Abstract:In this paper, a method which based on airborne lidar metric was put forward to estimate forest canopy height at footprint scale. ICESat/GLAS was applied for providing the vertical structure information by lidar waveform. In the heterogeneous landscape, topographic change will reshape the waveform and leads to uncertainty of canopy height estimation. SRTM digital elevation data can provide the slope distribution, which was used to describe topographic change. This method comprehensively took account for the impacts of footprint diameter, slope, and surface roughness. The physically-based equation was fitted using airborne lidar metric. The result showed: slope change in the study area directly impacted GLAS-based canopy height estimation accuracy. As slope level increased, uncorrected RMSE increased. After topographic correction, corrected RMSE stabilized at between 3.26m and 3.88m.
