Abstract:Eco-feedback is popularly explored as an approach to promoting energy conservation, usually examined in residential settings with screen-based displays. How a physical eco-feedback display may work in a non-residential setting, e.g. campus, is still relatively underexplored. This paper presents a physical eco-feedback display - ArchiExpression - to be installed in a shared outdoor space of China, and explores its role in engaging attention and awareness on energy related issues for people of the space. Rather than showing energy information visually and accurately on a screen-based display, ArchiExpression presents information physically and ambiguously with a matrix of solar panel units. A two-week study of its deployment in a university campus of China illustrates its effectiveness in engaging people's interests, as well as people's reflections on energy consumption and the meanings of the eco-feedback design itself. The study highlights how the context, the form and the ambiguity shape the meanings of the eco-feedback display and people's interactions with it.
