Abstract:We study Ericksen--Leslie's hyperbolic incompressible liquid crystal model. Under some constraints on the Leslie coefficients which ensure the basic energy law is dissipative, we prove the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of the classical solution to the system with finite initial energy. Furthermore, with an additional assumption on the coefficients which provides a damping effect, and the smallness of the initial energy, the unique global classical solution can be established.

Abstract:This paper concerns the uniqueness of weak solutions to the Cauchy problem to the Ericksen–Leslie system of liquid crystal models in [Formula: see text], with both general Leslie stress tensors and general Oseen–Frank density. It is shown here that such a system admits a unique weak solution provided that the Frank coefficients are close to some positive constant. One of the main ideas of our proof is to perform suitable energy estimates at the level one order lower than the natural basic energy estimates for the Ericksen–Leslie system.

Abstract: This article is devoted to the simplified Ericksen-Leslie's hyperbolic system for incompressible liquid crystal model in two spatial dimensions, which is a nonlinear coupling of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with wave map to circle $\mathbb{S}^1$. The structure of second-order material derivative is exploited in order to close the energy estimates. We established the almost global well-posedness for small and smooth initial data near the constant equilibrium. Our proof relies on the idea of vector-field method and ghost weight method.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the local well-posedness of strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of the density-dependent liquid crystal system, with general Leslie stress tensor, in $\mathbb {R}^3$. By using a biharmonic regularization argument, and making full use of the property of the intrinsic cancellation of the regularized system, we are able to overcome the difficulties caused by the high-order coupling terms, establish some appropriate a priori estimates, which are independent of the regularized parameter, and consequently obtain a strong solution to the original liquid crystal system, by letting the regularization parameter go to zero. The main advantage of the biharmonic regularization is that it does not destroy the property of the intrinsic cancellation of the original system.

Abstract:We establish the following well-posedness results on Ericksen-Leslieu0027s parabolic-hyperbolic liquid crystal model: 1, if the dissipation coefficients beta = mu_4 - 4 mu_6 u003e 0, and the size of the initial energy E^{in} is small enough, then the life span of the solution is at least -O(ln E^{in}); 2, for the special case that the coefficients mu_1 = mu_2 = mu_3 = mu_5 = mu_6 = 0, for which the model is the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the wave map from mathbb{R}^n to mathbb{S}^2, the same existence result holds but without the smallness restriction on the size of the initial data; 3, with further constraints on the coefficients, namely alpha = mu_4 - 4 mu_6 - tfrac{ (|lambda_1| - 7 lambda_2)^2 }{eta} - tfrac{ 2 ( 7 |lambda_1| - 2lambda_2 )^2 }{ |lambda_1| } u003e 0 and mu_2 u003c mu_3, the global classical solution with small initial data can be established. A relation between the Lagrangian multiplier and the geometric constraint |d|=1 plays a key role in the proof.

Luo, On well-posedness of Ericsen–Leslie’s hyperbolic incompressible liquid crystal model, preprint (2017), arXiv:1709.06370v1 ] and some techniques from compressible Navier–Stokes equations, we first prove the local-in-time existence of the classical solution to the system with finite initial energy, under some natural constraints on the Leslie coefficients which ensure that the basic energy law is dissipative. Furthermore, with an additional assumption on the coefficients which provides a damping effect, and the smallness of the initial energy, the existence of global solution can be established.

Abstract:In this paper, we first establish the global well-posedness of strong solutions of the simplified Ericksen-Leslie model for nonhomogeneous incompressible nematic liquid crystal flows in dimensions two, if the initial data satisfies some smallness condition. It is worth pointing out that the initial density is allowed to contain vacuum states and the initial velocity can be arbitrarily large. Next, we present a Serrin's type criterion, depending only on del d, for the breakdown of local strong solutions. As a byproduct, the global strong solutions with large initial data are obtained, provided the macroscopic molecular orientation of the liquid crystal materials satisfies a natural geometric angle condition (cf. [19]).

Abstract:We study dissipative solutions to a 3D simplified hyperbolic Ericksen-Leslie system for liquid crystals with Ginzburg-Landau approximation. First, we establish a weak-strong stability principle, which leads to a suitable notion of dissipative solutions to the hyperbolic Ericksen-Leslie system. Then, we introduce a regularized system to approximate the original system, for which we can prove the existence of global-in-time weak solutions. Finally, we prove that there is at least one dissipative solution for this simplified hyperbolic Ericksen-Leslie system.

Abstract:Ericksen and Leslie proposed a hydrodynamic model for liquid crystals in the format of conservation laws in the 1960s. Their original model includes inertial and compressibility effects, which makes the model a coupled parabolic–hyperbolic system. In this paper we build up the connection between the compressible and incompressible parabolic–hyperbolic liquid crystal model in the framework of classical solutions. We first derive the scaled Ericksen–Leslie system with dimensionless numbers, including Mach, Reynolds, and Ericksen numbers. In particular, we introduce the so-called inertial constant χ which characterizes the inertial effect of the liquid crystal molecular. Next, we establish the energy estimates uniform in the Mach number ϵ for both the compressible system and its time-derivative system with small data. Then, we pass to the limit ϵ→ 0 in the compressible system, so that we establish the global classical solution of the incompressible system by the compactness arguments. Moreover, we also obtain the convergence rates associated with L^2 -norm in the case of well-prepared initial data. This is the first result on the incompressible limit of the compressible parabolic–hyperbolic liquid crystal model and confirms the relations of different parabolic–hyperbolic liquid crystal model rigorously.

Abstract:This article is devoted to the two dimensional simplified Ericksen-Leslie's hyperbolic system for incompressible liquid crystal model, where the direction $d$ of liquid crystal molecules satisfies a wave map equation with an acoustical metric. We established the almost global well-posedness for small and smooth initial data near the constant equilibrium. Our proof relies on the idea of vector-field method and ghost weight method. There are two key ingredients in our proof: (i) Inspired by the gauge theory in Tataru \cite{Tataru,Tataru05}, we reformulate the wave map equation into a free wave equation with acoustical metric, where the nonlinearity is annihilated due to the geometry of $\mathbb S^1$; (ii) Motivated by the ghost weight method in Alinhac \cite{A01}, we introduce a new and important ``good unknown", the velocity $u$, which provides the additional dissipation $u/\langle t-r\rangle\in L^2_tL^2_x$. These new observations turn out to be extremely crucial in resolving the system in low dimensions.

Abstract:The work deals with the Ericksen-Leslie model for nematic liquid crystals on the whole space, the half-space and on exterior domains with smooth boundary. The crystal orientation is described by a unit vector that is a small perturbation of a fixed constant vector. We prove, through a combination of energy method with dispersive a priori estimates, a local existence and a global existence for small initial data by a contraction argument asking low regularity assumptions on the initial condition.

Abstract: In this paper we study the zero inertia limit that is from the hyperbolic to parabolic Ericksen-Leslie's liquid crystal flow. By introducing an initial layer and constructing an energy norm and energy dissipation functional depending on the solutions of the limiting system, we derive a global in time uniform energy bound to the remainder system under the small size of the initial data.

Abstract:We study the Ericksen–Leslie hyperbolic system for compressible liquid crystal model in three spatial dimensions. Global regularity and scattering for small and smooth initial data near equilibrium are proved for the case that the system is a nonlinear coupling of compressible Navier–Stokes equations with wave map to [Formula: see text]. The main strategy relies on an interplay between the control of high order energies and decay estimates, which is based on the idea inspired by the method of space-time resonances. Unlike the incompressible model, the different behaviors of the decay properties of the density and velocity field for compressible fluids at different frequencies play a key role, which is a particular feature of compressible model.
