Abstract:Janus magnetic nanoparticles (~20 nm) were prepared by grafting either polystyrene sodium sulfonate (PSSNa) or polydimethylamino ethylmethacrylate (PDMAEMA) to the exposed surfaces of negatively charged poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-coated magnetite nanoparticles adsorbed onto positively charged silica beads. Individually dispersed Janus nanoparticles were obtained by repulsion from the beads on reversal of the silica surface charge when the solution pH was increased. Controlled aggregation of the Janus nanoparticles was observed at low pH values, with the formation of stable clusters of approximately 2-4 times the initial size of the particles. Cluster formation was reversed, and individually dispersed nanoparticles recovered, by restoring the pH to high values. At intermediate pH values, PSSNa Janus nanoparticles showed moderate clustering, while PDMAEMA Janus nanoparticles aggregated uncontrollably due to dipolar interactions. The size of the stable clusters could be controlled by increasing the molecular weight of the grafted polymer, or by decreasing the magnetic nanoparticle surface availability for grafting, both of which yielded larger cluster sizes. The addition of small amounts of PAA-coated magnetic nanoparticles to the Janus nanoparticle suspension resulted in a further increase in the final cluster size. Monte Carlo simulation results compared favorably with experimental observations and showed the formation of small, elongated clusters similar in structure to those observed in cryo-TEM images.

Abstract:We use soft x-ray vector-ptychographic tomography to determine the three-dimensional magnetization field in superparamagnetic nanoparticles self-assembled at the liquid-liquid interface and reveal the magnetic order induced by layered structure. The spins in individual nanoparticles become more aligned with increasing number of layers, resulting in a larger net magnetization. Our experimental results show a magnetic short-range order in the monolayer due to the proliferation of thermally induced magnetic vortices and a magnetic long-range order in the bilayer and trilayer, stemming from the strengthened dipolar interactions that effectively suppress thermal fluctuations. We also observe a screening effect of magnetic vortices and the attractive interaction between the magnetic vortices with opposite topological charges. Our work demonstrates the crucial role of layered structure in shaping the magnetization of nanoparticle assemblies, providing new opportunities to modulate these properties through strategic layer engineering.

Abstract:The magnetic-field-induced assembly of magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) provides a unique and flexible strategy in the design and the fabrication of functional nanostructures and devices. We have investigated the field-driven self-assembly of core-shell magnetite NPs dispersed in toluene by means of in situ small angle neutron scattering (SANS). The form factor of the core-shell NPs was characterized and analyzed using SANS with polarized neutrons. Large-scale aggregation of magnetite NPs has formed above 0.02 T as indicated by very-small angle neutron scattering measurements. Three-dimensional long-range ordered superlattice of magnetite NPs was revealed under the application of moderate magnetic field. The crystal structure of the superlattice has been identified as a face-centered cubic one.

Orientational ordering and assembly of silica–nickel Janus particles in a magnetic field

Abstract:The orientation ordering and assembly behavior of silica–nickel Janus particles in a static external magnetic field were probed by ultra small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS). Even in a weak applied field, the net magnetic moments of the individual particles aligned in the direction of the field, as indicated by the anisotropy in the recorded USAXS patterns. X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) measurements on these suspensions revealed that the corresponding particle dynamics are primarily Brownian diffusion [Zinn, Sharpnack & Narayanan (2023). Soft Matter , 19 , 2311–2318]. At higher fields, the magnetic forces led to chain-like configurations of particles, as indicated by an additional feature in the USAXS pattern. A theoretical framework is provided for the quantitative interpretation of the observed anisotropic scattering diagrams and the corresponding degree of orientation. No anisotropy was detected when the magnetic field was applied along the beam direction, which is also replicated by the model. The method presented here could be useful for the interpretation of oriented scattering patterns from a wide variety of particulate systems. The combination of USAXS and XPCS is a powerful approach for investigating asymmetric colloidal particles in external fields.

Abstract:Self-assembly is a critical process that can greatly expand the existing structures and lead to new functionality of nanoparticle systems. Multicomponent superstructures self-assembled from nanocrystals have shown promise as multifunctional materials for various applications. Despite recent progress in assembly of homogeneous nanocrystals, synthesis and self-assembly of Janus nanocrystals with contrasting surface chemistry remains a significant challenge. Herein, we designed a novel Janus nanocrystal platform to control the self-assembly of nanoparticles in aqueous solutions by balancing the hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties. A series of superstructures have been assembled by systematically varying the Janus balance and assembly conditions. Janus Au-Fe3O4 dumbbell nanocrystals (<20 nm) were synthesized with the hydrophobic ligands coated on the Au lobe and negatively charged hydrophilic ligands coated on the Fe3O4 lobe. We systematically fine-tune the lobe size ratio, surface coating, external conditions, and even additional growth of Au nanocrystal domains on the Au lobe of dumbbell nanoparticles (Au-Au-Fe3O4) to harvest self-assembly structures including clusters, chains, vesicles, and capsules. It was discovered that in all these assemblies the hydrophobic Au lobes preferred to stay together. In addition, these superstructures clearly demonstrated different levels of enhanced surface plasmon resonance that is directly correlated with the Au coupling in the assembly structure. The strong interparticle plasmonic coupling displayed a red-shift in surface plasmon resonance, with larger structures formed by Au-Au-Fe3O4 assembly extending into the near-infrared region. Self-assembly of Janus dumbbell nanocrystals can also be reversible under different pH values. The biphasic Janus dumbbell nanocrystals offer a platform for studying the novel interparticle coupling and open up opportunities in applications including sensing, disease diagnoses, and therapy.

Abstract:: Understanding the correlations between magnetic nanoparticles is important for nanotechnologies, such as high-density magnetic recording and biomedical applications, where functionalized magnetic particles are used as contrast agents and for drug delivery. The ability to control the magnetic state of individual particles depends on the good knowledge of magnetic correlations between particles when assembled. Inaccessible via standard magnetometry techniques, nanoscale magnetic ordering in self-assemblies of Fe3O4 nanoparticles is here unveiled via x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS). Measured throughout the magnetization process, the XRMS signal reveals size-dependent inter-particle magnetic correlations. Smaller (5 nm) particles show little magnetic correlation, even when tightly close-packed, yielding to mostly magnetic disorder in the absence of external field, which is characteristic of superparamagnetic behavior. In contrast, larger (11 nm) particles tend to be strongly correlated, yielding a mix of magnetic orders including ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic orders. These strong magnetic correlations are present even when the particles are sparsely distributed.

Abstract:The self-assembly of anisotropic nanoparticles (ANPs) possesses a wide array of potential applications in various fields, ranging from nanotechnology to material science. Despite intense research of the thermodynamic self-assembly of ANPs, elucidating their nonequilibrium behaviors under confinement still remains an urgent issue. Here, by performing simulation and theoretical justification, we present for the first time a study of the shear-induced behaviors of Janus spheres (the most elementary ANPs) confined in two-dimensional space. Our results demonstrate that the collective effects of shear and bonding structures can give rise to reshaped cluster configurations, featured by the chiral transition of clusters. Scaling analysis and numerical modeling are performed to quantitatively capture the assembling kinetics of dispersed Janus spheres, thereby suggesting an exotic way to bridge the gap between anisotropic and isotropic particles. The findings highlight confinement and shearing engineering as a versatile strategy to tailor the superstructures formed by ANPs toward unique properties.

Abstract:Hierarchically structured magnetic single hole hollow spheres (MSHS) have been successfully obtained via a facile self-assembly strategy. This methodology allows the double emulsions generated via the combined effect of self-emulsification and phase separation to provide confinement for directing the self-assembly of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). The resulting MSHS fully capitalize on both the multifunctional properties of MNPs and container features of single-hole hollow spheres. Moreover, the magnetic properties showed obvious improvement and can be tuned by modulating the assembled structure. Thus, MSHS can be used as a smart platform with multiple functionalities including image contrast enhancement, selective encapsulation for biomacromolecules, on-demand release, and magnetically guided transport. This strategy is very promising in the design of hierarchically structured assemblies for desired applications in biomedicine and other fields.

Abstract:We established a simple method for preparing Janus particles displaying different structural colors using submicron-sized fine silica particles and magnetic nanoparticles composed of Fe3O4. A w/o emulsion is prepared by vortex-stirring a mixed aqueous solution of suspended fine silica particles and magnetic nanoparticles and of hexadecane containing an emulsifier. Subsequent drying of the emulsion on a hot plate using a magnetic stirrer provides a polydisperse particle aggregate displaying two different structural colors according to the ratio of the amount of fine silica particles to the amount of magnetic nanoparticles. This polydisperse particle aggregate can be converted into monodisperse particles simply by using a sieve made of stainless steel. In the presence of a magnet, the monodisperse Janus particles can change their orientation and can switch between two different structural colors.

Abstract:Recent development in assembling nanoparticles as building blocks into macroscopic functional structures or devices to harness the size-dependent properties of individual particles is an exciting new direction. Here, it is demonstrated that well-dispersed silica- encapsulated superparamagnetic FePt nanoparticles in solution can be assembled into high-quality, needle- or rod-shaped solid-state supercrystals by applying inhomogeneous external magnetic field together with controlled evaporation. By use of an aggregation model based on the population balance equation technique, this charactersitic morphology of the magnetic asembled crystals can be successfully derived.

Abstract:Dynamic self-assembly, especially self-assembly under magnetic field, is vital not only for its marvelous phenomenon but also for its mechanisms. Revealing the underlying mechanisms is crucial for a deeper understanding of self-assembly. In this paper, several magnetic induced self-assembly experiments by using the mixed magnetic multiphase fluids comprised of silica microspheres were carried out. The relations of the strength of external magnetic field, the inverse magnetorheological effect, and the structures of self-assembled particles were investigated. In addition, a momentum-exchanged immersed boundary-based lattice Boltzmann method (MEIB-LBM) for modeling multi-physical coupling multiphase flows was employed to numerically study the magnetic induced self-assembly process in detail. The present work showed that the external magnetic field can be used to control the form of self-assembly of nonmagnetic microparticles in a chain-like structure, and the self-assembly process can be classified into four stages with magnetic hysteresis, magnetization of nonmagnetic microparticles, self-assembly in chain-like structures, and the stable chain state. The combination of experimental and numerical results could offer a method to control the self-assembled nonmagnetic microparticles, which can provide the technical and theoretical support for the design and fabrication of micro/nanomaterials.

Abstract:Co-assembly of two types of nanocrystals (NCs) into binary NC superlattices (BNSLs) provides a solution-based, inexpensive way to create novel metamaterials with rationally designed properties. The fundamental challenge is to probe and understand the nature and extent of complex interparticle interactions present in BNSLs, which can lead to collective properties that differ from their dispersed constituents or phase-separated counterparts. Here, we report the growth and magnetic characterization of large-area (similar to 1 cm(2)) BNSL membranes self-assembled from distinct magnetic NCs at the liquid air interface. The resulting BNSL membranes exhibit a single-phase-like magnetization alignment process, which is not observed in the phase-separated NC mixtures having the same stoichiometry. This single-phase-like magnetic behavior is attributed to the collective interparticle dipolar interactions between two NC components in BNSLs, corroborated by calculation of the random dipolar fields as well as Monte Carlo simulation, The collective magnetic properties are demonstrated in magnetic BNSL membranes having different structures (stoichiometry) and different NC combinations.

Abstract:We show the spontaneous self‐assembly of magnetic nanoparticles into chains and microfibers. They are formed at the top surface of the shield of a magnetron sputter head. There is an increasing interest in magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and self‐assembled MNP chains for applications in biomedicine, catalysis, and other technologically relevant applications. In this work, we report the spontaneous self‐assembly of MNPs at the top surface of the shield of a magnetron sputter head. The resulting nanostructures consisted of clustered nanoscale chains arranged in highly oriented microfibers, with lengths of micrometer order and diameters ranging from 20 to 600 nm. The intense magnetic field gradient around the sputter magnetron's head is the driving force of the self‐assembly process, also trapping species that would otherwise be lost in the carrier gas flow.

Abstract:The study of the magnetism of tightly arranged nitronyl nitroxide (NN) radicals via Au-S self-assembly is interesting. In this study, a series of radicals (S-NN, D-NN, BS-NN, BD-NN) along with two types of nanomaterials (S-NPs, D-NPs) were synthesized. NN was chosen for the magnetic units. Their structures have been successfully synthesized and analyzed. The spin magnetic properties were characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurement. The analysis revealed that the self-assembled NN formed via Au-S bonds exhibits high packing density. Furthermore, it was gratifying to observe that the AuNPs exhibit ferromagnetism after the surface modification by NN. This results in strong ferromagnetic exchange interactions of S-NPs and D-NPs : J S-NPs = +279.715 K and J D-NPs = +254.913 K, respectively.
Reinforcing Supramolecular Bonding with Magnetic Dipole Interactions to Assemble Dynamic Nanoparticle Superlattices

Abstract:Assembling superparamagnetic particles into ordered lattices is an attractive means of generating new magnetically responsive materials, and is commonly achieved by tailoring interparticle interactions as a function of the ligand coating. However, the inherent linkage between the collective magnetic behavior of particle arrays and the assembly processes used to generate them complicates efforts to understand and control material synthesis. Here, we use a synergistic combination of a chemical force (hydrogen bonding) and magnetic dipole coupling to assemble polymer-brush coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles, where the relative strengths of these interactions can be tuned to reinforce one another and stabilize the resulting superlattice phases. We find that we can precisely control both the dipole-dipole coupling between nanoparticles and the strength of the ligand-ligand interactions by modifying the interparticle spacing through changes to the polymer spacer between the hydrogen bonding groups and the nanoparticles' surface. This results in modulation of the materials' blocking temperature, as well as the stabilization of a unique superlattice phase that only exists when magnetic coupling between particles is present. Using magnetic interactions to affect nanoparticle assembly in conjunction with ligand-mediated interparticle interactions expands the potential for synthesizing predictable and controllable nanoparticle-based magnetic composites.

Abstract:The deliberate control over the spatial arrangement of nanostructures is the desired goal for many applications as e.g. in data storage, plasmonics or sensor arrays. Here we present a novel method to assist the self-assembly process of magnetic nanoparticles. The method makes use of nanostructured aluminum templates obtained after anodization of aluminum disks and the subsequent growth and removal of the newly formed alumina layer, resulting in a regular honeycomb type array of hexagonally shaped valleys. The iron oxide nanoparticles, 20 nm in diameter, are spin coated onto the nanostructured templates. Depending on the size, each hexagon site can host up to 30 nanoparticles. These nanoparticles form clusters of different arrangements within the valleys, such as collars, chains, and hexagonally closed islands. Ultimately, it is possible to isolate individual nanoparticles. The strengths of magnetic interaction between particles in a cluster is probed using the memory effect known from the coupled state in superspin glass systems.
