Abstract:Urinary bladder cancer (BC) is a severe common cancer that threatens human health worldwide. The muscle-invasive depth of BC penetrating the bladder wall is a key factor for clinical diagnosis and treatment decision. To quantitatively calculate the invasive depth of BC from three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance (MR) images, first of all, an accurate and efficient segmentation algorithm other than manual segmentation is desirably needed to accurately and efficiently extract the wall region from bladder images. However, this is a challenging task due to the artifacts inside bladder urine, weak wall region, and complicated background intensity distributions. To deal with these challenges, in this paper we propose an efficient convex optimization based 3D multi-region continuous max-flow algorithm (MR-CMF) for bladder T2-weighted MR images (T2WI). It partitions a bladder dataset into three regions like wall region, the urine region and the background region by simultaneously generating two coupled surfaces: the inner-wall boundary (IB) and the outer-wall boundary (OB) of bladder, basing on the continuous max-flow model with anatomical inter-surface constraint and bladder wall thickness prior for efficient convex relaxation optimization. Primary experiments with five datasets of 3.0T T2WI indicate that the proposed algorithm obtains an average DSC of 87.28% and an average time span of 6.0 min without parallelized computation, obviously outperforming the other existing methods for bladder segmentation.
