Abstract:The instantaneous profile method (IPM) is commonly used for measuring unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. In this method, the profiles of water content and pore-water pressure are obtained by fitting discrete raw data measured along water flow direction in a soil sample. In the literature, various measurement spacings and time intervals, interpolation methods for fitting water content data and difference methods for calculating hydraulic gradient have been used. However, the assessment on these discrepancies is still in the lack. In this study, the influence of the above-mentioned factors on the accuracy of calculated hydraulic conductivity was investigated. Instead of carrying out experiments, a capillary-rise test on a silt column was simulated numerically to produce raw data of water content and pore-water pressure. Subsequently various data interpretation methods were adopted to calculate hydraulic conductivity according to the procedures of IPM. The results were then compared with the input hydraulic conductivity function used for numerical simulation. The comparison shows that the cubic hermite spline function is a better interpolation method for fitting water content data than the polyline function and that the central difference method is superior to backward and forward difference methods for calculating hydraulic gradient. It was found that measurement spacings and time intervals should be short reasonblely for accurate results. © 2012 IEEE.
