Abstract:This paper proposes a fast inter prediction mode decision method for H.264. By pre-encoding a down-sampled small image, the candidate inter block modes can be reduced to a small subset. The experimental result shows that our algorithm can reduce nearly 50% of encoding time with PSNR decrease less than 0.2dB.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of the intra prediction of the JM7.2, a fast mode decision method of intra prediction is put forward. In intra coding, the mode selections between chroma prediction and luma prediction are separated. In inter coding, the information of the best inter mode is used to accelerate the intra prediction. Compared with theJM72, about 29% coding time is saved, while the luma PSNR decreases only 0.01 dB and the bit-rate increases about 0.34%.

Abstract:This paper presents an intra-frame coding mode decision algorithm for MPEG-4 to H.264/AVC transcoding in integer transform domain. The edge direction inside a block is estimated in the integer transform domain to reduce candidate prediction modes. Based on the analysis of the variance of the sixteen subblock DC coefficients inside a macroblock, “transition interval” and “double thresholds” intra prediction size selection are proposed to reduce wrong judgments. According to statistical results of high probability of neighboring blocks having the same intra prediction mode, a decision rule is given to predict the coding mode of the current block from its neighbors. The proposed transcoding algorithm can reduce computation time by more than 75% comparing with the pixel domain cascaded intra-frame transcoder, while maintains similar picture quality and bitrate.

Abstract:For decreasing the computational complexity of motion estimation in video coding standard H.264 , a fast algorithm with three mode decision principles was proposed. On the basis of the statistical analysis of finally selected encoding mode, the relationship between encoding chosen block and image characters was discussed. The ruler of big block being more easily chosen than small block was derived. By combining sum of absolute difference (SAD) and motion vector in motion estimation, and three mode decision principles were provided. The block mode characteristics were analyzed by the principle of reducing redundant computation in the unnecessary searching block. The direct multiple modes searching process in motion estimation was improved to two steps including mode decision first and then block searching. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can provide better competitive performance than the full search algorithm, and that the computational cost is reduced efficiently with similar visual quality and bit rate.

Abstract:A new H.264 fast intra prediction algorithm was proposed to improve the encoder speed using three criterion,such as mode correlation of neighboring macroblocks,early termination based on all zero block detection,and the prediction of intra-mode size using texture feature of macroblock.The simulation results showed that, compared with full search algorithm,the encoding frames per second(fps) of the proposed algorithm increases 42.45%～73.71% with similar coding efficiency.Compared with FIPAMP algorithm,the fps of the proposed algorithm increases 23.19%～55.83% with similar coding efficiency.

Abstract:Video coding in wireless environment requires lower computational complexity and lower energy consumption than that used in storage oriented or network oriented application. Although H.264/AVC standard provides considerable higher compression efficiency as compared to the previous standards, its complexity is significantly increased at the same time. In a H.264/AVC encoder, the most time-consuming components are variable block sizes motion estimation and mode decision using rate-distortion optimization (RDO). In this paper, we propose a novel fast inter-prediction mode decision by exploiting high correlation between rate-distortion costs (RD cost) of macroblocks in the current inter frame and their co-located macroblocks in the previous inter frame. Using this new algorithm, we can reduce a number of inter mode candidates and skip motion estimation for these modes. In addition, our algorithm can also decrease a number of tested intra modes. Simulation results show that our approach can save 20% to 50% encoding time, with a negligible PSNR loss less than 0. 1 dB and bit rate increase no more than 2% for almost all the test sequences.

Abstract:Intra-prediction coding and mode decision based on Rate-Distortion Optimization(RDO) technique were used in the H.264,which raised the compression ratio,but increase the computing complexity as well.Intra-prediction coding includes Intra_4×4 and Intra_16×16 prediction mode.Based on the analysis of the features of Intra_4×4 and Intra_16×16,a threshold was proposed to save computation.Then,the algorithms for intra-prediction mode decision was modified.The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can increase the speed of intra coding significantly with negligible loss of PNSR and increase of bite-rate.

Abstract:AVS1-P2 introduces several prediction modes for inter coding. In order to achieve the best coding efficiency,the rate distortion optimization is exploited to choose the most suitable predicting mode,but it is very computationally expensive.In this paper,according to the characteristics of AVS1-P2 integer transform,we propose a new fast inter mode decision algorithm to improve the encoder speed based on two criterions,early termination based on all zero block detection and the prediction of inter-mode size using texture characteristic of macroblock.Compared with the reference code,simulation results show that this method will reduce the computing complexity of encoder and improve the encoding efficiency of AVS1-P2 software encoder while bit-rate and video quality almost remain unchanged.

Abstract:It has been well demonstrated that edge information can be utilized for intra mode decision in H.264/AVC to reduce the computational complexity. In spite of the remarkable speedup for mode decision, the existing edge detection based solution always shows relatively high coding loss due to inaccurate mode selection. In this work, a novel fast intra mode decision based on a more precise direction representation scheme is proposed, which exploits the gradation along the prediction direction as well as the differential between the original pixels and their predicted ones. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed method can averagely achieve about 0.05 dB peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) gain and 1.1% bit rate (BR) decrease with negligible computational complexity increase, compared with the state-of-the-art edge detection method.

Abstract:A tool of intra prediction is introduced in the new video coding standard-H.264, which can cut down the spatial redundancy effectively. Though intra prediction can reduce the bit rate, it is undoubtedly computationally intensive. To overcome this drawback, a novel fast intra prediction algorithm is proposed in this paper. By make use of the information in the transform domain, the direction of texture is estimated at first and then the intra mode decision will be made among several most possible mode, which can diminish the number of calculation. To variable video sequences, the simulation results show that with the proposed algorithm the time of the intra coding can be reduce about 70% while keep the equivalent precision. It is conclusion that the proposed algorithm is suitable to the real-time implements with rigorous requirement on delay.

Abstract:Intra-prediction is an important feature in the new H.264 video coding standard.It predicts the current block with surrounding pixels to reduce the special redundancies and improves coding efficiency of H.264 greatly.However,there are 9 and 4 candidate modes for 4×4 and 16×16 intra-prediction respectively.The full search algorithm used to select the best mode is computationally expensive.To reduce its complexity,a fast intra-prediction algorithm was proposed.Based on the all I-frame coding,it took advantage of the strong correlations in temporal domain,spatial domain and different block-sizes to predict the best mode of the current block.An early termination mechanism was further incorporated to avoid unnecessary computations when a good decision can be made in early stage.Experimental results show that compared to full search,the proposed method can reduce 50%~75% computational load of the intra-prediction while the quality degradation is negligible.

Abstract:To simplify the computational complexity of intra-frame prediction mode selection for AVS,a fast Intra-frame prediction mode selection algorithm is proposed.The algorithm uses the correlation of the best modes of adjacent blocks and all zero block detection.Based on the best modes of adjacent blocks,the mode of the current block is selected,and then if the mode is satisfied with the threshold of early termination,the rest modes will not be searched.The paper presents the formula of threshold to suit all kinds of sequences by lots of experiments.It derives the best 8×8 zero-block detection threshold relating only with the quantization parameter.If the predicated mode is satisfied with the threshold,the rest modes will not be searched.Experimental results show that the coding time of the proposed algorithm is decreased by 15.81%~40.76% with negligible loss of PSNR and increment of bit rate.

Abstract:H.264/AVC emploies RDO technique in inter-frame mode selection to enhance coding efficiency,but it increases computational complexity drastically.The proposed fast algorithm exploits rate distortion characteristic and spatio-temporal correlation among neighboring macroblocks to reduce the range of candidate modes,which can efficiently save the inter prediction complexity.Experimental results show that the approach reduces the coding time by 25%~46% with similar visual quality and bit rate of H.264/AVC.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel fast intra prediction method to optimize H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video coding. In H.264, coding performance is enhanced through spatial prediction besides temporal prediction. In its luminance intra prediction, 4 modes for 16×16 block-size and 9 directional modes for 4×4 block-size are utilized, and the optimal intra mode is selected by R-D optimization, so the intra mode selection results in high coding complexity. To reduce the complexity of intra prediction, the fast hierarchical mode selection method is proposed with fewer modes to be examined, and intermediate computing results are reused. Therefore the intra prediction mode decision process is accelerated greatly. With the proposed fast intra prediction mode selection method, the intra prediction time can be reduced above 30% with less than 2% increase of bitrate, and up to 0.04dB loss in performance compared to the brute intra prediction mode selection method in H.264 reference software. The results are obtained by encoding with all I-frames, and even less performance loss can be achieved with the same time saving if encoding in I, P and B frames. So the complexity of computation can reduce constantly.

Abstract:Enhanced Intra and Inter prediction techniques are the key factors to the success of H.264. There are a total of nine optional prediction modes for each 4 x 4 luma block. H.264 adapts Rate Distortion Optimization (RDO) technique to get high coding rate and visual quality. Because RDO is too much exhaustive, several attempts have been made to explore fast algorithms. The choice of intra prediction mode for each 4 x 4 block must be signaled to the decoder and this could potentially require a large number of bits. However, intra modes for neighbouring 4 x 4 blocks are often correlated. To take advantage of this correlation, predictive coding is used to signal 4 x 4 intra modes. But still large number of bits is required to signal nine intra prediction modes. We adaptively selected only five modes; selection of modes depends on the position of 4 x 4 block in the slice or frame. After experimental results we have come to know that the increase in the number of bits for encoding residual coefficients is approximately same as decrease in the number of bits required to signal intra prediction in odes, providing same PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio). By using proposed technique, computational speed increased by approximate to 45% without significant performance degradation.

Abstract:In this paper,a novel fast mode decision algorithm for H.264 intra prediction coding based on direction variation strengths(DVS) is proposed.The block type of the MB is determined directly by comparing the DVS values with the thresholds.Furthermore,the DVS-based edge detection is also presented to reduce the candidate modes for RDO computation.Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the time in intra prediction coding by about 70%,with average loss in PSNR less than 0.2dB,the average bit rate(BR) increase less than 3%.

Abstract:Spatial intra prediction is introduced to achieve higher coding efficiency in H.264/AVC. Unfortunately, this comes at the cost in considerably increased complexity when RDO is enabled. In this paper, we propose a fast intra prediction algorithm including reducing the redundancy between the chroma mode decision and luma mode decision, improving the mode decision scheme and heuristically selecting block type. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can drastically reduce coding complexity with only negligible coding efficiency loss.

Abstract:The H.264/AVC standard employs several powerful coding methods to obtain a high compression efficiency.Due to the large number of combinations of coding modes,the mode decision process requires an extremely large number of computations.To reduce the complexity,a low complexity algorithm was developed which combines fast SKIP mode prediction and selective intra mode decisions.Simulations show that the methods reduce the encoding time by 16.4% with only negligible loss in coding efficiency(0.05 dB decrease in PSNR and 0.72% decrease in bit-rate).This algorithm can be easily incorporated into a wide variety of fast mode selection algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a fast intra mode decision algorithm based on spatial-domain energy for H.264/AVC. First of all, the relevance between macroblock (MB) and its 4x4 sub-blocks is employed in our algorithm to determine the Intra prediction block size. And then, in order to further reduce the computational complexity of Intra mode decision radically, mode candidate reduction algorithm is released by using the information abstracted from the MB or its sub-blocks. Compared with H.264 reference software, the proposed algorithm maintains the encoding performance efficiently by slight decrease in PSNR and increase in Bitrate. However, it achieves above 84% reduction of computation complexity in average.
