Abstract:The distribution of slip during an earthquake and how it propagates among faults in the subduction system play a major role in seismic and tsunami hazards, yet they are poorly understood because offshore observations are often lacking. Here we derive the slip distribution and rupture evolution during the 2016 Mw 7.9 Kaikōura (New Zealand) earthquake that reconcile the surface rupture, space geodetic measurements, seismological and tsunami waveform records. We use twelve fault segments, with eleven in the crust and one on the megathrust interface, to model the geodetic data and match the major features of the complex surface ruptures. Our modeling result indicates that a large portion of the moment is distributed on the subduction interface, making a significant contribution to the far field surface deformation and teleseismic body waves. The inclusion of local strong motion and teleseismic waveform data in the joint inversion reveals a unilateral rupture towards northeast with a relatively low averaged rupture speed of ∼1.5 km/s. The first 30 s of the rupture took place on the crustal faults with oblique slip motion and jumped between fault segments that have large differences in strike and dip. The peak moment release occurred at ∼65 s, corresponding to simultaneous rupture of both plate interface and the overlying splay faults with rake angle changes progressively from thrust to strike-slip. The slip on the Papatea fault produced more than 2 m of offshore uplift, making a major contribution to the tsunami at the Kaikōura station, while the northeastern end of the rupture can explain the main features at the Wellington station. Our inversions and simulations illuminate complex up-dip rupture behavior that should be taken into consideration in both seismic and tsunami hazard assessment. The extreme complex rupture behavior also brings new challenges to the earthquake dynamic simulations and understanding the physics of earthquakes.

Abstract:This article briefly reviews the causes and impacts of the massive eastern Japan earthquake and tsunami of 11 March 2011, and comments on the response measures taken by Japan to cope with this devastating disaster. Mass losses occurred mostly because the intensity of the quake and the induced tsunami exceeded local coping capacity. Particularly, the nuclear power plant crisis triggered by the tsunami significantly increased the short- and long-term impacts of the disaster. While the coping capacity Japanese society built after the 1995 Hanshin-Awaji great earthquake tremendously mitigated the damages, there is room for improvement despite Japan’s great efforts in this disaster. Investigating the tsunami preparedness of the coastal nuclear power plants is an issue of paramount importance. In response to future large-scale disasters, there is an urgent need for a highly collaborative framework based on which all available resources could be mobilized; a mutual assistance and rescue system against catastrophes among regions and countries on the basis of international humanitarian aid; and further in-depth research on the multi-hazard and disaster-chain phenomenon in large-scale disasters and corresponding governance approaches.

Abstract:Inland crustal earthquakes usually occur in the brittle upper crust (0–20 km depths), but the 6 September 2018 Eastern Iburi earthquake (M 6.7) took place in southern Hokkaido with a focal depth of ~37 km, causing 41 fatalities and serious damage to the local infrastructure. The reason why this event was so deep and its causal mechanism are still unclear. In this work we study the three-dimensional P and S wave seismic attenuation (1/Q) structure in the source zone of the 2018 Iburi earthquake. Our results show that this event occurred at the boundary between the Sorachi-Yezo belt (low Q) and the dipping Northeastern (NE) Japan arc (high Q) that is descending beneath the Kuril arc. The collision between the NE Japan and Kuril arcs as well as fluids from dehydration of the subducting Pacific plate caused this big event and its unusual focal depth. Similar attenuation structures are revealed in source zones of the 1970 Hidaka earthquake (M 6.7) and the 1982 Urakawa-oki earthquake (M 7.1), suggesting that they were caused by similar processes. We think that large earthquakes will take place again on the active thrust faults in southern Hokkaido in the coming decades. Hence, we should pay much attention to the seismic risk and prepare for reduction of earthquake hazards there.

Abstract:Historical documents indicate that the AD 1611 Keicho earthquake tsunami struck the Pacific coast of Tohoku, northern Japan. Meanwhile, geological records suggest that a large earthquake occurred along the Kuril Trench in the same century. Although historians and geologists have investigated the events intensively, understanding of those events remains insufficient because of limited evidence. As described herein, we suggest future research directions for the huge seventeenth-century tsunamis based on a comprehensive review of earlier works and simulation of the directivity of tsunamis. Our results suggest the possibility that one extremely large or two or three closely spaced large earthquakes and tsunamis occurred in a short time interval along the Kuril and Japan trenches. If this is the case, we must devote attention to the risk of a future occurrence of a Kuril Trench event because the situation after the AD 2011 Tohoku-oki tsunami might be similar to the seventeenth-century events. The key research directions to clarify the seventeenth-century events are a careful review of historical documents during several decades after the AD 1611 earthquake and accurate constraint of the event age of tsunami deposits.

Abstract:The January 1, 2024 Noto Peninsula M w 7.5 tsunamigenic earthquake, with at least 241 deaths, was the most destructive event in Japan following the March 2011 M w 9.0 catastrophic event. We conducted field surveys in the affected area 24 days after the event to document tsunami heights, runups, coseismic coastal uplift and damage to coastal structures. Here, we present the results of the surveys and analyze tsunami height distribution and associated damage. In our survey of 29 locations, tsunami runups and heights varied in the ranges of 4.4–6.2 m, and 1.0–4.4 m, respectively. Notably, Joetsu, the farthest location from the epicenter in our field survey, recorded the highest runup of 6.2 m, which is attributed to the directivity effect of tsunami waves. The maximum surveyed runup of 6.2 m closely aligns with the reported maximum fault slip of 4–6 m for this earthquake, confirming a long-established rule of thumb. Coastal crustal uplifts of up to 1.6 m have rendered many ports unsuitable for use. We identified three failure mechanisms affecting coastal structures: overturning caused by tsunami backwash, damage resulting from tsunami inundation currents and wave pressure, and impacts from floating objects and debris.

Abstract:The aftershock sequence of the devastating Japan earthquake of March 2011 is analyzed for the presence of periodicities at the Earth tide periods. We use spectral analysis as well as a time-domain method KORRECT developed earlier to detect presence of diurnal and semi-diurnal periodicities in the sequence of aftershocks (M \geq 4). This suggests that large aftershocks in the fault zone of the Japan 2011 earthquake were strongly influenced by Earth tides.

Abstract:On January 1st, 2024, a major earthquake near the Noto Peninsula, Japan, triggered tsunami waves that impacted coastal communities in the region. This study reports findings from two field surveys conducted four days and two months after the event to understand the tsunami's mechanisms and effects, respectively. The proximity of the epicenter to land and the complex topography of the Noto Peninsula caused spatial variability in the observed damage. The observed tsunami inundation and run-up heights along the peninsula ranged from 1.02 to 4.10 m, with the maximum of 6.64 m measured at Naoetsu, located approximately 100 km away from the peninsula. However, areas experiencing earthquake-induced land uplift of up to 4 m observed no coastal inundation. Coastal protection structures were crucial in mitigating damage; areas behind breakwaters suffered minimal impact, while unprotected locations and weak points in hydraulic structures allowed increased damage. The relatively infrequent occurrence of large tsunamis on the Japan Sea side, compared to the Pacific side, may have led to lower preparedness levels. However, despite the limited time for evacuation of less than 10 min, one community experienced no casualties, highlighting the effectiveness of prompt evacuation and increased social awareness following the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake Tsunami.

Abstract:To clarify the generating mechanism of the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake (Mw 9.0) and the induced tsunami, we determined high-resolution tomographic images of the Northeast Japan forearc. Significant lateral variations of seismic velocity are visible in the megathrust zone, and most large interplate thrust earthquakes are found to occur in high-velocity (high-V) areas. These high-V zones may represent high-strength asperities at the plate interface where the subducting Pacific plate and the overriding Okhotsk plate are coupled strongly. A shallow high-V zone with large coseismic slip near the Japan Trench may account for the mainshock asperity of the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake. Because it is an isolated asperity surrounded by low-velocity patches, most stress on it was released in a short time and the plate interface became decoupled after the Mw 9.0 earthquake. Thus the overriding Okhotsk plate there was shot out toward the Japan Trench and caused the huge tsunami. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Earthquake swarms are most commonly composed of small‐magnitude earthquakes. However, a recent study by Yoshida, Uchida, et al. (2023, https://doi.org/10.1029/2023GL106023) analyzed a swarm beneath the Noto Peninsula in Japan that, after more than two years of moderate‐magnitude seismicity, triggered the moment magnitude (Mw) 6.2 Suzu mainshock in May 2023. Based on high‐precision earthquake locations and a slip inversion of the mainshock, these authors found that the Mw 6.2 Suzu earthquake occurred on the updip extension of a fault that was active during the swarm, likely driven by increased fluid pressure. After publication of that paper, a much larger and more destructive Mw 7.5 event occurred nearby on 1 January 2024. These events underscore the potential for swarms to be precursors to large, damaging earthquakes. Forecasting the eventual evolution of swarms is currently very challenging but could be aided in the future by new observations and models.

Abstract:The 1923 Great Kanto earthquake occurred on September 1, in Japan, and caused severe damage mainly in the Kanto region. Tsunamis were observed over wide regions from the east coast of the Izu Peninsula to the west coast of the Boso Peninsula, and particularly, the damage in Atami was devastating. Many earthquake fault models including those of Kanamori (1971) and Ando (1971) were proposed based on the records of land deformation. However, such fault models cannot sufficiently explain the tsunami elevation and its initial sea-level motion on the coasts. Hence, the detailed mechanisms remain elusive. This study examines the possibility that a leading mechanism of the tsunami in the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake was a large-scale submarine landslide that occurred at Sagami Bay and at the mouth of Tokyo Bay based on the records of depth data measured by the Imperial Japanese Navy (1924) before and after the earthquake. We first show that the tsunami calculated by each fault model was inconsistent with the waveform at Yokosuka, the coastal tsunami elevations, and initial sea-level motion. Then, based on statistical analysis of the depth changes at the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake, we found that the seafloor bathymetric changes represented large-scale submarine landslides that may correspond to long-runout submarine liquefied sediment flows. The seafloor gradient over a 40 km flow-out distance was equal to or less than 0.4 . Through the identification of the submarine landslide source by tsunami backpropagation analysis and utilizing an analytical solution of a high-density gravity flow and a sensitivity analysis, we conducted a range of numerical simulations of the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake tsunamis using a fault model and a submarine landslide tsunami source model due to a high-density liquefied gravity flow. The results quantitatively accounted for the discrepancy between the observed tsunami records with maximum tsunami elevations over 12 m and the fault-model–based simulations with maximum tsunami elevations of 2 to 5 m and explained consistently the maximum tsunami elevation distributions as well as the time-series tsunami waveforms. These results may thus facilitate and deepen our understanding of the earthquake-induced submarine landslide tsunami risk as cascading multi-geohazards.

Abstract:On March 11th, 2011, the Pacific coast of Japan was hit by a tsunami generated by the largest earthquake (M9.0) in the history of the country and causing a wide range of devastating damage. Using preliminary reported data from many sources, some topics such as tsunami fatality ratio and tsunami fragility curves for structural damage are discussed and compared with other countries. This paper aims to discuss the damage characteristics of this tsunami as well as its mechanism, as observed through field surveys conducted over the 4 months following the tsunami. The field survey covers 13 areas in the Miyagi prefecture from Kesennuma city in the northernmost region to Yamamoto town in the southernmost region. The arrival time of the first tsunami along the coastal areas in the Miyagi prefecture was confirmed by stopped clocks found during the survey. The damage mechanism of coastal structures such as breakwaters, seawalls, tsunami gates, and evacuation buildings was investigated and discussed. Damage characteristics for each area, i.e., urban areas, port, coastal structures, fisheries, and agricultural areas, were also summarized. The conclusions drawn from the data analysis suggest that experience and education (soft countermeasures) are important to reduce the loss of life, as shown for example in the Sanriku area. The field surveys indicate that wood and reinforced-concrete (RC) structures should be balanced to survive both earthquake and tsunami forces, and the structural design for buildings should be reconsidered after the example in Onagawa town. In addition, coastal structures for tsunami countermeasures (hard countermeasures) should be more properly designed for survival instead of becoming floating debris upon being overturned by a tsunami. The combination of both hard and soft measures is especially necessary for optimizing the outcomes following a great disaster. These recommendations should be taken into consideration in the reconstruction efforts for better tsunami countermeasures in the future.

Abstract:In recent years, there have been worldwide reports of massive tsunamis, drawing attention to how tsunamis are intensified by submarine landslides triggered by earthquakes. However, precise data on tsunamis caused by submarine landslides are scarce, leading to insufficient information for a thorough discussion of the characteristics of such tsunamis. On the other hand, during the Noto Peninsula earthquake (Mw7.5) that occurred in Japan on January 1, 2024, a nonseismic tsunami distinct from those originating from fault ruptures were observed. To investigate its characteristics, we analyzed tide/wave gauge records, video footage, and tsunami trace heights along the coast of Toyama Bay. Furthermore, we validated scenarios capable of reproducing the observed records using an integrated landslide-tsunami model. It was found that assuming the existence of 5 submarine landslides along the underwater canyons of Toyama Bay enabled the precise explanation of multiple types of data. Additionally, our study revealed that submarine landslides occurred approximately 50 s after the earthquake, coinciding with the peak ground shaking in Toyama Bay. Compared to the seismic tsunami originating solely from the Noto Peninsula offshore fault rupture, the subsequent tsunami triggered by submarine landslides amplified the tsunami height by approximately 30% along Toyama Bay.

Abstract:On January 1, 2024, a devastating M 7.6 earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, resulting in significant casualties and property damage. Utilizing information from the first six days after the earthquake, this article analyzes the seismic source characteristics, disaster situation, and emergency response of this earthquake. The results show: 1) The earthquake rupture was of the thrust type, with aftershock distribution showing a north-east-oriented belt-like feature of 150 km. 2) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR), observations detected significant westward to north-westward co-seismic displacement near the epicenter, with the maximum horizontal displacement reaching 1.2 m and the vertical uplift displacement reaching 4 m. A two-segment fault inversion model fits the observational data well. 3) Near the epicenter, large Peak Ground Velocity (PGV) and Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) were observed, with the maxima reaching 145 cm/s and 2681 gal, respectively, and the intensity reached the highest level 7 on the Japanese (Japan Meteorological Agency, JMA) intensity standard, which is higher than level 10 of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) standard. 4) The observation of the very rare multiple strong pulse-like ground motion (PLGM) waveform poses a topic worthy of research in the field of earthquake engineering. 5) As of January 7, the earthquake had left 128 deaths and 560 injuries in Ishikawa Prefecture, with 1305 buildings completely or partially destroyed, and had triggered a chain of disasters including tsunamis, fires, slope failures, and road damage. Finally, this paper summarizes the emergency rescue, information dissemination, and other disaster response and management measures taken in response to this earthquake. This work provides a reference case for carrying out effective responses, and offers lessons for handling similar events in the future.

Abstract:Yakushima is a small, mountainous island off southern Kyushu, Japan. Its proximity to active volcanos and subduction zones leaves Yakushima vulnerable to large megathrust earthquakes and tsunamis, in addition to powerful typhoons and storm surges. These hazardous events deposit beach boulders: large rocks moved above sea-level by powerful waves. By radiocarbon dating the fossilized coral within these boulders, one can derive age estimates of the hazard events. Reliably estimating the magnitude and timing of geological events in the historical record is vital for future hazard prediction and mitigation. In this study, we estimated the deposition age of ten boulders on the north coast of Yakushima to infer potential paleo tsunamis and storm surges. We found that large wave events have occurred frequently throughout the Holocene. Based on the boulders' ages, we identified four potential deposition events at 1986–2692 cal yr BP, 3522–4075 cal yr BP, 4773–5232 cal yr BP, and 6187–6638 cal yr BP. These deposits are likely a result of storm surges, or tsunamis from nearby volcanic activity or subduction earthquakes. Another set of boulders dated to 5125–5738 cal yr BP were likely exposed due to a decline in sea-level following the Holocene high sea-level stand. Further modelling could determine the wave height necessary to move the boulders and distinguish between storm and tsunami deposits. This is especially pertinent given the high frequency of coastal geohazards, and the likelihood of similar hazards impacting southeast Japan in the future.

Abstract:The tsunami caused by the Tonga submarine volcanic eruption that occurred at 13:15 Japan Time (JST) on January 15, 2022, exposed a blind spot in Japan's tsunami monitoring and warning system, which was established in 1952 for local tsunamis and expanded to distant tsunamis after the 1960 Chile tsunami. This paper summarizes how the warning system responded to the unprecedented tsunami, the actual evacuation process, and the damage it caused in Japan. Initially, the tsunami from the volcanic eruption was expected to arrive at approximately midnight with amplitudes of less than 20 cm. However, a series of short waves arrived at approximately 21:00, a few hours earlier than expected. The early arrival of these sea waves coincided with a rapid increase in atmospheric pressure; then, the short-period component was predominant, and the wave height was amplified while forming wave groups. After a 1.2 m tsunami was observed in Amami City in southern Japan at 23:55 JST, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning/advisory. The tsunami continued, and all advisories were cleared at 14:00 JST on January 16. Information about this tsunami and the response to it are summarized here, including the characteristics and issues of the actual tsunami evacuation situation in each region. There were no casualties, but the issues that emerged included difficulty evacuating on a winter night and traffic congestion due to evacuation by car and under the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the coastal area, damage to fishing boats and aquaculture facilities was reported due to the flow of the tsunami. In addition, damage to aquaculture facilities, including those producing oysters, scallops, seaweed and other marine products, decreased the supply of marine products, and the economic impact is likely to increase in the future.

Abstract:Analysis of the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake on 26.12.2004 (M = 9) has allowed us to identify two non- trivial properties of the dynamics of aftershocks. First, the strongest aftershock (M = 7.2) was likely triggered by the round-the-world seismic echo of the main shock. The idea is that the surface waves propagating outwards from the main shock return back to the vicinity of the epicenter after having made a complete revolution around the Earth and induce there the aftershock. The second property is the modulation of the aftershock sequence by the fundamental oscillation of the Earth 0S2 excited by the main shock. Both results are supported by analysis of the Tohoku earthquake (11.03.2011, M = 9), as well as by the statistical analysis of the USGS earthquake catalog.
Segmented Trapdoor Fault in Kita‐Ioto Caldera, Japan: Insights From Millimeter Tsunami Waves Captured by an Array Network of Ocean Bottom Pressure Gauges

Abstract:Abstract Submarine calderas with active magma supply have recently been identified as potential sources of volcanic tsunamis due to sudden meter‐scale uplift by trapdoor faulting, occurring every few years to a decade. These trapdoor uplifts are seismically recorded as non‐double‐couple earthquakes with magnitudes M > 5. Kita‐Ioto Caldera, a submarine caldera in the Izu‐Bonin arc, caused such earthquakes every 2–5 years. Our previous study (Sandanbata & Saito, 2024, https://doi.org/10.1029/2023jb027917 ) analyzed data from a single ocean bottom pressure (OBP) gauge in the Philippine Sea, confirming trapdoor uplifts during the earthquakes in 2008 and 2015. However, high temporal‐resolution data for the earthquakes in 2017 and 2019 were lost, preventing source mechanism investigation. To address this, we examine OBP data of the two recent earthquakes from the array network of Dense Oceanfloor Network system for Earthquakes and Tsunamis, deployed off the southwestern coast of Japan. Despite the poor signal‐to‐noise ratio in each record, we successfully detect clear tsunami signals associated with the earthquakes using a waveform stacking method, with sea‐surface wave amplitudes of only 1–2 mm. By analyzing the data, we propose source models that represent trapdoor uplifts in the submarine caldera and accurately reproduce the detected tsunami waveforms, confirming the recurrence of trapdoor uplifts. Notably, differences in the tsunami waveforms between the 2017 and 2019 earthquakes suggest that different segments of the intra‐caldera fault system were activated. This segmentation likely influences the recurrence characteristics of the inflation cycle in calderas, which would be a key to understanding the magma accumulation process and assessing the sizes and timings of future trapdoor uplifts.
