Abstract:The spatially correlating of the big data from global observation and analytical simulation in geoscience are able to facilitate data share utilization,and to server better the researches on global change,earth system science and social public affairs.This paper analyzed the current situations on global big data share including existed issues and developing directions.An Earth System Spatial Grid(ESSG) based on spheroid degenerated octree is introduced,and the spatially correlating methods between ESSG and current used coordination systems are presented.ESSG-based triple spatial data structure,integrated big data organization and spatial object representation principle are depicted.The ESSG-based share service mode for global big data are designed with cloud environment and web technology.With a testing hardware system set up and software system developed,and with global crust,DEM and atmosphere data being examples,the global big data spatially correlating,integrated visualization and share service are realized.

Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability

Abstract:Increasing international commitment is emerging to harness research to contribute to solving grand societal challenges related to global change. Examples include global research programmes like Future Earth and concerted efforts in the form of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. During the last decade and a half, diverse concepts and design principles have also been developed for solutions-oriented sustainability research. However, a number of challenges have emerged related to this new kind of transdisciplinary research. We argue that these challenges, related to, for example, research culture and stakeholder engagement, suitable funding, necessary interaction and communication skills for the researchers and end-users of research, and reward systems, could be addressed in a systematic way by new types of boundary organizations, and that Future Earth has potential to develop its national platforms into such organizations. We propose that these platforms, typically operating under research councils and science academies, have just the right mandate to take on important roles as mediators and facilitators for solutions-oriented global change research. They can create the necessary long-term relationships between academia and society, bring attention to capacity-building needs, and break old disciplinary research structures by promoting a new research culture where stakeholders and scientists find each other around relevant research questions. On a science-policy level, they can bring funders, policymakers, and scientists together to discuss how to overcome the key obstacles in the path of such change. Successful examples of such Future Earth platforms and activities already exist in Europe. Future Earth is in a position to spearhead the transformation of research culture from local to global level.

Abstract:Abstract This article addresses the question of what the future directions and emphases of the research in the earth science education field ought to be. During the past 30 years, Earth science education research has established a solid theoretical foundation, as well as practical strategies and techniques, for a meaningful teaching of earth science from K-12. However, the quality of this research, and the growing need for knowledge in Earth science, have done little to improve the low profile of ESE in schools worldwide. The article posits that narrowing this disturbing gap between the educational potential of Earth science and its low profile in schools requires a holistic agenda. Such an agenda will encompass the deepening of existing research of the Earth systems approach in areas like the development of environmental insight better understanding the learning process as an embedded human instinct, which will hopefully contribute to changing the current essentialism-based teaching culture. However, it will also include new avenues of research focused on changing the attitudes of geoscientists towards their role in society and the adoption of geoethical values.

Abstract:availability and quality, and biodiversity (Erisman et al. 2008).Such improvements will require significant advances in observations, prediction, and understanding of the complex interactions between the physical-biological-chemical Earth system 1 and global societies (NRC 2007(NRC , 2008)).Recognizing this challenge, delegates and scientists associated with the (refer to the appendix for acronym expansions) WMO, WCRP, WWRP, GAW, and IGBP proposed the Earth-System Prediction Initiative (EPI) at the 2007 GEO Summit in Cape Town, South Africa (Shapiro et al. 2007).A major objective of EPI is to develop and foster collaborative research priorities between these international programs.The 2008 World Modeling Summit for Climate Prediction at the ECMWF in Reading, United Kingdom, recommended the creation of advanced climate research and computing facilities (Shukla et al. 2009).The WCC3, (www.wmo.int/wcc3/page_en.php) in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2009, proposed a Global Framework for Climate Services to strengthen production, delivery, and application of science-based climate prediction and services.More recently, the ESSP, involving four global environmental change research programs under the ICSU (i.e., Diversitas, IGBP, the IHDP, and WCRP) developed a closely related strategic vision for its program (Leemans et al. 2009).ICSU, in cooperation with the ISSC, is spearheading a process on Earth system visioning (www.icsu-visioning.org/) to develop a new vision and strategic framework for Earth system research (Walter et al. 2009).

Abstract:The Earth System Science Partnership (ESSP) was established in 2001 by four global environmental change (GEC) research programmes: DIVERSITAS, IGBP, IHDP and WCRP. ESSP facilitates the study of the Earth's environment as an integrated system in order to understand how and why it is changing, and to explore the implications of these changes for global and regional sustainability. Joint research projects on carbon dynamics, food, water and health have been established. As a result of an independent review, the ESSP developed a new strategy that will provide an internationally coordinated and holistic approach to Earth system science. The approach integrates natural and social sciences from regional to the global scale. The mainstay of the ESSP is to identify and define Earth system science challenges, enable integrative research to address these challenges, and build scientific capacity. The GEC research community also faces an increasing challenge to present research results in more accessible and informative ways to stakeholders, especially to policy-makers. In response, the ESSP is developing new services that include knowledge products, Earth system science fora, a synthesis journal and interdisciplinary collaborative research. Coping with GEC is an enormous challenge and one the world must respond to successfully. Our common goal is, therefore, to develop the essential knowledge base needed to respond effectively and quickly to the great challenge of GEC.

Abstract:An innovative Chinese space mission, the Earth 2.0 (ET) mission, is being developed to combine the transit and microlensing method together to search for Earth-sized exoplanets in the Galaxy, including the most precious ones-Earth 2.0s, i.e., habitable Earth-sized (0.8-1.25 Earth radii) planets orbiting solar type stars, cold and free-floating low-mass planets. ET's 6 transit telescopes will monitor a FoV of 500 square degrees (covering the Kepler field) continuously for at least four years and generate a huge database containing high-cadence and ultra-high photometry precision light curves of 1.2 million FGKM dwarfs. With such a high value database in hand, many unsolved issues in the exoplanet field and even stellar sciences will be well addressed. Besides looking for Earth 2.0s and constraining its occurrence rate, ET will be dedicated to map a much wider radius-period diagram of terrestrial-like exoplanets than ever and reveal how it depends on the stellar properties and environments. With the 4-yr legacy data of Kepler, ET will observe some planet systems for up to 8 years and catch additional components in a multi-planet system, e.g. cold Giant, cold sub-Earths, exomoons, exorings and even exocomets. Are exomoons and exocomets common in a planet system? What's the favorite number of planets in a multi-planet system? What's the most common orbital configuration of planet systems? With these new data, ET will deepen our understandings on how unique our Solar system is and how do multi-planet systems evolve. In addition to exoplanet sciences, ET's time series data will also benefit the studies in asteroseismology, archeology in the Galaxy, time-domain astrophysics and black hole science.

Abstract:ncreasing environmental challenges worldwide and a grow- ing awareness of global climate change indicate an urgent need for environmental scientists to conduct science in a new and bet- ter way. Existing large-scale environmental monitoring systems, with their coarse spatiotemporal resolution, are not only expen- sive, but they are incapable of revealing the complex interactions between atmospheric and land surface components with enough precision to generate accurate environmental system models. This is especially the case in mountainous regions with highly complex surfaces—the source of much of the world's fresh water and weather patterns. The amount of data required to understand and model these interactions is so massive (terabytes, and increas- ing) that no off-the-shelf solution allows scientists to easily man - age and analyze it. The Future of Earth Observation in Hydrology

Abstract:In just the past five years, the field of Earth observation has progressed beyond the offerings of conventional space agency based platforms to include a plethora of sensing opportunities afforded by CubeSats, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and smartphone technologies that are being embraced by both for-profit companies and individual researchers. Over the previous decades, space agency efforts have brought forth well-known and immensely useful satellites such as the Landsat series and the Gravity Research and Climate Experiment (GRACE) system, with costs typically on the order of one billion dollars per satellite and with concept-to-launch timelines on the order of two decades (for new missions). More recently, the proliferation of smartphones has helped to miniaturise sensors and energy requirements, facilitating advances in the use of CubeSats that can be launched by the dozens, while providing ultra-high (3-5 m) resolution sensing of the Earth on a daily basis. Start-up companies that did not exist five years ago now operate more satellites in orbit than any space agency, and at costs that are a mere fraction of the cost of traditional satellite missions. With these advances come new space-borne measurements, such as real-time high-definition video for tracking air pollution, storm-cell development, flood propagation, precipitation monitoring, or even for constructing digital surfaces using structure-from-motion techniques. Closer to the surface, measurements from small unmanned drones and tethered balloons have mapped snow depths, floods, and estimated evaporation at sub-meter resolutions, pushing back on spatio-temporal constraints and delivering new process insights. At ground level, precipitation has been measured using signal attenuation between antennae mounted on cell phone towers, while the proliferation of mobile devices has enabled citizen-scientists to catalogue photos of environmental conditions, estimate daily average temperatures from battery state, and sense other hydrologically important variables such as channel depths using commercially available wireless devices. Global internet access is being pursued via high altitude balloons, solar planes, and hundreds of planned satellite launches, providing a means to exploit the Internet of Things as an entirely new measurement domain. Such global access will enable real-time collection of data from billions of smartphones or from remote research platforms. This future will produce petabytes of data that can only be accessed via cloud storage and will require new analytical approaches to interpret. The extent to which today's hydrologic models can usefully ingest such massive data volumes is unclear. Nor is it clear whether this deluge of data will be usefully exploited, either because the measurements are superfluous, inconsistent, not accurate enough, or simply because we lack the capacity to process and analyse them. What is apparent is that the tools and techniques afforded by this array of novel and game-changing sensing platforms present our community with a unique opportunity to develop new insights that advance fundamental aspects of the hydrological sciences. To accomplish this will require more than just an application of the technology: in some cases, it will demand a radical rethink on how we utilise and exploit these new observing systems to enhance our understanding of the Earth and its linked processes.

Abstract:Increased pressure on the earth's resources has led to what is increasingly referred to as the climate crisis. While a whole range of environmental parameters have been transformed through such pressures, the effect of human activities on the climate is symbolic of the nature of the human footprint upon our planet and makes the lack of any coherent political leadership in most countries even more alarming. The discipline of Geography has a distinct advantage in developing a more holistic understanding of global environmental challenges in that it reaches across all the sciences (including social sciences and humanities). Geographical education therefore represents an important vehicle for citizens of all ages to help them understand the complexity of the sustainability goal and what can (and should) be done to achieve a more sustainable future. In this essay, I reflect on three approaches that are available to individuals and communities towards taking the steps to sustainability. The philosophy embodied by the International Year of Global Understanding (IYGU) is suggested as a particularly valuable tool for geography educators. The activities of the International Geographical Union (IGU) offer important opportunities for geographers to learn from each other and promote best practice in geographical education. As ‘the science for sustainability’, Geography has an increasingly important role to play in developing the knowledge and the skills to equip future generations with the tools to adapt to and mitigate potentially catastrophic global environmental change.

Abstract:Land degradation and pollution caused by population pressure and economic development pose a threat to the sustainability of the Earth’s surface, especially in tropical regions where a long history of chemical weathering has made the surface environment particularly fragile. Systematic baseline geochemical data provide a means of monitoring the state of the environment and identifying problem areas. Regional surveys have already been carried out in some countries, and with increased national and international funding they can be extended to cover the rest of the land surface of the globe. Preparations have been made, under the auspices of the IUGS, for the establishment of just such an integrated global database.

Towards a Collaborative Global Land Cover Information Service.

Abstract:The need and critical importance of global land cover and change information has been well recognized. Although rich collection of such information has been made available, the lack of necessary information services to support its easy access, analysis and validation makes it difficult to find, evaluate, select and reuse them through well-designed workflows. Aiming at promoting the development of the needed global land cover information services, this paper presents a conceptual framework for developing a Collaborative Global Land Cover Information Service (CoGland), followed by discussions on its implementation strategies. The framework supports connected and shared land cover and change web services around the world to address resource sharing, community service and cross-board collaboration needs. CoGland can benefit several recent international initiatives such as Future Earth, and many societal benefit areas. The paper further proposes that CoGland be developed within the framework of the Group on Earth Observations with the support of a number of key organizations such as the United Nations Expert Committee on Global Geospatial Information Management, the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, and International Society of Digital Earth. It is hoped that this paper can serve as a starting point for further discussions on CoGland developments.

Abstract:Recent advancements in Earth system science have been marked by the exponential increase in the availability of diverse, multivariate datasets characterised by moderate to high spatio-temporal resolutions. Earth System Data Cubes (ESDCs) have emerged as one suitable solution for transforming this flood of data into a simple yet robust data structure. ESDCs achieve this by organising data into an analysis-ready format aligned with a spatio-temporal grid, facilitating user-friendly analysis and diminishing the need for extensive technical data processing knowledge. Despite these significant benefits, the completion of the entire ESDC life cycle remains a challenging task. Obstacles are not only of a technical nature but also relate to domain-specific problems in Earth system research. There exist barriers to realising the full potential of data collections in light of novel cloud-based technologies, particularly in curating data tailored for specific application domains. These include transforming data to conform to a spatio-temporal grid with minimum distortions and managing complexities such as spatio-temporal autocorrelation issues. Addressing these challenges is pivotal for the effective application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches. Furthermore, adhering to open science principles for data dissemination, reproducibility, visualisation, and reuse is crucial for fostering sustainable research. Overcoming these challenges offers a substantial opportunity to advance data-driven Earth system research, unlocking the full potential of an integrated, multidimensional view of Earth system processes. This is particularly true when such research is coupled with innovative research paradigms and technological progress.

Abstract:Sustainability challenges demand solutions, and the pace of technological and scientific advances in physical geography and Earth observation have great potential to provide the information needed to address these challenges. This paper highlights five online tools and initiatives that are lifting barriers to address these challenges. The enviroGRIDS project in the Black Sea catchment demonstrates how the use of spatial data infrastructures can facilitate data sharing. Google Earth Engine is providing solutions to challenges of processing big data into usable information. Additionally, application programming interfaces allow outsiders to elaborate and iterate on programs to explore novel uses of data and models, as seen in the Berkeley Ecoinformatics Engine. Finally, collaborative mapping tools, such as Seasketch/MarineMap and the InVEST software suite, allow engagement within and between groups of experts and stakeholders for the development, deployment, and long-term impact of a project. Merging these different experiences can set a new standard for online information tools supporting sustainable development from evidence brought by physical geography combined with socioeconomic conditions.

Abstract:Environmental insight has emerged as a new scientific concept which incorporates the understanding that the Earth is made up of interworking subsystems and the acceptance that humans must act in harmony with the Earth’s dynamic balanced cycle. This Earth system competency represents the highest level of knowing and understanding in the geosciences community. Humans have an important role as participative beings in the Earth’s subsystems, and they must therefore acknowledge that life on Earth depends on a geoethically responsible management of the Earth system. Yet, the world is far from achieving sustainable development, making the role of the Earth science education in promoting education for sustainability even more relevant. The Earth system approach to education is designed to be an effective learning tool for the development of the innovative concept of environmental insight. Through a holistic view of planet Earth, students realize that humans have the ability to enjoy a sustainable life on our planet while minimising detrimental environmental impacts. There is growing evidence that citizens value science and need to be informed about Earth system problems such as climate change, resource efficiency, pandemics, sustainable use of water resources, and how to protect bio-geodiversity. By moving away from both traditional practices and traditional perceptions, environmental insight and geoethics will lead towards an education for sustainability that provides the citizens of Earth with the tools they need to address the full complexity of its urgent environmental concerns.

Abstract:The Deep-time Digital Earth (DDE) programme of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) has been developed to address the formidable challenge of so called ‘ long tail ’ data in the geosciences - the unstructured and inherently heterogeneous geoscience data that resides in institutions, universities and on individual geoscientists ’ computers. DDE ’ s vision is to transform Earth science by connecting and harmonising long tail deep-time data ‘ islands ’ to support broad-based scientific studies relevant to the entire Earth system. The results of these and other studies will help us understand Earth ’ s natural environment and help in the wise use of natural resources for the prosperity of nations and the quality of human life. This harmonisation is now possible through the digital revolution, but new protocols, platforms and programs are needed to secure compatible and interoperable databases, so that the vast amounts of existing (and new) deep-time geoscience data can be linked. Since the first DDE meeting in January 2019, great progress has been made in defining statutes and byelaws, governance structures and preliminary informatics and scientific aims.

Advances in Space Research

Abstract:This report is the response to a request by the Committee on Space Research of the International Council for Science to prepare a roadmap on observation and integrated Earth-system science for the coming ten years. Its focus is on the combined use of observations and modelling to address the functioning, predictability and projected evolution of interacting components of the Earth system on timescales out to a century or so. It discusses how observations support integrated Earth-system science and its applications, and identifies planned enhancements to the contributing observing systems and other requirements for observations and their processing. All types of observation are considered, but emphasis is placed on those made from space.
