Abstract:In this paper, we study the low Mach number limit of a compressible non-isothermal model for nematic liquid crystals in a bounded domain. We establish the uniform estimates with respect to the Mach number, and thus prove the convergence to the solution of the incompressible model for nematic liquid crystals.

Abstract:A model describing the evolution of a liquid crystal substance in the nematic phase is investigated in terms of three basic state variables: the {\it absolute temperature} $\teta$, the {\it velocity field} $\ub$, and the {\it director field} $\bd$, representing preferred orientation of molecules in a neighborhood of any point of a reference domain. The time evolution of the velocity field is governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes system, with a non-isotropic stress tensor depending on the gradients of the velocity and of the director field $\bd$, where the transport (viscosity) coefficients vary with temperature. The dynamics of $\bd$ is described by means of a parabolic equation of Ginzburg-Landau type, with a suitable penalization term to relax the constraint $|\bd | = 1$. The system is supplemented by a heat equation, where the heat flux is given by a variant of Fourier's law, depending also on the director field $\bd$. The proposed model is shown compatible with \emph{First and Second laws} of thermodynamics, and the existence of global-in-time weak solutions for the resulting PDE system is established, without any essential restriction on the size of the data.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of non-isothermal models describing the evolution of nematic liquid crystals and prove their consistency with the fundamental laws of classical Thermodynamics. The resulting system of equations captures all essential features of physically relevant models, in particular, the effect of stretching of the director field is taken into account. In addition, the associated initial-boundary value problem admits global-in-time weak solutions without any essential restrictions on the size of the initial data.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with a three-dimensional non-isothermal model for the compressible nematic liquid crystal flows in a periodic domain. Under some smallness and structural assumptions imposed on the time-periodic force, we establish the existence of the time-periodic solutions to the system by using a regularized approximation scheme and the topological degree theory. We also prove a uniqueness result via energy estimates.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of global classical solutions to hydrodynamical systems modeling the nematic liquid crystal flows under kinematic transports for molecules of different shapes. The coupling system consists of Navier–Stokes equations and kinematic transport equations for the molecular orientations. We prove the convergence of global solutions to single steady states as time tends to infinity as well as estimates on the convergence rate both in 2 D for arbitrary regular initial data and in 3 D for certain particular cases.

Abstract:This work is concerned with the solvability of a Navier-Stokes/Q-tensor coupled system modeling the nematic liquid crystal flow on a bounded domain in three dimensional Euclidian space with strong anchoring boundary condition for the order parameter. We prove the existence of local in time strong solution to the system with the anisotropic elastic energy. The proof is based on mainly two ingredients: first, we show that the Euler-Lagrange operator corresponding to the Landau-de Gennes free energy with general elastic coefficients fulfills the strong Legendre condition. This result together with a higher order energy estimate leads to the well-posedness of the linearized system, and then a local in time solution of the original system which is regular in temporal variable follows via a fixed point argument. Secondly, the hydrodynamic part of the coupled system can be reformulated into a quasi-stationary Stokes type equation to which the regularity theory of the generalized Stokes system, and then a bootstrap argument can be applied to enhance the spatial regularity of the local in time solution.

Abstract:In this article, we consider the hyperbolic Ericksen-Leslie system for incompressible liquid crystals without kinematic transport in three spatial dimensions, which is a nonlinear coupling of incompressible NavierStokes equations with wave map to S-2. This model is a strongly coupled system which contains the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations, the Poisson–Nernst–Planck equations and the Allen–Cahn equation, and finds many promising applications in microfluidics and materials science engineering.
