Abstract:The porous carbon blacks rationally designed by a facile yet efficient NH3 thermal etching route have been investigated as anode materials in an ether-based electrolyte for sodium-ion batteries. The as-synthesized CBN35 carbon black with a 35% weight loss after NH3 thermal etching exhibited a large specific charge capacity of 352 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1 and a superior rate capability of 101 mAh g−1 at 16000 mA g−1, due to its highest microporosity, an appropriate surface area, a desirable microstructure, and a promising hybrid intercalation mechanism. Impressively, even cycled at 1600 mA g−1 over 3200 cycles, an outstanding reversible capacity of 103 mAh g−1 with a negligible 0.0162% capacity loss per cycle can still be achieved. Based on the multimodal characterizations including the structural probes of phase evolution for carbon materials, the electrochemical techniques, and the surface-sensitive XAS measurements, the exceptional electrochemical properties should stem from several merits of modified carbon black system. While the particular microporous structure provides relatively more accessible sodium storage sites, a novel hybrid intercalation mechanism in ether-based electrolyte would incorporate the sodium ion insertion into the disordered structure with the solvated sodium ion species co-intercalation into the graphitic phase. In addition to the diffusion-controlled redox reactions, the noticeable surface-induced pseudocapacitive reactions also significantly contribute to the charge storage upon sodiation and guarantee the rapid migrations of sodium ions/solvated compounds. This system further features a controlled emergence of a robust but thin solid electrolyte interphase layer, which could suppress the side reactions of active electrode with reactive electrolyte, maintain the fragile porous structure upon cycling, and facilitate the migrations of sodium ions and solvated sodium ion compounds.

Abstract:The electrochemical performance of lithium ion batteries is closely related to the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film formed on anode surface. Despite the widespread commercialization of graphite anodes, SEI still suffers from unsatisfactory stability, leading to gradual loss of active lithium ions and capacity degradation of batteries. Here organic small molecular salts with unsaturated bonds and diverse anions are coated on graphite particles and work as substrates to form a modified SEI. The C=C double bond-containing organic salts, sodium acrylate (SA), sodium vinylsulfonate (SVS) and vinyl sodium phosphate (VSP), possessing carboxylate, sulfonate and phosphate groups, respectively, are rationally selected and their effects on the SEI and electrochemical properties of graphite anodes are systematically investigated. SVS modified graphite generates a SEI film with high flexibility, good compactness and lithium ions conductivity owning to the in-situ polymerization of carbon double bonds and polarity of ionic sulfonate groups. Accordingly, the first coulombic efficiency, rate capability and cycle life of graphite anodes are improved in both half cell and LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2-based full cell testing. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:A 5-nm-thick artificial solid electrolyte interface (SEI) was engineered for the hard carbon anodes of sodium-ion batteries. Benefiting from the artificial SEI, the hard carbon anode shows a significantly improved initial Coulombic efficiency of 94% and superior rate performance with a reversible capacity of 247 mA h g −1 after 800 cycles at 1C, 220 mA h g −1 after 400 cycles at 6C.

Enhanced Anion‐derived Inorganic‐dominated Solid Electrolyte Interphases for High‐rate and Stable Sodium Storage

Abstract:It is highly desirable for the promising sodium storage possessing high rate and long stable capability, which are mainly hindered by the unstable yet conventional solvent‐derived organic‐rich solid electrolyte interphases (SEI). Herein, an electrolyte solvation chemistry is elaborately manipulated to produce an enhanced anion‐derived and inorganic components‐dominated SEI by introducing a low permittivity (4.33) bis(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl) ether (BTFE) diluent into the bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (NaFSI)‐dimethoxyethane (DME)‐based high concentration electrolyte (HCE) to obtain a localized HCE (LHCE). The BTFE breaks the balance of original cation solvation structure and tends to interact with Na+‐coordinated DME solvent rather than Na+ in HCE, leaving an enhanced Coulombic interaction between Na+ and FSI−, and more FSI− can enter the Na+ solvation shell, forming a further increased number of Na+‐FSI−‐DME clusters (from 82.0% for HCE to 94.3% for LHCE) at a low salt dosage. The preferential reduction of this FSI−‐enriched clusters rather than the DME‐dominated Na+ solvation structure produces an enhanced anion‐derived and inorganic components‐dominated SEI. The reversible charge storage process of Na is decoupled by operando Raman along with a shift of D and G peaks. Benefiting from the enhanced anion‐derived electrode‐electrolyte interface, the commercial hard carbon anode in LHCE shows a well rate capability (5 A g−1, 70 mAh g−1), cycle performance and stability (85% of initial capacity after 700 cycles) in comparison to that of HCE (68%) and low concentration electrolyte (only 5% after 400 cycles), indicative of uniqueness and superiorities towards stable Na storage.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have shown tremendous application prospects for large-scale energy storage system in recent years due to the abundant natural sodium resources. Notably, the ideal SEI film on the anode of SIBs plays an indispensable role in realizing excellent electrochemical performance. In this work, we report the CoSe 2 /Fe 3 C composite derived from Prussian blue analogue as an anode of SIBs, which forms a favorable SEI film within ether-based electrolytes and exhibits excellent electrochemical performance of ultrahigh initial Coulombic efficiency (96.4% at 2 A g -1 ) as well as long-term cycling life (412.4 mAh g -1 at 10 A g -1 over 2000 cycles). We unveil that the favorable SEI layer formed within ether-based electrolytes is rich in inorganics, and thin and dense in microstructure, all of which promote Na + transport. The formed SEI also has a high Young's modulus to resist the volume variation of active materials during cycling. Moreover, the theoretical molecular orbital analysis suggests that the SEI formation process with ether-based electrolytes is driven by the preferential decomposition of sodium salt prior to the solvent decomposition. Overall, this work underscores the significance and origin of forming a friendly SEI layer to achieve rapid and stable sodium storage.

Abstract:In the past, most of the studies monotonously focused on developing electrode materials for sodium ion batteries (SIBs), while the compatibility effects and mechanism of electrolytes with material microstructures on the sodiation behavior are barely involved. Here, we demonstrate the sodium-ion storage behavior of carbon anode in neat ether electrolytes with outstanding ion diffusion kinetics at electrode surface that breaks its innate limitation. Porous nanocarbon with small interlayer spacing but very high surface area exhibits a record high ICE over 91.1% and exceptional rate capability for Na-ion storage in ether-based electrolytes. This is due to the remarkably reduced Na+ desolvation barrier in ether electrolytes (~94.6 meV) that is less than one-third of that in ester electrolytes (~307.8 meV). The strong interaction of Na-ions with ester electrolytes and their decomposition on electrode surface can be suppressed by adopting ether solvents owing to lower Gibbs free energies of solvation and Na+ desolvation energy as revealed by DFT calculations. For electrode materials working with ether electrolytes, a large surface area is critical for better electrochemical performance. This study provides a reliable regulation parameter for tailoring electrolytes with materials that offers promising potential for nanostructured materials toward high-rate rechargeable devices.

Abstract:The energy storage performance of sodium‐ion batteries has been greatly improved by pairing ether‐based electrolytes with high‐capacity alloy‐type anodes. However, the origin of this performance improvement by a unique electrode/electrolyte interface has yet to be explored. To understand such results, herein, the deterministic and distinct interfacial chemistries and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers in both the ether‐ and ester‐based electrolytes are described, as verified by post mortem, in‐depth X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron energy loss spectroscopy analyses, employing a hierarchical Bi/C composite anode as the model system. In the ether‐based electrolyte, fast sodium‐ion storage kinetics and structural integrity are achieved due to the highly ionic‐conducting and robust multi‐layered SEI consisting of an inner dense bismuth‐containing inorganic and outer polyether layer. No drastic capacity decay is observed over 1000 cycles and high capacity retention of 89% is achieved, increasing rates from 0.1 to 10 A g−1. The benefit of this SEI is confirmed to demonstrate a high energy density of 162 Wh kg−1 in a full‐cell and a high areal capacity of 3.3 mAh cm−2 even at a high mass loading of 11 mg cm−2, which is nearly equivalent to the loading of commercial lithium‐ion battery anodes.
Unraveling the Solvent Effect on Solid-Electrolyte Interphase Formation for Sodium Metal Batteries.

Abstract:Ether‐based electrolytes are considered as an ideal electrolyte system for sodium metal batteries (SMBs) due to their superior compatibility with the sodium metal anode (SMA). However, the selection principle of ether solvents and the impact on solid electrolyte interphase formation are still unclear. Herein, we systematically compare the chain ether‐based electrolyte and understand the relationship between the solvation structure and the interphasial properties. The linear ether solvent molecules with different terminal group lengths demonstrate remarkably distinct solvation effects, thus leading to different electrochemical performance as well as deposition morphologies for SMBs. Computational calculations and comprehensive characterizations indicate that the terminal group length significantly regulates the electrolyte solvation structure and consequently influences the interfacial reaction mechanism of electrolytes on SMA. Cryogenic electron microscopy clearly reveals the difference in solid electrolyte interphase in various ether‐based electrolytes. As a result, the 1,2‐diethoxyethane‐based electrolyte enables a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.9 %, which also realizes the stable cycling of Na||Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 full cell with a mass loading of ≈9 mg cm −2 over 500 cycles.

Abstract:Hard carbons (HCs) as an anode material in sodium ion batteries present enhanced electrochemical performances in ether-based electrolytes, giving them potential for use in practical applications. However, the underlying mechanism behind the excellent performances is still in question. Here, ex situ nuclear magnetic resonance, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy were used to clarify the insightful chemistry of ether- and ester-based electrolytes in terms of the solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) on hard carbons. The results confirm the marked electrolyte decomposition and the formation of a SEI film in EC/DEC but no SEI film in the case of diglyme. In situ electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance and molecular dynamics support that ether molecules have likely been co-intercalated into hard carbons. To our knowledge, these results are reported for the first time. It might be very useful for the rational design of advanced electrode materials based on HCs in the future.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:High-capacity electrodes face a great challenge of cycling stability due to particle fragmentation induced conductive network failure and accompanied by sustained electrolyte decomposition for repeatedly build solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Herein, Se-solubility induced Sex2- as self-adjustment electrolyte additive to regulate electric double layer (EDL) for constructing novel triple-layer SEI (inner layer: Se; medium layer: inorganic; outer layer: organic) on high-capacity FeS2 anode as an example for achieving stable and fast sodium storage. In detail, Sex2- in-situ generated at 1.30 V (vs. Na+/Na) and was preferentially adsorbed onto EDL of anode, then converted to Se0 as inner layer of SEI. In addition, the Sex2- causes anion-enhanced Na+ solvation structure could produce more inorganic (Se0, NaF) and less organic SEI components. The unique triple-layer SEI with layer-by-layer dense structure alleviate the excessive electrolyte consumption with less gas evolution. As a result, the anode delivered long-lifespan at 10 A g-1 (383.7 mAh g-1, 6000 cycles, 93.1%, 5 min/cycle). The Se-induced triple-layer SEI could be also be formed on high-capacity SnS2 anode. This work provides a novel SEI model by anion-tailored EDL towards stable sodium-storage of high-capacity anode for fast-charging.

Analysis of the Stable Interphase Responsible for the Excellent Electrochemical Performance of Graphite Electrodes in Sodium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Considerable efforts have been exerted to understand the formation and properties of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) in sodium ion batteries. However, the puzzling existence and role of SEI behind the huge volume changes of the graphite electrodes need to be answered. Herein, the reason of how ether‐derived SEI maintains excellent reversibility despite the huge volume changes during cycling is unraveled. Theoretical simulations and Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrate the formation mechanism of an SEI between the graphite anode and electrolyte. Furthermore, the high mechanical tolerance of the ether‐derived SEI is confirmed in atomic force microscopy. A depth profile of X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy points to a multilayer structure of the ether‐derived SEI. The outer layer comprises organics (sodium alkoxide), while the inorganics (Na2CO3, NaF) in interior region are mixed with some organics. Notably, the presence of organics ensures the adaptability of the SEI to the volume expansion of graphite during cycling, and the concentrated distribution of inorganics improves the Young's modulus (resistance to deformation). Therefore, the graphite anode exhibits high cycle stability (96.6% capacity retention ratio at 1 A g–1 over 860 cycles) and efficiency (≈99.5%).

Abstract:Compared with graphite, the lower sodiation potential and larger discharge capacity of hard carbon (HC) makes it the most promising anode material for sodium-ion battery. Utilizing ether-based electrolyte rather than conventional carbonate-based electrolyte, HC achieves superior electrochemical performance. Nevertheless, the mechanism by which ether-based electrolyte improves the properties of HC is still controversial, primarily focusing on whether it forms solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film. In this work, according to the sodium storage mechanisms in HC at low voltage (< 0.1 V), including Na + -diglyme co-interaction into the carbon layer (SEI forbidden) and desolvated Na + insertion in the irregular carbon holes (SEI required), the NaPF 6 concentration in ether-based electrolyte was regulated, so as to construct a discontinuous-SEI on the surface of the HC anode, which significantly enhances the electrochemical performances of HC. Specifically, with 0.2 M NaPF 6 ether-based electrolyte, HC deliverers a discharge capacity of 459.7 mA h g −1 at 0.1 C and stays at 357.2 mA h g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 C, which is substantially higher than that of higher/lower salt concentration electrolytes.

Abstract:Electrolytes play pivotal roles in the stabilization of Li metal surface and operation at high voltages. In particular, localized high-concentration electrolytes have outperformed state-of-the-art electrolytes due to their unique solvation structures. However, a direct correlation between solvation structure in LHCEs, in particular for weakly coordinated diluents, and SEI composition is not well understood, yet it is highly critical to realize high Coulombic efficiency (CE) beyond 99.5%. Here, a class of electrolyte based on bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy)methane and 1,2-dimethoxyethane was introduced to regulate anion decomposition to achieve ultra-high Li 2 O content of 63% in the SEI along with a highly uniform phase distribution. These unique features enabled a record-high CE of 99.72% and proved the impact of homogeneously distributed high Li 2 O SEI. The related Li|LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 full cell with a negative/positive capacity ratio of 2.5 achieved 90% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 1 C and 80% retention after 596 cycles at 3 C.
Electrode-Electrolyte Interfacial Chemistry Modulation for Ultra-High Rate Sodium-Ion Battery.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries capable of operating at rate and temperature extremes are highly desirable, but elusive due to the dynamics and thermodynamics limitations. Herein, a strategy of electrode-electrolyte interfacial chemistry modulation is proposed. The commercial hard carbon demonstrates superior rate performance with 212 mAh g -1 at an ultra-high current density of 5 A g -1 in the electrolyte with weak ion solvation/desolvation, which is much higher than those in common electrolytes (nearly no capacity in carbonate-based electrolytes). Even at -20 °C, a high capacity of 175 mAh g -1 (74% of its room temperature capacity) can be maintained at 2 A g -1 . Such electrode retains 90% of its initial capacity after 1000 cycles. As proved, weak ion solvation/desolvation of tetrahydrofuran greatly facilitates fast ion diffusion at SEI/electrolyte interface and homogeneous SEI with well-distributed NaF and organic components ensures fast Na + diffusion through the SEI layer and stable interface.

Abstract:By introducing a functional electrolyte additive 2‐chloro‐1,3‐dimethylimidazoline hexafluorophosphate (CDIH) into fluoroethylene carbonate/propylene ester (FEC/PC) based electrolyte to regulate the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) components and thus achieve a highly reversible Na metal anode. The chloride element in the CDI+ is easily dissociated and forms a NaF/NaCl‐rich SEI film together with the decomposition products of FEC, thus greatly increasing the stability of the interphase to resist the side reaction of metallic Na and electrolyte. Highly reversible sodium metal anodes are still regarded as a stubborn hurdle in ester‐based electrolytes due to the issue of uncontrollable dendrites and incredibly unstable interphase. Evidently, a strong protective film on sodium is decisive, while the quality of the protective film is mainly determined by its components. However, it is challenging to actively adjust the expected components. This work can regulate the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) components by introducing a functional electrolyte additive (2‐chloro‐1,3‐dimethylimidazoline hexafluorophosphate (CDIH, namely CDI++PF6−)) into FEC/PC ester‐based electrolyte. Specifically, the chloride element in the CDI+ can easily react to form a NaF/NaCl‐rich SEI together with the decomposition products of FEC; then the CDI+ without chlorine as a gripper to capture the organic–molecule intermediates generated during FEC decomposition to greatly reduce the content of unstable organic components in SEI, which can be confirmed by molecular dynamic simulation and experiment. Eventually, a highly reversible Na deposition behavior can be delivered. As expected, under the action of CDIH additives, the Na||Na symmetrical cell performs an excellent long‐term cycling (>800 h, 0.5 mA cm−2–0.5 mAh cm−2) and rate performance (0.5–4 mA cm−2). Furthermore, the Na||PB full cell exhibits the outstanding electrochemical performance with small polarization.

Impact of Electrolyte Salts on Na Storage Performance for High-Surface-Area Carbon Anodes

Abstract:High-surface-area carbon (HSAC) has been regarded as one of the most promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries. However, it generally suffers from low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE), which is closely related to the formation process of a solid electrolyte interface (SEI). Herein, the impact of different electrolyte salts on the electrochemical performance and SEI formation of a commercial HSAC anode is studied. It is found that the use of NaCF3SO3 enables much higher ICE (69.28%) and reversible capacity (283 mA h g–1) of the HSAC anode compared with the NaPF6 electrolyte (59.65%, 243 mA h g–1). Through comprehensive characterizations, the improvement in electrochemical performance facilitated by NaCF3SO3 could be attributed to the reduced amount of NaxC and the thinner SEI formed on the surface of HSAC during the initial cycle, which not only provides extra active sites for Na+ storage but also contributes to the promoted ICE. Investigating the Origin of the Enhanced Sodium Storage Capacity of Transition Metal Sulfide Anodes in Ether‐Based Electrolytes

Abstract:Although ether‐based electrolytes have gradually been identified as a vital factor to achieving the excellent electrochemical performance observed in transition metal sulfide (TMS) anodes in sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs), there is still a lack of a fundamental understanding about the origin of the positive effect of ether‐based electrolytes on TMS anodes. Herein, a microspherical CoS2 anode has been taken as a representative of TMS. It has been demonstrated that the sodiation process involves not only a traditional conversion reaction taking place between solid‐state CoS2 and Na2S, but also a solid–liquid phase conversion process between active materials and soluble sodium polysulfide (Na2Sn, 2 < n < 8). More importantly, it is first revealed that the long‐term stability and the reversibility of CoS2 anode are mainly due to the solid–liquid conversion behavior, which makes bulk CoS2 gradually develop into a stable porous structure with fast Na+ transport kinetics and small stress/strain during cycling. Consequently, the CoS2 electrode delivers remarkable long‐cycle life with an ultrahigh capacity retention rate of 94.8% even after 1500 cycles at 2 A g−1 (only 2.13 mAh g−1 fading per 100 cycles) and high volumetric capacity of 949 mAh cm−3 at a high active material loading of 3.3 mg cm−2. The solid–liquid conversion behavior between solid state CoS2 and liquid state soluble sodium polysulfide makes bulk CoS2 gradually develop into a stable porous structure during cycling in ether‐based electrolyte, facilitating fast Na+ transport kinetics and small stress/strain during cycling. Therefore, the micron‐sized CoS2 without any modification realizes remarkable rate capacity and ultrastable cyclability.

Abstract:Electrolytes using ether solvents show great advantages in building robust solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs), which play a pivotal role in stabilizing alloy anodes in Na-ion batteries. Herein, we deviate from the most widely adopted methyl glymes (represented by monoglyme) to enrich the ether-based electrolyte chemistry. Stable cycling of Sn microparticles is realized in two ether electrolytes derived from the linear ethylene glycol diethyl ether (ethyl glyme) and cyclic ether (tetrahydrofuran). We reveal that the formation of thin yet strong SEIs accounts for ameliorated stability and excellent rate capability. The inorganic species in the as-constructed SEIs have low crystallinity and are uniformly distributed among the organic matrix, rendering superb mechanical properties in accommodating the deformation upon sodiation, as confirmed by nanoindentation tests. This study opens the door to exploring the large ether family besides the methyl glymes, and the unraveled mechanics/microstructure correlation of SEIs can help screen the potential candidates.
