Abstract:A simple method for preparing a new type of stable antibacterial agent was presented. Monodisperse poly(styrene-co-acrylic acid) (PSA) nanospheres, serving as matrices, were synthesized via soap-free emulsion polymerization. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy micrographs indicated that PSA nanospheres have interesting surface microstructures and well-controlled particle size distributions. Silver-loaded poly(styrene-co-acrylic acid) (PSA/Ag-NPs) nanocomposites were prepared in situ through interfacial reduction of silver nitrate with sodium borohydride, and further characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Their effects on antibacterial activity including inhibition zone, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and bactericidal kinetics were evaluated. In the tests, PSA/Ag-NPs nanocomposites showed excellent antibacterial activity against both gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and gram-negative Escherichia coli. These nanocomposites are considered to have potential application in antibacterial coatings on biomedical devices to reduce nosocomial infection rates.

Abstract:At normal atmospheric temperature, the modified sol–gel method was employed to synthesize SiO2 nanospheres (SiO2 NSs) whose average size was about 352 nm. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were uniformly distributed on the surface of SiO2 nanospheres (SiO2 NSs) by applying chemical reduction method at 95 °C and the size of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) could be controlled by simply tuning the reaction time and the concentration of sodium citrate. Besides, the size, morphology, structure and optical absorption properties of SiO2@Ag composite nanoparticles were measured and characterized by laser particle size analyzer (LPSA), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ultraviolet visible absorption spectrometer (UV-Vis), respectively. Furthermore, antimicrobial effect experiments that against gram-negative bacteria (E. coli) and gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus) were carried out to characterize the antibacterial activity of synthesized SiO2@Ag composite nanoparticles. The results show that the prepared SiO2@Ag composite nanoparticles have strong antimicrobial activity, which is associated with the size of silver nanoparticles.

Abstract:In this article, we present a kind of silicon-based antibacterial material made of silver nanoparticle (AgNP)-decorated silicon wafers (AgNP@Si), which is facilely and rapidly (30 min) synthesized via a one-step reaction. Significantly, such a resultant silicon-based antibacterial material features stable and high antibacterial activity, preserving >99% antibacterial efficiency against E. coli during 30 day storage.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles were prepared by chemical reduction method using chitosan as stabilizer and ascorbic acid as reducing agent in this work. The silver/chitosan nanocomposites were characterized in terms of their particle sizes and morphology by using UV spectrophotometer, nano-grainsize analyzer, and transmission electron microscopy. Antibacterial activities of these nanocomposites were carried out for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . The silver nanoparticles exhibited significantly inhibition capacity towards these bacteria. Detailed studies on the biocompatibility of the silver/chitosan nanocomposites were investigated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay and cell adhesion test. The results indicated that these silver/chitosan nanocomposites were benefit for the proliferation and adhesion of L-929 cells, and the biocompatibilities between the nanocomposites and the cells would become better with the culturing days. We anticipated that these silver/chitosan nanocomposites could be a promising candidate as coating material in biomedical engineering and food packing fields wherein antibacterial properties and biocompatibilities are crucial.
Preferential Facet of Nanocrystalline Silver Embedded in Polyethylene Oxide Nanocomposite and Its Antibiotic Behaviors

Abstract:In this article, a magnetron sputtering (MS) method is reported to prepare a nanocomposite of embedded silver nanoparticles in simultaneously polymerized, nonfouling polyethylene oxide (PEO) film. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that the silver nanoparticles had tunable growth in the preferential (111) facet, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals that diameters of silver could also be controllable in the range of 5-10 nm by varying the processing parameters, such as the working pressure and the target-to-substrate distance. The antibacterial activities tests demonstrate that nanocrystalline silver in the Ag/PEO composite fabricated by this method has a markedly efficient effect.

Abstract:The unique antibacterial characteristics of Ag nanomaterials offer a wide potential range of applications, but achieving rapid and durable antibacterial efficacy is challenging. This is because the speed and durability of the antibacterial function make conflicting demands on the structural design: the former requires the direct exposure of Ag to the surrounding environment, whereas the durability requires Ag to be protected from the environment. To overcome this incompatibility, we synthesize sandwich-structured polydopamine shells decorated both internally and externally with Ag nanoparticles, which exhibit prompt and lasting bioactivity in applications. These shells are biocompatible and can be used in vivo to counter bacterial infection caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus superbugs and to inhibit biofilm formation. This work represents a new paradigm for the design of composite materials with enhanced antibacterial properties.

Abstract:Silver-loading nano-SiO2 antibacterial agent (SLS) was synthesized by adsorbing silver cation onto nano-SiO2 carrier. silver content of specimens was determined by atomic absorption spectrum (ICPS). The morphology and structure of the specimen was characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nigh-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) techniques. Also, the antibacterial performance of the specimens were examined. The experimental results indicated that the silver ion is loaded in the porous of nano-SiO2, and exist as nano-particles form. Antibacterial properties of nanometer Ag/SiO2 antibacterial agent was excellent against E. coli and S. faecalis.

Abstract:A nanocomposite of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) embedded in chitosan (Cts) matrix was successfully synthesized by crosslinking technology. Colloidal AgNPs formed in situ by chemical reduction of silver ions in presence of Cts showed a good stability. Transmission electron micrographs, X-ray diffraction patterns, and UV-visible spectra of Ag-Cts composite particles confirmed the formation of silver nanocrystals. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy verified the presence of Cts as a stabilizing agent surrounded AgNPs. Thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimeter analysis revealed AgCts nanocomposite had a higher thermal stability than Cts. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggested that the Ag-O bond in the nanocomposite coule lead to the tight combination between silver and Cts. Microbial experiments showed the nanocomposite had excellent and wide spectrum antibacterial properties, and were more efficient than either AgNPs or Cts alone for inactivating bacteria. Abstract:Nano-silver particles were in situ prepared by reducing silver nitrate with ascorbic acid in chitosan/1,2-propylene glycol gel,and then nano-silver/chitosan composite physical hydrogels with different content of nano-silver were obtained by replacing 1,2-propanediol with alkaline solution.UV-visible spectra,XRD diffraction patterns and low resolution TEM images show that nano-silver particles with a good dispersion were formed in the composite hydrogels.High resolution TEM images indicate that the nano-silver particles were between 20-50nm in diameter,but its crystalline state was not uniform.Antimicrobial experiments illustrate the antibacterial properties of the nano-silver/chitosan composite hydrogel to Escherichiacoli and Staphylococcus aureus.

Abstract:This work discusses the physicochemical and antimicrobial characteristics of chitosan-corn starch eco-nanocomposites integrated with silica@Ag nano-spheres. These composites were synthesized through sol-gel polymerization and subsequently exposed to simulated body fluid (SBF). The incorporation of Ag into the eco-nanocomposites led to a decrease in diffuse reflectance across the entire wavelength range. The dielectric permittivity exhibited an increase up to 52.1 at a frequency of 100 kHz, while the ac conductivity reached a value of 5.2 ∗ 10-6 (S cm-1) at the same frequency for the sample with the highest Ag content. The study utilized XRD and FTIR techniques to examine the materials before and after in vitro testing and evaluated the antibacterial properties of the eco-nanocomposites against several pathogenic microorganisms, including Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Escherichia coli, using the agar diffusion method. The eco-nanocomposites demonstrated bioactivity by forming a hydroxy appetite layer on their surfaces and were capable of releasing silver (Ag) at concentrations of 1.3, 1.9, and 2.5 mol%. This study suggests that chitosan-corn starch-SiO2-based doped with Ag eco-nanocomposite has the potential for various applications, including biomedical and environmental fields, where their antibacterial properties can be utilized to combat harmful microorganisms.

Abstract:Substantial silver-embedded aluminum/silica nanospheres with uniform diameter and morphology were successfully synthesized by sol-gel technique. After various annealing temperatures, the surface mechanisms of each sample were analyzed using scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The chemical durability examinations and antibacterial tests of each sample were also carried out for the confirmation of its practical usage. Based on the result of the above analyses, the silver-embedded aluminum/silica nanospheres are eligible for fabricating antibacterial utensils.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticle (Ag-np) is a new kind of antibacterial agent which is widely used in medical supplies. In this study, a simple approach is described to obtain Ag-doped HA scaffolds. Hydroxyapatite (HA) bone scaffolds with controllable pore size were fabricated by a micro-syringe extrusion system. Sintered HA scaffolds were then immersed in silver reaction hydrosol in order to get Ag-doped HA scaffolds. SEM and EDS shows a uniform distribution of silver nanoparticles on the surface of HA scaffolds. Such Ag-np doped HA scaffolds, displaying a good antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli), are likely to prevent bone implant associated bacterial infections.

Abstract:In this paper,SiO2 nanoparticles are synthesized using self-assembly for their fabrication.These pores in the particles with an average diameter about 3.61nm are observed,which are considered to result from the intercalation of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB) molecular dimers.The microstructure of this nanoparticles is characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),ultraviolet visible spectrum(UV-Vis),fourier-transform infrared spectra(FT-IR),scanning electron microscope(SEM) and transmission electron microscope(TEM).The SiO2 particles are soaked into silver nitrate(AgNO3) aqueous solution and sodium thiosulfate(Na2S2O3) solution with fully exposed.Results show that the sphereical Ag-SiO2 composite nanoparticles can be obtained.Ag nanoparticles are anchored homogeneously and tightly onto the silica coat of SiO2 magnetic nanoparticles,which can increase the antibacterial abilities by avoiding the aggregation of Ag nanoparticles.The action mechanism has also been discussed of the antiseptic.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles have been synthesized by liquid-phase and alcohol reduction methods. Silver-doped silicacomplex nanoparticles were prepared using a sol gel process. The formation, structure, morphology, and particle size of the nanoparticles have been studied using several techniques. Silver nanoparticles of size of 30-40 nm were formed successfully by alcohol reduction. TEM images show that both the concentration and the molecular weight of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) considerably affect the size of the emerging silver nanoparticles. The number of silver-doped silica-complex particles increased by a mercapto-group treatment that showed a narrower size distribution than that of silica treated with amino groups. The silver/polyester and silver-doped silica/polyester masterbatch chips showed excellent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

Abstract:Silica nanospheres encapsulating silver nanoclusters (denoted as Ag-SiO2) have been synthesized via a one-pot microemulsion method and their antibacterial activities have been investigated in detail. ICP-AES analysis indicated that the silver ions were continually released from the silica spheres in aqueous solution. The antibacterial properties of Ag-SiO2 against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus were evaluated using minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC), and the modified Kirby–Bauer method. The results show that the Ag-SiO2 exhibits excellent and durable antimicrobial activities. The growth of both Gram-negative E. coli and Gram-positive S. aureus was completely inhibited during 48h culture period. Moreover, the tested silver nanoclusters show higher activity against bacteria than the silver nanoparticles. This newly designed Ag-SiO2 may offer a rapid and constant antimicrobial solution for practical applications.

Abstract:We synthesized Fe3O4@C@Ag nanocomposites through a combination of solvothermal, hydrothermal, and chemical redox reactions. Characterization of the resulting samples by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, field-emission scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and magnetic measurement is reported. Compared to Fe3O4@Ag nanocomposites, the Fe3O 4@C@Ag nanocomposites showed enhanced antibacterial activity. The Fe3O4@C@Ag nanocomposites were able to almost entirely prevent growth of Escherichia coli when the concentration of Ag nanoparticles was 10 μg/mL. Antibacterial activity of the Fe3O4@C@Ag nanocomposites was maintained for more than 40 h at 37 °C. The intermediate carbon layer not only protects magnetic core, but also improves the dispersion and antibacterial activity of the silver nanoparticles. The magnetic core can be used to control the specific location of the antibacterial agent (via external magnetic field) and to recycle the residual silver nanoparticles. The Fe 3O4@C@Ag nanocomposites will have potential uses in many fields as catalysts, absorbents, and bifunctional magnetic-optical materials. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Hybrid silver/chitosan composites were prepared and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) exhibited that silver nanoparticles were embedded in chitosan. The antibacterial activities of these composites were screened against Escherichia coli, Salmonella choleraesuis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis, which were much higher than that of chitosan. The TEM images of the treated bacteria showed that silver nanoparticles adhered to the bacterial cell surface and entered the interior of the cell, assuming that silver nanoparticles released from silver/chitosan composites could efficiently destroy the cell integrity of bacteria. Moreover, the composites exhibited higher antioxidant activity than chitosan based on the assessment of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and hydroxyl radical scavenging and reducing power.

Abstract:Dextran-capped silver nanoparticles were synthesized by reducing silver nitrate with NaBH4 in the presence of dextran as capping agent. The characters of silver nanoparticles were investigated using UV-Vis spectrophotometer, nano-grainsize analyzer, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. Results showed that the silver nanoparticles capped with dextran were in uniform shape and narrow size distribution. Moreover, compared with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-capped silver nanoparticles, the dextran-capped ones possessed better stability. Antibacterial tests of these silver nanoparticles were carried out for Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Results suggested that the dextran-capped silver nanoparticles had high antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In addition, the cytotoxicity in vitro of the dextran-capped silver nanoparticles was investigated using mouse fibrosarcoma cells (L929). The toxicity was evaluated by the changes of cell morphology and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide assay. Results indicated that these silver nanoparticles had slight effect on the survival and proliferation of L-929 cells at their minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). After modified by dextran, the physiochemical properties of the silver nanoparticles had been improved. We anticipated that these dextran-capped silver nanoparticles could be integrated into systems for biological and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract:An elegant and facile route for the preparation of polymer/silver nanocomposites for polymers having solubility in organic solvents has been developed. Aqueous colloidal solution of nano-silver has been used as the source of nano-silver particles. Nano-silver particles were transferred to the poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) solution in chloroform using phase transfer methodology. Separation of the aqueous phase gave solution of nano-silver/PMA in chloroform. The solution was coated onto glass substrate providing uniform film of antibacterial PMA/silver nanocomposite, thus exhibiting its potential application as a coating material. The same methodology has been successfully extended to prepare polyether sulphone/silver nanocomposites.
