Abstract:Icosahedral-B12 cage is a basic building block of various boron allotropes, and also it plays a vital role in augmenting the stability of fullerene-like boron nanoclusters. However, evolution of the compact core-shell structures is still a puzzle. Using a genetic algorithm combined with density functional theory calculations, we have performed global search for the lowest-energy structures of Bn clusters with n = 52–64, which reveals that bilayer and core-shell motifs frequently alternate as the ground state. Their structural stability is assessed, and the competition mechanism between various patterns is also elucidated. More interestingly, an unprecedented icosahedral B12-core half-covered structure is identified at B58, which bridges the gap between the smallest core-shell B4@B42 and the complete core-shell B12@B84 cluster. Our findings provide valuable insights into the bonding pattern and growth behavior of medium-sized boron clusters, which facilitate the experimental synthesis of boron nanostructures.

Abstract:Borane clusters and their derivatives have attracted extensive attention in inorganic chemistry due to their fascinating multi‐center bonding patterns and physicochemical properties. Here we report a systematic theoretical investigation on the geometry, electronic structure and chemical bonding of BnXn0/2‐ (n = 4, 6; X = H, F, Cl, Br, I, At, Ts) clusters, attempting to explore their bonding features, exceptional stability and the ligand effect. We find that the electronic structure and stability of BnXn0/2‐ clusters can be tuned by the size of the boron cage and electronegativity of the ligand. Fragment orbital energy matching and orbital overlap are of great importance to the covalency of the cluster. In addition to the ionic electrostatic interaction that dominates the bonding interaction and decreases as the ligand becomes heavier, multi‐center bonding covalency determined by the orbital interaction increases accordingly, attributing to the reducing electronegativity. The σ‐donations from the ligand to the boron cage as well as multi‐center two‐electron (nc‐2e) bonding contribute to the σ aromaticity and superb stability. This work reveals the foremost factors that determine the structure and stability of boron clusters, and provides insights into the nature of chemical bonding for species with boron cages and even bulk boron.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Because of their interesting structures and bonding and potentials as motifs for new nanomaterials, size-selected boron clusters have received tremendous interest in recent years. In particular, boron cluster anions (B-n(-)) have allowed systematic joint photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical studies, revealing predominantly two-dimensional structures. The discovery of the planar B-36 cluster with a central hexagonal vacancy provided the first experimental evidence of the viability of 2D borons, giving rise to the concept of borophene. The finding of the B-40 cage cluster unveiled the existence of fullerene-like boron clusters (borospherenes). Metal-doping can significantly extend the structural and bonding repertoire of boron clusters. Main-group metals interact with boron through s/p orbitals, resulting in either half-sandwich-type structures or substitutional structures. Transition metals are more versatile in bonding with boron, forming a variety of structures including half-sandwich structures, metal-centered boron rings, and metal-centered boron drums. Transition metal atoms have also been found to be able to be doped into the plane of 2D boron clusters, suggesting the possibility of metalloborophenes. Early studies of di-metal-doped boron clusters focused on gold, revealing ladder-like boron structures with terminal gold atoms. Recent observations of highly symmetric Ta2B6- and Ln(2)B(n)(-) (n = 7-9) clusters have established a family of inverse sandwich structures with monocyclic boron rings stabilized by two metal atoms. The study of size-selected boron and doped-boron clusters is a burgeoning field of research. Further investigations will continue to reveal more interesting structures and novel chemical bonding, paving the foundation for new boron-based chemical compounds and nanomaterials.

Abstract:One-dimensional chain structures of Bn (n = 6-16) are calculated by employing a 6-311G* basis set. The present calculations show that all the chain structures of interest have local minima with large binding energy per atom and short bond length. It is also found that many previous reported structures of B6 and B7 clusters are saddle points and the one-dimensional chain structures are the corresponding ground-state structures of B6 and B7 clusters.

Abstract:A highly efficient semi-empirical Hamiltonian has been developed and applied to model the compact boron clusters with the intermediate size. The Hamiltonian, in addition to the inclusion of the environment-dependent interactions and electron-electron correlations with the on-site charge calculated self-consistently, has contained the environment-dependent excitation orbital energy to take into account the atomic aggregation effect on the atomic orbitals. The Hamiltonian for boron has successfully characterized the electron deficiency of boron and captured the complex chemical bonding in various boron allotropes including the planer and quasi-planer, the convex, the ring, the icosahedra, the fullerene-like clusters, the two-dimensional monolayer sheets, and the alpha boron bulk, demonstrating its transferability, robustness, reliability, and has the predict power. The Hamiltonian has been applied to explore the existence of the compact structure of boron clusters with the intermediate size. Over 230 compact clusters including the random, the rhombohedra, and the spherical icosahedra structures are obtained with the size up to 768 atoms. It has been found that, energetically, clusters containing most compacted icosahedra B12 balls (i.e., the body-like rhombohedra clusters and trimmed spherical cut icosahedra clusters) are the most stable for large size (Natom >200) of boron clusters, while the spherical cut icosahedra, random structures, and cage-like boron clusters are competitive for the small or intermediate size (24 < Natom <200) of boron clusters.

Abstract:The geometry, stability, and electronic properties of B@Co12@Bn and Co13@Bn clusters with a wide range n=55 up to 92 are studied by ab initio calculations. We find that B@Co12@B80 and Co13@B80 with closed B80 shell are two stable magic clusters with nearly perfect icosahedral symmetry, and B@Co12@B80 is more stable than Co13@B80 energetically. The strong core-shell bonding yields a very large energy gain of ∼30 eV. This high stability is attributed to the favorable closed-shell atomic and electronic structures. The B@Co12@B80 exhibits a large highest occupied and lowest unoccupied energy gap (0.96 eV) that is close to the value for isolated B80 fullerene.
Quasi-planar Aromatic B36 and B36(-) Clusters: All-Boron Analogues of Coronene.

Abstract:Flat boron has recently emerged as a fascinating concept in cluster science. Here we present computational evidence for the quasi-planar all-boron aromatic B-36 (C-6v, (1)A(1)) and B-36(-) (C-2v, (2)A(1)) clusters, established as the global-minimum structures on the basis of Stochastic Surface Walking (SSW) searches. The energetics for low-lying isomeric structures are evaluated using the validated density-functional method at the PBEO0/6-311+G* level. Our global-minimum structures are in line with a recent report (Z. A. Piazza et at, Nat. Commun., 2014, 5, 3113). These structures consist of two-dimensional close-packing boron with a perfect hexagonal hole at the center, which may serve as molecular models for the monolayer boron cc sheet. Chemical bonding analysis indicates that B-36 and B-36(-) are all-boron analogues of coronene (C24H12), featuring concentric dual pi aromaticity with an inner pi sextet and an outer pi sextet. The hydrogenated B36H6 (C-6v, (1)A(1)) model cluster shows similar bonding properties, which possesses concentric triple aromaticity with inner pi, outer pi, and outer sigma sextets.
B26−: the Smallest Planar Boron Cluster with a Hexagonal Vacancy and a Complicated Potential Landscape

Abstract:Anionic boron clusters have been systematically investigated both experimentally and theoretically up to 30 atoms and have all been proved to be planar or quasi-planar (2D) in their global minima. However, the B26− cluster has remained elusive in this size range up to now, because of its complicated potential landscape. Here we present a joint photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and first-principles study on the structures and bonding of this seemingly enigmatic cluster. Extensive global minimum searches, followed by high-level calculations and Gibbs free energy corrections, reveal that at least three 2D isomers, I (C1, 2A), II (C1, 2A), and III (C1, 2A), could contribute to the observed PE spectrum for the B26− cluster. Isomer I, which has the lowest free energy at finite temperatures, is found to dominate the experimental spectrum and represents the smallest 2D boron cluster with a hexagonal vacancy. Distinct spectral features are observed for isomer III, which has a pentagonal hole and is found to contribute to the measured PE spectrum as a minor species. Isomer II with a close-packed triangular 2D structure, which is the global minimum at 0K, may also contribute to the observed spectrum as a minor species. Chemical bonding analyses show that the principal isomer I can be viewed as an all-boron analog of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon C17H11+ in terms of the π bonds.

Abstract:The geometry structures, electronic properties, and chemical bonding of neutral, anionic and cationic alloy B4Aln (n = 1–5) clusters series were systematically studied by using density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d) level of theory for geometry optimization and using coupled cluster single point energy calculations at the CCSD(T)/6-311+G(2df)//B3LYP/6-311+G(d) level of theory. Comprehensive structure search and calculations demonstrate that the Al atoms tend to occupy the periphery sites of all alloy clusters, and the lowest–energy structures prefer low spin states (singlet or doublet). For small alloy cluster with total number of atoms ≤6, the clusters display the rare Anti-Van’t Hoff/Le Bel motifs planar tetracoordinate boron (ptB) and planar pentacoordinate boron (ppB), whereas, for total number of atoms ≥7, it shows 3D configuration. To evaluate the stabilities and electronic properties of the global minimum isomers of each stoichiometry at different charge states, the binding energy, fragmentation energy, second–order difference of the total energy, HOMO–LUMO gap, ionization potential, and electron affinity have been evaluated. We find that for anionic and cationic alloy B4Aln −/+ (n = 1–5) clusters, the odd–n systems are more stable than the even–n ones. AdNDP analyses of the chemical bonding of the global minimum structures indicate that the classical 2c–2e bonds and multicenter nc–2e (n = 3–9) delocalized bonds are responsible for the stability of boron–aluminum mixed alloy clusters.

Abstract:The structures of B n N 20 − n ( n = 6−18), the clusters of boron nitride, are investigated by the density functional theory calculations. The structures of the obtained low-lying isomers can be described by the following six prototypes: single ring, double ring, three-ring, graphitic-like sheet, fullerene and others. B 10 N 10 is demonstrated to be the most stable cluster against the nonstoichiometric ones. Nonzero magnetic moments, 1.999, 1.998, 2.000, 3.999 and 1.999 μ B respectively, are found in five B n N 20− n ( n = 6, 7, 11, 12, 13) clusters. Further analysis indicates that the magnetic moment of the B 6 N 14 cluster is mainly originated from the N atoms, while those of others are from the B atoms. The magnetic moment are finally attributed to the interesting issues of the 2 p electrons due to the breaking of local symmetries, the change of coordination number, charge distribution and orbital hybridization.
Planar Hexagonal B(36) As a Potential Basis for Extended Single-Atom Layer Boron Sheets.

Abstract:Boron is carbon's neighbour in the periodic table and has similar valence orbitals. However, boron cannot form graphene-like structures with a honeycomb hexagonal framework because of its electron deficiency. Computational studies suggest that extended boron sheets with partially filled hexagonal holes are stable; however, there has been no experimental evidence for such atom-thin boron nanostructures. Here, we show experimentally and theoretically that B36 is a highly stable quasiplanar boron cluster with a central hexagonal hole, providing the first experimental evidence that single-atom layer boron sheets with hexagonal vacancies are potentially viable. Photoelectron spectroscopy of B36(-) reveals a relatively simple spectrum, suggesting a symmetric cluster. Global minimum searches for B36(-) lead to a quasiplanar structure with a central hexagonal hole. Neutral B36 is the smallest boron cluster to have sixfold symmetry and a perfect hexagonal vacancy, and it can be viewed as a potential basis for extended two-dimensional boron sheets.
Structural stability, electronic properties and graphical interatomic interactions of anionic boron clusters doped with one sodium atom

Abstract:Predicting the structure of pure boron and its doped clusters based on global structure search technology, and exploring its structural evolution model and bonding properties have been the focus of research. In the present study, the CALYPSO software and DFT calculations were used by us to search the structure of the previously unreported anionic NaBn – (n = 1–12) clusters system that determined its ground-state structures. Through structural analysis, we found that NaBn – (n = 1–12) clusters maintain a planar evolution pattern, and doped Na atoms are located in the convex position of the structure. In the stability analysis, we found two molecular wheel structures NaB7 – and NaB8 – clusters, and the charge transfer analysis showed that the position of doped Na atoms greatly affected the bonding inside the clusters. The analysis of the bonding properties of the NaB7 – and NaB8 – clusters shows that the Na-3s, Na-3p, and B-2p orbitals have high contributions, and the atoms in the NaB7 – and NaB8 – clusters have close interactions, forming strong Na-B and B-B covalent bonds. Finally, the interaction region indicator methodology suggests that not only chemical bonding interactions but also strong–weak interactions exist between B atoms of the NaB7 – and NaB8 – clusters.

Chemical Bonding and Dynamic Structural Fluxionality of a Boron-Based Na5B7 Sandwich Cluster

Abstract:Doping alkali metals into boron clusters can effectively compensate for the intrinsic electron deficiency of boron and lead to interesting boron-based binary clusters, owing to the small electronegativity of the former elements. We report on the computational design of a three-layered sandwich cluster, Na5B7, on the basis of global-minimum (GM) searches and electronic structure calculations. It is shown that the Na5B7 cluster can be described as a charge-transfer complex: [Na4]2+[B7]3−[Na]+. In this sandwich cluster, the [B7]3− core assumes a molecular wheel in shape and features in-plane hexagonal coordination. The magic 6π/6σ double aromaticity underlies the stability of the [B7]3− molecular wheel, following the (4n + 2) Hückel rule. The tetrahedral Na4 ligand in the sandwich has a [Na4]2+ charge-state, which is the simplest example of three-dimensional aromaticity, spherical aromaticity, or superatom. Its 2σ electron counting renders σ aromaticity for the ligand. Overall, the sandwich cluster has three-fold 6π/6σ/2σ aromaticity. Molecular dynamics simulation shows that the sandwich cluster is dynamically fluxional even at room temperature, with a negligible energy barrier for intramolecular twisting between the B7 wheel and the Na4 ligand. The Na5B7 cluster offers a new example for dynamic structural fluxionality in molecular systems.

Abstract:The structures, stabilities, and potential energy surfaces (PESs) of the low-lying isomers of planar BnN (n=1–6) clusters are searched at the CCSD(T)/6-311+G(d)//B3LYP/6-311+G(d) level. The lowest-energy structures (1a–6a) of planar BnN (n=1–6) are located. It is worthy to note a structural transition occurring in the series of BnN (n=1–6) clusters upon increase of the boron content from n=3 to n=4. The evolution of the binding energy per atom, incremental binding energy, and second order difference of total energy with the size of BnN reveals that the lowest-energy isomers 2a (B2N) and 5a (B5N) are highly stable. Results demonstrate that the stability of lowest-energy isomers of BnN (n=1–6) is attributed to the delocalized π, σ-radial, and σ-tangential molecular orbitals (MOs) interactions. The isomers of BnN (n=4–6) with planar multicoordinate boron or nitrogen are unfavorable in energy. The double aromaticity of isomer 3d of B3N is discussed in terms of valence molecular orbital, electron localization function (ELF) and adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP), and NICS analyses. Interestingly, some isomer pairs can be transferred directly to each other by two or three isomerization channels. Some isomers of BnN with large thermodynamic and kinetic stability are predicted in terms of their total energies and potential energy surfaces, which is important for future experimental studies.
B₃₀]⁻: a quasiplanar chiral boron cluster

Abstract:Chirality is vital in chemistry. Its importance in atomic clusters has been recognized since the discovery of the first chiral fullerene, the D-2 symmetric C-76.([1]) A number of gold clusters have been found to be chiral,([2]) raising the possibility to use them as asymmetric catalysts. The discovery of clusters with enantiomeric structures is essential to design new chiral materials with tailored chemical and physical properties.([3]) Herein we report the first inherently chiral boron cluster of [B-30](-) in a joint photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical study. The most stable structure of [B-30](-) is found to be quasiplanar with a hexagonal hole. Interestingly, a pair of enantiomers arising from different positions of the hexagonal hole are found to be degenerate in our global minimum searches and both should co-exist experimentally because they have identical electronic structures and give rise to identical simulated photoelectron spectra.
Structures and chemical bonding of B6O50/−/2−: The first boron oxide clusters with five-membered ring and their structural diversity

Abstract:Based upon global-minimum searches and first-principles electronic structural calculations, we present the perfectly planar B6O50/−/2− (1–3) systems. Notably, the C2v B6O50/− (1–2) clusters mark a groundbreaking advancement as the first boron oxide clusters to feature a five-membered ring. Both structures exhibit remarkable similarity, each characterized by a central B3O2 ring surrounded by three terminal BO groups. However, a notable difference lies in the bond lengths within the B3O2 core, which are uniform in the former but uneven in the latter. Detailed canonical molecular orbital and AdNDP analyses reveal the delocalized π bonds over the B3O2 ring, affirming the π aromaticity of B6O5−. The Cs B6O52− (3) cluster showcases a chain-like arrangement with three terminal BO groups and a typical OBO group linked to a B2 core, emphasizing the crucial role of electrons in shaping the structure. Detailed chemical bonding analyses reveal the presence of dual three-center four-electron (3c–4e) π hyperbonds in 3, shedding further light on its unique bonding characteristics. Moreover, this study comprehensively extends the B(BO)n0/− (n = 1–5) series and provides valuable perspectives on their structural evolution.

Abstract:A new two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic semiconducting boron structure, named as M-B28, is predicted using ab initio evolutionary structure searching. First-principles calculations show that M-B28 has a lower energy than other 2D magnetic boron structures and is dynamically stable. The unpaired electrons from the caps of B26 clusters lead to magnetism in M-B28, while making its highest valence band flat and isolated. The Néel temperature and mechanical properties of M-B28 are evaluated with the Ising model and strain-stress method, respectively, revealing a transition temperature of 32 K and the ideal strengths of 43.7 N/m along x direction and 38.5 N/m along y direction.

Abstract:Unlike graphene and other 2D materials, borophene is 2D polymorphic with diverse hexagonal holes (HHs)‐triangles ratios and the concentrations of HHs are highly substrate dependent. Here, we systematically explored the evolution of boron cluster on Ag(111) surface, B N @Ag(111) (N=1~36), to understand the nucleation of 2D boron sheet on metal surface. Our calculation showed that, with the size increasing, the structures of most stable B N clusters undergo an evolution from compact triangular lattice, such as double‐chains or triple‐chains, to the ones with mixed triangular‐hexagonal lattices. The first single‐HH appears at N=12 and the first double‐HH appears at N=27. The stability of large B N clusters with mixed structures is derived from the charge transfer between triangular lattice and the HHs, as well as between the substrates and the B N clusters. Our results provide a deep understanding on the formation of small boron clusters in the initial nucleation stage of borophene growth.
