Abstract:Welcome to the Fourteenth ACM International Conference on Multimedia (ACM MM 20) , held October 23-27, 2006 at Fess Parker's Doubletree Resort Hotel in beautiful Santa Barbara, California, USA.ACM Multimedia is the premier annual professional meeting for communicating the state-of-the-art in multimedia research, technology, and art. As in previous years, starting with the first ACM Multimedia conference in 1993, the conference seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners in academia, industry, and government who are interested in exploring and exploiting new and multiple media to create new capabilities for human expression, communication, collaboration, and interaction. ACM Multimedia covers all aspects of multimedia computing: from underlying technologies to applications, theory to practice, and servers to networks to devices. Multimedia is an interdisciplinary endeavor, and the variety of conference events reflects this. The overall conference encompasses three major parts: interesting tutorials on Monday, October 23, an exciting three-day main conference on Tuesday through Thursday, October 24-26, and a set of workshops in hot multimedia areas on Friday, October 27.The three-day main conference comprises several different technical program elements, each with separate submissions and reviewing: full papers, short papers, a panel, the doctoral symposium, Brave New Topics sessions, technical demonstrations, a video program, an open source contest, and the Interactive Arts Program. We are excited to host two keynote presentations by Ken Goldberg of UC Berkeley and Bradley Horowitz of Yahoo!, who will give unique perspectives of their work in academia and industry.The program co-chairs for ACM MM 2006 are Yong Rui, Wolfgang Klas, and Ketan Mayer-Patel, who were responsible, along with a program committee of 92 members, for selecting the long paper program in the areas of Content, Applications, and Systems. These tracks received 292 long paper submissions (128 in Content, 100 in Applications, and 64 in Systems). Each paper was reviewed by at least three qualified reviewers in a double-blind review process. The program committee met on June 21, 2006 in Redmond, Washington to discuss the papers and make final selections for papers to be included as oral presentations in the conference program. This rigorous review process resulted in the acceptance of 48 long papers: 21 in the Content track, 16 in the Applications track, and 11 in the Systems track. This represents an acceptance rate of 16 percent. We heartily thank the program co-chairs and the program committee members for their outstanding and dedicated work.The short paper program received 178 submissions and, after a thorough review process, accepted 66 papers, for a 37 percent acceptance rate. These will be presented during poster sessions at the conference. Many thanks to the short paper program co-chairs Brian Bailey, Belle Tseng, and Nalini Venkatasubramanian for an excellent job.

Abstract:It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 2015 ACM MULTIMEDIA Conference, the premier conference for multimedia experts and practitioners from across academia and industry. This year we are in beautiful Brisbane, Australia, our first time in this wonderful country and we're delighted to be here and looking forward to experiencing some of the delights and treasures this great country has to offer. This year's conference is the 23rd in the annual series continues our tradition to bring together a wide and diverse set of activities including panel sessions, tutorials, a series of workshops, technical demos, an open source software competition, a doctoral symposium, an interactive art exhibition, a video program and of course scientific papers and posters including special sessions on brave new ideas and grand challenges, as well as "regular" topics. What a busy week we are going to have! One of the great parts of the program that we have lined up for you is the two keynote talks. On Tuesday October 27th, Judy Kay from the University of Sydney will talk about "Harnessing Big Personal Data, with scrutable user modeling for privacy and control", bringing her extensive background in Human-Computer Interaction to the really topical issue of personal data, and how to manage and use it for good and practical purposes. On Thursday October 29th, Zhengyou Zhang from Microsoft Research will talk about "Vision-enhanced Immersive Interaction and Remote Collaboration with Large Touch Displays" where he will address issues like telepresence and computer supported cooperative work and how those technologies have, and continue to develop.

Abstract:Welcome to the 5th ACM International Conference on Multimedia Retrieval, ICMR 2015. ICMR is a premier conference in the area of multimedia retrieval, offering great opportunities for exchanging leading-edge multimedia retrieval ideas among researchers, practitioners and other potential users of multimedia retrieval systems. Multimedia computing, indexing and retrieval continues to be one of the most exciting and fastest-growing research areas in the field of multimedia technology. However, opportunities for the exchange of ideas among different groups of researchers, and between researchers and potential users of multimedia retrieval systems, are still limited. The conference, which puts together the long-lasting experience of former ACM CIVR and ACM MIR series, was initialized in 2011 to illuminate the state of the art in multimedia retrieval. This year we received a record-high number of 244 submissions to the main conference from 35 countries. After a rigorous review process by the program committee members, 113 papers from 23 countries were accepted for presentation. Conflict-of-interest papers authored by the program chairs were handled separately by the general chairs, and those from the general chairs were handled by the program chairs. In addition, 12 borderline full papers were recommended to be downgraded to short papers, so the total number of accepted short papers is 46. We also moved 3 accepted special session papers to the regular sessions due to the cancellation of two planned special sessions, leading to a total number of n51 full papers in the regular program. The remaining 7 special session papers are presented in one special oral session and one special poster session. The program also includes two tutorials and one workshop: Tutorial on \"Social Multimedia Computing.\" Tutorial on \"Multimedia Quality Modeling: Theories and Applications.\" Workshop on \"Environmental Multimedia Retrieval.\"

Abstract:The 2010 Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia (PCM 2010) was held in Shanghai at Fudan University, during September 21–24, 2010. Since its inauguration in 2000, PCM has been held in various places around the Pacific Rim, namely Sydney (PCM 2000), Beijing (PCM 2001), Hsinchu (PCM 2002), Singapore (PCM 2003), Tokyo (PCM 2004), Jeju (PCM 2005), Zhejiang (PCM 2006), Hong Kong (PCM 2007), Tainan (PCM 2008), and Bangkok (PCM 2009). PCM is a major annual international conference organized as a forum for the dissemination of state-of-the-art technological advances and research results in the fields of theoretical, experimental, and applied multimedia analysis and processing. PCM 2010 featured a comprehensive technical program which included 75 oral and 56 poster presentations selected from 261 submissions from Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Norway, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the UK, and the USA. Three distinguished researchers, Prof. Zhi-Hua Zhou from Nanjing University, Dr. Yong Rui from Microsoft, and Dr. Tie-Yan Liu from Microsoft Research Asia delivered three keynote talks to the conference. We are very grateful to the many people who helped to make this conference a s-cess. We would like to especially thank Hong Lu for local organization, Qi Zhang for handling the publication of the proceedings, and Cheng Jin for looking after the c-ference website and publicity. We thank Fei Wu for organizing the special session on large-scale multimedia search in the social network settings.

Abstract:The papers in this special section is to broadly engage the machine learning and multimedia communities on the emerging yet challenging interpretable machine learning. Multimedia is increasingly becoming the “biggest big data,” among the most important and valuable source for insight and information. Many powerful machine learning algorithms, especially deep learning models such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have recently achieved outstanding predictive performance in a wide range of multimedia applications, including visual object classification, scene understanding, speech recognition, and activity prediction. Nevertheless, most deep learning algorithms are generally conceived as blackbox methods, and it is difficult to intuitively and quantitatively understand the results of their prediction and inference. Since this lack of interpretability is a major bottleneck in designing more successful predictive models and exploring wider-range useful applications, there has been an explosion of interest in interpreting the representations learned by these models, with profound implications for research into interpretable machine learning in the multimedia community.

Abstract:The goal of the conference is to bring together mobile systems, ubiquitous computing and multimedia experts. This year we received 66 research paper submissions around this topic. A rigorous review process was followed with each paper receiving three reviews from international experts. Based upon this process, twenty-one regular papers were selected to appear in these proceedings and to be presented at the conference. This results in an acceptance rate of 31.8% for 2011, compared to 62 submissions and 25 accepted long papers and 5 short papers 2010, resulting in an acceptance rate of 48.3%.

Abstract:Social media has received extensive attention recently and has become a very popular research area due to its wide spectrum of applications. We note that even though the whole area of social media is very popular in the literature, there are a group of research issues that are related to the social-cultural constraints in the social media study that have not yet received sufficient attention. In this context, we group all these issues together under the umbrella of a new sub-area of social media that we call connected multimedia . Consequently, by connected multimedia, we mean the study of the social and technical interactions among users, multimedia data, and devices across cultures and the explicit exploitation of cultural differences. Hence, connected multimedia involves the three elements – the users, the multimedia data, and the devices – with two perspectives – the social focus and the cultural focus. In short, connected multimedia is about multimedia content and connection across community and cultural boundaries. In comparison with those existing research areas including social media as its super-area and human centered computing, we here emphasize that connected multimedia pays more attention to the cultural difference. The definition of the social side is broader than just national cultures; it possibly includes cultures of groups, disciplines, organizations, communities, ethnicities, religions, and nations. This emphasis distinguishes connected multimedia from all other existing areas such as social media and cross-media, which may either claim to include some of these aspects, among many others, or have different foci. This special section is organized following the successful first two editions of the workshop on the newly emerged theme of connected multimedia held in Hangzhou, China, in October of 2009 and in Florence, Italy, in October, 2010. After two rounds of rigorous reviews for all the submissions in response to the CFP of this special section, we have finally selected three papers to be included in this special section on connected multimedia. The paper “Association of Moving Objects across Visual Sensor Networks” by M.J. Mirza and N. Anjum presents an inter-camera trajectory association algorithm for partially overlapping visual sensor networks; the paper addresses issues related to trajectory extraction, representation, and association. The paper “Faceted Subtopic Retrieval: Exploiting the Topic Hierarchy via a Multi-Modal Framework” by J. Sang and C. Xu presents a new framework for multi-modal analysis and retrieval called faceted subtopic retrieval that is tailored to complex queries to the social media data on the Web concerning political and social events or issues. A LDA-like model is developed to exploit the intrinsic topic hierarchy inside the retrieved data. The paper “Tour Route Recommendation Begins with Multimodal Classification” by X. Chen and Q. Wang addresses the problem of location estimation for tourist photos; the paper proposes a solution that begins with classification and exploits explicitly the textual, temporal, geographic, and visual information together for a tour route recommendation. Overall, all the three papers address the theory and application case studies on the general topic of connected multimedia. While this editorial is co-authored by the guest-editors who also organized the two editions of the workshop on the same topic that actually led to this special section, many people have contributed the ideas that have finally led to the development of this topic of connected multimedia in the literature. Specifically, Noshir Contractor, Alan Hanjalic, Alexander G. Hauptmann, Xian-Sheng Hua, Alejandro (Alex) Jaimes, Ivan Ivanov, Michael S. Lew, Wanqing Li, Ching-Yung Ling, Alexander C. Loui, Jiebo Luo, Michael W. Macy, Nicu Sebe, Qi Tian, Yonghong Tian, Vincent S. Tseng, Qing Wang, Changsheng Xu, Huimin Yu, and Shiwen Yu deserve the credit for contributing their ideas to the development of the literature on this topic. Abstract:Welcome to the 2nd ACM International Conference on Multimedia Retrieval, ICMR 2012. ICMR is the premier conference in the area of multimedia retrieval, offering great opportunities for exchanging leading-edge multimedia retrieval ideas among researchers, practitioners and other potential users of multimedia retrieval systems. Multimedia computing, indexing and retrieval continue to be one of the most exciting and fastest-growing research areas in the field of multimedia technology. However, opportunities for the exchange of ideas between different groups of researchers, and between researchers and potential users of multimedia retrieval systems, are still limited. ICMR is set up to present the state of the art in multimedia retrieval by researchers and practitioners from throughout the world and to provide an international forum for the discussion of challenges. The conference, puts together the long-lasting experience of former ACM CIVR and ACM MIR series, was set up to illuminate the state of the art in multimedia (including image, video and audio) retrieval. This year 145 regular paper submissions were received. After being reviewed by the Technical Program Committee members, 50 papers from 18 countries were accepted for presentation. The acceptance rate is around 34%. Additionally, 11 papers were submitted to two special sessions, "Socio-Video Semantics" and "Social Events in Web Multimedia", among them, 6 papers from 7 countries were accepted for presentation. The potential of academic results are best communicated through demos. This year the demo session contains 11 technical demos from 10 countries.

Abstract:It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 2017 ACM International Conference on Retrieval (ICMR 2017). This year's conference continues a 17-year tradition of being the premier forum for presentation of research results and experience reports on core topics in multimedia retrieval, as well as the broader set of topics that must be addressed to ensure that multimedia retrieval technologies are of practical use in real-world use cases. Special emphasis was placed on topics related to large-scale indexing, user interaction, exploiting diverse and multimodal data, and domain-specific challenges. This annual international conference, combines the long-standing experience of the former ACM CIVR (International Conference on Image and Retrieval) and ACM MIR (International Conference on Retrieval) series, and was set up in 2011 to highlight the state of the art in multimedia (e.g., text, image, video, audio, sensor data, and 3D) retrieval. This year's edition has attracted submissions from all over the world: Asia, Canada, Australia, Africa, Europe, and the United States. In total, it received 178 valid submissions, which were reviewed by the program committee. For the classic research paper tracks, out of 95 full paper submissions, 33 were accepted -- 20 for full oral presentation and 13 for spotlight oral presentation (acceptance rate of 34%; full oral paper acceptance rate of 21%) -- and, out of 35 short paper submissions, 13 were accepted (acceptance rate of 37%). Next to full and short paper tracks, the conference includes a diversity of other tracks: open-source software (acceptance rate of 80%), technical demonstrations (acceptance rate of 85%), brave new ideas papers (acceptance rate of 75%), doctoral symposium papers (acceptance rate of 80%), and special session papers (acceptance rate of 66%). In addition to the tracks of the main conference, two workshops are offered: Wearable MultiMedia and Multimedia Forensics and Security. The conference program is complemented by a full day of tutorials on Video Indexing, Search, Detection, and Description, keynote talks given by world-class researchers (Searching for a thing, Arnold W.M. Abstract:It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 2010 ACM International Workshop on Connected Multimedia -- CMM2010. Following the very successful, the very first international workshop on connected multimedia co-sponsored by US National Science Foundation and Zhejiang University of China held in Hangzhou, China, in October, 2009, due to the large requests from the community, this is the second edition of this workshop sponsored first time by ACM in conjunction with ACM MM 2010 held in Florence, Italy. The theme of the workshop is connected multimedia -- further exploiting social and cultural constraints for distributed multimedia computing. This workshop is intended to bring together researchers, engineers, and practitioners to exchange their ideas in this area and to advance and disseminate the most recent research results on this theme. Since connected multimedia is a new research area, we intend to organize this workshop program as a combination of the invited and publicly solicited contributions from the related communities. Specifically, the program consists of six oral presentations addressing issues related to connected multimedia theory as well as case studies, one keynote speech, as well as a panel discussion on the current and future research foci in this area.

Abstract:It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 2011 ACM International Workshop on Interactive Multimedia on Mobile and Portable Devices -- IMMPD'11. Following the successful events previously organized by the workshop organizers, this year's workshop brings together researchers from both academia and industry in domains including computer vision, audio and speech processing, machine learning, pattern recognition, communications, human-computer interaction, and media technology to share and discuss recent advances in interactive multimedia. The call for papers attracted 13 submissions from United States, Europe, Japan, Taiwan, and China. A number of leading companies, such as Nokia, NTT, and Sharp, contributed their recent research results. The program committee accepted 7 papers (6 regular papers and 1 poster paper) that cover a variety of topics, including mobile video streaming, interactive display, image/video summarization and organization on mobile devices, and mobile video browsing. We hope that these proceedings will serve as a valuable reference for researchers and developers in this field.

Abstract:The papers in this special section focus on the topic of urban multimedia computing. Presents emerging methods in multimedia computing for urban analysis and applications. Urban computing is a process of acquisition, integration, analysis, and understanding of the urban data generated from various sources, e.g., sensors, devices, and social media, for various applications. Multimedia computing plays a vital role in urban computing due to the huge presence of multimodal sensors, heterogeneous multimedia data from the social media, multimedia interaction between human and cities. Recently, benefiting from both the easy availability of urban multimedia big data and the rapid development of deep learning technologies, some novel methods in multimedia computing have emerged as a promising tool for solving new urban computing tasks, such as quantifying the urban perception and estimating the demographic makeup of neighborhoods. Meanwhile, these advances have led to a new research direction: urban multimedia computing at the intersection between multimedia computing and urban computing. In order to effectively utilize multimedia computing methods for modeling the urban multimedia data, we should consider relevant theories from other fields. Therefore, there’s a growing demand for developing and designing new multimedia computing methods for urban data analysis and applications.

Abstract:This book has brought 24 groups of experts and active researchers around the world together in image processing and analysis, video processing and analysis, and communications related processing, to present their newest research results, exchange latest experiences and insights, and explore future directions in these important and rapidly evolving areas. It aims at increasing the synergy between academic and industry professionals working in the related field. It focuses on the state-of-the-art research in various essential areas related to emerging technologies, standards and applications on analysis, processing, computing, and communication of multimedia information. The target audience of this book is researchers and engineers as well as graduate students working in various disciplines linked to multimedia analysis, processing and communications, eg, computer vision, pattern recognition, information technology, image processing, and artificial intelligence. The book is also meant to a broader audience including practicing professionals working in image/video applications such as image processing, video surveillance, multimedia indexing and retrieval, and so on. Abstract:The explosively growing momentum behind worldwide broadband deployment and the emerging convergence of voice, image, video and data services offer the base for various modern multimedia applications and services such as mobile TV, multimedia messenger and blog, social networking, video conferencing, Internet gaming, interactive TV, IPTV, and multimedia visualization, navigation, management, search and retrieval. The advances of computing and communication over wired and wireless networks and new technologies ranging from multimedia coding, network infrastructure, content distribution protocols, quality of service (QoS) management to post-processing and analysis, have stimulated more diversified multimedia applications and services. IPTV, in particular, built on managed IP networks, is growing rapidly in commercial deployments targeting at providing high quality video viewing experience that is at least as good as what is offered by today's cable/satellite/broadcastTV. The workshop represents the story continued on the First IEEE International Workshop on IP Multimedia Communications (IPMC) and the second International Workshop on Multimedia Analysis and Processing (IMAP). Each paper went through at least two peer reviews by members of the Technical Program Committee as well as additional reviewers. These reviews provided detailed comments on the quality of the submitted papers. Based on these stringent reviews, we accept seven papers for presentation and publication.

Abstract:Welcome to the Second International Conference on Internet Multimedia Computing and Service (ICIMCS 2010). The conference is organized by ACM SIGMM Beijing Chapter, and is hosted by Harbin Institute of Technology, with a technical cosponsor. ICIMCS 2010 is held from December 30 to 31 in Harbin, China, which focuses on a wide variety of key issues and investigates new approaches to tackle problems arising from fast-growing multimedia data on the internet and users' diverse requirement for multimedia service. ICIMCS 2010 is a forum for researchers from academia and the industry to exchange information on state-of-the-art internet multimedia information processing technologies and applications, as well as to identify emerging research topics and define the future of multimedia information computing from the internet. This year, we have received a total of 68 high quality submissions. Among them, only 14 were accepted as oral, 26 as poster and 8 as special session papers, for a total of 48 accepted papers. The acceptance rate for regular submissions is around 20.6% as oral and 38.2% as poster, excluding the special sessions where the majority is invited.

Building on the success of its predecessors, ISM2016 continues to be a major international forum for the researchers and practitioners to exchange information regarding latest advances in the state of the art and practice of multimedia computing, as well as to identify emerging research topics and define the future of multimedia computing. Research in multimedia computing is generally concerned with presentation, integration and processing (analysis and synthesis) of one or more media, such as text, image, graphics, audio, video, social data, and data collected from various sensors, etc., using computing techniques. The technical program of ISM2016 consists of invited talks and paper presentations.
