Abstract:The role played by river networks in regional and global carbon cycle is receiving increasing attention. Despite the potential of radiocarbon measurements (14C) to elucidate sources and cycling of different riverine carbon pools, there remain large regions such as the climate-sensitive Tibetan Plateau for which no data are available. Here we provide new 14C data on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from three large Asian rivers (the Yellow, Yangtze and Yarlung Tsangpo Rivers) running on the Tibetan Plateau and present the carbon transportation pattern in rivers of the plateau versus other river system in the world. Despite higher discharge rates during the high flow season, the DOC yield of Tibetan Plateau rivers (0.41 gC m-2 yr-1) was lower than most other rivers due to lower concentrations. Radiocarbon ages of the DOC were older/more depleted (511±294 years before present, yr BP) in the Tibetan rivers than those in Arctic and tropical rivers. A positive correlation between radiocarbon age and permafrost watershed coverage was observed, indicating that 14C-deplted/old carbon is exported from permafrost regions of the Tibetan Plateau during periods of high flow. This is in sharp contrast to permafrost regions of the Arctic which export 14C-enriched carbon during high discharge periods.

Abstract:We evaluated variation in dissolved organic matter (DOM) export as a function of hydrology and land use from a large arid river basin in northwestern China. Two soil‐derived, humic‐like (C1 and C2) and three protein‐like fluorescence components (C3, C4, and C5) were identified. During high discharges, river water DOM had higher values of DOC concentration, percent humic fluorescence, and humification index, but lower values of fluorescence index and percent protein fluorescence than found at base flow, suggesting that flow paths shifted to shallower depths flushing out topsoil organic matter. Loading of DOC and soil‐derived humic fluorescence were driven largely by discharge, with values over 10 times higher during high discharges than at base flow. Furthermore, both δ13C‐DOC and C1 at high flows positively correlated with %agricultural lands within 1 km river buffers, demonstrating that near‐river agricultural activities enhanced storm export of soil DOM. At base flow, C4 positively correlated with %agricultural lands, showing stimulation of aquatic bacterial carbon production as a result of elevated nutrient inputs from agricultural lands. Percent contributions of humic fluorescence in groundwater varied with well depths in shallow wells, but this pattern was not observed for deeper groundwater, suggesting that humic DOM could serve as a water source tracer indicating deeper aquifers were isolated from river water and shallow groundwater. Together, our data demonstrate that hydrology and land use controlled the sources and amount of riverine DOM in this large agricultural basin and that regulating storm runoff and near‐river agricultural activities should be incorporated in ecosystem‐based management of water resources.

Abstract:Abstract Karst terrain (carbonate rocks) covers a vast land of 0.446 million km 2 in southwest China. Water yield and carbonate rocks weathering in this region have been receiving increased attention due to a large‐scale forest recovery. Using both hydrological measurements and forest inventories from 1986 to 2007 in the Houzhai karst basin (HKB), we analyzed the responses of water yield and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) export to forest recovery in southwest China. With implementation of both the Natural Forest Conservation Program (NFCP) and the Conversion of Farmland to Forests Program (CFFP), the fraction of forest area in HKB was increased from near zero to 18.9% during the study period, but the ratio of total water yield (surface and underground) to precipitation varied very little over the annual period, neither in wet season nor in dry season. By contrast, the concentration of DIC in water, especially in the surface water had a pronounced increase during the study period, with an increase of 0.53 and 0.25 g C m −3 yr −1 for surface water and underground water, respectively. As a result, total annual DIC export at mean annual rainfall significantly increased from the low to high forest area stage. This increase was largely driven by surface water during the wet season, presumably being related to biological activity. It was concluded that forest recovery in HKB had no significant effect on water yield, but resulted in more carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) dissolved in karst water accompanying with carbon uptake by forests. Our results suggested that implementations of both NFCP and CFFP had no shifted water yield regimes in southwest China; instead, they might have alleviated global climate change by increasing carbon uptake through combined biological processes and carbonate rocks weathering. Abstract:Large rivers are the main arteries for transportation of carbon to the ocean; yet, how hydrology and anthropogenic disturbances may change the composition and export of dissolved organic matter along large river continuums is largely unknown. The Yangtze River has a watershed area of 1.80 × 106 km2. It originates from the Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau and flows 6300 km eastward through the center of China. We collected samples (n = 271) along the river continuum and analyzed weekly samples at the most downstream situated gauging station in 2017–2018 and gathered long‐term (2006–2018) water quality data. We found higher gross domestic product, population density, and urban and agricultural land use downstream than upstream of the Three Gorges Dam, coinciding with higher dissolved organic carbon (DOC), UV absorption (a254), specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA254), parallel factor analysis‐derived C1–C5, aliphatic compounds, and lower a250:a365 and spectral slope (S275–295). Chemical oxygen demand, humic‐like C1–C2 and C6, and protein‐like C4 and C7 increased, while dissolved oxygen and ammonium decreased with increasing discharge at most of the sites studied, including the intensively monitored downstream site. The annual DOC fluxes were ca. 1.5–1.8 Tg yr−1, and 12–18% was biodegradable in a 28‐d bio‐incubation. Our results highlight that urbanization and stormwater periods enhanced the export of both terrestrial organic‐rich substances and household effluents from nearshore residential areas. Our study emphasizes the continued need to protect the Yangtze River watershed as increased organic carbon loading or altered composition and bio‐lability may change the ecosystem function and carbon cycling.

Abstract:The Qinghai-Tibetan plateau (QTP) stores a large amount of soil organic carbon and is the headwater region for several large rivers in Asia. Therefore, it is important to understand the influence of environmental factors on river water quality and the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) export in this region. We examined the water physico-chemical characteristics, DOC concentrations and export rates of 7 rivers under typical land cover types in the Three Rivers Headwater Region during August 2016. The results showed that the highest DOC concentrations were recorded in the rivers within the catchment of alpine wet meadow and meadow. These same rivers had the lowest total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations. The rivers within steppe and desert had the lowest DOC concentrations and highest TSS concentrations. The discharge rates and catchment areas were negatively correlated with DOC concentrations. The SUVA254 values were significantly negatively correlated with DOC concentrations. The results suggest that the vegetation degradation, which may represent permafrost degradation, can lead to a decrease in DOC concentration, but increasing DOC export and soil erosion. In addition, some of the exported DOC will rapidly decompose in the river, and therefore affect the regional carbon cycle, as well as the water quality in the source water of many large Asian rivers.

Abstract:We harmonized a large database of riverine in‐situ dissolved organic carbon (DOC) measurements and proposed a DOC modeling effort capable of reproducing the magnitude and trend of the riverine DOC concentration and flux across China. Results show that over the period 2001–2015, the DOC flux is significantly increasing at national scale, but the DOC concentration shows large regional differences. River discharge dominates the dynamics of DOC concentrations and fluxes in rivers across China while anthropogenic factors drive the change in DOC concentrations in the Yangtze River and Huaihe River. River transport of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to the ocean is a crucial but poorly quantified regional carbon cycle component. Large uncertainties remaining on the riverine DOC export from China, as well as its trend and drivers of change, have challenged the reconciliation between atmosphere‐based and land‐based estimates of China's land carbon sink. Here, we harmonized a large database of riverine in‐situ measurements and applied a random forest model, to quantify riverine DOC fluxes (FDOC) and DOC concentrations (CDOC) in rivers across China. This study proposes the first DOC modeling effort capable of reproducing well the magnitude of riverine CDOC and FDOC, as well as its trends, on a monthly scale and with a much wider spatial distribution over China compared to previous studies that mainly focused on annual‐scale estimates and large rivers. Results show that over the period 2001–2015, the average CDOC was 2.25 ± 0.45 mg/L and average FDOC was 4.04 ± 1.02 Tg/year. Simultaneously, we found a significant increase in FDOC (+0.044 Tg/year2, p = .01), but little change in CDOC (−0.001 mg/L/year, p > .10). Abstract:Dissolved organic carbon and inorganic carbon were measured simultaneously by high frequency sampling in the Hailuogou River. The mean dissolved organic carbon concentration at the glacier terminal was significantly higher than those at the forest catchment. Silicate rock weathering is an important source of stream dissolved inorganic carbon. The unexpected spatiotemporal stability of DC suggests that less frequent rates of sampling might be adequate to estimate carbon export. Dissolved carbon (DC) transported from headwater streams on the eastern Tibetan Plateau is a crucial component of the carbon cycles in the regional river. However, the spatiotemporal variability and sources of DC in these remote headwater streams remains unclear. An investigation into dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was conducted with high temporal resolution from a glacier terminus, a forest catchment, and the catchment outlet located on the eastern flank of Mt. Gongga, Southwest China. The results showed that (1) the mean DOC concentration at the glacier terminus (2.38 ± 0.71 mg L−1) was significantly higher than at the forest catchment (2.13 ± 0.49 mg L−1) and at the catchment outlet (2.17 ± 0.58 mg L−1), while the DIC concentration increased by 21.6% at the forest catchment and by 18.7% at the catchment outlet relative to that in the glacier terminus. (2) Compared to the monsoon season, DOC concentrations in the forest catchment decreased by 24.6% postmonsoon, and the seasonal variation of DOC concentrations was minor either at the glacier terminus or at the catchment outlet; relative to monsoon values, postmonsoon DIC concentrations increased by 14.9% and 28.8% at the forest catchment and catchment outlet, respectively. Precipitation and stream pH were identified as important factors influencing the seasonal variability of DC. (3) Silicate and carbonate weathering contributed 52.9 ± 12% and 44.4 ± 9%, respectively, to DIC generation in the forest catchment according to 13C analysis. This study provides a valuable dataset on the dynamics of DC in a region where data is sparse, which improves our understanding of DC transport in alpine regions. The unexpected spatiotemporal stability of DC suggests that less frequent rates of sampling might be adequate to estimate carbon export.
