Abstract:Tremendous effort has been dedicated to the improvement of conductivity of GO by reduction. [ 23,32 ] However, less attention is paid to tuning the work function of GO. Recently, Liu et al. designed and developed a sulfated GO with −OSO 3 H groups attached to the carbon basal plane of reduced GO surrounded with edge-functionalized −COOH groups. The work function of sulfated GO is slightly increased from 4.7 eV of GO to 4.8 eV, which matches the HOMO of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), leading to the better performance of P3HT:(6,6)-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC 61 BM) PSCs. [ 33 ] We have also demonstrated that the work function of GO can be improved by O 2 plasma treatment. The PCE of P3HT:PC 61 BM PSCs can be improved signifi cantly when the O 2 plasma treated GO with higher work function is used as AILs. [ 34 ] In this work, the work function of GO is continuously tuned to 5.21 eV by photochemical chlorination. The tuned work function of the chlorinated GO (Cl-GO) has signifi cant impact on the performance of PSCs, and the PCE of PSCs have been greatly enhanced when the work function of Cl-GO is aligned closely with the HOMO of polymer donors. Figure 1 a illustrates the chemical structure of Cl-GO. Figure 1 b shows atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of single-layer Cl-GO sheets on a mica substrate. Both the morphology and the thickness of single-layer Cl-GO sheets (≈1.0 nm) are similar to that of single-layer GO sheets, and the root mean square (RMS) roughness of Cl-GO on indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates is 1.79 nm, which is similar to 1.55 nm of GO (Supporting Information Figure S1). Scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKPM) was used to characterize the work functions of the various samples (Supporting Information Figure S2 and Table S1). The work function of Cl-GO sheets increased with UV treatment from 0 to 2 min. Additionally, the work function is measured to be 5.21 eV for the sample treated with UV-light for 2 min (Figure 1 c), which is much higher than the average work function of GO (4.96 eV) and that of PEDOT:PSS (4.97 eV). The work function of Cl-GO remains at ≈5.20 eV for further increased treatment times. The high work function of Cl-GO was also found to be very stable and no obvious change was observed for more than 450 h when it was stored in a glove box (Figure 1 d). The composition and bonding type of the Cl-GO were characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). High-resolution C 1s spectra of GO and Cl-GO are shown in Supporting Information Figure S3a and Figure 1 e, respectively. The C 1s spectrum of the GO fi lm reveals that there are four different peaks centered at 284.8, 286.2, 287.0 and 289.0 eV, corresponding to C-C, C-OH, C-O-C and COOH groups, respectively. [ 1–6 ] Power conversion effi ciencies (PCE) of PSCs have increased continuously over the last few years and have exceeded 9% at the single cell level.
