Abstract:The next chapter of the robotics revolution is well underway with the deployment of robots for a broad range of commercial use-cases. Even in a myriad of applications and environments, there exists a common vocabulary of components that robots share - the need for a modular, scalable, and reliable architecture; sensing; planning; mobility; and autonomy. The Robot Operating System (ROS) was an integral part of the last chapter, demonstrably expediting robotics research with freely-available components and a modular framework. However, ROS 1 was not designed with many necessary production-grade features and algorithms. ROS 2 and its related projects have been redesigned from the ground up to meet the challenges set forth by modern robotic systems in new and exploratory domains at all scales. In this review, we highlight the philosophical and architectural changes of ROS 2 powering this new chapter in the robotics revolution. We also show through case studies the influence ROS 2 and its adoption has had on accelerating real robot systems to reliable deployment in an assortment of challenging environments.

Abstract:In the last issue of IEEE Robotics & Automation Magazine, we talked about a number of different robots running the robot operating system (ROS). In this issue, we are going to focus on one in particular, the PR2. Willow Garage announced in May the 11 institutions that will get to use a PR2 for free for two years through its PR2 Beta Program (Figure 1). The PR2s all run ROS, and the institutions have all committed to making significant open-source contributions back to the ROS community. ROS has been gaining traction at an astonishing rate since its release in January, but having 11 PR2s at top institutions will accelerate that progress even further. We will give a brief overview of what the PR2 Beta Program recipients are planning to do, and then dive into a concrete example of the use of ROS on the PR2.

The book is divided into four parts: Part 1 features two papers on navigation, discussing SLAM and path planning. Part 2 focuses on the integration of ROS into quadcopters and their control. Part 3 then discusses two emerging applications for robotics: cloud robotics, and video stabilization. Part 4 presents tools developed for ROS; the first is a practical alternative to the roslaunch system, and the second is related to penetration testing. Abstract:The advancement of robotic systems has revolutionized numerous industries, yet their operation often demands specialized technical knowledge, limiting accessibility for non-expert users. This paper introduces ROSA (Robot Operating System Agent), an AI-powered agent that bridges the gap between the Robot Operating System (ROS) and natural language interfaces. By leveraging state-of-the-art language models and integrating open-source frameworks, ROSA enables operators to interact with robots using natural language, translating commands into actions and interfacing with ROS through well-defined tools. ROSA's design is modular and extensible, offering seamless integration with both ROS1 and ROS2, along with safety mechanisms like parameter validation and constraint enforcement to ensure secure, reliable operations. While ROSA is originally designed for ROS, it can be extended to work with other robotics middle-wares to maximize compatibility across missions. ROSA enhances human-robot interaction by democratizing access to complex robotic systems, empowering users of all expertise levels with multi-modal capabilities such as speech integration and visual perception. Ethical considerations are thoroughly addressed, guided by foundational principles like Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics, ensuring that AI integration promotes safety, transparency, privacy, and accountability. By making robotic technology more user-friendly and accessible, ROSA not only improves operational efficiency but also sets a new standard for responsible AI use in robotics and potentially future mission operations. This paper introduces ROSA's architecture and showcases initial mock-up operations in JPL's Mars Yard, a laboratory, and a simulation using three different robots. Abstract:The growing interest in neurorobotics has led to a proliferation of heterogeneous neurophysiological-based applications controlling a variety of robotic devices. Although recent years have seen great advances in this technology, the integration between human neural interfaces and robotics is still limited, making evident the necessity of creating a standardized research framework bridging the gap between neuroscience and robotics. This perspective paper presents Robot Operating System (ROS)-Neuro, an open-source framework for neurorobotic applications based on ROS. ROS-Neuro aims to facilitate the software distribution, the repeatability of the experimental results, and support the birth of a new community focused on neuro-driven robotics. In addition, the exploitation of Robot Operating System (ROS) infrastructure guarantees stability, reliability, and robustness, which represent fundamental aspects to enhance the translational impact of this technology. We suggest that ROS-Neuro might be the future development platform for the flourishing of a new generation of neurorobots to promote the rehabilitation, the inclusion, and the independence of people with disabilities in their everyday life.

Abstract:Let us reflect on the state of robotics. This year marks the $101$-st anniversary of R.U.R., a play by the writer Karel \v{C}apek, often credited with introducing the word "robot". The word used to refer to feudal forced labourers in Slavic languages. Indeed, it points to one key characteristic of robotic systems: they are mere slaves, have no rights, and execute our wills instruction by instruction, without asking anything in return. The relationship with us humans is commensalism; in biology, commensalism subsists between two symbiotic species when one species benefits from it (robots boost productivity for humans), while the other species neither benefits nor is harmed (can you really argue that robots benefit from simply functioning?). We then distinguish robots from "living machines", that is, machines infused with life. If living machines should ever become a reality, we would need to shift our relationship with them from commensalism to mutualism. The distinction is not subtle: we experience it every day with domesticated animals, that exchange serfdom for forage and protection. This is because life has evolved to resist any attempt at enslaving it; it is stubborn. In the path towards living machines, let us ask: what has been achieved by robotics in the last $100$ years? What is left to accomplish in the next $100$ years? For us, the answers boil down to three words: juice, need (or death), and embodiment, as we shall see in the following.

Abstract:The robot operating system (ROS) is a widely used framework that enables the underlying code to be reused in different systems, thereby, developers can focus on the implementation of robot application functions. This chapter first introduces the origin, architecture, and features of ROS. Thereafter, instructions for installing ROS and setting environment variables are explained in detail, followed by instructions for the ROS files and communication mechanism. Based on the above content, readers will be able to write a ROS program and familiarize themselves with the ROS workspace and packages and the writing and running of nodes. Additionally, several common ROS components are presented, including visualization tools to facilitate the debugging of the robot system and rosbag for data logging to facilitate the testing of algorithms. This chapter concludes by describing the connection of a robot to ROS and familiarizing readers with the ROS framework by explaining the controlling of Spark robot.

Abstract:In an increasingly automated world -- from warehouse robots to self-driving cars -- streamlining the development and deployment process and operations of robotic applications becomes ever more important. Automated DevOps processes and microservice architectures have already proven successful in other domains such as large-scale customer-oriented web services (e.g., Netflix). We recommend to employ similar microservice architectures for the deployment of small- to large-scale robotic applications in order to accelerate development cycles, loosen functional dependence, and improve resiliency and elasticity. In order to facilitate involved DevOps processes, we present and release a tooling suite for automating the development of microservices for robotic applications based on the Robot Operating System (ROS). Our tooling suite covers the automated minimal containerization of ROS applications, a collection of useful machine learning-enabled base container images, as well as a CLI tool for simplified interaction with container images during the development phase. Within the scope of this paper, we embed our tooling suite into the overall context of streamlined robotics deployment and compare it to alternative solutions. Abstract:In an era where autonomous robots increasingly inhabit public spaces, the imperative for transparency and interpretability in their decision-making processes becomes paramount. This paper presents the overview of a Robotic eXplanation and Interpretability Engine (ROXIE), which addresses this critical need, aiming to demystify the opaque nature of complex robotic behaviors. This paper elucidates the key features and requirements needed for providing information and explanations about robot decision-making processes. It also overviews the suite of software components and libraries available for deployment with ROS 2, empowering users to provide comprehensive explanations and interpretations of robot processes and behaviors, thereby fostering trust and collaboration in human-robot interactions.

Abstract:As robotic systems such as autonomous cars and delivery drones assume greater roles and responsibilities within society, the likelihood and impact of catastrophic software failure within those systems is <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://increased.To" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> aid researchers in the development of new methods to measure and assure the safety and quality of robotics software, we systematically curated a dataset of 221 bugs across 7 popular and diverse software systems implemented via the Robot Operating System (ROS). We produce historically accurate recreations of each of the 221 defective software versions in the form of Docker images, and use a grounded theory approach to examine and categorize their corresponding faults, failures, and fixes. Finally, we reflect on the implications of our findings and outline future research directions for the community.

Abstract:Collaborative robots are becoming part of intelligent automation systems in modern industry. Development and control of such systems differs from traditional automation methods and consequently leads to new challenges. Thankfully, Robot Operating System (ROS) provides a communication platform and a vast variety of tools and utilities that can aid that development. However, it is hard to use ROS in large-scale automation systems due to communication issues in a distributed setup, hence the development of ROS2. In this paper, a ROS2 based communication architecture is presented together with an industrial use-case of a collaborative and intelligent automation system.

Abstract:Developing socially competent robots requires tight integration of robotics, computer vision, speech processing, and web technologies. We present the Socially-interactive Robot Software platform (SROS), an open-source framework addressing this need through a modular layered architecture. SROS bridges the Robot Operating System (ROS) layer for mobility with web and Android interface layers using standard messaging and APIs. Specialized perceptual and interactive skills are implemented as ROS services for reusable deployment on any robot. This facilitates rapid prototyping of collaborative behaviors that synchronize perception with physical actuation. We experimentally validated core SROS technologies including computer vision, speech processing, and GPT2 autocomplete speech implemented as plug-and-play ROS services. Modularity is demonstrated through the successful integration of an additional ROS package, without changes to hardware or software platforms. The capabilities enabled confirm SROS's effectiveness in developing socially interactive robots through synchronized cross-domain interaction. Through demonstrations showing synchronized multimodal behaviors on an example platform, we illustrate how the SROS architectural approach addresses shortcomings of previous work by lowering barriers for researchers to advance the state-of-the-art in adaptive, collaborative customizable human-robot systems through novel applications integrating perceptual and social abilities.

ROS 2 for RoboCup

Abstract:There has always been much motivation for sharing code and solutions among teams in the RoboCup community. Yet the transfer of code between teams was usually complicated due to a huge variety of used frameworks and their differences in processing sensory information. The RoboCup@Home league has tackled this by transitioning to ROS as a common framework. In contrast, other leagues, such as those using humanoid robots, are reluctant to use ROS, as in those leagues real-time processing and low-computational complexity is crucial. However, ROS 2 now offers built-in support for real-time processing and promises to be suitable for embedded systems and multi-robot systems. It also offers the possibility to compose a set of nodes needed to run a robot into a single process. This, as we will show, reduces communication overhead and allows to have one single binary, which is pertinent to competitions such as the 3D-Simulation League. Although ROS 2 has not yet been announced to be production ready, we started the process to develop ROS 2 packages for using it with humanoid robots (real and simulated). This paper presents the developed modules, our contributions to ROS 2 core and RoboCup related packages, and most importantly it provides benchmarks that indicate that ROS 2 is a promising candidate for a common framework used among leagues.

Abstract:This paper aims at providing a preliminary description of ROS-Health, a novel framework for neurorobotics based on the middleware Robot Operating System (ROS). The increased interest in the neurorobotics field and the proliferation of several (neuro)physiological-based applications to control robotics devices made clear the importance to establish a standardized research platform in order to facilitate the distribution of the software, the replication of experimental results and the creation of an unified community to share and manage the code in the years. For this reason, we propose a common platform developed in the ROS ecosystem that takes advantage of its tools and capabilities. Furthermore, we describe the design guidelines that we are following in the preliminary definition of ROS-Health architecture. Finally, we present two illustrative use cases that highlight the advantages and benefits of the adoption of ROS-Health.

The robot has advantages of openness, compatibility, separated function of hardware and software. With this robot, the paper presents the challenges for developing modular robots and explores the uniform software platform for developing modular robots with ROS and integration technology. With this development, this paper presents a way for integrating the functional components of software and hardware into various robots.

Abstract:The Robot Operating System (ROS) has become the de facto standard middleware in robotics, widely adopted across domains ranging from education to industrial applications. The RoboStack distribution has extended ROS's accessibility by facilitating installation across all major operating systems and architectures, integrating seamlessly with scientific tools such as PyTorch and Open3D. This paper presents ROS2WASM, a novel integration of RoboStack with WebAssembly, enabling the execution of ROS 2 and its associated software directly within web browsers, without requiring local installations. This approach significantly enhances reproducibility and shareability of research, lowers barriers to robotics education, and leverages WebAssembly's robust security framework to protect against malicious code. We detail our methodology for cross-compiling ROS 2 packages into WebAssembly, the development of a specialized middleware for ROS 2 communication within browsers, and the implementation of a web platform available at www.ros2wasm.dev that allows users to interact with ROS 2 environments. Additionally, we extend support to the Robotics Toolbox for Python and adapt its Swift simulator for browser compatibility. Our work paves the way for unprecedented accessibility in robotics, offering scalable, secure, and reproducible environments that have the potential to transform educational and research paradigms.
