Abstract:In this paper, an in-host HIV infection model with latent reservoir, delayed CTL immune response and immune impairment is investigated. By using suitable Lyapunov functions and LaSalle's invariance principle, it is shown that when time delay is equal to zero, the immunity-inactivated reproduction ratio is a threshold determining the global dynamics of the model. By means of the persistence theory for infinite dimensional systems, it is proven that if the immunity-inactivated reproduction ratio is greater than unity, the model is permanent. Choosing time delay as the bifurcation parameter and analyzing the corresponding characteristic equation of the linearized system, the existence of a Hopf bifurcation at the immunity-activated equilibrium is established. Numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate the theoretical results and reveal the effects of some key parameters on viral dynamics.

Abstract:A synthetic tetrasaccharide (TS4), structurally related to blood groups, inhibited the proliferation of C6 glioma cells in culture and the growth of tumors formed after intracerebral transplantation of C6 cells. TS4-treated tumors were substantially smaller than controls, as expected from TS4 cytostatic action on C6 glioma cells in culture. However, in vivo treatment also caused extensive tumor destruction. This effect appeared to be caused indirectly, either by activation of natural killer cells, cytotoxic lymphocytes, or by inhibition of tumor vascularization. Enhanced antigenicity of TS4-treated glioma may be related to the increased expression of connexin 43 observed in glioma cell cultures treated with the oligosaccharide. Because concentrations of up to 20 mg/ml of TS4 were not toxic for normal neuronal or glial cells, specific oligosaccharides such as TS4 offer the possibility of selective tumor treatment.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a general four-dimensional delayed HIV infection model with virus-to-cell infection, cell-to-cell transmission, CTL immune response and parameter perturbations. By substitution, the four-dimensional delayed stochastic differential equations can be transformed into a degenerate eight-dimensional stochastic differential equations. The existence of the global positive solution of the system is obtained rigorously. By constructing appropriate Lyapunov functions, the existence of a stationary Markov process is derived when the stochastic reproduction number is greater than one. Finally, we investigate the effects of noise level and the cell-to-cell transmission on the dynamic behavior of the model. Our model is a general model of the existing stochastic virus infection model, and the theoretical results improve and generalize the existing conclusion.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a time-delayed nonlocal reaction-diffusion model of within-host viral infections. We introduce the basic reproduction number and show that the infection-free steady state is globally asymptotically stable when , while the disease is uniformly persistent when . In the case where all coefficients and reaction terms are spatially homogeneous, we obtain an explicit formula of and the global attractivity of the positive constant steady state. Numerically, we illustrate the analytical results, conduct sensitivity analysis, and investigate the impact of drugs on curtailing the spread of the viruses.

Abstract:In this paper, a hepatitis B virus (HBV) model with spatial diffusion and saturation response of the infection rate is investigated, in which the intracellular incubation period is modelled by a discrete time delay. By analyzing the corresponding characteristic equations, the local stability of an infected steady state and an uninfected steady state is discussed. By comparison arguments, it is proved that if the basic reproductive number is less than unity, the uninfected steady state is globally asymptotically stable. If the basic reproductive number is greater than unity, by successively modifying the coupled lower-upper solution pairs, sufficient conditions are obtained for the global stability of the infected steady state. Numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate the main results.

Abstract:In this paper, we formulate a nonlocal and time-delayed reaction–diffusion vector-borne model with the saturated incidence with respect to infectious terms and derive the basic reproduction number , which serves as a threshold parameter that predicts whether the vector-borne disease will spread. Furthermore, the global attractivity of the endemic equilibrium is obtained by Lyapunov functionals if all the parameters are positive constants. Also, we can get the globally asymptotical stability for the corresponding time-delayed ODE system. In the case of an unbounded spatial habitat, we show the existence and non-existence of travelling wave solutions for the spatially homogeneous model.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the global well-posedness and global dynamics of a reaction–diffusion HIV infection model with the chemotactic movement of CTLs (Cytotoxic T lymphocytes). We first show the global existence and uniform boundedness for solutions of the system with general functional incidences. Then, for the model with bilinear incidence rate, we discuss the existence conditions of the three equilibria (infection-free, chemokines-extinct, chemokines-acute equilibria) of the model and obtain the conclusion of the local asymptotic stability of these equilibria by analyzing the linearized system at these equilibria. Moreover, by constructing reasonable Lyapunov functionals, we investigate the global stability and attractivity of the equilibria. Applying the Lp−Lq estimate, Young's inequality, Gagiardo-Nirenberg inequality and the parabolic regularity theorem, we also discuss the convergence rates of the equilibria. Finally, some numerical simulations are conducted to verify the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, a mathematical model for HIV-1 infection and immune response is considered, involving two discrete time delays in the intracellular as well as in activation of immune response. Using a recently developed geometric method for studying a class of transcendental equation with two time delays and delay dependent coefficients, we obtain the stability and bifurcation results at the non-trivial equilibrium. In particular, the crossing curves on the two-delays parameter plane can be completely characterized, on which Hopf and double-Hopf bifurcation will take place. In the case of Hopf bifurcation, there exist stability switches, and the direction and stability of delay induced Hopf-bifurcation can be determined using normal form theory and center manifold theorem. These results imply the model will exhibit complex temporal dynamics, such as period oscillations, quasi-periodic solutions, etc. Numerical examples are also carried out to verify these results.

The model has three distributed delays, including the case of state-selective delay. We construct a dynamical system in a Hilbert space and prove the existence of a finite-dimensional global attractor. A persistence property is discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a stochastic HIV model, including logistic growth, CTL immune response and logarithmic mean–reverting Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process. Firstly, we certify that there exists a unique global positive solution by rigorous mathematical analysis. Then, by constructing a suitable Lyapunov function and using the strong law of large numbers and Fatou's lemma, we obtain the existence of the stationary distribution when stochastic reproduction number is greater than one. Moreover, we derive an approximate expression for the probability density function of the stochastic model around the infected equilibrium of its corresponding deterministic model. In addition, a critical condition for virus extinction is established. Finally, through numerical simulations, we investigate the effects of noise intensity and the logistic growth on model behavior, and we also explore the influence of key parameters on virus persistence and extinction.

Abstract:We present a HIV virus-to-cell model with reactivation of latent infection, Beddington–DeAngelis functional response, distributed and discrete time delays. The basic reproduction number <math>R0</math> is defined, and the global kinetic of the model is studied by characteristic equation and constructing suitable Lyapunov functions. We show that if <math>R0<1</math> the infection-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable, while if <math>R0>1</math> the endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable.

Abstract:This article is concerned with a nonlocal dispersal susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) epidemic model with Neumann boundary condition, where the rates of disease transmission and recovery are assumed to be spatially heterogeneous and the total population number is constant. We first introduce the basic reproduction number $R_0$ and then discuss the existence, uniqueness and stability of steady states of the nonlocal dispersal SIS epidemic model in terms of $R_0$. In particular, we also consider the impacts of the large diffusion rates of the susceptible and infected population on the persistence and extinction of the disease, and these results imply that the nonlocal movement of the susceptible or infected individuals will enhance the persistence of the disease. Additionally, our analytical results also suggest that the spatial heterogeneity tends to boost the spread of the disease. We have to emphasize that the main difficulty is that a lack of regularizing effect occurs.

Abstract:We consider a spatially-heterogeneous generalization of a well-established model for the dynamics of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus-type 1 (HIV) within a susceptible host. The model consists of a nonlinear system of three coupled reaction-diffusion equations with parameters that may vary spatially. Upon formulating the model, we prove that it preserves the positivity of initial data and construct global-in-time solutions that are both bounded and smooth. Finally, additional results concerning the local and global asymptotic behavior of these solutions are also provided.

Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena

Abstract:We propose a general model to investigate the effect of the distinct dispersal coefficients infected and susceptible hosts in the pathogen dynamics. The mathematical challenge lies in the fact that the investigated model is partially degenerate and the solution map is not compact. The spatial heterogeneity of the model parameters and the distinct diffusion coefficients induce infection in the low-risk regions. In fact, as infection dispersal increases, the reproduction of the pathogen particles decreases. The dynamics of the investigated model is governed by the value of the basic reproduction number R 0. If R 0 ≤ 1, then the pathogen particles extinct, and for R 0 > 1 the pathogen particles persist, and there is at least one positive steady state. The asymptotic profile of the positive steady state is shown in the case when one or both diffusion coefficients for the host tends to zero or infinity.

Abstract:We consider an epidemic model with nonlocal diffusion and free boundaries, which describes the evolution of an infectious agents with nonlocal diffusion and the infected humans without diffusion, where humans get infected by the agents, and infected humans in return contribute to the growth of the agents. The model can be viewed as a nonlocal version of the free boundary model studied by Ahn, Beak and Lin \cite{ABL2016}, with its origin tracing back to Capasso et al. \cite{CP1979, CM1981}. We prove that the problem has a unique solution defined for all $t>0$, and its long-time dynamical behaviour is governed by a spreading-vanishing dichotomy. Sharp criteria for spreading and vanishing are also obtained, which reveal significant differences from the local diffusion model in \cite{ABL2016}. Depending on the choice of the kernel function in the nonlocal diffusion operator, it is expected that the nonlocal model here may have accelerated spreading, which would contrast sharply to the model of \cite{ABL2016}, where the spreading has finite speed whenever spreading happens \cite{ZLN2019}.

Abstract:International Journal of Biomathematics, Ahead of Print. To study the influence of the moving front of the infected interval and the spatial movement of individuals on the spreading or vanishing of infectious disease, we consider a nonlocal susceptible–infected–susceptible (SIS) reaction–diffusion model with media coverage, hospital bed numbers and free boundaries. The principal eigenvalue of the integral operator is defined, and the impacts of the diffusion rate of infected individuals and interval length on the principal eigenvalue are analyzed. Furthermore, sufficient conditions for spreading and vanishing of the disease are derived. Our results show that large media coverage and hospital bed numbers are beneficial to the prevention and control of disease. The difference between the model with nonlocal diffusion and that with local diffusion is also discussed and nonlocal diffusion leads to more possibilities.

Abstract:In this paper, a time periodic and two-group reaction-diffusion epidemic model with distributed delay is proposed and investigated. We firstly introduce the basic reproduction number R-0 for the model via the next generation operator method. We then establish the threshold dynamics of the model in terms of R-0, that is, the disease is uniformly persistent if R-0 > 1, while the disease goes to extinction if R-0 < 1. Finally, we study the global dynamics for the model in a special case when all the coefficients are independent of spatio-temporal variables.

Abstract:Considering the individual differences, spatial environment and the temporary acquired immunity, a general multi-group reaction–diffusion epidemic model with nonlinear incidence and temporary acquired immunity is proposed in this paper. The well-posedness of the solution including the existence of global solutions and the ultimate boundedness of the solutions are obtained, and then we define the basic reproduction number <math>R0</math>. Further, the threshold dynamics of the disease are obtained in terms of <math>R0</math>. Moreover, by constructing suitable Lyapunov functions, we obtain the endemic steady state is globally asymptotically stable in homogeneous space and heterogeneous case when <math>R0>1</math>. Based on theoretical analysis, we conclude that the existence of immunity loss rate and the difference of diffusion rate may bring great difficulties to control the disease. Finally, we find the spatial heterogeneity cannot always enhance the infectious risk of the disease and simply increasing the diffusion coefficient cannot effectively control the spread of the disease via some numerical simulations.

Abstract:This paper concerns with the dynamical properties of a diffusive viral model with free boundaries, which describes the spread of viruses in space. Unlike the paper (Li et al. in Sci China Math 64:1971–1992, 2021), free boundaries at both ends will extend to infinity, i.e., the habitat eventually expands to the entire space. Moreover, the virus will eventually die out when the Basic Reproduction Number , while the virus will stabilize in a positive equilibrium when and some further assumptions (Theorem 3.2).

Abstract:This paper is concerned with an epidemic model with free boundaries, where the infective rate of humans is a nonlocal term due to the nonlocal diffusion of the infectious agents. This is different from the models in [19] where the infective rate depends only on the agents at location . We show that the longtime behaviors of our model is the same with those in [19], but the methods used here are different. Particularly, we get the exponential stability for the vanishing case that is a new result for such kind of problem. Moreover, by analyzing an eigenvalue problem, we discuss in detail the impact of initial habitat and diffusion coefficient on spreading.
