Abstract:Untethered small-scale machines (USSMs) that can actively adjust their motion, deformation, and collective states in response to external stimuli have gained enormous interest in various manipulation, sensing, and biomedical applications. Because they can be efficiently operated in confined and tortuous environments, USSMs are capable of conducting wireless microrobotic manipulation tasks that tethered machines find hard to achieve. Over the past decade of development, significant research...

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: How to use untethered small - scale machines (USSMs) to achieve wireless manipulation tasks on a micro - scale, especially precise operations in complex environments. Specifically, the paper focuses on the latest progress in micro - robot manipulation by USSMs at the individual, multiple, and collective levels, and explores the applications of these technologies in the fields of micro - robots and biomedicine. ### Background and Challenges 1. **Limitations of Traditional Micro - manipulation Technologies** - Traditional micro - manipulation technologies usually need to operate within predefined areas and it is difficult to achieve on - site operations, especially when operating in vivo. - The direct - contact manipulation method limits the application scenarios, especially when a non - contact operation scheme is required. - Wireless manipulation technologies need to obtain the controlled motion state of small objects, usually by applying an external field, but this method has problems of slow response speed and low precision. 2. **Advantages of Untethered Systems** - Untethered systems (USSMs) can operate efficiently in restricted and tortuous environments and are able to perform wireless micro - robot manipulation tasks that are difficult for wired machines to complete. - USSMs can be wirelessly driven by multiple external power sources (such as magnetic force, sound waves, electric fields, and light), and have high - precision and multi - degree - of - freedom motion capabilities. ### Research Objectives The main objective of the paper is to summarize and discuss the latest progress in USSMs for micro - robot manipulation, especially in the following aspects: 1. **Manipulation of Individual Machines** - Achieve wireless manipulation of a single USSM through methods such as physical interaction, hydrodynamic interaction, capillary interaction, and hybrid effects. - For example, magnetic micro - robots can push, pull, and grasp objects through an external magnetic field to achieve complex two - dimensional and three - dimensional assemblies. 2. **Coordinated Manipulation of Multiple Machines** - Research the independent driving and parallel control of multiple USSMs, as well as cooperative manipulation. - Achieve collaborative manipulation through multiple modular USSMs to improve manipulation efficiency and flexibility. 3. **Manipulation of Collective Machines** - Explore the collective behavior of multiple USSMs to achieve adaptive manipulation and reconfigurable manipulation. - In complex, restricted, and dynamic environments, achieve efficient micro - robot manipulation through collective control strategies. ### Application Prospects The paper also discusses the requirements of USSMs in practical applications, including design, driving, motion control, positioning, and manipulation precision. Future research directions include: - **Intelligence and Autonomy**: Develop USSM systems with higher autonomy and intelligence levels that can perform precise manipulation in complex environments. - **Medical Imaging Integration**: Combine USSM systems with medical imaging modalities to achieve in - vivo intelligent micro - robot manipulation. - **Multifunctional Manipulation**: Design multifunctional USSMs that can perform multiple tasks to adapt to different application scenarios. In conclusion, this paper aims to provide guidance and inspiration for future scientific research and applications by summarizing the latest progress in USSMs for micro - robot manipulation.
