Abstract:In the title polymeric complex, {[Zn(C8H4O4)(C3H4N2)(2)] .-3H(2)O}(n), the Zn-II atom is coordinated by two terephthalate dianions and two imidazole ligands in a distorted tetrahedral geometry. The terephthalate dianions are located on inversion centres and bridge neighbouring Zn-II atoms to form zigzag polymeric complex chains. The interplanar distance of 3.212 (17) Angstrom between parallel imidazole rings of adjacent polymeric chains suggests the existence of pi-pi stacking.

Abstract:The assembly of cyclopentazolate (cyclo-N5−) anions with counterions has thrived in recent years owing to the potential of cyclo-N5− anions as high energy density materials. However, high-valence metal pentazolates are still rare, thus hindering the recognition of the structures and properties of new metal pentazolates. Herein, two trivalent metal pentazolate hydrates, Fe(H2O)6(N5)3·9H2O (1) and Al(H2O)6(N5)3·9H2O (2), were synthesized by a metathesis reaction. The compounds were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. The cyclo-N5− anion decomposition temperature in compound 2 is 141.4 °C, which means it has the highest thermal stability among all cyclo-N5−-based materials reported so far. Single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed that there are no direct σ-bonds between the metal centers and cyclo-N5− anions in the crystal lattices of 1 and 2. Hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking interactions in the crystal lattices of 1 and 2 were evaluated. The proportion of hydrogen bonds is more than 75%. Four kinds of hydrogen bond ring motifs are formed via O–H⋯N and O–H⋯O interactions: tetrameric R44(10), pentameric R55(12) and R55(17), and nonameric R99(21) motifs. This study deepens our understanding of the structure of cyclo-N5−-based complexes and is expected to contribute to the further development of pentazole chemistry.

Abstract:Stabilizing pentazolate anion in solid compounds is a challenging and important approach toward making environmentally friendly high energy density materials. Using a constrained crystal structure search method and rigorous bond analysis, we predicted the metastable structures of Al (N5)3 and Mg(N5)2. In contrast to common wisdom, our work demonstrates that metals, especially the multivalent metals such as Al and Mg, can stabilize pentazolate anions by forming strong metal-N bonds. Both compounds are metastable at ambient pressure and temperatures as high as 600 K. The multivalent metals not only stabilize the pentazolate anions but also greatly enhance the energy density. The decomposition of Al(N5)3 or Mg(N5)2 can release an energy of 4.61 kJ/g or 3.10 kJ/g, respectively, making them promising candidates as high energy density materials.

Prediction of Novel Tetravalent Metal Pentazolate Salts with Anharmonic Effect

Abstract:In recent decades, pentazolate salts have gained considerable attention as high energy density materials (HEDMs). Using the machine-learning accelerated structure searching method, we predicted four pentazolate salts stabilized with tetravalent metals (Ti-N and Zr-N). Specifically, the ground state MN20 (M = Ti, Zr) adopts the space-group P4/mcc under ambient conditions, transforming into the I-4 phase at higher pressure. Moreover, the I-4-MN20 becomes energetically stable at moderate pressure (46.8 GPa for TiN20, 38.7 GPa for ZrN20). Anharmonic phonon spectrum calculations demonstrate the dynamic stabilities of these MN20 phases. Among them, the P4/mcc phase can be quenched to 0 GPa. Further ab-initio molecular dynamic simulations suggest that the N5 rings within these MN20 systems can still maintain integrity at finite temperatures. Calculations of the projected crystal orbital Hamilton population and reduced density gradient revealed their covalent and noncovalent interactions, respectively. The aromaticity of the N5 ring was investigated by molecular orbital theory. Finally, we predicted that these MN20 compounds have very high energy densities and exhibit good detonation velocities and pressures, compared to the HMX explosive. These calculations enrich the family of pentazolate compounds and may also guide future experiments.

Abstract:Using a rigid ligand, 4-(5-(pyridin-4-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl) benzoic acid (HL), three metal(II)-organic frameworks (MOFs) formulated as M2L4 center dot 3H(2)O [M = Co (1), Cu (2), and Zn (3)] were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The three MOFs are isostructural except for different unsaturated coordinated metal(II) ions in the structures, and they display a uninodal two-dimensional layer with 4(4)-sql topology. Among the three complexes, the Co and Cu complexes can act as electrocatalysts for water splitting, and the Co complex shows better electrocatalytic activity. The present work shows that the species of metal(II) ions plays an important role in the electrocatalytic activity for water splitting. The three complexes show different thermal stabilities, UV-vis absorption characteristics, and photoluminescence properties.

Abstract:Reaction of MCl2·4H2O (M=Zn, Cd, Mn, Co, Ni ) with 2-(5-(pyrazin-2-yl)-2H-tetrazol-2-yl) acetic acid (Hpztza) yielded a set of new M(II)/pztza complexes, [Cd(pztza)2(H2O)6]·3H2O·(Hpztza) (1), [M(pztza)2(H2O)2] [M=Cd(2), Zn(7), Mn(9)], [Cd(pztza)2]·2(CH3OH) (3), [Co(pztza)2(H2O)2]·6H2O (4), [Co(pztza)(H2O)Cl] (6) and [M(pztza)2(H2O)2]·2H2O [M=Co(5), Zn(8), Ni(10)]. These compounds were structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Complex 1 featured a mononuclear structure, complexes 4, 5, 7, 8, 10 showed 1D chains and complexes 2, 3, 6, 9 displayed 2D layer structures. Furthermore, the luminescence properties of 1–10 were investigated at room temperature in the solid state.

Abstract:Polynitrogen compounds especially pentazolate anion complexes recently have attracted substantial attention due to their promising potential as high-energy-density materials. Here, using a machine-learning-accelerated crystal structure search method and first-principles calculations, we predict a new hybrid compound by inserting a large fraction of nitrogen into alkaline-earth metals. It is a new stoichiometric type MN10 (M = Be, Mg), which possesses a metal-centering octahedral pentazolate framework with the space group Fdd2. This type of ionic-like molecular crystal is found to be energetically more favorable than the mixtures of M3N2 or MN4 compounds and pure nitrogen and is possibly synthesized at relatively low pressures (around 12 GPa for MgN10). The ab initio molecular dynamics simulations show that they are metastable and can be quenched to ambient conditions once synthesized at high pressure. Abstract:Pentazolate (cyclo-N5–) salts are actively pursued energetic nitrogen-rich compounds due to their potential as propellants and explosives. An in-depth understanding of the stabilizing forces between cyclo-N5– anions and cations is important for designing cyclo-N5– salts and achieving cyclo-N5– salt conversions. Herein, the metathetical syntheses of cyclo-N5– salts (compounds 1–4) containing heterocyclic amino-based cations 3,6-diguanidino-1,2,4,5-tetrazine, 1-guanyl-1,2,4-triazolium, 3,7-diamino-7H-[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-b][1,2,4]triazol-2-ium, and 3,6,7-triamino-7H-[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-b][1,2,4]triazol-2-ium are reported. In addition, an energetic cocrystal (compound 5) composed of compound 4 with 3,6,7-triamino-7H-[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-b][1,2,4]triazole was synthesized using cocrystallization techniques. Crystal structures were investigated through geometrical and Hirshfeld analyses and theoretical calculations to reveal the contributions of hydrogen-bonding and π-stacking interactions in stabilizing the pentazolate salts. Compounds 1–3 are stabilized by strong hydrogen-bonding interactions and weak π-stacking interactions. The π-stacking interactions (cation–anion π+–π– contacts) are stronger in 4 and have an important role in promoting the stability of the salt. The binding energy of this π-stacking interaction (−82.4 kcal mol–1) slightly surpasses that of the robust N6-H6A···N1 interaction (−75.1 kcal mol–1). For cocrystal 5, the spatial arrangement of its structural framework differs from that of its precursor, compound 4. The molecular stabilization energy, which increases from −75.1 to −94.3 kcal mol–1 during the conversion of 4–5, primarily arises from strong π-stacking interactions. The strong covalent bonding and very weak noncovalent interactions with nonbonded overlaps coexist in these ionic-like structures. We find MN15 molecular structures are mechanically stable up to high temperature (similar to 1000 K) and ambient pressure. More importantly, these trivalent metal pentazolate salts have high detonation pressure (similar to 80 GPa) and velocity (similar to 12 km/s). Their detonation pressures exceeding that of TNT and HMX make them good candidates for high-brisance green energetic materials.

Abstract:Using a hemi-rigid multitopic ligand, 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyltrithio-triacetic acid (H3L), three metal(II)-complexes formulated as Pb2L(ox)(1/2)(H2O) (H(2)ox = oxalic acid) (1), Pb3L2(H2O)(2) (2) and Ni6L4(PEP)(6)(H2O)(12)center dot 7H(2)O (PEP = 4-(2-(pyridin-4-yl)ethyl)pyridine) (3) have been hydro(solvo)thermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 features a novel 4-nodal (3, 4, 5, 6)-connected 3D framework with an unusual (4(2).6(3).8)(4(2).6(8))(2)(4(2).6)(2)(4(3).6(11).8)(2) topology and complex 2 presents a 3-nodal (5, 6, 8)-connected 3D framework with a novel (3.4(4).5(3).6(2))(3(3).4(12).5(5).6(8))(3(5).4(7).5(3)) topology. Complexes 1 and 2 are hybrid Pb oxides, in which a 2D Pb-O-Pb layer is observed. Complex 3 shows a 3-nodal (3, 4)-connected 3D framework with a novel (6.7(2))(2)(6(4).7.8)(2)(7(4).8.10) topology. L3- displays different coordination modes in the three complexes. Complexes 1 and 2 show different UV absorptions, emission spectra, photoluminescence lifetimes and they are photocatalytically active for the decomposition of methyl orange (MO) under UV light irradiation.
A Series of Polyoxometalate-Based Metal–Bis(pyridyl-tetrazole) Complexes with High Electrocatalytic Activity for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline and Acid Media

Abstract:In this work, a succession of Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM)-based metal–bis(pyridyl-tetrazole) complexes, {Cu2(3-bptzp)3(H2O)4[SiW12O40]}·H2O (1), {Cu2(3-bptzpe)2(H2O)8[SiW12O40]}·4H2O (2), and {Cu2(3-bptzh)3(H2O)6[SiW12O40]} (3) (3-bptzp = 1,4-bis(5-(3-pyridyl)tetrazolyl)-butane; 3-bptzpe = 1,4-bis(5-(3-pyridyl)tetrazolyl)-pentane; 3-bptzh = 1,4-bis(5-(3-pyridyl)tetrazolyl)-hexane), were prepared and structurally characterized, which exhibited different architectures. The title complexes were used directly as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline and acidic media. The electrocatalytic activity for generating hydrogen was reinforced by the introduction of POMs. Complex 1 possesses the highest electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction with a low overpotential of 59.4 mV, achieving the current density of 10 mA·cm–2 in 0.1 M KOH. The different structures of the title complexes showed effects on the hydrogen evolution performance. Abstract:It is a challenge to increase the oxygen content with maintaining the mechanical sensitivity of the energetic materials. In this work, the 1D solvent-free energetic coordination polymer [Zn3(μ 3-OH)2(att)4]n 1 (Hatt = 4-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-thiol) was obtained in alkaline solution through a simple hydrothermal reaction. The X-ray crystallographic analysis indicates that there are two hydroxyl ions embedded in the three Zn(II) atoms through strong coordination bonds, which can provide a strategy for improving the oxygen content of energetic compounds. In addition, the energetic polymer 1 possesses high enthalpy of formation (2012.700 kJ·mol−1), low mechanical sensitivity (IS > 40 J, FS > 360 N) and relatively high decomposition temperature (235 °C). These results demonstrate that compound 1 has the potential application in insensitive energetic material.

Abstract:Based on the versatile ligand 3,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole (Hbpt) derived from an in situ metal/ligand reaction, a series of coordination compounds CoCl4(H(3)bpt)(H2O) (1), Cu(H(2)bpt)(2)(SO4)(2)(H2O)(6) (2), [Ag(bpt)](n) (3), [Co(Hbpt)(pa)](n) (4), [Co(Hbpt)(pda)](n) (5) and [Cu(Hbpt)(pda)(H2O)](n) (6) have been constructed (pa = phthalate, pda = 1,3-phenylenediacetate). The structures of these targeted complexes have been characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction techniques. Structural analysis reveals that Hbpt adopts versatile coordination modes to arrange the metal ions in O-D point, simple (4,4) layers and dinuclear core chains in 1-3, which are further extended via the benzenedicarboxylate connectors to give rise to a variety of coordination networks such as (4,4), (4(12) . 6(3)), (6(4) . 8(2)) topologies in 4-6. The supramolecular organization through hydrogen bonds is analyzed for these complexes and thermal stability of these crystalline materials has been explored by TG-DTG. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. It was found that complexes 1 and 2 are two-dimensional (2D) structures built from discrete complexes via the typical intermolecular interactions, and there was a closed loop built from the lattice water and carboxylate groups in 1 through intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Complex 3 exhibits three-dimensional (3D) structure with 5-connected bnn hexagonal BN topology. Abstract:Taking advantage of a basic ligand (BPCH=2,6-bis(4-pyridyl methylidene)cyclohexanone) and three acid ligands (H2TP=terephthalic acid, H2IP=isophthalic acid, H(3)TMA=1, 3, 5 - benzenetricarboxylic acid), seven metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) 1-7 have been achieved by using this acid-base mixed-ligand synthetic strategy. These complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectra, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. Diverse 3D structural characters of MOFs 1-3 or 2D structural characters of MOFs 4-7 have been observed. The fluorescence properties of these complexes have been explored, indicating that they had selectivity towards Fe3+ ions. Several complexes had shown certain performance for adsorbing dye molecules.

Abstract:Solvotherrnal reactions of V-shaped ligand 1,1'-(oxybis(1,4-phenylene))-bis(1H-1,2,4-triazole) (OPBT) with deprotonated phthalic acid (H(2)PA) or (1,1'-biphenyl)-4,4'-dicarboxylit acid (H(2)BDA) in the presence of transition metal nitrates in N,N-dimethylformamide/water (DMF/H2O) solvent system yielded five new, complexes: [Cu5(mu(3)-OH)(2)(OPBT)(2)(PA)(4)](n) (1), [Cd-2(QPBT)(PA)(2)](n)(2), {[Zn(OPBT)(PA)]center dot H2O}(n) (3), [Cd(mu(2)-H2O)(OPBT)-(BDA)](n) (4), and [Co(OPBT)(2)(BDA)](n) (5). Complexes 1 and 2 show two-dimensional (2D) layers based on one-dimensional (1D) infinite rod second building Units.(SBUs) of pentanudear Cu(II) or tetanuclear Cd(II) clusters with, OPBT ligands, which are further forrned into three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular frameworks by interlayer hydrogen bonding or pi...pi stadcifig, interactions,, respectively. Complex 3 displays a 1D chain, which is further extended intb a 3D supramolecular through C-H center dot center dot center dot pi and hydrogen bonding interactions: Complex 4 features a 2D layer With the sql topology, which is further formed into a 3D supramolecular framework by interlayer hydrogen bonds. Complex 5 possesses a 2131 2-fold interpenetrating-polyrotaxane structure (2D + 2D -> 2D) with the sql topology, Whidi is further extended into a 3D supramolecular framework through iriterlayer pi...pi stacking interactions. Furthermore, photoluminescent spectra of complexes 2-4 and UV-visible spectra of complex 5 have been studied. Subsequently, mesoporous Co3O4 is obtained by calcination: of complex 5. The as-made mesoporous Co3O4 is investigated for its application as supercapacitot electrode and energy storage material in 1, 2, and 3 M KOH electrolytes, respectively. The electrochemical analyses show that mesoporous Co3O4 exhibits a relatively higher specific capacitance of 285.4 F g(-1) at the current density of 0.5 A g(-1)and retains 87% at 3 A g(-1) after 3000 cyclesin 3 M KOH electrolyte. The results demonstrate that mesoporous Co3O4 with specific morphology can act as a promising electrode candidate in supercapacitors.
Anion–Cation Bonding and Structure–Property Relationships of Three cyclo -Pentazolate Compounds

Abstract:The all-nitrogen cyclo-pentazolate (c-N5–) anion has attracted considerable attention because of its potential applications in high-energy density materials. However, achieving comprehensive insight into the chemical properties of c-N5– is challenging because of its complex chemical behavior. To elucidate this behavior, we stabilized the c-N5– anion by forming its triaminoguanidinium (1) and 4-nitro-(3,4-diamino-1,2,4-triazolium-5-yl)-1H-pyrazolium (2) salts and its cocrystal (3) of a 1:1 ratio of 3,3-dinitroazetidinium pentazolate to 3,3-dinitroazetidine. X-ray single-crystal analysis confirmed that the c-N5– anion combined with a sterically hindered cation exhibits a highly active π-system. This is characterized by the intermolecular p−π, intramolecular π–π, and intermolecular nitro−π interactions, arising from the binding of the π-face of c-N5– to the amino group, electron-rich aromatic ring, and nitro group, respectively. In combination with hydrogen bonds, these interactions synergistically sustain the stability of the c-N5– derivatives. Electronic structure calculations provided additional information on the physicochemical properties of these compounds. Remarkably, the predicted detonation velocity of 1 is higher than that of RDX among the new materials. Abstract:Abstract As the fourth full‐nitrogen structure, the pentazolate anion ( cyclo ‐N 5 − ) was highly coveted for decades. In 2017, the first air‐stable non‐metal pentazolate salt, (N 5 ) 6 (H 3 O) 3 (NH 4 ) 4 Cl, was obtained, representing a milestone in this field. As the latest member of the azole family, cyclo ‐N 5 − is comprised of five nitrogen atoms. Although significant attention has been paid to the potential of cyclo ‐N 5 − as an energetic material, its poor thermostability hinders any practical application. However, the unique ring structure and multiple coordination capability of cyclo ‐N 5 − provide a platform for the fabrication of various structures, among which pentasil‐zeolite topologies are the most intriguing. In addition, the introduction of structure‐directing auxiliaries enables the self‐assembly of diverse topological architectures, potentially imparting cyclo ‐N 5 − with the potential to impact wide‐ranging areas of coordination chemistry and topology. In this minireview, different pentasil‐zeolite topologies based on metal‐pentazolate frameworks are evaluated. To date, three zeolitic and zeolite‐like topologies have been reported, namely the melanophlogite (MEP), chibaite (MTN), and unj topologies. The MEP topology consists of two nanocages, Na 20 N 60 and Na 24 N 60 , whereas the MTN topology contains Na 20 N 60 and Na 28 N 80 nanocages. Furthermore, the unj topology features multiple homochiral channels consisting of two helical chains. Various possible strategies for obtaining additional pentasil‐zeolite topologies are also discussed.
