Abstract:The majority of nuclear reactions in astrophysics involve unstable nuclei which are not fully accessible by experiments yet. Therefore, there is high demand for reliable predictions of cross sections and reaction rates by theoretical means. The majority of reactions can be treated in the framework of the statistical model (Hauser-Feshbach). The global parametrizations of the nuclear properties needed for predictions far off stability probe our understanding of the strong force and take it to its limit. The sensitivity of astrophysical scenarios to nuclear inputs is illustrated in the framework of a detailed nucleosynthesis study in type II supernovae. Abundances resulting from calculations in the same explosion model with two different sets of reaction rates are compared. Key reactions and required nuclear information are identified.

Abstract:There is a high demand for nuclear data in multidisciplinary subject like nuclear astrophysics. The two areas of nuclear physics which are most clearly related to one another are stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis. The necessity for nuclear data for astrophysical applications puts experimental methods as well as reliability and predicative ability of current nuclear models to the test. Despite recent, considerable advances, there are still significant issues and mysteries. Only a few characteristics of nuclear astrophysics are covered in the current work which include $^{20}$Ne(n,$\gamma$)$^{21}$Ne, $^{52}$Fe(n,$\gamma$)$^{53}$Fe, $^{53}$Fe(n,$\gamma$)$^{54}$Fe, $^{54}$Fe(n,$\gamma$)$^{55}$Fe and $^{55}$Fe(n,$\gamma$)$^{56}$Fe reactions which are important in stellar nucleosynthesis. The reaction rates are calculated using nuclear statistical model. These rates are subsequently fitted to polynomials of temperature T$_9$ in order to facilitate calculations for stellar nucleosynthesis.

Quantification of nuclear uncertainties in nucleosynthesis of elements beyond Iron

Abstract:Nucleosynthesis beyond Fe poses additional challenges not encountered when studying astrophysical processes involving light nuclei. Generally higher temperatures and nuclear level densities lead to stronger contributions of transitions on excited target states. This may prevent cross section measurements to determine stellar reaction rates and theory contributions remain important. Furthermore, measurements often are not feasible in the astrophysically relevant energy range. Sensitivity analysis allows not only to determine the contributing nuclear properties but also is a handy tool for experimentalists to interpret the impact of their data on predicted cross sections and rates. It can also speed up future input variation studies of nucleosynthesis by simplifying an intermediate step in the full calculation sequence. Large-scale predictions of sensitivities and ground-state contributions to the stellar rates are presented, allowing an estimate of how well rates can be directly constrained by experiment. The reactions 185W(n,gamma) and 186W(gamma,n) are discussed as application examples. Studies of uncertainties in abundances predicted in nucleosynthesis simulations rely on the knowledge of reaction rate errors. An improved treatment of uncertainty analysis is presented as well as a recipe for combining experimental data and theory to arrive at a new reaction rate and its uncertainty. As an example, it is applied to neutron capture rates for the s-process, leading to larger uncertainties than previously assumed.

Abstract:This chapter will go through the important nuclear reactions in stellar evolution and explosions, passing through the individual stellar burning stages and also explosive burning conditions. To follow the changes in the composition of nuclear abundances requires the knowledge of the relevant nuclear reaction rates. For light nuclei (entering in early stellar burning stages) the resonance density is generally quite low and the reactions are determined by individual resonances, which are best obtained from experiments. For intermediate mass and heavy nuclei the level density is typically sufficient to apply statistical model approaches. For this reason, while we discuss all burning stages and explosive burning, focusing on the reactions of importance, we will for light nuclei refer to the chapters by M. Wiescher, deBoer & Reifarth (Experimental Nuclear Astrophysics) and P. Descouvement (Theoretical Studies of Low-Energy Nuclear Reactions), which display many examples, experimental methods utilized, and theoretical approaches how to predict nuclear reaction rates for light nuclei. For nuclei with sufficiently high level densities we discuss statistical model methods used in present predictions of nuclear reaction cross sections and thermonuclear rates across the nuclear chart, including also the application to nuclei far from stability and fission modes.

Abstract:Nuclear reactions govern major aspects of the chemical evolution of galaxies and stars. Analytic study of the reaction rates and reaction probability integrals is attempted here. Exact expressions for the reaction rates and reaction probability integrals for nuclear reactions in the cases of nonresonant, modified nonresonant, screened nonresonant and resonant cases are given. Abstract:The quest for the origin of matter in the Universe had been the subject of philosophical and theological debates over the history of mankind, but quantitative answers could be found only by the scientific achievements of the last century. A first important step on this way was the development of spectral analysis by Kirchhoff and Bunsen in the middle of the 19$^{\rm th}$ century, which provided first insight in the chemical composition of the sun and the stars. The energy source of the stars and the related processes of nucleosynthesis, however, could be revealed only with the discoveries of nuclear physics. A final breakthrough came eventually with the compilation of elemental and isotopic abundances in the solar system, which are reflecting the various nucleosynthetic processes in detail. This review is focusing on the mass region above iron, where the formation of the elements is dominated by neutron capture, mainly in the slow ($s$) and rapid ($r$) processes. Following a brief historic account and a sketch of the relevant astrophysical models, emphasis is put on the nuclear physics input, where status and perspectives of experimental approaches are presented in some detail, complemented by the indispensable role of theory.

Abstract:Numerical values of charged-particle thermonuclear reaction rates for nuclei in the A=14 to 40 region are tabulated. The results are obtained using a method, based on Monte Carlo techniques, that has been described in the preceding paper of this series (Paper I). We present a low rate, median rate and high rate which correspond to the 0.16, 0.50 and 0.84 quantiles, respectively, of the cumulative reaction rate distribution. The meaning of these quantities is in general different from the commonly reported, but statistically meaningless expressions, "lower limit", "nominal value" and "upper limit" of the total reaction rate. In addition, we approximate the Monte Carlo probability density function of the total reaction rate by a lognormal distribution and tabulate the lognormal parameters {\mu} and {\sigma} at each temperature. We also provide a quantitative measure (Anderson-Darling test statistic) for the reliability of the lognormal approximation. The user can implement the approximate lognormal reaction rate probability density functions directly in a stellar model code for studies of stellar energy generation and nucleosynthesis. For each reaction, the Monte Carlo reaction rate probability density functions, together with their lognormal approximations, are displayed graphically for selected temperatures in order to provide a visual impression. Our new reaction rates are appropriate for bare nuclei in the laboratory. The nuclear physics input used to derive our reaction rates is presented in the subsequent paper of this series (Paper III). In the fourth paper of this series (Paper IV) we compare our new reaction rates to previous results.

Abstract:Radioactive isotopes produced in core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) provide useful insights into the underlying processes driving the collapse mechanism and the origins of elemental abundances. Their study generates a confluence of major physics research, including experimental measurements of nuclear reaction rates, astrophysical modeling, and $\gamma$-ray observations. Here we identify the key nuclear reaction rates to the nucleosynthesis of observable radioactive isotopes in explosive silicon-burning during CCSNe. Using the nuclear reaction network calculator SkyNet and current REACLIB reaction rates, we evolve temperature-density-time profiles of the innermost $0.45~M_\odot$ ejecta from the core collapse and explosion of a $12~M_\odot$ star. Individually varying 3403 reaction rates by factors of 100, we identify 141 reactions which cause significant differences in the isotopes of interest, namely, $^{43}$K, $^{47}$Ca, $^{44,47}$Sc, $^{44}$Ti, $^{48,51}$Cr, $^{48,49}$V, $^{52,53}$Mn, $^{55,59}$Fe, $^{56,57}$Co, and $^{56,57,59}$Ni. For each of these reactions, we present a novel method to extract the temperature range pertinent to the nucleosynthesis of the relevant isotope; the resulting temperatures lie within the range $T = 0.47$ to $6.15~$GK. Limiting the variations to within $1\sigma$ of STARLIB reaction rate uncertainties further reduces the identified reactions to 48 key rates, which can be used to guide future experimental research. Complete results are presented in tabular form.

Abstract:Nuclear beta decay rates are an essential ingredient in simulations of the astrophysical r-process. Most of these rates still rely on theoretical modeling. However, modern radioactive ion-beam facilities have allowed to measure beta half lives of some nuclei on or close to the r-process path. These data indicate that r-process half lives are in general shorter than anticipated in the standard theoretical predictions based on the Finite Range Droplet Model (FRDM). The data have also served as important constraints for improved predictions of half lives based on continuum QRPA calculations on top of the energy-density functional theory. Although these calculations are yet limited to spherical nuclei, they include the important r-process waiting point nuclei close to and at the neutron magic numbers $N=50, 82$ and 126. We have studied the impact of these new experimental and theoretical half lives on r-process nucleosynthesis within the two astrophysical sites currently favored for the r process: the neutrino-driven wind from the freshly born neutron star in a supernova explosion and the ejecta of the merger of two neutron stars. We find that the, in general, shorter beta decay rates have several important effects on the dynamics of r-process nucleosynthesis. At first, the matter flow overcomes the waiting point nuclei faster enhancing matter transport to heavier nuclei. Secondly, the shorter half lives result also in a faster consumption of neutrons resulting in important changes of the conditions at freeze-out with consequences for the final r-process abundances. Besides these global effects on the r-process dynamics, the new half lives also lead to some local changes in the abundance distributions.

Abstract:The astrophysical p process, which is responsible for the origin of the proton rich stable nuclei heavier than iron, was investigated using a full nuclear reaction network for a type II supernova explosion when the shock front passes through the O/Ne layer. Calculations were performed with a multi-layer model adopting the seed of a pre-explosion evolution of a 25 solar mass star. The reaction flux was calculated to determine the main reaction path and branching points responsible for synthesizing the proton rich nuclei. In order to investigate the impact of nuclear reaction rates on the predicted p-process abundances, extensive simulations with different sets of collectively and individually modified neutron-, proton-, alpha-capture and photodisintegration rates have been performed. These results are not only relevant to explore the nuclear physics related uncertainties in p-process calculations but are also important for identifying the strategy and planning of future experiments.

The Reaction Rate Sensitivity of Nucleosynthesis in Type II Supernovae

Abstract:We explore the sensitivity of the nucleosynthesis of intermediate mass elements (28 < A < 80) in supernovae derived from massive stars to the nuclear reaction rates employed in the model. Two standard sources of reaction rate data (Woosley et al. 1978; and Thielemann et al. 1987) are employed in pairs of calculations that are otherwise identical. Both include as a common backbone the experimental reactions rates of Caughlan & Fowler (1988). Two stellar models are calculated for each of two main sequence masses: 15 and 25 solar masses. Each star is evolved from core hydrogen burning to a presupernova state carrying an appropriately large reaction network, then exploded using a piston near the edge of the iron core as described by Woosley & Weaver (1995). The final stellar yields from the models calculated with the two rate sets are compared and found to differ in most cases by less than a factor of two over the entire range of nuclei studied. Reasons for the major discrepancies are discussed in detail along with the physics underlying the two reaction rate sets employed. The nucleosynthesis results are relatively robust and less sensitive than might be expected to uncertainties in nuclear reaction rates, though they are sensitive to the stellar model employed.

Abstract:New astronomical observations point to a nucleosynthesis picture that goes beyond what was accepted until recently. The intermediate " i " process was proposed as a plausible scenario to explain some of the unusual abundance patterns observed in metal-poor stars. The most important nuclear physics properties entering i -process calculations are the neutron-capture cross sections and they are almost exclusively not known experimentally. Here we provide the first experimental constraints on the Ba139(n,γ)Ba140 reaction rate, which is the dominant source of uncertainty for the production of lanthanum, a key indicator of i -process conditions. Abstract:The r -process progresses in the neutron-rich region of the nuclear chart and can possibly encounter nuclei having exotic structures with deformations, halos, and bubbles. Incorporating these properties is essential while calculating reaction rates, which in turn can affect astrophysical abundance estimates. In this work, we overview the recent developments in the arena of the sensitivity of nuclear physics inputs to abundance calculations. We then explore how including proper structures of a few light and medium-mass neutron-rich isotopes can potentially impact the estimates.

Abstract:$^{13}$N($p,\gamma$)$^{14}$O is one of the key reactions in the hot CNO cycle which occurs at stellar temperatures around $T_9$ $\geq$ 0.1. Up to now, some uncertainties still exist for the direct capture component in this reaction, thus an independent measurement is of importance. In present work, the angular distribution of the $^{13}$N($d,n$)$^{14}$O reaction at $E_{\rm{c.m.}}$ = 8.9 MeV has been measured in inverse kinematics, for the first time. Based on the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) analysis, the nuclear asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC), $C^{^{14}O}_{1,1/2}$, for the ground state of $^{14}$O $\to$ $^{13}$N + $p$ is derived to be $5.42 \pm 0.48$ fm$^{-1/2}$. The $^{13}$N($p,\gamma$)$^{14}$O reaction is analyzed with the R-matrix approach, its astrophysical S-factors and reaction rates at energies of astrophysical relevance are then determined with the ANC. The implications of the present reaction rates on the evolution of novae are then discussed with the reaction network calculations.

The 12N(p,g)13O reaction rates at the energies of astrophysical interests are estimated with the spectroscopic factor and asymptotic normalization coefficient methods. The present results show that the 12N(p,g)13O reaction may play an important role in x-ray bursts.

Abstract:We study the impact of astrophysically relevant nuclear isomers (astromers) in the context of the rapid neutron capture process (r-process) nucleosynthesis. We compute thermally mediated transition rates between long-lived isomers and the corresponding ground states in neutron-rich nuclei. We calculate the temperature-dependent beta-decay feeding factors which represent the fraction of material going to each of the isomer and ground state daughter species from the beta-decay parent species. We simulate nucleosynthesis by including as separate species nuclear excited states with measured terrestrial half-lives greater than 100 microseconds. We find a variety of isomers throughout the chart of nuclides are populated, and we identify those most likely to be influential. We comment on the capacity of isomer production to alter radioactive heating in an r-process environment.

Massive stars evolution with new C12+C12 nuclear reaction rate -- the core carbon-burning phase

Abstract:Nuclear reactions drive the stellar evolution and contribute to the stellar and galactic chemicals abundances. New determinations of the nuclear reaction rates for key fusion reactions of stellar evolution are now available, paving the way to improved stellar model predictions. We explore the impact of new C12+C12 reaction rates for massive stars evolution, structure, and nucleosynthesis during core carbon-burning phase. We analyse the consequences for stars of different masses including rotation-induced mixing. We computed a grid of massive stars at solar metallicity using the stellar evolution code GENEC. We explored the results using three different references for the rates, with or without rotation. We study the effect in terms of evolution, structure, and critical mass limit between intermediate and massive stars. We explored the consequences for nucleosynthesis during the core C-burning phase by means of a one-zone nucleosynthesis code. We confirm the significant impact of using the recent nuclear reaction rates following the hindrance hypothesis as well as the mass-dependent effect of a resonance at 2.14 MeV. This impacts the characteristics of the core of stars from the C-ignition and during all the core C-burning phase. The change of rates modifies the central nucleosynthesis during the core C-burning phase, resulting in an underproduction of s-process elements. The correct and accurate determination of the nuclear reaction rates, with especially the existence and location of resonances, impacts stellar evolution in many aspects affecting the model predictions. The choice of the nuclear reaction rates reference for the C12+C12 fusion reaction changes significantly the behaviour of the core during the C-burning phase. This choice is then to be taken carefully in order to interpret stellar evolution and fate of massive stars.

Stellar $β^{\pm}$ decay rates of iron isotopes and its implications in astrophysics

Abstract:$\beta$-decay and positron decay are believed to play a consequential role during the late phases of stellar evolution of a massive star culminating in a supernova explosion. Recently the microscopic calculation of weak-interaction mediated rates on key isotopes of iron was introduced using the proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (pn-QRPA) theory with improved model parameters. Here I discuss in detail the improved calculation of $\beta^{\pm}$ decay rates for iron isotopes ($^{54,55,56}$Fe) in stellar environment. The pn-QRPA theory allows a microscopic "state-by-state" calculation of stellar rates as explained later in text. Excited state Gamow-Teller distributions are much different from ground state and a microscopic calculation of decay rates from these excited states greatly increases the reliability of the total decay rate calculation specially during the late stages of stellar evolution. The reported decay rates are also compared with earlier calculations. The positron decay rates are in reasonable agreement with the large-scale shell model calculation. The main finding of this work includes that the stellar $\beta$-decay rates of $^{54,55,56}$Fe are around 3 -- 5 orders of magnitude smaller than previously assumed and hence irrelevant for the determination of the evolution of $Y_{e}$ during the presupernova phase of massive stars. The current work discourages the inclusion of $^{55,56}$Fe in the list of key stellar $\beta$-decay nuclei as suggested by former simulation results.
