Abstract:The highly active and durable design of heterogeneous catalysts holds vital importance in the popularization of Fenton-like process for wastewater remediation. In this study, we successfully fabricated magnetic N-doped graphitic carbon (NC) encapsulated Fe3C/Fe nanoparticles, designated as Fe3C/Fe@NC-2.8, with a two-step pyrolysis method. We employed chitosan as a green precursor of NC, which is used as a heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst to degrade refractory organic pollutants. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the built-in electric field from the shell to core promoted electron transfer from NC to Fe3C/Fe, and thereby improved regeneration of Fe(II) and H2O2 activation. Because of the strong synergistic effects of the dual-reaction regions of Fe and Fe3C, as well as the core-shell structure advantages, the optimized Fe3C/Fe@NC rapidly degraded the typical refractory organic pollutants, and showed a much higher activity than the reference Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 samples. The total organic carbon removal efficiency of bisphenol A reached 70 % after reaction for 60 min. In addition, Fe3C/Fe@NC-2.8 possessed trace Fe leaching and satisfactory magnetically separable ability. This work provides mechanistic and practical perspectives for the development of advanced catalysts for recalcitrant pollutant treatment.

Abstract:Fe3C/Fe decorated N-doped magnetic carbon materials (denoted as Fe3C/Fe@N-C-x) were successfully fabricated via facile one-pot calcination of MIL-88B(Fe) with a green precursor of melamine. Benefiting from the co-existence of sp2-hybridized C–π moieties, oxygen-containing groups (CO and O–CO), N-doping species and ferreous nanoparticles (FNPs), the as-obtained Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 exhibited excellent activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for ultrafast elimination of various emerging organic contaminants with high mineralization capacities. Inspired by the unique nanotube morphology and encapsulation of FNPs, the Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 possessed trace Fe leaching and can be magnetically separated for an easy recycling. Combining with competitive radical scavenging tests, electron spin resonance (ESR), electrochemical analysis and in-situ Raman spectra, the singlet oxygen (1O2) and electron-transfer can be accounted for the organic pollutant removal. Because of that, the Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 exhibited good resistance to inorganic anions and natural organic matters (NOMs). It was fascinating that Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 achieved satisfactory treatment efficiency for real pharmaceutical wastewater.

Abstract:Iron-mediated activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) has been widely investigated for recalcitrant pollutants. However, maximizing the dispersion degree of the active iron sites in the catalysts is still a great challenge and attracting tremendous attention. Herein, we demonstrated that well-dispersed single atomic Fe sites embedded into N-doped porous carbon (Fe-SA-N-C), which derived from chemically Fe-doped zeolitic imidazolate frameworks, could work as Fe-based catalyst for efficient catalytic oxidation of recalcitrant organics via PMS activation. As expected, Fe-SA-N-C exhibited remarkably higher degradation activity (8.1 times faster) to BPA (a model pollutant) than that of Fe based nanoparticles-loaded N-doped carbon (Fe-NP-N-C). The sufficient Fe-N-x sites with single Fe atom as the building units were proposed to be the main active sites for PMS activation. Based on that, unlike the traditional sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes, BPA degradation was achieved via high-valent iron-oxo species. More particularly, it could be used over a wide range of pH 3.0-7.5 with almost no loss of degradation efficiency. This study will provide insights into the design of heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts.

Abstract:Many wastewater treatment methods have been developed because large amounts of organic pollutants (OPs) entered into the water bodies and adsorption is one of the classic and important technologies. Recently, magnetic adsorbents have garnered extensive attention due to the high efficiency and distinctive recyclability. The control of their structures and surface properties is crucial. Here, the magnetite@carbon (Fe 3 O 4 @C) composite was prepared by coupling microreactor and pyrolysis reactor. The structures and surface properties of the Fe 3 O 4 @C were effectively adjusted by changing the pyrolysis temperature and Na 2 CO 3 concentration. The Fe 3 O 4 @C composite prepared at 800°C of pyrolysis temperature with 1 mol·L −1 of Na 2 CO 3 concentration has lipophilicity and the highest adsorption capacity of 92# gasoline among those adsorbents, which is as high as 7.6 g·g −1 . The Fe 3 O 4 @C synthesized at 500°C with 1 mol·L −1 of Na 2 CO 3 concentration has hydrophilicity and the highest adsorption capacity of Rhodamine B and Methyl Blue. The saturated adsorption capacities are about 166 and 301 mg·g −1 , respectively. Fe 3 O 4 @C can be easily separated from wastewater and simply regenerated with less capacity loss after five cycles. The results show that the Fe 3 O 4 @C prepared by this method could be suitable for the removal of different OPs by adjusting the preparation conditions.

Abstract:Nano-Fe0 embedded in N-doped carbon architectures (Fe0@N-C) were used as a peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for the mineralization of organic pollutants. Fe0@N-C was synthesized through a MOF-mediated recrystallization approach. Fe0@N-C exhibited high activity and reusability, better than that of most conventional metal catalysts. Further, the influences of some representative factors for the PMS activation were comprehensively analyzed and optimized. The enhanced performance of Fe0@N-C was primarily ascribed to abundant reactive oxygen species, especially 1O2, released in the oxidation process at the solid/aqueous interface. Nano-Fe0 wrapped with N-doped graphitic layers could preferentially generate effective Fe0 and Fe-Nx active sites with the electronic structure reconstruction, endowing the outstanding catalytic activity. The unique porous carbon structure not only protected the embedded nano-Fe0 from poisoning or leaching, but also provided suitable mass transfer channels and also promoted electron tunneling efficiency. These outstanding characteristics manifested Fe0@N-C had promising potential for organic pollutant degradation.

Abstract:Adsorption, as a simple and efficient water treatment technology, faces the problem that it can only transfer but not fully mineralize pollutants. Transition metal activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) exhibit high catalytic activity, but leakage of metal ions poses potential health risks to the environment. To solve these problems, we ingeniously designed a micro−nanoreactor structure with glutaraldehyde crosslinked chitosan as the backbone and encapsulated MOF−derived Co−Fe nitrogen−doped graphitic carbon as the activated PMS reaction center (Co−Fe/NC@GCS). Due to its remarkable adsorption capacity, high concentration sulfamethoxazole could be efficiently enriched through electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding, and a small amount of PMS could be rapidly attracted and activated. Meanwhile, the synergistic mechanism of adsorption−PMS activation was also analyzed, and the degradation pathway of sulfamethoxazole was expounded. This study aims to develop a new strategy for the removal of emerging organic pollutants in water with such a system with strong adsorption and catalytic capabilities.

Abstract:Single-atom Fe catalysis has exhibited remarkable potentials in water treatment applications. However, rational design of single-atom Fe catalysts with controlled catalytic performance is still challenging, due to the lack of the fundamental understanding on the corelated factors of structure, property, and catalytic behavior. Herein, PMS activation performance of the single-atom Fe sites is successfully boosted by molecular-engineering on the polymeric carbon nitride (CN) framework. Benzene-1,4-diamine regulates the polymerization process, and rises the ratio of carbon/nitrogen; the valence of the single-atom Fe is thereby positively shifted, leading to favorable thermal dynamics of the high-valent Fe(IV)=O involved oxidation reaction . The carbon-rich CN supported single-atom Fe catalyst thus exhibits remarkable performance in selective degradation of a series of organic pollutants via high-valent Fe(IV)=O oxidation pathway. The findings in this work implicate the significance of electronic properties of the support as one of the essential descriptors for a robust single-atom catalyst for pollutants abatement.

Abstract:The magnetic coal gangue (CG)-based catalysts were successfully prepared by impregnation-calcination method with iron (Fe) and nitrogen (N) co-doping for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, illustrating excellent catalytic property with 100.00 % removal rate of benzo[ a ]pyrene (BaP). Additionally, Fe/N co-doped CG catalysts (Fe-N-CG) possess desirable performance against co-existing anions and organic matter (HA), with a nearly 80.00 % removal rate in actual water systems. The mechanism of activating PMS and removing BaP was comprehensively analyzed through a series of characterizations and experiments, proving that the Fe and N double reaction sites could enhance the contribution of radical paths and non-radical paths for BaP degradation. Finally, the safety and prospects for practical environmental remediation via Fe-N-CG for PMS activation were further evaluated by ECOSAR toxicity analysis software and mung bean growth experiments. In summary, the development of Fe-N-CG widened the high-value utilization of CG and supplied a deep insight into the restoration of organically polluted environments.

Abstract:In this study, novel Fe3C-porous carbon composites (Fe3C-C) were prepared via the pyrolysis of Fe2O3 loaded MOF-74(Zn), which could integrate both strong adsorption properties and excellent peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activating performance for the removal of bisphenol A (BPA) in water. Results indicated that the composite obtained at 1000 °C (Fe3C-C1000) exhibited optimal catalytic capability. Specifically, 0.1 mM BPA could be completely removed by 0.1 g/L Fe3C-C1000 within 10 min after the adsorption enrichment. Afterwards, the mechanism of Fe3C-C/PMS system was unveiled based on quenching tests, electron spin resonance analysis, electrochemical analysis, PMS consumption detection and solvent exchange (H2O to D2O) test. The BPA degradation pathways were also analyzed through identifying its decomposition intermediates. Results showed that the Fe3C and porous carbon constituents could activate PMS via radical and non-radical mechanisms respectively, and BPA was readily degraded through both pathways. Additionally, it was found that the Fe3C-C1000/PMS system could maintain conspicuous catalytic performance in a variety of complicated water matrices with wide pH application range and long-time use stability. This study suggests a new insight for the design and development of novel catalyst which can be used for the removal of refractory organic contaminants with high concentrations in water media.

Abstract:Organic pollutant control is a highly significant global concern regarding human health and environmental remediation. Designing highly efficient photocatalysts for use in the removal of organic pollutants in the environment has attracted great interest in recent years. Here, a class of metal–organic framework nanoplatforms based on Fe3O4@UiO-66 with versatile combination modes are designed and synthesized for the effective detoxification of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), one of the high-risk mycotoxins. The composite systems achieved efficient adsorption and photodegradation of AFB1, benefiting from UiO-66’s porous structure and Fe3O4’s catalytic enhancement. A high AFB1 degradation rate of up to 90% is obtained upon using these hybrid materials. The abundant hydroxyl-free radicals produced during the photocatalytic process drive the disruption of the AFB1 structure and thereby reduce its toxicity. In addition, SL- and LS-Fe3O4@UiO-66 catalysts can be facilely recycled, maintaining more than 80% of the catalytic capacity after three cycles. Moreover, these magnetic nanocatalysts have also demonstrated excellent generalizability, achieving over 90% removal of several organic contaminants including pesticides and dyes in solution.

Abstract:The novel Ni/ZIF‐8/ZnO nanoreactor array is grown on carbon fiber cloth (CFC). The efficient activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) performance of Ni/ZIF‐8/ZnO/CFC results from the high density of active sites, high adsorbability, and dispersibility structure, which concentrates catalytic and adsorptive sites within a confined space. The catalytic oxidation of toxic organic pollutants in water requires enhanced efficiency for commercial applications. A ZnO nanorod array grown on a carbon fiber cloth (CFC) serves as the zinc source to ensure that the Ni/ZIF‐8/ZnO nanoreactor is constructed. The Ni/ZIF‐8/ZnO/CFC nanoreactor efficiently activates peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation owing to its high density of active sites, high adsorbability, and dispersibility structure, which concentrates catalytic and adsorptive sites within a confined space. Experimental and theoretical calculations clearly show that the introduction of Ni is beneficial for improving the adsorption of BPA and the activation of PMS. The synergistic mechanism of BPA adsorption–PMS activation is also investigated, and the degradation pathway of BPA is examined. Moreover, a filter catalytic unit is constructed using Ni/ZIF‐8/ZnO/CFC to achieve a continuous zero discharge of BPA, which is convenient for nanocatalyst recycling. This study aims to develop a new strategy for the removal of emerging organic pollutants from water using a system with strong adsorption and catalytic capabilities.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit high chemical stability and porosity, and have been widely applied in various fields including selective adsorption and separation, sensors, and catalysis. When combined with Fe3O4, they effectively address issues such as aggregation of Fe3O4 particles and the difficulty in recovering MOFs as catalysts. Therefore, in this study, we used a simple solvothermal method as a catalyst to synthesize a high specific surface area magnetic composite Fe3O4@MOF-74, which was used to catalyze the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) and amino black 10B in wastewater. We activated Na2S2O8 to generate radicals for oxidizing and degrading BPA and amino black 10B. Experimental results showed that at 35 °C, with Fe3O4@MOF-74 (Fe3O4: MOF-74=1:1) concentration of 0.2 g/L and Na2S2O8 concentration of 2 g/L, the catalytic effect is efficient and economical. Meanwhile, removal rates of BPA and amino black 10B exceeded 95.58 % over a broad pH range (pH 3-9). Furthermore, even after multiple cycles of use, Fe3O4@MOF-74 maintained catalytic degradation rates of BPA and amino black 10B above 93.24 % and 95.01 %, respectively. Additionally, in water samples, removal rates of BPA and amino black 10B exceeded 91.55 %. This study provides a new and efficient catalyst material for wastewater treatment, which is expected to play an important role in environmental remediation.
Balanced Adsorption and Oxidation in a Porous P, N-doped Carbon Prepared by Melt-Salt-mediated Strategy for Enhanced Fenton-Like Reaction

Abstract:The activation of persulfate oxidation processes using carbon-based catalysts is attractive for eliminating persistent aromatic organic pollutants in wastewater treatment. Herein, N and P co-doped carbonaceous (NPC) catalysts with an ultrahigh surface area were synthesized using a melt-salt-mediated strategy, employing Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 as a self-sacrificing template. The NPC(1:1) carbon, prepared under optimized conditions, exhibited the highest surface area of 2001.5 m2/g, characterized by the highest number of defects and a high dispersion of N (1.89 %) and P (0.30 %) atoms on the carbon. This carbon catalyst exhibited a high capacity for adsorption and potential for activating persulfates in the removal of p-Nitrophenol (p-NP). Experimental data indicate a balance between adsorption and oxidation in the NPC(1:1)/PDS/p-NP system, with the highest catalytic removal rate achieved through moderate pre-adsorption of p-NP. Evidence from quenching, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and amperometric i-t experiments suggests that the NPC(1:1)/PDS system primarily degrades p-NP through an electron transfer pathway. Defects in carbon and graphitic N were identified as catalytic sites. These defects resulted in an electron-deficient state, which leads to the activation of PDS and graphitic N was more reactive than both pyridinic and pyrrolic N in the adsorption of PDS molecules. Additionally, P-containing groups such as C-P-O, C-O-P, and C3-P were pinpointed as active sites on the carbons through DFT calculations. The intermediates during p-NP degradation were identified, and possible degradation pathways were proposed. A toxicity analysis indicated a significant reduction in overall toxicity following the oxidation treatment. This study provides innovative insights into the balance between adsorption and catalytic activity in porous carbon-activated persulfate oxidation reactions, thereby aiding in the development of enhanced oxidation catalysts for environmental remediation.
Integrating built-in fine alloying FeNi 3 in carbon nanofiber reinforcing intermetallic synergy for PMS activation to degrade Bisphenol A

Abstract:Heterogeneous peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for the mineralization of pollutants has attracted growing attention, while alloying bimetal catalysts afford big promises in synergetic catalysis. Here, by an alteration of electrospun precursor, one-dimensional carbon nanofiber (CNF) integrated with Prussian blue analogs (PBA)-derived alloyed fine plasmonic FeNi 3 hybrid catalyst (FeNi 3 @CNF) was constructed by electrospinning technique with subsequent confinement calcination. The amount of PBA in fiber precursor and thermal treatment temperature were alternatively adjusted to control the distribution and concentration of alloyed FeNi 3 in carbon nanofiber. This unique structure combines the advantages of abundant internal porosity of N-doping carbon fiber and uniforms active FeNi 3 alloys with highly-exposed reactive sites, facilitating the electron transport and proximity of reactant molecules in catalytic oxidation. The synergistic and interfacial effect of optimal FeNi 3 @CNF endowed the ultra-fast degradation activity against bisphenol A (BPA) through rapid persulphate activation to generate four reactive active species. Specifically, 20 mg L −1 of BPA was completely degraded within 4 min with a reaction rate constant of 2.736 min −1 . Impressively, by innovating the utilization of the Prussian blue precursor in electrospinning, the optimal FeNi 3 @CNF shows 18.5, 101.3, and 248.5 times activity enhancement in BPA degradation compared to that of , , and Fe&, revealing the appreciable synergy of bimetallic alloys in PMS activation. In addition, the improved catalytic performance of FeNi 3 @CNF under light irradiation was also simulated, confirming that the enhanced photothermal conversion ability of plasmonic alloys and carbon fiber advance the degradation of BPA.

Confining FeNi nanoparticles in biomass-derived carbon for effectively photo-Fenton catalytic reaction for polluted water treatment

Abstract:Photo-Fenton catalytic degradation organic contaminant is considered as a promising approach to water purification and environmental remediation. The novel class of photo-Fenton heterogeneous composite with large specific surface area, abundant active sites, uniform and stable metal ions, and fast Fe2+/Fe3+ conversion rate is considered as potential catalysts. Herein, a highly efficient and sustainable photo-Fenton heterogeneous composite (FeNi@corncob-activated carbon (CCAC)) was prepared by confining FeNi nanoparticles in CCAC through a simple solvothermal and activated-carbonization method. The porous structure and a high specific surface area of CCAC would effectively disperse FeNi nanoparticles, causing a significantly enhanced photo-Fenton catalytic performance. The RhB degradation rate of FeNi@CCAC was 2.3 times higher than that of FeNi. After five cycles, RhB degradation rate of FeNi@CCAC was barely decreased, confirming that FeNi@CCAC had high cyclability and reproducibility. Moreover, the reaction mechanism was analyzed in-depth via photoelectrochemical and electron spin resonance characterization. The outstanding results can be attributed to the contribution of the active species ‧OH, ‧O2–, and h+ in photo-Fenton degradation of RhB. Notably, FeNi@CCAC also has excellent photo-Fenton catalytic performance in sewage. High-efficiency degradation of organic pollutants with Fe, N co-doped biochar catalysts via persulfate activation

Abstract:In this study, the Fe, N co-doped biochar (Fe-N-BC) was prepared by pyrolyzing wheat straw, urea and iron salts and used to activate persulfate (peroxydisulfate, PS) for organic contaminant degradation. Iron oxide doping not only introduced magnetism into the biochar for easy separation, but also influenced its catalytic ability for PS activation. In the Fe-N-BC/PS system, almost all acid orange (AO7) was removed within 90 min with an apparent rate constant (kobs) of 0.114 min-1, which was almost 37 times larger than that of pure N-BC (0.003 min-1). Factors influencing the removal of AO7 were investigated, including PS concentration, catalyst dosage, and initial pH. The Fe-N-BC/PS system had high removal efficiencies for various organic contaminants and showed high resistance to inorganic anions in aquatic environments. The radical quenching studies, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements, and electrochemical analyses verified that the mechanism of AO7 degradation in the Fe-N-BC/PS system included both radical and non-radical pathways involving the generation of OH, SO4-, O2-, 1O2, and electron transfer. Additionally, persistent free radicals (PFRs) on the catalysts also related to their catalytic efficiencies. These results demonstrated that the Fe-N-BC/PS system had the potential for wastewater treatment applications.
Synergistically enhancing Fenton-like degradation of organics by in situ transformation from Fe3O4 microspheres to mesoporous Fe, N-dual doped carbon

Abstract:Nanocarbon materials are emerging as alternative activators of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for organics decomposition. However, the relatively low activity and complex syntheses hindered their practical application and innovation with respect to rational design of carbocatalysts is highly desired. Herein, an in situ replication and transformation strategy was employed to facilely convert porous Fe3O4 microspheres into novel Fe/N codoped large-pore mesoporous carbon spheres (M‑Fe/NC) as Fenton-like catalysts for PMS activation. Benefiting from the abundance of active sites induced by dual heteroatom doping, the enhanced active site exposure due to the unique mesoporous structure, and the high stability of carbon component, the derived M‑Fe/NC was superior to the pristine Fe3O4 for PMS activation to degrade various organics and was efficient over a wide pH range (2-9). Compared with the proposed mechanisms of previous reports, both radical (surface-bound SO4- and OH) and nonradical (1O2 and direct oxidation) pathways are involved in the M‑Fe/NC/PMS system. Furthermore, experimental observations in combination with DFT calculations reveal that graphitic N and FeN4 sites serve as dual reaction centers in the catalysis. This research opened an avenue for development of novel multi-doped carbocatalysts used to activate PMS for sustainable remediation.

Abstract:The development of novel carbon-based catalysts for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) has attracted extensive attention in the Advance oxidation process (AOPs) for the removal of organic pollutants in water. In this study, using different amino acids as raws to prepare two kinds of N-doping catalysts with different morphology and structure: , , and possess the 1D structure of bamboo-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) while form the 3D structure of Fe/Fe3O4 embedded in N-doped graphite-like carbon nanosheets with the entangled CNTs. The /PMS exhibited the highest degradation efficiency of BPA compared with other catalysts because the 3D structure shows a bigger pore volume with a high specific surface area than the 1D structure, which facilitated the transfer of substances and the exposure of more active sites. Meanwhile, with strong magnetic properties was easily recovered from the reaction solution. By quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance trapping and electrochemical characterization, the mechanisms of the system for BPA degradation were primarily a non-radical process of electron transfer and 1O2. This study will elicit critical insights into the structure design of high-performance carbon-based catalysts for PMS activation in environment applications.

Abstract:Selective removal of target organic pollutants in complex water quality of municipal sewage is extremely important for the deep treatment of water quality. Here, energetic MOF and Fe-MOF are doped in electrostatic spinning process to adjust the structure and composition of the catalysts, active oxygen species (ROSs), realizing the selective removal of organic pollutants. Non-azo and azo pollutants are selected as target pollutants. Catalysts PCFe-8 with Fe nanoclusters, EPCFe-8 with Fe-Nx, and EPC-8 without Fe doping are used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degrading pollutants. The results show that the PCFe-8/PMS system can produce the most SO4− and exhibit superior removal of azo pollutants, whereas the degradation behavior of non-azo pollutants is more inclined to occur in the EPCFe-8/PMS system and the EPC-8/PMS system. This work provides a reference for elucidating the relationship between catalyst structure and components, types of ROSs, and selective degradation of pollutants.
