Abstract:It is well known that Green’s function can be expressed by multipole expansion, plane-wave expansion, and exponential expansion (spectral representation). These three expansions constitute of the foundations of the fast multipole algorithm (FMA). The plane-wave expansion has the low-frequency breakdown issue due to its failure in capturing the evanescent spectra, while the multipole expansion is inefficient at high frequencies. The spectral representation usually involves in direction-dependent issue. In this communication, the 2-D FMA is interpreted as Parseval’s theorem in Fourier transform. To achieve a stable and accurate transition between the multipole expansion and the plane-wave expansion, a novel diagonalization in the 2-D FMA is proposed with scaled special functions based on a discrete Fourier transform. A wideband fast algorithm with high accuracies can be achieved efficiently.
Natively Periodic Fast Multipole Method: Approximating the Optimal Green Function

Abstract:The Fast Multipole Method (FMM) obeys periodic boundary conditions "natively" if it uses a periodic Green function for computing the multipole expansion in the interaction zone of each FMM oct-tree node. One can define the "optimal" Green function for such a method that results in the numerical solution that converges to the equivalent Particle-Mesh solution in the limit of sufficiently high order of multipoles. A discrete functional equation for the optimal Green function can be derived, but is not practically useful as methods for its solution are not known. Instead, this paper presents an approximation for the optimal Green function that is accurate to better than 1e-3 in LMAX norm and 1e-4 in L2 norm for practically useful multipole counts. Such an approximately optimal Green function offers a practical way for implementing FMM with periodic boundary conditions "natively", without the need to compute lattice sums or to rely on hybrid FMM-PM approaches.

Abstract:The lifting wavelet like transform (LWLT) is applied to the fast multipole method (FMM) to complete the scattering analysis of three-dimensional (3D) objects. The aggregation matrix and disaggregation matrix are sparsified by the LWLT scheme in time. Numerical results for different. shaped three-dimensional objects are considered. It is shown that the proposed method can speed up FMM with lower memory required.

Abstract:A new improved full-wave multilevel Green's function interpolation method (MLGFIM) for electric field integral equation (EFIE) is proposed for the electromagnetic field fast evaluation. In order to use MLGFIM to accelerate computation time of matrix-vector multiplication for EFIE, conventional implementation needs to decompose each of the MoM matrix elements of the EFIE into 4 sub terms. We reformulate the sub term related to the divergence such that it can be merged into the other three sub terms. Hence, the MoM matrix element only needs to be decomposed into 3 terms now and consequently, the computational efficiency is improved.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the exponential convergence of the multipole and local expansions, shifting and translation operators used in fast multipole methods (FMMs) for 3-dimensional Laplace equations in layered media. These theoretical results ensure the exponential convergence of the FMM which has been shown by the numerical results recently reported in [9]. As the free space components are calculated by the classic FMM, this paper will focus on the analysis for the reaction components of the Green's function for the Laplace equation in layered media. We first prove that the density functions in the integral representations of the reaction components are analytic and bounded in the right half complex plane. Then, using the Cagniard-de Hoop transform and contour deformations, estimate for the remainder terms of the truncated expansions is given, and, as a result, the exponential convergence for the expansions and translation operators is proven.

Abstract:The lowering and raising operators of cylindrical harmonics are used to derive the general fast multipole expressions of arbitrary order Hankel functions. These expressions are then employed to transform the dense matrix in the scattering matrix method (SMM) into a combination of sparse matrices (aggregation, translation and disaggregation matrices). The novel method is referred to as fast multipole accelerated scattering matrix method (FMA-SMM). Theoretical study shows FMA-SMM has lower complexity O(N-1.5) instead of SMM's O(N-2), where N stands for total harmonics number used. An empirical formula is derived to relate the minimum group size in FMA-SMM to the highest order Hankel functions involved. The various implementation parameters are carefully investigated to guarantee the algorithm's accuracy and efficiency. The impact of the cylinders density on convergence rate of iterative solvers (BiCGStab(2) here), memory cost as well as CPU time is also investigated. Up to thousands of cylinders can be easily simulated and potential applications in photonic crystal devices are illustrated.
A Fast Multipole Method for axisymmetric domains

Abstract:The Fast Multipole Method (FMM) for the Poisson equation is extended to the case of non-axisymmetric problems in an axisymmetric domain, described by cylindrical coordinates. The method is based on a Fourier decomposition of the source into a modal expansion and the evaluation of the corresponding modes of the field using a two-dimensional tree decomposition in the radial and axial coordinate. The field coefficients are evaluated using a modal Green's function which can be evaluated using well-known recursions for the Legendre function of the second kind, and whose derivatives can be found recursively using the Laplace equation in cylindrical coordinates. The principal difference between the cylindrical and Cartesian problems is the lack of translation invariance in the evaluation of local interactions, leading to an increase in computational effort for the axisymmetric domain. Results are presented for solution accuracy and convergence and for computation time compared to direct evaluation. The method is found to converge well, with ten digit accuracy being achieved for the test cases presented. Computation time is controlled by the balance between initialization and the evaluation of local interactions between source and field points, and is about two orders of magnitude less than that required for direct evaluation, depending on expansion order.

Abstract:The two-dimension/one-dimension (2D/1D) transport method and the coarse mesh finite difference (CMFD) method are widely used for high-fidelity transport calculation. The CMFD method could dramat-ically reduce the calculating time while preserving accuracy. But the CMFD method accelerating the 2D/1D transport calculations may lead to divergence problems in some high scattering rate problems. The results of Fourier analysis indicate that the convergence is improved by increasing transport inner iterations. But more inner iterations lead to time burden in the method of characteristic (MOC) calcula-tion. Fourier analysis is performed on the MOC based 2D/1D method to analyze the convergence feature, including increasing 1D transport inner iterations, iteration sequence of the 2D and 1D calculations, and so on. The results show that the effect of the 1D transport inner iteration on the convergence is related to the coarse-mesh height, and more 1D iteration could improve the convergence rate without introducing much more computation burden. Compared to the 1D2D computation sequence, the 2D1D sequence cal-culation has better convergence performance.(c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The linear axial expansion transport method avoids the negative source problem caused by transverse leakage in the traditional two-dimensional/one-dimensional (2D/1D) transport method and has better stability. However, stability is poor with the coarse-mesh finite difference (CMFD) accelerated linear axial expansion transport method. In this paper, the stability of the partial current-based coarse-mesh finite difference (p-CMFD) method, the optimally diffusive coarse-mesh finite difference (od-CMFD) method, and the linear prolongation coarse-mesh finite difference (lp-CMFD) method is studied based on Fourier analysis. The results of the Fourier analysis indicate that the problem is stable for axial coarse-mesh optical thickness less than 2 or larger than 50; the calculation diverges when the axial coarse-mesh optical thickness is between 2 and 50. The numerical results of the KUCA benchmark problem are the same as the results of the Fourier analysis.
A Heterogeneous FMM for 2-D Layered Media Helmholtz Equation I: Two & Three Layers Cases

Abstract:In this paper, we will introduce a new heterogeneous fast multipole method (H-FMM) for 2-D Helmholtz equation in layered media. To illustrate the main algorithm ideas, we focus on the case of two and three layers in this work. The key compression step in the H-FMM is based on a fact that the multipole expansion for the sources of the free-space Green's function can be used also to compress the far field of the sources of the layered-media or domain Green's function, and a similar result exists for the translation operators for the multipole and local expansions. The mathematical error analysis is shown rigorously by an image representation of the Sommerfeld spectral form of the domain Green's function. As a result, in the H-FMM algorithm, both the "multipole-to-multipole" and "local-to-local" translation operators are the same as those in the free-space case, allowing easy adaptation of existing free-space FMM. All the spatially variant information of the domain Green's function are collected into the "multipole-to-local" translations and therefore the FMM becomes "heterogeneous". The compressed representation further reduces the cost of evaluating the domain Green's function when computing the local direct interactions. Preliminary numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the algorithm with much improved performance over some existing methods for inhomogeneous media. Furthermore, we also show that, due to the equivalence between the complex line image representation and Sommerfeld integral representation of layered media Green's function, the new algorithm can be generalized to multi-layered media with minor modification where details for compression formulas, translation operators, and bookkeeping strategies will be addressed in a subsequent paper.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish convergence rate estimates for convex solutions to the Dirichlet problem of the Monge-Ampere equation det D(2)u = f in Omega, where f is a positive and continuous function and Omega is a bounded convex domain in the Euclidean space R-n. We approximate the solution u by a sequence of convex polyhedra v(h) , which are generalized solutions to the Monge- Ampere equation in the sense of Aleksandrov, and the associated Monge-Ampere measures nu(h) are supported on a properly chosen grid in Omega. We will derive the convergence rate estimates for the cases when f is smooth, Holder continuous, and merely continuous.

Abstract:A time-fractional Allen-Cahn problem is considered, where the spatial domain Ω is a bounded subset of $\mathbb {R}^{d}$ for some d ∈{1,2,3}. New bounds on certain derivatives of the solution are derived. These are used in the analysis of a numerical method (L1 discretization of the temporal fractional derivative on a graded mesh, with a standard finite element discretization of the spatial diffusion term, and Newton linearization of the nonlinear driving term), showing that the computed solution achieves the optimal rate of convergence in the Sobolev H1(Ω) norm. (Previous papers considered only convergence in L2(Ω).) Numerical results confirm our theoretical findings.

A SVD accelerated kernel-independent fast multipole method and its application to BEM

Abstract:The kernel-independent fast multipole method (KIFMM) proposed in [1] is of almost linear complexity. In the original KIFMM the time-consuming M2L translations are accelerated by FFT. However, when more equivalent points are used to achieve higher accuracy, the efficiency of the FFT approach tends to be lower because more auxiliary volume grid points have to be added. In this paper, all the translations of the KIFMM are accelerated by using the singular value decomposition (SVD) based on the low-rank property of the translating matrices. The acceleration of M2L is realized by first transforming the associated translating matrices into more compact form, and then using low-rank approximations. By using the transform matrices for M2L, the orders of the translating matrices in upward and downward passes are also reduced. The improved KIFMM is then applied to accelerate BEM. The performance of the proposed algorithms are demonstrated by three examples. Numerical results show that, compared with the original KIFMM, the present method can reduce about 40% of the iterating time and 25% of the memory requirement.

Abstract:This paper presents a super-convergence strategy for finite element (FE) analysis of two-dimensional (2D) problems based on the recently proposed Element Energy Projection (EEP) technique, which has been successfully applied to various one-dimensional (1D) problems. A progress for the extension of the 1D-based EEP method to 2D problems has been achieved by considering the 2D FE discretization as an equivalent two steps of successive 1D discretization, for each step of which an associated EEP recovery technique has already been well developed. Equipped with the available EEP formulae for each step with some critical modifications, an effective algorithm for 2D FEM is developed which gives super-convergent solutions for both displacements and derivatives at any point on any 2D element. Numerical examples for the 2D Poisson equation are given to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, which yields super-convergent displacements and derivatives with convergence at least one order higher than the corresponding FE solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a unified analysis of both convergence and optimality of adaptive mixed finite element methods for a class of problems when the finite element spaces and corresponding a posteriori error estimates under consideration satisfy five hypotheses. We prove that these five conditions are sufficient for convergence and optimality of the adaptive algorithms under consideration. The main ingredient for the analysis is a new method to analyze both discrete reliability and quasi-orthogonality. This new method arises from an appropriate and natural choice of the norms for both the discrete displacement and stress spaces, namely, a mesh-dependent discrete H-1 norm for the former and an L-2 norm for the latter, and a newly defined projection operator from the discrete stress space on the coarser mesh onto the discrete divergence free space on the finer mesh. As applications, we prove these five hypotheses for the Raviart-Thomas and Brezzi-Douglas-Marini elements of the Poisson and Stokes problems in both two and three dimensions.

Abstract:In this paper, a linearized mass and energy conservative mixed finite element method (MFEM) is proposed for solving the nonlinear Klein–Gordon–Schrödinger equations. Optimal error estimates without grid‐ratio condition are derived by some rigorous analysis and an error splitting technique, that is, one is the temporal error which is only τ‐dependent and the other is the spatial error which is only h‐dependent. Furthermore, the superclose results are obtained by using the idea of combination of interpolation and projection. Besides, a so‐called "lifting" approach also play an important role to obtain the superclose results. With the above achievements, the global superconvergent properties are deduced through the interpolated post processing operators. Finally, three numerical examples are given to validate the convergence order, unconditional stability, mass, and energy conservation.

Abstract:In this paper, a fast multipole method (FMM) is proposed to compute long-range interactions of wave sources embedded in 3-D layered media. The layered media Green's function for the Helmholtz equation, which satisfies the transmission conditions at material interfaces, is decomposed into a free space component and four types of reaction field components arising from wave reflections and transmissions through the layered media. The proposed algorithm is a combination of the classic FMM for the free space component and FMMs specifically designed for the four types reaction components, made possible by new multipole expansions (MEs) and local expansions (LEs) as well as the multipole-to-local translation (M2L) operators for the reaction field components. { Moreover, equivalent polarization source can be defined for each reaction component based on the convergence analysis of its ME. The FMMs for the reaction components, implemented with the target particles and equivalent polarization sources, are found to be much more efficient than the classic FMM for the free space component due to the fact that the equivalent polarization sources and the target particles are always separated by a material interface.} As a result, the FMM algorithm developed for layered media has a similar computational cost as that for the free space. Numerical results validate the fast convergence of the MEs and the $O(N)$ complexity of the FMM for interactions of low-frequency wave sources in 3-D layered media.

Abstract:The numerical success of the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) inspires much attention in analyzing its theoretical convergence rate. While there are several results on the iterative complexity results implying sublinear convergence rate for the general case, there are only a few results for the special cases such as linear programming, quadratic programming, and nonlinear programming with strongly convex functions. In this paper, we consider the convergence rate of ADMM when applying to the convex optimization problems that the subdifferentials of the underlying functions are piecewise linear multifunctions, including LASSO, a well-known regression model in statistics, as a special case. We prove that due to its inherent polyhedral structure, a recent global error bound holds for this class of problems. Based on this error bound, we derive the linear rate of convergence for ADMM. We also consider the proximal based ADMM and derive its linear convergence rate.

Abstract:Abstract This paper presents a convergence analysis for the exponentially fitted finite volume method in two dimensions applied to a linear singularly perturbed convection-diffusion equation with exponential boundary layers. The method is formulated as a nonconforming Petrov-Galerkin finite element method with an exponentially fitted trial space and a piecewise constant test space. The corresponding bilinear form is proved to be coercive with respect to a discrete energy norm. Numerical results are presented to verify the theoretical rates of convergence.

Abstract:Based on the Element Energy Projection (EEP) method, an improved scheme with optimal order of super-convergence, is presented for one-dimensional C 0 FEM, i.e. FEM sulotions can be obtained through the scheme for the elements with sufficient smooth property and m degrees. The proposed scheme is capable of producing O ( h 2m) super-convergence for both displacements and stresses at any point on an element in post- processing stage. The whole work consists of three parts, i.e. formulation, numerical results and mathematical analysis. The present paper is the second in the series and gives numerical algorithm and experimental results, which support the formulation proposed in the first part of the whole work.
