Abstract:A multivariate public key cryptosystem (MPKCs for short) have a set of (usually) quadratic polynomials over a finite field as its public map. Its main security assumption is backed by the NP-hardness of the problem to solve nonlinear equations over a finite field. This family is considered as one of the major families of PKCs that could resist potentially even the powerful quantum computers of the future. There has been fast and intensive development in Multivariate Public Key Cryptography in the last two decades. Some constructions are not as secure as was claimed initially, but others are still viable. The paper gives an overview of multivariate public key cryptography and discusses the current status of the research in this area.

Abstract:Although RSA is a very successful public key cryptosystem, efforts are under way to find alternative systems, which are computationally more efficient, and which would remain secure even when a big enough quantum computer becomes operational. Multivariable polynomials over a finite field have been used to build new public key cryptosystems. Some of these constructions are not as secure as was claimed initially, but others are still viable. The paper gives on overview over this field and discusses the status of many systems, which have been proposed in the last 20 years.

Abstract:Multivariate cryptography is one of the main candidates to guarantee the security of communication in the presence of quantum computers. While there exist a large number of secure and efficient multivariate signature schemes, the number of practical multivariate encryption schemes is somewhat limited. In this paper we present our results on creating a new multivariate encryption scheme, which is an extension of the original Simple Matrix encryption scheme of PQCrypto 2013. Our scheme allows fast en- and decryption and resists all known attacks against multivariate cryptosystems. Furthermore, we present a new idea to solve the decryption failure problem of the original Simple Matrix encryption scheme. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In 1989, Tsujii, Fujioka, and Hirayama proposed a family of multivariate public key cryptosystems, where the public key is given as a set of multivariate rational functions of degree 4. These cryptosystems are constructed via composition of two quadratic rational maps. In this paper, we present the cryptanalysis of this family of cryptosystems. The key point of our attack is to transform a problem of decomposition of two rational maps into a problem of decomposition of two polynomial maps. We develop a new improved 2R decomposition method and other new techniques, which allows us to find an equivalent decomposition of the rational maps to break the system completely. For the example suggested for practical applications, it is very fast to derive an equivalent private key, and it requires only a few seconds on a standard PC.

Abstract:Multivariate Cryptography is one of the main candidates for Post-quantum Cryptography. Multivariate schemes are usually constructed by applying two secret affine invertible transformations $\mathcal S,\mathcal T$ to a set of multivariate polynomials $\mathcal{F}$ (often quadratic). The secret polynomials $\mathcal{F}$ posses a trapdoor that allows the legitimate user to find a solution of the corresponding system, while the public polynomials $\mathcal G=\mathcal S\circ\mathcal F\circ\mathcal T$ look like random polynomials. The polynomials $\mathcal G$ and $\mathcal F$ are said to be affine equivalent. In this article, we present a more general way of constructing a multivariate scheme by considering the CCZ equivalence, which has been introduced and studied in the context of vectorial Boolean functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed an idea to construct a general multivariate public key cryptographic (MPKC) scheme based on a user's identity. In our construction, each user is distributed a unique identity by the key distribution center (KDC) and we use this key to generate user's private keys. Thereafter, we use these private keys to produce the corresponding public key. This method can make key generating process easier so that the public key will reduce from dozens of Kilobyte to several bits. We then use our general scheme to construct practical identity-based signature schemes named ID-UOV and ID-Rainbow based on two well-known and promising MPKC signature schemes, respectively. Finally, we present the security analysis and give experiments for all of our proposed schemes and the baseline schemes. Comparison shows that our schemes are both efficient and practical.

Abstract:Multivariate Cryptography, as one of the main candidates for establishing post-quantum cryptosystems, provides strong, efficient and well-understood digital signature schemes such as UOV, Rainbow, and Gui. While Gui provides very short signatures, it is, for efficiency reasons, restricted to very small finite fields, which makes it hard to scale it to higher levels of security and leads to large key sizes.

Abstract:The RSA cryptosystem has been a cornerstone of modern public key infrastructure; however, recent advancements in quantum computing and theoretical mathematics pose significant risks to its security. The advent of fully operational quantum computers could enable the execution of Shor’s algorithm, which efficiently factors large integers and undermines the security of RSA and other cryptographic systems reliant on discrete logarithms. While Grover’s algorithm presents a comparatively lesser threat to symmetric encryption, it still accelerates key search processes, creating potential vulnerabilities. In light of these challenges, there has been an intensified focus on developing quantum-resistant cryptography. Current research is exploring cryptographic techniques based on error-correcting codes, lattice structures, and multivariate public key systems, all of which leverage the complexity of NP-hard problems, such as solving multivariate quadratic equations, to ensure security in a post-quantum landscape. This paper reviews the latest advancements in quantum-resistant encryption methods, with particular attention to the development of robust trapdoor functions. It also provides a detailed analysis of prominent multivariate cryptosystems, including the Matsumoto–Imai, Oil and Vinegar, and Polly Cracker schemes, alongside recent progress in lattice-based systems such as Kyber and Crystals-DILITHIUM, which are currently under evaluation by NIST for potential standardization. As the capabilities of quantum computing continue to expand, the need for innovative cryptographic solutions to secure digital communications becomes increasingly critical.

Abstract:Let X = (x 1,.;x n ) and Y = (y 1,.;y m ) be a pair of corresponding plaintext and ciphertext for a cryptosystem. We define an embedded surface of this cryptosystem as any polynomial equation: which is satisfied by all such pairs. In this paper, we present a new attack on the multivariate public key cryptosystems from Diophantine equations developed by Gao and Heindl by using the embedded surfaces associated to this family of multivariate cryptosystems. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

We exhibit two new linear-algebra related cryptanalysis for current schemes that relates to flawed choices of system para meters in current schemes. Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to give an overview over the theory of abelian varieties, with main focus on Jacobian varieties of curves reaching from well-known results till to latest developments and their usage in cryptography. In the first part we provide the necessary mathematical background on abelian varieties, their torsion points, Honda-Tate theory, Galois representations, with emphasis on Jacobian varieties and hyperelliptic Jacobians. In the second part we focus on applications of abelian varieties on cryptography and treating separately, elliptic curve cryptography, genus 2 and 3 cryptography, including Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange, index calculus in Picard groups, isogenies of Jacobians via correspondences and applications to discrete logarithms. Several open problems and new directions are suggested.

Abstract:sflash had recently been broken by Dubois, Stern, Shamir, etc., using a differential attack on the public key. The C∗− signature schemes are hence no longer practical. In this paper, we will study the new attack from the point view of symmetry, then (1) present a simple concept (projection) to modify several multivariate schemes to resist the new attacks; (2) demonstrate with practical examples that this simple method could work well; and (3) show that the same discussion of attack-and-defence applies to other big-field multivariates. The speed of encryption schemes is not affected, and we can still have a big-field multivariate signatures resisting the new differential attacks with speeds comparable to sflash.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new central trapdoor for multivariate quadratic (MQ) public-key cryptosystems that allows for encryption, in contrast to time-tested MQ primitives such as Unbalanced Oil and Vinegar or Hidden Field Equations which only allow for signatures. Our construction is a mixed-field scheme that exploits the commutativity of the extension field to dramatically reduce the complexity of the extension field polynomial implicitly present in the public key. However, this reduction can only be performed by the user who knows concise descriptions of two simple polynomials, which constitute the private key. After applying this transformation, the plaintext can be recovered by solving a linear system. We use the minus and projection modifiers to inoculate our scheme against known attacks. A straightforward C++ implementation confirms the efficient operation of the public key algorithms.

Abstract:There are several attempts to build asymmetric pubic key encryption schemes based on multivariate polynomials of degree two over a finite field. However, most of them are insecure. The common defect in many of them comes from the fact that certain quadratic forms associated with their central maps have low rank, which makes them vulnerable to the MinRank attack. We propose a new simple and efficient multivariate pubic key encryption scheme based on matrix multiplication, which does not have such a low rank property. The new scheme will be called Simple Matrix Scheme or ABC in short. We also propose some parameters for practical and secure implementation.

Abstract:The Rainbow signature scheme, proposed by Ding and Schmidt in 2005, is one of the oldest and most studied signature schemes in multidimensional cryptography. The Rainbow, based on the unbalanced Oil and Vinegar signature scheme, has the necessary cryptocurrency since 1999 with the right parameters. Interest in multivariate cryptography has increased in the last decade, as it is considered to be quantum-stable. Cryptanalysis of the Rainbow and its predecessors was actively developed in the early 2000s. Attacks from this era include the MinRank attack, the HighRank attack, the Bill-Gilbert attack, the UOV agreement attack, and the Rainbow bandwidth attack. After 2008, cryptanalysis seemed to have stopped, until the Rainbow's participation in the NIST PQC project, which motivated the continuation of cryptanalysis. During the second round of NIST, Bardett and others proposed a new algorithm for solving the MinRank problem. This dramatically increased the effectiveness of MinRank's attack, although not enough to threaten the parameters provided to NIST. A less memory-intensive version of this algorithm was suggested by Baena et al. Perlner and Smith-Tone analyzed the Rainbow bandwidth attack in depth, which showed that the attack was more effective than previously thought. This prompted the Rainbow team to increase slightly the parameters for the third round. During the third round, Bellens introduced a new attack that reduced the Rainbow's security by 220 times for SL 1. The Rainbow team claimed that despite the new attacks, the Rainbow's parameters still met NIST requirement. The purpose of this article is to present two new (partial) key recovery attacks on multivariate cryptographic transformations using rank systems.

Beginning with foundational concepts, it explores encryption, decryption, ciphers, and keys, spanning symmetric and asymmetric cryptography. Historical context unfolds, tracing cryptography from ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs to Julius Caesar's cipher. The study then transitions to contemporary subjects. Elliptic Curves and Cryptography are investigated, showcasing their significance in secure communication, demonstrating ECC key exchange and AES-GCM encryption using python and Comparative analysis of ECC, RSA, and Diffie-Hellman sheds light on their performance. Zero-Knowledge Proofs are introduced as tools for privacy-preserving verification followed by an exploration of various Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP) protocols. By presenting practical implementation examples using Python, the paper illustrates how these proofs can be applied in real-world scenarios. Random Number Generation is examined and distinction between pseudorandom number generators (PRNGs) and cryptographically secure PRNGs (CSPRNGs) is emphasized conducting a thorough comparative analysis of PRNGs and CSPRNGs, considering factors like correlation, independence, periodicity, and entropy. Furthermore, the section evaluates the performance of different random number generation techniques. Fully Homomorphic Encryption emerges as a groundbreaking concept, discussing its mathematical properties, practical implementation, parameter selection, and optimization techniques enabling computation on encrypted data. Cryptographic Secret Sharing Schemes are explored for secure information distribution. The paper concludes by delving into the Chinese Remainder Theorem's applications within modern cryptographic protocols, particularly in RSA decryption and the integration factorization process of the RSA public key cryptosystem. It also provides a comprehensive overview of the theoretical foundations of primality testing, a pivotal aspect of the RSA algorithm. Abstract:The number of equivalent keys in multivariate cryptosystem is closely related to the scheme security. This study analyzes the structure of the private key space in some multivariate schemes. The result gives the lower bounds on the number of equivalent keys of some variants of the hidden field equation (HFE) scheme including plus, minus-plus, embedding, and internal perturbation. This method estimates the number of invertible transformations which maintain the form of the central map invariant. Furthermore, a formal proof shows that the two modifications of fixing and embedding are equivalent in security analyses of multivariate schemes. Also this paper corrects previous proofs in Wolf's work on the number of equivalent keys in HFEv, the unbalanced oil and vinegar (UOV) scheme, and the stepwise triangular systems (STS).

Abstract:Information security is a fundamental and urgent issue in the digital transformation era. Cryptographic techniques and digital signatures have been applied to protect and authenticate relevant information. However, with the advent of quantum computers and quantum algorithms, classical cryptographic techniques have been in danger of collapsing because quantum computers can solve complex problems in polynomial time. Stemming from that risk, researchers worldwide have stepped up research on post-quantum algorithms to resist attack by quantum computers. In this review paper, we survey studies in recent years on post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and provide statistics on the number and content of publications, including a literature overview, detailed explanations of the most common methods so far, current implementation status, implementation comparisons, and discussion on future work. These studies focused on essential public cryptography techniques and digital signature schemes, and the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) launched a competition to select the best candidate for the expected standard. Recent studies have practically implemented the public key encryption/key encapsulation mechanism (PKE/KEM) and digital signature schemes on different hardware platforms and applied various optimization measures based on other criteria. Along with the increasing number of scientific publications, the recent trend of PQC research is increasingly evident and is the general trend in the cryptography industry. The movement opens up a promising avenue for researchers in public key cryptography and digital signatures, especially on algorithms selected by NIST.
