Abstract:With the global climate anomalies and the destruction of ecological balance, the water shortage has become a serious ecological problem facing all mankind, and drought has become a key factor restricting the development of agricultural production. Therefore, it is essential to study the drought tolerance of crops. Based on previous studies, we reviewed the effects of drought stress on plant morphology and physiology, including the changes of external morphology and internal structure of root, stem, and leaf, the effects of drought stress on osmotic regulation substances, drought-induced proteins, and active oxygen metabolism of plants. In this paper, the main drought stress signals and signal transduction pathways in plants are described, and the functional genes and regulatory genes related to drought stress are listed, respectively. We summarize the above aspects to provide valuable background knowledge and theoretical basis for future agriculture, forestry breeding, and cultivation.

Abstract:Plants often encounter unfavorable environmental conditions because of their sessile lifestyle. These adverse factors greatly affect the geographic distribution of plants, as well as their growth and productivity. Drought stress is one of the premier limitations to global agricultural production due to the complexity of the water-limiting environment and changing climate. Plants have evolved a series of mechanisms at the morphological, physiological, biochemical, cellular, and molecular levels to overcome water deficit or drought stress conditions. The drought resistance of plants can be divided into four basic types-drought avoidance, drought tolerance, drought escape, and drought recovery. Various drought-related traits, including root traits, leaf traits, osmotic adjustment capabilities, water potential, ABA content, and stability of the cell membrane, have been used as indicators to evaluate the drought resistance of plants. In the last decade, scientists have investigated the genetic and molecular mechanisms of drought resistance to enhance the drought resistance of various crops, and significant progress has been made with regard to drought avoidance and drought tolerance. With increasing knowledge to comprehensively decipher the complicated mechanisms of drought resistance in model plants, it still remains an enormous challenge to develop water-saving and drought-resistant crops to cope with the water shortage and increasing demand for food production in the future.

Abstract:The regulation on carbon acquisition and water loss plays a critical role in plant growth and survival. Stomata are important portals for plants to control the exchanges of carbon and water between leaves and the atmosphere. Therefore, understanding stomatal control mechanisms and modelling stomatal conductivity are indispensable to accurately simulate carbon and water cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. As global climate change is accelerating in recent years, drought events have become more and more frequent and thus profoundly affect the survival, growth and distribution of plants. In order to deeply understand the underlying mechanism of carbon-water coupling of plants and predict the dynamics of plants and communities under global changes, it is crucial to explore responses of stomatal regulation of plants to drought stress. In this review, we synthesized recent research progress on mechanisms and modeling of plant stomatal regulation under drought stress. First, this review described the active and passive regulation of plant stomatal control in response to drought stress, and discussed the evolution of plant stomatal regulation, including the passive hydraulic regulation of ferns and lycophytes, the active regulation of angiosperms, and the dual-control mechanism of gymnosperms that was proposed as an important transitional type during evolution from ferns to angiosperms. Then, we analyzed the relationship between stomatal and hydraulic regulations, and discussed the debates on the decoupling of plant water potential from stomatal conductivity. The application of stomatal-conductivity optimization models was introduced based on the water use efficiency hypothesis and the maximum carbon gain hypothesis. The model based on the latter had a greater potential of prediction and practical application. Finally, we proposed two issues that should be urgently addressed: 1) to scale up the research of plant stomatal regulation from leaf or individual to ecosystem or even larger scales so as to improve the mechanistic models of carbon and water cycling in terrestrial ecosystems; and 2) to quantify the hydroactive feedback processes of plant stomatal regulation so as to modify current hydraulics models of plant stomatal function.

Abstract:With global warming, drought stress is becoming increasingly severe, causing serious impacts on crop yield and quality. In order to survive under adverse conditions such as drought stress, plants have evolved a certain mechanism to cope. The tolerance to drought stress is mainly improved through the synergistic effect of regulatory pathways, such as transcription factors, phytohormone, stomatal movement, osmotic substances, sRNA, and antioxidant systems. This study summarizes the research progress on plant drought resistance, in order to provide a reference for improving plant drought resistance and cultivating drought-resistant varieties through genetic engineering technology.

Abstract:Drought, a significant environmental challenge, presents a substantial risk to worldwide agriculture and the security of food supplies. In response, plants can perceive stimuli from their environment and activate defense pathways via various modulating networks to cope with stress. Drought tolerance, a multifaceted attribute, can be dissected into distinct contributing mechanisms and factors. Osmotic stress, dehydration stress, dysfunction of plasma and endosome membranes, loss of cellular turgidity, inhibition of metabolite synthesis, cellular energy depletion, impaired chloroplast function, and oxidative stress are among the most critical consequences of drought on plant cells. Understanding the intricate interplay of these physiological and molecular responses provides insights into the adaptive strategies plants employ to navigate through drought stress. Plant cells express various mechanisms to withstand and reverse the cellular effects of drought stress. These mechanisms include osmotic adjustment to preserve cellular turgor, synthesis of protective proteins like dehydrins, and triggering antioxidant systems to counterbalance oxidative stress. A better understanding of drought tolerance is crucial for devising specific methods to improve crop resilience and promote sustainable agricultural practices in environments with limited water resources. This review explores the physiological and molecular responses employed by plants to address the challenges of drought stress.

Abstract:Drought affects plant growth and has become a serious problem worldwide. Populus species have different drought tolerance and sensitivity abilities. In order to evaluate the mechanism of drought stress tolerance in different cultivated Populus species distributed in China, the response to drought in the morphology and physiology of three poplars clones, NL-895, NL-351 and NL-3412 was investigated. The growth, gas exchange capacity, water use efficiency, antioxidant enzyme activity and lipid peroxidation were measured in order to evaluate differences among different genotypes in responses to two watering regimes (80% and 30% of field capacity). Our results indicated that drought stress had serious adverse effects on the seedlings as the biomass, leaf area, nett photosynthetic rate (Pn) and chlorophyll content were decreased while the activities of antioxidative enzymes were increased and the relative electric conductivity and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were enhanced. The results showed Populus possessed an effective self-protective mechanism to relieve the inhibition of growth induced by water deficit through increasing waster use efficiency, adjusting osmotic membrane and decreasing plant growth. These findings deepened our understanding of drought-tolerance mechanism in Populus.

Abstract:Abiotic stress is the adverse effect of any abiotic factor on a plant in a given environment, impacting plants’ growth and development. These stress factors, such as drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures, are often interrelated or in conjunction with each other. Plants have evolved mechanisms to sense these environmental challenges and make adjustments to their growth in order to survive and reproduce. In this review, we summarized recent studies on plant stress sensing and its regulatory mechanism, emphasizing signal transduction and regulation at multiple levels. Then we presented several strategies to improve plant growth under stress based on current progress. Finally, we discussed the implications of research on plant response to abiotic stresses for high-yielding crops and agricultural sustainability. Studying stress signaling and regulation is critical to understand abiotic stress responses in plants to generate stress-resistant crops and improve agricultural sustainability.

Abstract:Drought is one of the most serious threats to crop production all over the world and is likely to worsen with anticipated changes in the climate. Drought impairs normal growth, disturbs water relations and reduces water-use efficiency in plants. Plants, however, have a variety of physiological and biochemical responses at cellular and organism levels, making it a more complex phenomenon. Researchers have been trying to understand and dissect the mechanisms of plant tolerance to drought stress using various approaches. The present chapter describes the strategies used by plants to adapt to low water potential at physiological, biochemical and molecular levels. This chapter also describes the strategies involving genetic engineering used by breeders in order to obtain crop varieties with improved drought tolerance, some of which show great promise. Modern genomic and genetic approaches coupled with breeding methodologies are expected to more effectively identify the genes and metabolic pathways that confer drought tolerance in crops.

Abstract:Climate change-induced weather events, such as extreme temperatures, prolonged drought spells, or flooding, pose an enormous risk to crop productivity. Studies on the implications of multiple stresses may vary from those on a single stress. Usually, these stresses coincide, amplifying the extent of collateral damage and contributing to significant financial losses. The breadth of investigations focusing on the response of horticultural crops to a single abiotic stress is immense. However, the tolerance mechanisms of horticultural crops to multiple abiotic stresses remain poorly understood. In this review, we described the most prevalent types of abiotic stresses that occur simultaneously and discussed them in in-depth detail regarding the physiological and molecular responses of horticultural crops. In particular, we discussed the transcriptional, posttranscriptional, and metabolic responses of horticultural crops to multiple abiotic stresses. Strategies to breed multi-stress-resilient lines have been presented. Our manuscript presents an interesting amount of proposed knowledge that could be valuable in generating resilient genotypes for multiple stressors.

Abstract:Significance Many plant species face increasing drought under climate change, making plant drought tolerance integral to predicting species and ecosystem responses. Many physiology traits interact to determine overall drought tolerance, but trait relationships have not been assessed for general patterns across global plant diversity. We analyzed stomatal, hydraulic, and mesophyll drought tolerance traits for 310 species from ecosystems worldwide. We evaluated the sequence of drought responses for plants under increasing water stress, and showed that coselection with environmental water stress drives most trait correlations across species, with functional coordination additionally important for some relationships. These results provide insight into how variation in multiple traits should be represented within plants and across species in models of plant responses to drought.

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities in the past and present eras have created global warming and consequently a storm of drought stress, affecting both plants and animals. Being sessile, plants are more vulnerable to drought stress and consequently reduce plant growth and yield. To mitigate the effects of drought stress on plants, it is very crucial to determine the plant response mechanisms against drought stress. Drought response mechanism includes morph-physiological, biochemical, cellular and molecular processes takes place in plants underlying drought stress. These processes include improvement in root system, leaf structure, osmotic adjustment, relative water content and stomata regulation. In addition, calcium and phytohormone (Abscisic acid, Jasmonic acid, Salicylic acid, Auxins, Gibberellins, Ethylene etc.) signaling pathways and scavenging of reactive oxygen species are the key mechanisms to cope with drought stress. Moreover, microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi also have an important role in drought tolerance enhancement. To further elucidate and improve drought tolerance in plants, quantitative trait loci, transgenic approach and application of exogenous substances (nitric oxide, 24-epibrassinoide, glycine betaine and proline) are very crucial. Hereby, the present study integrates various mechanisms of drought tolerance in plants.

Abstract:Drought stress is one of the major environmental stresses that affect plant survival and growth. The effects of drought can be mitigated by a number of strategies, including morphological, physiological and molecular acclimation to drought. Many species exhibit changes in partitioning in favor of the structures involved in water uptake and transport, and increase water use efficiency (WUE) in response to water deficits. Greater allocation to root system may increase the amount of soil water accessible for a plant. Changes in foliage area/sapwood area ratio also involve in the water potential gradient from root to shoot. Synthesis and accumulation of osmoprotectants can increase the drought tolerance of plant. Osmotic adjustment in response to drought stress allows the normal functioning of physiological processes to take place. Xanthophylls cycle-dependent thermal dissipation and the integrated system of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants are involved in the photoprotective mechanisms during the periods of drought. Water-stress related genes are induced by abscisic acid (ABA), which apparently is involved in the signal transduction during drought stress. In this review, we examine the roles of morphological changes, osmotic adjustment, xylem cavitation, photosynthesis, WUE, ABA and molecular mechanism for acclimation and adaptation of conifers to drought stress. Moreover, the use of physiological characteristics as selection criteria for drought tolerance is also discussed. Abstract:Increasing vulnerability of plants to a variety of stresses such as drought, salt and extreme temperatures poses a global threat to sustained growth and productivity of major crops. Of these stresses, drought represents a considerable threat to plant growth and development. In view of this, developing staple food cultivars with improved drought tolerance emerges as the most sustainable solution toward improving crop productivity in a scenario of climate change. In parallel, unraveling the genetic architecture and the targeted identification of molecular networks using modern "OMICS" analyses, that can underpin drought tolerance mechanisms, is urgently required. Importantly, integrated studies intending to elucidate complex mechanisms can bridge the gap existing in our current knowledge about drought stress tolerance in plants. It is now well established that drought tolerance is regulated by several genes, including transcription factors (TFs) that enable plants to withstand unfavorable conditions, and these remain potential genomic candidates for their wide application in crop breeding. These TFs represent the key molecular switches orchestrating the regulation of plant developmental processes in response to a variety of stresses. The current review aims to offer a deeper understanding of TFs engaged in regulating plant's response under drought stress and to devise potential strategies to improve plant tolerance against drought.

Abstract:Plants are exposed to increasingly severe drought events and roots play vital roles in maintaining plant survival, growth, and reproduction. A large body of literature has investigated the adaptive responses of root traits in various plants to water stress and these studies have been reviewed in certain groups of plant species at a certain scale. Nevertheless, these responses have not been synthesized at multiple levels. This paper screened over 2000 literatures for studies of typical root traits including root growth angle, root depth, root length, root diameter, root dry weight, root-to-shoot ratio, root hair length and density and integrates their drought responses at genetic and morphological scales. The genes, quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and hormones that are involved in the regulation of drought response of the root traits were summarized. We then statistically analyzed the drought responses of root traits and discussed the underlying mechanisms. Moreover, we highlighted the drought response of 1-D and 2-D root length density (RLD) distribution in the soil profile. This paper will provide a framework for an integrated understanding of root adaptive responses to water deficit at multiple scales and such insights may provide a basis for selection and breeding of drought tolerant crop lines.

Abstract:Stomata are the primary conduits of water loss and gas exchange of plants and play important roles in the interaction between plants and environment.In the context of dramatic environmental changes such as increase of air CO2 concentration,global warming and frequently drought stress,the paper analyzes the great contribution of stomata function to global water and carbon cycles.Based on this,we summarized changes of morphological development and physiological functions in response to high air CO2,drought,soil salinity,and pathogen infection.We also analyzed the involvement of abscisic acid(ABA),Ca2+,H2O2,nitric oxide(NO) and light signaling in the regulation of stomatal functioning.Finally,we proposed strategy to control the water use efficiency without inhibition of photosynthesis and biomass accumulation by manipulating environmental conditions in practice.

Abstract:In the context of climate change, the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events are increasing, environmental pollution and global warming are exacerbated by anthropogenic activities, and plants will experience a more complex and variable environment of stress combinations. Research on plant responses to stress combinations is crucial for the development and utilization of climate-adaptive plants. Recently, the concept of stress combinations has been expanded from simple to multifactorial stress combinations (MFSCs). Researchers have realized the complexity and necessity of stress combination research and have extensively employed composite gradient methods, multi-omics techniques, and interdisciplinary approaches to integrate laboratory and field experiments. Researchers have studied the response mechanisms of plant reactive oxygen species (ROS), phytohormones, transcription factors (TFs), and other response mechanisms under stress combinations and reached some generalized conclusions. In this article, we focus on the research progress and methodological dynamics of plant responses to stress combinations and propose key scientific questions that are crucial to address, in the context of plant responses to stress assemblages, conserving biodiversity, and ensuring food security. We can enhance the search for universal pathways, identify targets for stress combinations, explore adaptive genetic responses, and leverage high-technology research. This is in pursuit of cultivating plants with greater tolerance to stress combinations and enabling their adaptation to and mitigation of the impacts of climate change.

Abstract:Drought and flooding occur at opposite ends of the soil moisture spectrum yet their resulting stress responses in plants share many similarities. Drought limits root water uptake to which plants respond with stomatal closure and reduced leaf gas exchange. Flooding limits root metabolism due to soil oxygen deficiency, which also limits root water uptake and leaf gas exchange. As drought and flooding can occur consecutively in the same system and resulting plant stress responses share similar mechanisms, a single theoretical framework that integrates plant responses over a continuum of soil water conditions from drought to flooding is attractive. Based on a review of recent literature, we integrated the main plant eco-physiological mechanisms in a single theoretical framework with a focus on plant water transport, plant oxygen dynamics, and leaf gas exchange. We used theory from the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum modeling as "backbone" for our framework, and subsequently incorporated interactions between processes that regulate plant water and oxygen status, abscisic acid and ethylene levels, and the resulting acclimation strategies in response to drought, waterlogging, and complete submergence. Our theoretical framework provides a basis for the development of mathematical models to describe plant responses to the soil moisture continuum from drought to flooding.

Abstract:Plants often experience abiotic stress, which severely affects their growth. With the advent of global warming, drought stress has become a pivotal factor affecting crop yield and quality. Increasing numbers of studies have focused on elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying plant responses to drought stress. As molecular switches, transcription factors (TFs) are key participants in drought‐resistance regulatory networks in crops. TFs regulate the transcription of downstream genes and are regulated by various upstream regulatory factors. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms of action of TFs in regulating drought stress can help enhance the adaptive capacity of crops under drought conditions. In this review, we summarize the structural characteristics of several common TFs, their multiple drought‐response pathways, and recently employed research strategies. We describe the application of new technologies such as analysis of stress granule dynamics and function, multi‐omics data, gene editing, and molecular crosstalk between TFs in drought resistance. This review aims to familiarize readers with the regulatory network of TFs in drought resistance and to provide a reference for examining the molecular mechanisms of drought resistance in plants and improving agronomic traits.
