining color distortion. The experiments carried out at last demonstrate the good performance of this method for improving the visibility of underwater images.

Abstract:Underwater multispectral imaging is a promising technique for high-fidelity underwater color reproduction and mapping of kelp,sea grass,corals,etc.However,as light propagates through water,light is severely absorbed and scattered by water,causing image dim,hazy and distorted in its spectrum and color.In this paper,calibration of water attenuation coefficient based on underwater images and restoration of underwater multispectral images are discussed.Multispectral images of an underwater object are captured at different underwater distances.Technique has been proposed to calibrate the water attenuation coefficient based on underwater images of different distances and restore the raw images.Analysis was also conducted to search for the least number of distances for coefficient calibration and restoration.By comparing the restored underwater images with the images captured in air,it's found that the technique proposed in this paper provides accurate restoration of underwater spectral images,with a relative residual error of 5.87％ in average for all test images.

Abstract:Underwater image processing is crucial for many practical applications in the ocean filed, which is not a trivial thing since the environment of underwater is often complicated and short of light. The major difficulty is that a captured image is fuzzy, under-exposed and often has the color cast due to the fact that the light is absorbed and scattered. To overcome those difficulties, we propose a new underwater image enhancement method, which is composed of two successive vital processings: the dehazing and color correction. Firstly, considering the characteristic of light propagation under water, we propose a new dehazing algorithm to restore the visibility of degraded underwater images based on the dark channel prior, through building up the relationship of the transmission rates among three color channels. Then, to further improve the image quality, we adopt an effective color correction method on the obtained haze-free underwater images. We conduct extensive experiments under measure tests of both subjective and objective, and the results show that our method is superior to several existing approaches.

Abstract:Perceiving color in water medium is always challenging due to the dense non-uniform attenuation and scattering of light across the visible spectrum. This paper presents a color restoration method for underwater objects based on multispectral images. To begin with, underwater multispectral images are obtained and restored with the influence of attenuation and scattering being eliminated by an in-suit restoration algorithm, and later on color images are restored from the multispectral images. Assessment of the restored color images and images taken by color camera in air medium authenticates the accuracy of the restoration method.

Abstract:A color-line and dark channel based dehazing algorithm was proposed to solve the problem of image contrast decreasing caused by haze in remote sensing images.In view of the deficiencies in the color-line a priori, a least squares based transmittance optimization method was proposed.In order to obtain a more accurate transmittance distribution, the transmissivity maps estimated by the color-line prior and the dark channel prior are fused by weight which is calculated by their credibility.A gradient regularization constraint was added to the optimization equation to avoid the halo effect.The experimental results show that the proposed method is accurate in estimating transmittance and the clarity of the reconstruction results is significantly improved.In addition, the objoctive evaluation index is improved as its Gray Mean Grads (GMG) and Information Entropy (IE) show the highest average value, which indicates that the proposed method has achieve the best reconstruction result among the state-of-art methods.

Abstract:The attenuation (sum of absorption and scattering), which caused by the dense and non-uniform medium, generally leads to problems of color degradation and detail loss in underwater imaging. To address these problems, we propose a systematic underwater image enhancement method, which includes an attenuation map guided underwater image color correction approach and a detail preserved dehazing approach. The color correction approach fully considers the main causes of color degradation in underwater imaging, namely wavelength-dependent attenuation of different colors. According to the attenuation map of each color channel, a piece-wise linear transform is used to process the information of each color channel. Then, the detail preserved dehazing approach based on multi-scale decomposition is proposed to compensate for the lost details while eliminating the effects of haze. Especially, an adaptive Maximum Intensity Prior (MIP) measurement based on maximum attenuation identification is proposed to estimate transmission of the medium. Experiments on a variety types of degraded underwater images have proven that our proposed method can produce accurate results with vivid color and fine details, even better than other state-of-the-art underwater image dehazing methods.

Abstract:Underwater captured images are often degraded with low contrast, color distortion, and poor visibility caused by absorption and scattering when light travels through water. To address these issues, we propose a novel underwater image restoration method which aims at recovering the scene radiance with an accurate scene depth. Depending on the accuracy estimation of scene depth obtained by combing the oblique gradient operator and underwater light attenuation prior, the transmission map can be further precisely determined. Moreover, we utilize the quad-tree subdivision to estimate the background light by both considering smoothness and color difference. After acquiring the background light and transmission map, the scene radiance can be finally restored based on the underwater image formation model. Experiential results demonstrate that the proposed method has a good performance on dehazing, color correction and contrast enhancement. Qualitative and quantitative comparisons with several state-of-the-art methods further validate the superiority of the proposed method.

Abstract:Underwater imaging is typically affected by absorption and scattering, which can lead to color distortion and image blurring. However, no universal color constancy algorithm for correcting underwater images exists due to the wide variation in underwater scenes. Furthermore, methods based on learning to improve underwater image quality often suffer from a lack of ground truth, which can compromise the validity and authenticity of restored images. In this study, we propose an adaptive underwater image enhancement technique that corrects image color and reduces haze using a valid dataset with ground truth. Specifically, we first use hue channel statistics from underwater images to build a dataset of color-corrected images from different underwater scenes. We use this dataset to train an Unet-like network for adaptive color correction. After color correction, underwater images often exhibit characteristics similar to hazy terrestrial images. We refer to this phenomenon as "model conversion". The hazy terrestrial images have corresponding ground truth. Therefore, we train a Transformer-like network with hazy terrestrial image datasets to remove haze in underwater images. Our method is more robust for different underwater scenes and elegantly solves the problem of lacking ground truth. A series of experiments demonstrate that our method achieves superior performance compared to state-of-the-art methods in terms of both visual quality and quantitative metrics.

Abstract:An underwater image often suffers from quality degradation issues, such as color deviations, low contrast, and blurred details, due to the absorption and scattering of light. In this article, we propose to address the aforementioned degradation issues via attenuated color channel correction and detail preserved contrast enhancement. Concretely, we first propose an underwater image color correction method. Considering the differences between superior and inferior color channels of an underwater image, the inferior color channels are compensated via especially designed attenuation matrices. We then employ a dual-histogram-based iterative threshold method and a limited histogram method with Rayleigh distribution to improve the global and local contrast of the color-corrected image, thus achieving a global contrast-enhanced version and a local contrast-enhanced version, respectively. To integrate the complementary merits between the global contrast-enhanced version and the local contrast-enhanced version, we adopt a multiscale fusion strategy to fuse them. Finally, we propose a multiscale unsharp masking strategy to further sharpen the fused image for better visual quality. Extensive experiments on four underwater image enhancement benchmark data sets demonstrate that our method effectively enhances underwater images qualitatively and quantitatively. Besides, our method also generalizes well to the enhancement of low-light images and hazy images.

Abstract:Underwater images frequently suffer from color casts and poor contrast, due to the absorption and scattering of light in water medium. To address these two degradation issues, we propose an underwater image restoration method based on feature priors inspired by underwater scene prior. Concretely, we first develop a robust model to estimate the background light according to feature priors of flatness, hue, and brightness, which can effectively relieve color distortion. Next, we compensate the red channel of color corrected image to revise the transmission map of it. Coupled with the structure-guided filter, the coarse transmission map is refined. The refined transmission map preserves the edge information while improving the contrast. Extensive experiments on diverse degradation scenes demonstrate that our method achieves superior performance against several state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:The use of underwater cameras instead of divers to enter complex underwater areas for real-time monitoring of fish, shrimp, and algae is significant to the aquaculture industry. However, underwater images are severely degraded due to light absorption and scattering, limiting the development of underwater computer vision and robot vision perception. To solve blurriness and color degradation issues, this paper developed a restoration method based on backscatter pixel prior and color cast removal from the physical point of view of underwater image degradation. The proposed method used only a single underwater image as an input to estimate various parameters accurately, such as depth map, backscatter map, and illuminant map. Specifically, a backscatter estimation algorithm based on a depth map was proposed to improve the contrast of underwater images. Then, an algorithm was designed to remove color deviation based on the illuminant map. In particular, a color compensation strategy was created that could completely eliminate red artifacts in underwater images that were generated by the strong attenuation of the red channel. We designed comparative experiments from multiple angles on different real underwater image datasets. Experiments showed that the proposed method improved the contrast and removed the color deviation of light absorption compared to several reported methods. Even on underwater images with severe attenuation, the proposed method showed a significant positive effectiveness and stability on color cast removal.

Abstract:Underwater images suffer from haze, color distortion, and low contrast due to the absorption and scattering of transmitted light. A systematic approach including accurate background light (BL) estimation and transmission (TM) estimation is proposed based on color-line model for underwater images restoration. The estimation of BL candidate region is improved by combining quadtree subdivision and minimum unary gray entropy evaluation, to realize a high-quality restoration and improve accuracy of TM estimation with color-line model. Given incomplete intersection of color lines with BL, a convex optimization function is proposed to improve accuracy of TM estimation. On the basis of restorations with BL and TM estimations, pixel distribution stretching and Unsharp Masking are employed to correct color and enhance edge information for better performance of vision. Comprehensive evaluations illustrate that the proposed method could efficiently restore underwater images with visibility improvement, natural color correction, and contrast enhancement. Abstract:The red spectrum is saliently attenuated due to the absorption and scattering properties of water. The acquired underwater images show severe color cast in underwater scenes. In this letter, we propose a novel color correction method for underwater images, which removes color cast on single pixels based on scene depth. The experimental results demonstrate that our approach can significantly improve the color effect and provide a correct input for the subsequent underwater image defogging methods.

Abstract:Due to the complex underwater environment and the selective absorption and scattering effect of water on light waves, underwater images often suffer from issues such as low contrast, color distortion, and blurred details. This paper presents a stable and effective algorithm for enhancing underwater images to address these challenges. Firstly, an improved color correction algorithm based on the gray world and minimum information loss is employed to remove the blue-green bias present in the images. Secondly, a contrast enhancement algorithm is based on the guided filter and wavelet decomposition to make the texture details of the image clearer. Then, the normalized weight map of the image is obtained to carry out multi-scale fusion. Finally, the fused image is applied to perform the multi-scale decomposition. The experimental results show that the algorithm proposed in this paper can correct the image color deviation, improve the image contrast and enhance the image details.

Abstract:Underwater images/frames are always subjected to color distortion, contrast reduction and detail loss, which degrade the visual quality severely. Current dehazing methods could not improve the visual quality of underwater images/frames robustly and effectively, especially in removing the undesired color cast. To address the issue, this paper introduces an effective and robust underwater image enhancement method without any dedicated hardware or prior knowledge. First, an adaptive reduction operation on the two stronger color-channels of inputs is employed to avoid the red over-compensated deficiency appearing in color-balanced result. Second, three kinds of color-balanced images are generated from the operation, which combines color compensation algorithms and famous Gray-World assumption. Third, a novel algorithm based on two non-reference quantitative evaluation indicators is utilized to choose the optimal color-balancing version. Then, gamma adjustment operation is employed to generate artificial over−/under-exposure visions of color-balancing image. Last, ‘exposedness’ and ‘contrast’ are set as two weights, being blended into the famous multi-scale fusion framework to generate the enhanced result. Our experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method in both subjective and objective evaluations. Besides, the proposed method is also suitable for dehazing regular fogged images and local feature points matching.

Abstract:Underwater images suffer color distortions and low contrast. This is because the light is absorbed and scattered when it travels through water. Different underwater scenes result in different color deviations and levels of detail loss in underwater images. To address these issues of color distortion and low contrast, an underwater image enhancement method that includes two-level wavelet decomposition maximum brightness color restoration, and edge refinement histogram stretching is proposed. First, according to the Jaffe-McGlamery underwater optical imaging model, the proportions of the maximum bright channel were obtained to correct the color of underwater images. Then, edge refinement histogram stretching was designed, and edge refinement and denoising processing were performed while stretching the histogram to enhance contrast and noise removal. Finally, wavelet two-level decomposition of the color-corrected and contrast-stretched underwater images was performed, and the decomposed components in equal proportions were fused. The proposed method can restore the color and detail and enhance the contrast of the underwater image. Extensive experiments demonstrated that the proposed method achieves superior performance against state-of-the-art methods in visual quality and quantitative metrics.

Abstract:Underwater images suffer from various quality degradation problems such as color cast, low contrast, and blurred details. To solve these issues, a novel underwater image enhancement method that can implement color correction, detail sharpening, and contrast enhancement in stages. In particular, the proposed method combines multi-channel color compensation with color correction. It solves detail blurring and low contrast by the Gaussian differential pyramid and the local contrast enhancement of contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization, respectively. The proposed method mainly includes color compensation, color correction, detail sharpening, and contrast enhancement. Qualitative and quantitative comparisons demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively remove the blur of the image, realize the color correction, and significantly improve the clarity of the image.

Abstract:In actual captured underwater images, serious color distortion, detail loss and limited visibility are common issues due to the combined influence of water medium scattering and absorption. To solve these problems, an underwater image enhancement method based on adaptive color correction and multi-scale fusion is proposed, which does not rely on any specific equipment or auxiliary information. According to the attenuation degree of underwater images, an adaptive color correction method of piecewise linear transformation is used to address the color distortion. Then, the color-corrected image is converted from RGB to CIE-Lab color space, and the luminance channel L is applied to the updated logarithmic image processing (LIP) model alone to improve contrast. The final enhanced image is created by fusing the color-corrected image with the contrast-improved image using a multi-scale fusion technique based on contrast, saliency, and saturation. The qualitative and quantitative evaluation results demonstrate that compared with some state-of-the-art methods, the proposed method can produce better visual quality and have higher average values in underwater image quality evaluation such as AG , IE , PCQI , UIQM and UCIQE .

Abstract:Light is absorbed and scattered when propagating in water, which results in low quality and poor visibility of underwater optical images. Furthermore, the absorption of light by water causes color distortion, whereas the scattering of light by small particles suspended in water results in low image contrast. To enhance the underwater image quality, we developed a method based on light scattering characteristics. Firstly, we group the color cast into five categories according to the proportion of the average of the RGB channels. Then, we use the optical attenuation characteristics to calculate the color loss rate of the RGB channels of underwater images in different scenes and develop a multi-scene color restoration method to correct the color cast of underwater images. While keeping the color constant, we set a 64-block multi-contrast factor histogram stretching to enhance the contrast of the underwater image. The experimental results verify that the developed method has achieved image quality improvement via qualitative and quantitative evaluation. Our approach is proved to effectively improve the quality of underwater images with color distortion, low contrast, and detail loss.

Abstract:Since the light will be absorbed and scattered when travels in water, underwater imaging exists three major difficulties, including color cast, under-exposure, and fuzz. The solutions to overcome those issues are important for the exploration of the ocean. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for improving the quality of underwater images. The algorithm is composed of two components: color correction and illumination adjustment. First, we use an efficient color enhancement method to solve the color cast. Then, based on Retinex model, we make the illumination adjustment, mainly extracting the illumination map and implementing gamma correction on it successively. Experimental results show that visual performance of our method outperforms that of other methods, and processing complexity is relatively simpler.
