Abstract:This special issue will encompass state-of-the-art research on emerging topics related to development and learning in natural and artificial systems. The primary focus of this special issue is to explore the facets of development and learning from a multidisciplinary perspective by convening researchers from the fields of computer science, robotics, psychology, and developmental studies. We invited researchers to share knowledge and research on how humans and animals develop sensing, reasoning, and actions, and how to exploit robots as research tools to test models of development and learning. We expected the submitted contributions to emphasize the interaction with social and physical environments and how cognitive and developmental capabilities can be transferred to computing systems and robotics. This approach is in harmony with the dual objectives of comprehending human and animal development while leveraging this understanding to enhance future intelligent technologies, particularly for robots that will engage in close interactions with humans.

Abstract:This Editorial introduces the motivation and organization process of the special issue on intelligent robotic systems. The major contributions of the six papers published in the special issue are discussed. In these papers, three papers present recent progresses in robot navigation and localization in complex environments. One paper reports a new robot sensing approach. The other two papers address the problems in robot dynamics modeling and service modeling in human-robot interaction.

Abstract:CYBER-PHYSICAL system is a system of collaborating computational elements to control physical entities. The coordination and the tight link between computational, virtual and physical resources in cyber-physical system will have a pervasive effect on our everyday life. The development of cyber-physical system will create new opportunities for the introduction of services that will enhance the quality of life of the society as a whole. Research advances in cyber-physical systems promise to transform our world with systems that will far exceed those of today in terms of: effectiveness, adaptability, autonomicity, energy efficiency, precision, reliability, safety, usability, scalability, stability and user-centric applicability. Moreover, recently the sensor web concept came into foreground, aiming at combining distributed sensing with the ubiquitous connectivity and accessibility of the web, therefore facilitating the close interaction of digital world with physical world. The technical challenges of cyber-physical systems are significant, and of high research and practical importance, mainly stemming from the fact that traditionally different groups of scientists deal with this setting without much interaction, using disjoint sets of techniques. Towards merging the cyber and physical world, well-defined analytical models, methodologies and experimental validations are required in order to build systems capable of orchestrating heterogeneous components together in a flexible and efficient way. The control systems community has been consistently engaged in the development of theories, tools, and practices for the analysis and the design of cyber-physical systems. The aim of this special issue is to provide a window into the recent developments of the fundamentals and applications of control of cyber-physical systems.

Abstract:This Special Issue will accept contributions describing innovative research and developments in ‘Advanced Mechatronic Systems’, and will cover a wide range of disciplines, including robotics, automation and control systems, and new energy systems. It particularly welcomes those emerging methodologies and techniques which bridge theoretical studies and applications in advanced mechatronic systems. Novel quantitative engineering and science studies may be considered as well. AI, big data, intelligent computation, and their applications. Signal and image processing and pattern recognition in mechatronic systems. New energy systems, simulation and optimisation. Intelligent fault diagnosis and tolerance of mechatronic systems. This Special Issue focuses on these topics and selects high-quality research papers to be published. The first paper presents a hysteresis mathematical model of s shape memory alloy actuator for feedforward hysteresis compensator [1]. The second paper proposes an ensemble model of ordinal classification based on neural network with ordered partitions and Dempster-Shafer theory [2]. The third paper introduces the shapelet transformation is proposed to calculate the parameter of one-dimensional ternary model which is for feature selection [3]. The fourth paper derives a parameter optimisation strategy of control systems for uncertain WPT systems using the modified genetic algorithm [4]. The fifth paper proposes a design scheme to guarantee the uncertain non-linear systems to be robustly stable while the equivalent non-linear systems is passive [5]. The sixth paper designs a humanoid sliding model neural network controller based on the human gait [6]. The seventh paper applies the exponential smoothing method to process the initial data, calculates the relevant technical indicators as the characteristics to be selected, and proposes the D-RF-RS method to optimise random forest [7]. The eighth paper studies to construct an early Japanese book re-organisation system by combining image processing and deep learning techniques [8]. Given these diverse contributions, this special issue brings some novel findings and gives many hits for future research. Finally, the Guest Editors would like to sincerely thank all the authors for their valuable contributions and the IET staffs for their kind assistance. Abstract:Evolution of Web applications is high for several reasons. Among the others, the need of being constantly updated with the emerging technologies is maybe the most important. Web Systems Evolution is a multifaceted and broad field studying techniques, approaches and tools able to restructure, re-engineer and in general modify a Web application with the intention of renovating or improving some quality aspects of it. This special section is devoted to a selection of papers that have been originally published in the proceedings of the International Symposium on Web Site Evolution, held in Beijing, China in October 2008. The selected papers investigate different issues concerning the evolution of Web Systems, ranging from migration towards SOA to more classic re-engineering and maintenance tasks (e.g., improving the navigational structure). The main contribution of this special section consist of translating some interesting research ideas about Web systems evolution into solutions and tools able to transfer knowledge to the industry.

Abstract:The papers in this special section presents state-of-the-art research in the area of human-level artificial intelligence and robotic systems from a complex systems perspective. These papers aim to explore questions such as: What is a reasonable cognitive framework? How to build an embodied robotics system? How complex is human-level intelligence? What kinds of subsystems must be integrated to achieve human-level intelligence? To what degree does human-level intelligence rely on emergent properties? To what extent is complexity science (attractors, self-organizing criticality, network theory, and so on) useful for understanding human-level intelligence? Abstract:This theme section aims to disseminate the latest research results in the area of open environmental software systems modeling. Software-intensive systems, such as cyber-physical systems and self-adaptive systems, need to be able to constantly operate in open and dynamic environments, which requires them to continuously evolve, handle internal and external uncertainties, and so on. Traditional software engineering methodologies need to be extended for tackling these new challenges, and modeling is a promising technique to do that. This theme section contains two papers that tackle these issues, that were accepted after a thorough peer-reviewing process. Moreover, it contains an “Expert’s Voice” contribution on the uncertainty interaction problem, which is a relevant issue in the systems considered in this theme section.

Abstract:Nature's spectacular inventiveness, reflected in the enormous diversity of form and function displayed by the biosphere, is a feature of life that distinguishes living most strongly from nonliving. It is, therefore, not surprising that this aspect of life should become a central focus of artificial life. We have known since Darwin that the diversity is produced dynamically, through the process of evolution; this has led life's creative productivity to be called Open-Ended Evolution (OEE) in the field. This article introduces the second of two special issues on current research in OEE and provides an overview of the contents of both special issues. Most of the work was presented at a workshop on open-ended evolution that was held as a part of the 2018 Conference on Artificial Life in Tokyo, and much of it had antecedents in two previous workshops on open-ended evolution at artificial life conferences in Cancun and York. We present a simplified categorization of OEE and summarize progress in the field as represented by the articles in this special issue.
