Conclusions:Th e mortality shows that tobacco has the potential to be used to kill rodents.
Widespread exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides among common urban mesopredators in Chicago

Abstract:Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are currently the most common method to control rats in cities, but these compounds also cause morbidity and mortality in non-target wildlife. Little attention has been focused on AR exposure among mesopredators despite their ecological role as scavengers and prey for larger carnivores, thus serving as an important bridge in the biomagnification of rodenticides in food webs. In this study, we sampled liver tissue from raccoons (Procyon lotor; n = 37), skunks (Mephitis mephitis; n = 15), and Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana; n = 45) euthanized by pest professionals and brown rats (Rattus norvegicus; n = 101) trapped in alleys in Chicago, USA to evaluate how often these species are exposed to ARs. We tested whether mesopredators had a higher prevalence of ARs and to more AR compounds compared to rats and calculated biomagnification factors (mean concentration in mesopredators/rats) as indicators of biomagnification. Of 93 sampled mesopredators, 100 % were exposed to at least one AR compound, mainly brodifacoum (≥80 %), and 79 % were exposed to multiple AR compounds. We also documented teal stomach contents consistent with the consumption of rat bait and altricial young tested positive to the same AR as their mother, suggesting mammary transfer. Of the 101 rats, 74 % tested positive to at least one AR compound and 32 % were exposed to multiple AR compounds. All mesopredator species had biomagnification factors exceeding 1.00 for brodifacoum (6.57-29.07) and bromadiolone (1.08-4.31). Our results suggest widespread exposure to ARs among urban mesopredators and biomagnification of ARs in mesopredators compared to rats. Policies that limit AR availability to non-target species, such as restricting the sale and use of ARs to licensed professionals in indoor settings, education on alternatives, and more emphasis on waste management may reduce health risks for urban wildlife and people in cities around the world.
Exposure of non-target small mammals to anticoagulant rodenticide during chemical rodent control operations

Abstract:The extensive use of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) results in widespread unintentional exposure of non-target rodents and secondary poisoning of predators despite regulatory measures to manage and reduce exposure risk. To elucidate on the potential vectoring of ARs into surrounding habitats by non-target small mammals, we determined bromadiolone prevalence and concentrations in rodents and shrews near bait boxes during an experimental application of the poison for 2 weeks. Overall, bromadiolone was detected in 12.6% of all small rodents and insectivores. Less than 20 m from bait boxes, 48.6% of small mammals had detectable levels of bromadiolone. The prevalence of poisoned small mammals decreased with distance to bait boxes, but bromadiolone concentration in the rodenticide positive individuals did not. Poisoned small mammals were trapped up to 89 m from bait boxes. Bromadiolone concentrations in yellow-necked mice (Apodemus flavicollis) were higher than concentrations in bank vole (Myodes glareolus), field vole (Microtus agrestis), harvest mouse (Micromys minutus), and common shrew (Sorex araneus). Our field trials documents that chemical rodent control results in widespread exposure of non-target small mammals and that AR poisoned small mammals disperse away from bating sites to become available to predators and scavengers in large areas of the landscape. The results suggest that the unintentional secondary exposure of predators and scavengers is an unavoidable consequence of chemical rodent control outside buildings and infrastructures.
Rat poison and food security in the People's Republic of China: focus on tetramethylene disulfotetramine (tetramine)

Abstract:The last several years have seen a large number of mass poisonings in mainland China, particularly those caused by illicit rodenticides. One rat poison, tetramine (tetramethylene disulfotetramine) is responsible for a great percentage of death and injury in the People's Republic of China (PRC). Tetramine is an acutely toxic substance with human oral toxicity estimated as low as 0.1 mg/kg, and is widely available in open markets in mainland China--this despite being prohibited for manufacture or sale in the PRC. Being a GABA antagonist, and having an extremely potent effect on the brain stem, many victims can quickly fall into convulsions and die within hours following ingestion. With no known effective antidote at this time, clinical data from the PRC show that acute cases of tetramine poisoning are extremely difficult to treat. The widespread use of tetramine--including its reported sale at a Malaysian outdoor market in September 2002--could exacerbate its hazard to public health, particularly in those areas having large overseas Chinese populations.
Use of anticoagulant rodenticides: a silent threat to biodiversity in a city of Northern Colombian Andes

Abstract:Introduction: Anticoagulant rodenticides are generalist toxicants that have lethal and sublethal effects on non-target species, leading to an impact on wildlife conservation due to poisoning and bioaccumulation of these substances. However, in Colombia, little research has been conducted on this environmental issue. This study evaluated the use of anticoagulant rodenticides in an urban area in Colombia from an ecological and regulatory perspective. Methods: First, the study analyzed the usage patterns of anticoagulant rodenticides for public health in the urban area of Medellı́n over a seven-year period. It also evaluated the potential impact of anticoagulant rodenticides deposits on the city's Main Ecological Structure and the predator species that may be indirectly affected. Additionally, the study analyzed compliance with regulations on the sale and use of anticoagulant rodenticides in Colombia, specifically for products marketed online. A Hot Spot Analysis was conducted to determine the potential risk of the Main Ecological Structure and the predators selected to be exposed to anticoagulant rodenticides.deposit. On the other hand, the ecotoxicological information of the anticoagulant rodenticides commercialized online in Colombia was characterized, and it was verified whether they complied with the necessary sanitary and environmental national regulations. Results: Between 2016 and 2022, over 3 million grams of brodifacoum, were applied in the urban area of Medellı́n and critical ARs hotspots were identified. The use of anticoagulant rodenticides has significantly increased the doses and number of application sites each year. More than half of the points (51.13%) in which anticoagulant rodenticides were applied were within the Main Ecological Structure. The Strigiformes order represents the greatest risk of indirect exposure to anticoagulantrodenticides. Discussion: Currently, many anticoagulant rodenticide products lack ecotoxicity studies for non-target species and fail to adequately inform consumers of the potential environmental impacts resulting from the use of these poisons. To gain a better understanding of the prevalence, transfer routes, and possible acute and chronic effects of anticoagulant rodenticides.

Abstract:The aim of work is to analyze the current state of the use of rodenticides to control rodents in various areas of human activity, as well as prospects for improving rodenticides. Materials and methods of research: bibliosemantic, bibliographic and analytical methods of research. The research materials were foreign research articles. Research results and discussion. Various methods are used around the world to directly control rodent populations or reduce the damage caused by them. These methods include physical (traps, barriers), chemical (toxic baits, fumigants, repellents), biological/cultural (resistant plants, crop type, sanitation, habitat manipulation). The use of chemicals for rodent control has been practiced for almost a century and is common today. Most rodenticides used today are anticoagulants, which prevent blood clotting. The biological effectiveness of rodent control is determined not only by the toxicity of the rodenticide drug, but also by many other conditions that are closely related to the biological characteristics of the development of rodents. All rodenticides are enteric drugs. The mechanism of toxic effects of drugs in this group is different and is determined by the active substances on the basis of which they are made. The article presents various approaches to the classification of rodenticides and describes the ways of their impact on target and non-target animal species. The risk and toxicity of the most commonly used rodenticides, which have different chemical compositions and can have a wide range of clinical manifestations, are also assessed. The amount of bait that constitutes a lethal dose depends on the toxicity of the poison and the severity of the person. Conclusion: among the prospects for the further use of rodenticides, the leading place is occupied by the development of an “ideal rodenticide”, highly toxic to rodents in small quantities, non-toxic to non-target species and allows to avoid fear of the bait in rodents and, accordingly, rejection of it.
Global review of anticoagulant rodenticide exposure in wild mammalian carnivores

Abstract:Widespread use of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) has resulted in adverse effects in predators globally, but little research attention has been focused toward mammalian carnivores. We found a small but growing body of literature documenting AR exposure in 8 Carnivora families across 19 countries with individual‐ and population‐level effects.Contibutors to exposure, when identified, include intrinsic (e.g., sex, age) and extrinsic (e.g., land cover type) factors. Our review highlights the need to prioritize attention on the potential role of ARs in global carnivore declines, and we recommend ways to improve research efforts going forward. Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are an effective tool used to suppress rodent populations in urban and agricultural settings to reduce human disease risk and economic loss, but widespread use has resulted in adverse effects on predators globally. Attention has largely been focused on impacts of ARs on raptors, although there is increasing evidence that mammalian carnivores are also impacted. We conducted a literature review to assess the extent to which ARs have been documented in wild mammalian carnivores globally and identify potential overlap with imperiled carnivores. We found a small but growing body of literature documenting exposure to ARs in 8 Carnivora families, with Mustelidae (64% of studies), Canidae (44%) and Felidae (23%) most represented. At least 11 different AR compounds were documented in carnivores, and authors claimed that exposure caused mortality of at least one individual in 33.9% of species studied. ARs were listed as a threat for 2% of Red List carnivores, although we found that 19% of Red List carnivores had ranges that overlap countries that have documented AR exposure in carnivores. Collectively, our review highlights the need to prioritize conservation attention on the potential role of ARs on global carnivore declines. We suggest (1) expanding AR monitoring and research outside of the northern hemisphere, (2) supporting long‐term AR monitoring to understand the spatial and temporal variation of AR use and exposure risk, (3) expanding research across trophic levels and across the urban–wildland gradient and 4) research to further our understanding of the point at which morbidity and mortality occur.

Abstract:The use of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) is one of the most commonly employed management methods for pest rodents. ARs compete with vitamin K (VK) required for the synthesis of blood clotting factors in the liver, resulting in inhibition of blood coagulation and often animal death due to hemorrhage. Besides rodents (target species), ARs may affect non-target animal species and humans. Out of hemostasis disturbance, the effects of ARs may be related to the inhibition of proteins that require VK for their synthesis but are not involved in the coagulation process, to their direct cytotoxicity, and their pro-oxidant/proinflammatory activity. A survey of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of these sublethal/asymptomatic AR effects is given in this review. Data from field, clinical, and experimental studies are presented. Knowledge of these mechanisms might improve hazard characterization and identification of potential ecotoxicological risks associated with ARs, contributing to a safer use of these chemicals.

Abstract:Our findings explain why some toxic baiting programs might fail. To achieve successful control, efforts should be directed at reducing the availability of background food to increase the probability of encounter and uptake of toxic baits. It is important to measure and understand the role of background food on toxic baiting programs to explain variable outcomes and inform strategies for successful bait delivery. Baiting is widely used in wildlife management for various purposes, including lethal control, fertility control, disease and parasite control, and conditioned aversion programs for many invasive vertebrate species. The efficacy of baiting programs relies on the likelihood that target animals will encounter the bait, consume it and receive an appropriate dose of the active ingredient. However, there has been little focus on encounter rate of toxic baits combined with behavioural aversion, which are likely to be significant factors affecting efficacy. Following optimal foraging theory, the likelihood of an animal encountering and consuming a toxic grain bait should increase in proportion to its availability relative to background food quantity if it is neither more or less detectable or palatable. Furthermore, the probability of consuming toxic baits might also be influenced by bait aversion following ingestion of a non‐lethal dose of toxin. Using a model system of wild house mice (Mus musculus L.) in mouse‐proof enclosures in Australia, we manipulated background food, applied zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) baits and measured mouse mortality. When background food was scarce, mouse mortality was high, whereas an increasing abundance of background food led to reduced mortality. A scenario modelling random encounters and including bait aversion explained 78% of the variation in observed mortality outcomes and achieved a closer fit to the data than modelling random encounters alone. Mortality rates were predicted to be higher with a higher strength bait, which would overcome behavioural aversion. Ensuring that animals locate and consume a lethal dose of toxic bait is a critical factor for successful bait delivery and efficacy. This is particularly significant in toxic baiting programs, where sublethal doses can make animals feel sick, leading to a negative association with the bait, and the development of aversion. Synthesis and applications: Our findings explain why some toxic baiting programs might fail. To achieve successful control, efforts should be directed at reducing the availability of background food to increase the probability of encounter and uptake of toxic baits. Abstract:Plague of rats has always been a challenging problem for humans, and rodenticides are highly toxic, with no specific detoxifying drugs after the poisoning, and have, therefore, been restricted from use. [ 1 ] Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs), particularly second-generation rodenticides such as bromadiolone and brodifacoum, which destroy the coagulation mechanism in rats, are currently the most widely used rodenticides and are also one of the varieties reportedly causing rodenticide poisoning in clinical practice. [ 2 ] Rodenticide poisoning in humans can occur through various routes such as accidental ingestion and intentional ingestion and clinically manifests as acquired coagulopathy. According to the American Center for Toxicity Surveillance, as many as 16,000 cases of rodenticide poisoning occurred in the United States in 2008 alone. [ 3 ] Although the overall incidence has comparatively decreased in recent years, poisoning from rodenticides such as brodifacoum has increased .[ 4 ]

New Target in an Old Enemy: Herbicide (R)-Dichlorprop Induces Ferroptosis-like Death in Plants

Abstract:Iron is an essential microelement in plants that is involved in several growth processes. The use of herbicides may cause the abnormal aggregation of iron in leaves, but the regulatory mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain unclear. Here, we show that chiral herbicide (R)-dichlorprop ((R)-DCPP) triggers ferroptosis-like death in Arabidopsis thaliana. (R)-DCPP led to reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and iron aggregation, and these processes were iron dependent. Under (R)-DCPP treatment, ROS, lipid hydrogen peroxides, and malondialdehyde were significantly accumulated. In addition, (R)-DCPP induced the depletion of glutathione, ascorbic acid, and glutathione peroxidase as well as the accumulation of toxic lipid peroxides. Thus, oxidation imbalance led to cell death, and this mode of action could be inhibited by the ferroptosis inhibitor ferrostatin-1 or ciclopirox olamine. NADPH oxidases were found to be involved in herbicide-induced ROS accumulation, and lipoxygenase and NADPH cytochrome P450 oxidase were shown to positively regulate (R)-DCPP-induced lipid peroxidation. Overall, these results indicate that the iron- and ROS-dependent signaling cascades were involved in the (R)-DCPP-induced phytotoxicity pathway, which disrupted the structure of plant cell membranes and triggered ferroptosis. Generally, this study provides new insight into the mechanisms of pesticide phytotoxicity and suggests new therapeutic directions to protect nontarget plants.

Abstract:The field of wildlife toxicology can be traced to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Initial reports included unintentional poisoning of birds from ingestion of spent lead shot and predator control agents, alkali poisoning of waterbirds, and die-offs from maritime oil spills. With the advent of synthetic pesticides in the 1930s and 1940s, effects of DDT and other pesticides were investigated in free-ranging and captive wildlife. In response to research findings in the US and UK, and the publication of Silent Spring in 1962, public debate on the hazards of pollutants arose and national contaminant monitoring programs were initiated. Shortly thereafter, population-level effects of DDT on raptorial and fish-eating birds were documented, and effects on other species (e.g., bats) were suspected. Realization of the global nature of organochlorine pesticide contamination, and the discovery of PCBs in environmental samples, launched long-range studies in birds and mammals. With the birth of ecotoxicology in 1969 and the establishment of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry in 1979, an international infrastructure began to emerge. In the 1980s, heavy metal pollution related to mining and smelting, agrichemical practices and non-target effects, selenium toxicosis, and disasters such as Chernobyl and the Exxon Valdez dominated the field. Biomarker development, endocrine disruption, population modeling, and studies with amphibians and reptiles were major issues of the 1990s. With the turn of the century, there was interest in new and emerging compounds (pharmaceuticals, flame retardants, surfactants), and potential population-level effects of some compounds. Based upon its history, wildlife toxicology is driven by chemical use and misuse, ecological disasters, and pollution-related events affecting humans. Current challenges include the need to more thoroughly estimate and predict exposure and effects of chemical-related anthropogenic activities on wildlife and their supporting habitat.
Exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides in steppe polecat (Mustela eversmanii) and European polecat (Mustela putorius) in central Europe

Abstract:Poisoning caused by coumarin-type anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) stands as the predominant method for controlling rodents globally. ARs, through secondary poisoning, pose a significant threat to predators due to their lethal and sublethal effects. We examined the concentration of accumulated ARs in liver samples of mostly road-killed steppe polecats (Mustela eversmanii) and European polecats (M. putorius) collected throughout Hungary between 2005 and 2021. The steppe polecat samples were found mainly from Eastern Hungary, while European polecats from Western Hungary. We measured the concentration of six residues by HPLC-FLD. Our analysis revealed the presence of one first-generation and four second-generation ARs in 53% of the steppe polecat (36) and 39% of the European polecat (26) samples. In 17 samples we detected the presence of at least two AR compounds. Although we did not find significant variance in AR accumulation between the two species, steppe polecats displayed greater prevalence and maximum concentration of ARs, whereas European polecat samples exhibited a more diverse accumulation of these compounds. Brodifacoum and bromadiolone were the most prevalent ARs; the highest concentrations were 0.57 mg/kg and 0.33 mg/kg, respectively. The accumulation of ARs was positively correlated with human population density and negatively correlated with the extent of the more natural habitats in both species. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate anticoagulant rodenticide exposure in steppe polecats globally, and for European polecats in Central European region. Although the extent of AR accumulation in European polecat in Hungary appears comparatively lower than in many other European countries, the issue of secondary poisoning remains a serious problem as these ARs intrude into food webs. Reduced and more prudent usage of pesticides would provide several benefits for wildlife, included humans. However, we advocate a prioritization of ecosystem services through the complete prohibition of the toxicants.

Abstract:Rodenticides are widely used around the world since the 1950s. In Taiwan, an anti-rodent operation initiated 1977 and became a regular action annually implied by the government until 2014. This anti-rodent operation caused many animals of non-target species being exposed by rodenticides and became an environmental issue. The Black-winged Kite (Elanus caeruleus) is a small-sized diurnal raptor widely distributed in the Old World continent. Since 2000, a newly colonized population of this species occurred in Taiwan. Although the Black-winged Kites may suffer from the threats of rodenticides, the population is still growing and soon became the most abundant raptor in farmlands of Taiwan. Whether the Black-winged Kite accumulates higher anticoagulant rodenticide residues than other raptors are still unclear. In this study, liver samples of Black-winged Kites were collected from 2013 to 2016, when the detected residues of anticoagulant rodenticides increased annually. The concentration of residue rodenticide was above 0.2 ppm among 30% of the detected samples, which is the toxicity threshold concentration of other raptors. In the meanwhile, the lesser ricefield rat (Rattus losea), the most common prey of Black-winged Kites, also extended the survival period after fed on rodenticide. The longer survival days after being poisoned can enhance the predation opportunity of raptors, thus affect the accumulated rodenticides in the raptors. This study demonstrates that the Black-winged Kite has higher concentration of anticoagulant rodenticide than most other raptors, which provide the case that the raptor can quickly accumulate rodenticide residues within a short period of time.

Abstract:Worldwide use of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) for rodents control has frequently led to secondary poisoning of non-target animals, especially raptors. In spite of the occurrence of many incidents of primary or secondary AR-exposure and poisoning of non-target animals, these incidents have been reported only for individual countries, and there has been no comprehensive worldwide study or review. Furthermore, the AR exposure pathway in raptors has not yet been clearly identified. The aim of this review is therefore to comprehensively analyze the global incidence of primary and secondary AR-exposure in non-target animals, and to explore the exposure pathways. We reviewed the published literature, which reported AR residues in the non-target animals between 1998 and 2015, indicated that various raptor species had over 60% AR- detection rate and have a risk of AR poisoning. According to several papers studied on diets of raptor species, although rodents are the most common diets of raptors, some raptor species prey mainly on non-rodents. Therefore, preying on targeted rodents does not necessarily explain all causes of secondary AR-exposure of raptors. Since AR residue-detection was also reported in non-target mammals, birds, reptiles and invertebrates, which are the dominant prey of some raptors, AR residues in these animals, as well as in target rodents, could be the exposure source of ARs to raptors.

Drivers of anticoagulant rodenticide exposure in fishers (Pekania pennanti) across the northeastern United States

Abstract:Studies in parts of Europe, New Zealand, and North America indicate uptake of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) by predatory mammals to be widespread and common, with proximity to urban and agricultural areas being an important driver of exposure. Yet, little is known regarding the patterns and drivers of AR exposure in predatory mammals within more forest-dominated landscapes. Across the forest-dominated northeastern United States (US), a region spanning Pennsylvania to Maine, we tested livers from 597 fisher ( Pekania pennanti ) obtained from the legal harvest for 11 anticoagulant rodenticide compounds. We used kriging to determine potential hot zones (within or among states) and used regression models to test agricultural land use, developed landscapes, and protected areas as potential drivers of exposure patterns. We detected 8 AR compounds, with 78.6% of sampled individuals testing positive for ≥1 compound. The highest rate of exposure was observed in New Hampshire and Vermont at 93.3 and 100.0% and the lowest in Maine at 52.8%. The majority of individuals (55.3%) tested positive for 2-6 different compounds rather than a single compound (23.3%) or none (21.4%), indicating repeated and chronic levels of exposure among fisher. Spatial interpolation revealed a hot region of exposure spanning southern New Hampshire, Vermont, and southeastern New York. Regression models indicated the proportion of wildland-urban intermix (low density buildings within a largely forest-dominated landscape) as a consistent and strong predictor of AR exposure, with marginal and inconsistent relationships observed between AR exposure and the amount of agricultural land use, and with no apparent benefit conferred by protected areas in the region. Given that northeastern states support the highest rural human population density in the nation, with individual homes interspersed throughout a forested matrix, residential use of ARs is implicated as potentially the main driver of exposure for forest carnivores in this region. However, surveillance of a broader suite of species, and greater knowledge of AR use in commercial forestry operations, will be necessary to understand the generality of our observations.

Abstract:"A Who's Who of pesticides is therefore of concern to us all. If we are going to live so intimately with these chemicals eating and drinking them, taking them into the very marrow of our bones - we had better know something about their nature and their power."-Rachel Carson, Silent Spring. In her day, Rachel Carson was right: plant protection products (PPP), like all the other chemical substances that humans increasingly release into the environment without further precaution, are among our worst enemies today (Bruhl and Zaller, 2019; Naidu et al., 2021; Tang et al., 2021; Topping et al., 2020). All compartments of the biosphere, air, soil and water, are potential reservoirs within which all species that live there are impaired. Birds are particularly concerned: PPP are recognized as a factor in the decline of their abundance and diversity predominantly in agricultural landscapes. Due to the restrictions on vertebrates testing, in silico-based approaches are an ideal choice alternative given input data are available. This is where the problem lies as we will illustrate in this paper. We performed an extensive literature search covering a long period of time, a wide diversity of bird species, a large range of chemical substances, and as many model types as possible to encompass all our future need to improve environmental risk assessment of chemicals for birds. In the end, we show that poultry species exposed to pesticides are the most studied at the individual level with physiologically based toxicokinetic models. To go beyond, with more species, more chemical types, over several levels of biological organization, we show that observed data are crucially missing (Gilbert, 2011). As a consequence, improving existing models or developing new ones could be like climbing Everest if no additional data can be gathered, especially on chemical effects and toxicodynamic aspects.

Abstract:Background:Tetramine (tetramethylene disulphotetramine, TETS) and fluoroacetamide (FAA) are known as illegal rodenticides with high toxicity to animal species and human beings, which could lead to severe clinical features, including reduction of consciousness, convulsions, coma, and even death.Methods and Results:We presented 2 cases that involved rodenticides poisoning. Even though the patients showed severe manifestations, they were initially misdiagnosed, resulting in 2 persons finally died from TETS and FAA poisoning in homicide cases.Conclusion:From the clinical and forensic experience of these 2 cases, we suggest that physicians should consider TETS and FAA poisoning when patients present generalized seizures, especially in some cases without clear cause and diagnosis of disease. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for positive management and criminal investigation in intentional poisoning cases. Moreover, clinical toxicology education should be reinforced.
