Abstract:To mimic and use the functions of the ion transport system that are central to biological processes, bioinspired ion-selective membranes are developed and show great potential in a variety of fields. However, the practical applications of them are now limited due to low pore density, low conductivity, or scale-up difficulty. Herein, we demonstrate a 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate phosphate (HEMAP) hydrogel membrane with 3D interconnected nanopores and space charged through simple photopolymerization. The HEMAP hydrogel membrane exhibits high conductance and outstanding ion selectivity, and the membrane-based osmotic power generator shows the excellent output power density up to 5.38 W/m2. Both experimentally and theoretically, the 3D interconnected structure is revealed to play a key role in enhancing charge-governed ion transport and energy conversion. This work highlights the advantages of 3D interconnected nanopores in ion diffusion and shows the potential of our designed hydrogel membrane in osmotic energy conversion, water desalination, and sensors. The Supporting Information is available free of charge at <a class="ext-link" href="/doi/10.1021/acs.nanolett.0c01087?goto=supporting-info">https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.nanolett.0c01087</a>.Methods, materials structure and composition analysis, schematic diagram of device, permeation experiments, energy conversion of hydrogel membranes with different monomer concentrations, precursor solution of different hydrogel membranes, and details of <i>V</i>OS and <i>E</i>redox (<a class="ext-link" href="/doi/suppl/10.1021/acs.nanolett.0c01087/suppl_file/nl0c01087_si_001.pdf">PDF</a>)This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem this paper attempts to address is the development of a bio-inspired hydrogel membrane with a three-dimensional interconnected nanoporous structure to improve ion transport performance and enhance osmotic energy conversion efficiency. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following points: 1. **Limitations of existing technologies**: Existing ion-selective membranes face issues such as low pore density, poor conductivity, or difficulty in large-scale production in practical applications. 2. **Design of new materials**: A hydrogel membrane containing 3D interconnected nanopores and negatively charged 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate phosphate (HEMAP) was prepared through a simple photopolymerization method. 3. **High conductivity and ion selectivity**: This hydrogel membrane exhibits high conductivity and excellent ion selectivity, making it suitable for osmotic energy generation. 4. **Experimental and theoretical validation**: The impact of the 3D interconnected structure on ion transport and energy conversion was studied through experiments and simulations based on the steady-state Poisson-Nernst-Planck equation. In summary, this research aims to demonstrate the advantages of the 3D interconnected nanoporous structure and validate its potential applications in osmotic energy conversion, seawater desalination, and sensors.
