Abstract:Dynamic shearing banding and fracturing in unsaturated porous media are significant problems in engineering and science. This article proposes a multiphase micro‐periporomechanics (μ PPM) paradigm for modeling dynamic shear banding and fracturing in unsaturated porous media. Periporomechanics (PPM) is a nonlocal reformulation of classical poromechanics to model continuous and discontinuous deformation/fracture and fluid flow in porous media through a single framework. In PPM, a multiphase porous material is postulated as a collection of a finite number of mixed material points. The length scale in PPM that dictates the nonlocal interaction between material points is a mathematical object that lacks a direct physical meaning. As a novelty, in the coupled μ PPM, a microstructure‐based material length scale is incorporated by considering micro‐rotations of the solid skeleton following the Cosserat continuum theory for solids. As a new contribution, we reformulate the second‐order work for detecting material instability and the energy‐based crack criterion and J‐integral for modeling fracturing in the μ PPM paradigm. The stabilized Cosserat PPM correspondence principle that mitigates the multiphase zero‐energy mode instability is augmented to include unsaturated fluid flow. We have numerically implemented the novel μ PPM paradigm through a dual‐way fractional‐step algorithm in time and a hybrid Lagrangian–Eulerian meshfree method in space. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the robustness and efficacy of the proposed μ PPM paradigm for modeling shear banding and fracturing in unsaturated porous media.

Abstract:Dynamic crack branching in unsaturated porous media holds significant relevance in various fields, including geotechnical engineering, geosciences, and petroleum engineering. This article presents a numerical investigation into dynamic crack branching in unsaturated porous media using a recently developed coupled micro-periporomechanics paradigm. This paradigm extends the periporomechanics model by incorporating the micro-rotation of the solid skeleton. Within this framework, each material point is equipped with three degrees of freedom: displacement, micro-rotation, and fluid pressure. Consistent with the Cosserat continuum theory, a length scale associated with the micro-rotation of material points is inherently integrated into the model. This study encompasses several key aspects: (1) Validation of the coupled micro-periporomechanics paradigm for effectively modeling crack branching in deformable porous media, (2) Examination of the transition from a single branch to multiple branches in porous media under drained conditions, (3) Simulation of single crack branching in unsaturated porous media under dynamic loading conditions, and (4) Investigation of multiple crack branching in unsaturated porous media under dynamic loading conditions. The numerical results obtained in this study are systematically analyzed to elucidate the factors that influence dynamic crack branching in porous media subjected to dynamic loading. Furthermore, the comprehensive numerical findings underscore the efficacy and robustness of the coupled micro-periporomechanics paradigm in accurately modeling dynamic crack branching in variably saturated porous media.

Abstract:The thermo-hydro-mechanical of unsaturated soils plays a significant role in dynamic shear banding and fracturing. In this article, we propose a thermo-hydro-mechanical material model in the periporomechanics paradigm to model shear banding and crack triggered by temperature. Periporomechanics is a nonlocal framework for the mechanics of unsaturated soil where a length scale dictates the nonlocal interaction between material points. Periporomechanics unites continuous and discontinuous deformation and fluid flow in porous media. As a new contribution, we incorporate the thermo-hydro-mechanical material model in the periporomechanics through the correspondence principle for modeling shear banding and cracking in unsaturated porous media. The stabilized PPM correspondence principle that mitigates the multiphase zero-energy mode instability is augmented. At the global level, we have numerically implemented the periporomechanics paradigm through an explicit Lagrangian meshfree algorithm in the global level. At the local level, we impose the return mapping algorithm to implement the thermo-hydro-mechanical constitutive model. We present numerical examples to demonstrate the efficacy and robustness of proposed periporomechanics for modeling the shear banding bifurcation and crack in unsaturated porous media triggered by temperature.

Phase-field modeling of fluid-driven dynamic cracking in porous media

Abstract:A phase field model for fluid-driven dynamic crack propagation in poroelastic media is proposed. Therefore, classical Biot poroelasticity theory is applied in the porous medium while arbitrary crack growth is naturally captured by the phase field model. We also account for the transition of the fluid property from the intact medium to the fully broken one by employing indicator functions. We employ a staggered scheme and implement our approach into the software package COMSOL Multiphysics. Our approach is first verified through three classical benchmark problems which are compared to analytical solutions for dynamic consolidation and pressure distribution in a single crack and in a specimen with two sets of joints. Subsequently, we present several 2D and 3D examples of dynamic crack branching and their interaction with pre-existing natural fractures. All presented examples demonstrate the capability of the proposed approach of handling dynamic crack propagation, branching and coalescence of fluid-driven fracture.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a hybrid dual-variable-horizon peridynamics/continuum mechanics modeling approach and a strength-induced adaptive coupling algorithm to simulate brittle fractures in porous materials. Peridynamics theory is promising for fracture simulation since it allows discontinuities in the displacement field. However, they remain computationally expensive. Besides, there exists the surface effect in peridynamics due to the incomplete neighborhoods near the boundaries, including the outer boundaries and the boundaries of inner pores in porous materials. The proposed approach couples continuum mechanics and peridynamics into a closed equation system and an adaptive algorithm is developed to activate the peridynamics according to a strength criterion. In addition, the surface effect is corrected by introducing an improved peridynamic model with dual and variable horizons. We conduct the simulations using the relevant discretization scheme in each domain, i.e., the discontinuous Galerkin finite-element in the peridynamic domain and the continuous finite-element in the continuum mechanics domain. Two-dimensional numerical examples illustrate that successful fracture simulations of random porous materials can be achieved by this approach. In addition, the impact of distribution and size of pores on the fractures of porous materials is also investigated.

Abstract:A hydro-mechanical-damage fully coupled numerical method is developed for simulations of complicated quasi-brittle fracking in poroelastic media. A unified fluid continuity equation with crack-width dependent permeability, based on the Biot’s poroelastic theory, is used for simultaneous modeling of fluid flow in both fractures and porous media. The fluid pressure is coupled into the governing equations of the phase-field regularized cohesive zone model, which can automatically predict quasi-brittle multi-crack initiation, nucleation, and propagation without remeshing, crack tracking, or auxiliary fields as needed by other methods. An alternate minimization Newton–Raphson iterative algorithm is implemented within the finite element framework to solve the above three-fields coupled problem with nodal degrees of freedom of displacements, fluid pressures, and damages. The method is first validated by three problems with analytical solutions, a problem with experimental results, and a two-crack merging problem with numerical results in published literature, in terms of time evolutions of injected fluid pressures, crack widths and lengths, and final crack paths. Horizontal wellbore fracking problems with parallel hydraulic cracks and random natural fractures are then simulated, with the effects of spacing, number, and angle of perforations investigated in detail. It is found that the developed method is capable of modeling complex multi-crack fracking in both homogeneous media and heterogeneous media with natural fractures, and is thus promising for fracking design optimization of practical exploitation of shale gas and oil.

Abstract:Periporomechanmics is a strong nonlocal framework for modeling the mechanics and physics of variably saturated porous media with evolving discontinuities. In periporomechanics, the horizon serves as a mathematical nonlocal parameter that lacks a precise physical meaning. In this article, as a new contribution we formulate a Cosserat periporomechanics paradigm for modeling dynamic shear banding and crack branching in dry porous media incorporating a micro-structure based length scale. In this micro-periporomechanics framework, each material point has both translational and rotational degrees of freedom in line with the Cosserat continuum theory. We formulate a stabilized Cosserat constitutive correspondence principle via the energy method through which classical viscous material models for porous media can be used in the proposed Cosserat periporomechanics. We have numerically implemented the micro-periporomechanics model through an explicit Lagrangian meshfree algorithm for dynamic problems. Two benchmark numerical examples are presented to test the computational micro-periporomechanics paradigm in modeling shear bands and mode-I cracks. We then present two numerical examples to show the efficacy of the proposed micro-periporomechanics for modeling the characteristics of shear banding bifurcation and dynamic crack branching in dry porous media.

A phase-field modeling approach of fracture propagation in poroelastic media

Abstract:This paper proposes a phase field model for fracture in poroelastic media. The porous medium is modeled based on the classical Biot poroelasticity theory and the fracture behavior is controlled by the phase field model. Moreover, the fracture propagation is driven by the elastic energy where the phase field is used as an interpolation function to transit fluid property from the intact medium to the fully broken one. We use a segregated (staggered) scheme and implement our approach in Comsol Multiphysics. The proposed model is verified by a single-phase solid subjected to tension and a 2D specimen subjected to an increasing internal pressure. We also compare our results with analytical solutions. Finally, we show 2D and 3D examples of internal fluid injection to illustrate the capability of the proposed approach.

Abstract:In this work, a thermal-mechanical coupling smooth particle hydrodynamics-phase field method (TM-SPH-PFM) model was proposed to study the thermal fracturing problem in rocks. Here, we derived the discrete forms of the mass conservation equation, momentum conservation equation, heat conduction equation, and phase field damage evolution equation using kernel function approximation and particle approximation methods. According to the Benzeggagh-Kenane criterion, new crack driving forces that consider the nonlinear interactions between two fundamental crack patterns are established. The discontinuity at the crack site after rock cracking is determined by the interaction parameters. We proposed a multirate explicit time integration method to address the issue of different time scales between temperature and mechanical fields. The correctness and convergence of the numerical model have been verified through three benchmark examples: the steady-state heat transfer problem, the transient heat transfer problem and two-dimensional double-notched specimen cracking under temperature. Subsequently, the effect of the coefficient of thermal expansion and the degree of inhomogeneity of the rock on the pattern of thermal fracture is modelled, and the heating fracture of Lac du Bonnet granite with a central circular hole is simulated. The current numerical model can serve as an effective tool for simulating rock thermmal-elastic fracture problems.

Abstract:This study develops a hydro-damage-mechanical fully coupled numerical method capable of modelling complex fluid-driven transient dynamic crack propagation in quasi-brittle poroelastic media. In this method, the fluid flow in both fractures and porous media is described by a fluid continuity equation with the modified Darcy-Poiseuille law based on the Biot's poroelastic theory. The fluid pressure and the inertial force of solids are coupled by governing equations of the mesh-insensitive phase-field regularized cohesive zone model that can simulate quasi-brittle multi-crack initiation, propagation, branching and merging without remeshing or crack tracking. The resultant displacement-pressure-damage coupled multiphysics system of equations is solved using an alternative minimization Newton-Raphson iterative algorithm with an implicit Newmark integration scheme within the finite element framework. The new method was first validated by a few 2D problems, including crack branching and deflecting in solids, fracking in a concrete cube, and consolidation and stress wave propagation in poroelastic media, subjected to various impulsive loadings. It was then applied to pressure pulsing fracking of a 40 m granite rock reservoir with extensive parametric studies of fluid viscosity and pulsing injection rate, mode and period. It was found that pulsing injection with higher fluid rates and lower fluid viscosity resulted in more developed crack patterns, and in particular, there existed an optimal pulsing injection period that could promote fracking under relatively low injection pressures. 3D horizontal well problems with multiple non-planar crack propagation and bifurcation were also successfully simulated to demonstrate the capacity and potential of the new method for engineering design and optimization of pressure pulsing fracking.

Updated Lagrangian unsaturated periporomechanics for extreme large deformation in unsaturated porous media

Abstract:Unsaturated periporomechanics is a strong nonlocal poromechanics based on peridynamic state and effective force concept. In the previous periporomechnics the total Lagrangian formulation is adopted for the solid skeleton of porous media. In this article as a new contribution we formulate and implement an updated Lagrangian unsaturated periporomechanics framework for modeling extreme large deformation in unsaturated soils under drained condition, e.g., soil column collapse. In this new framework the so-called bond-associated sub-horizon concept is utilized to enhance the stability and accuracy at extreme large deformation of solid skeleton. The stabilized nonlocal velocity gradient in the deformed configuration is used to update the effective force state from a critical state based visco-plastic model for unsaturated soils. The updated Lagrangian periporomechanics is implemented numerically through an explicit Newmark scheme for high-performance computing. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the updated Lagrangian periporomechanics and its robustness in modeling unsaturated soil column collapse under drained condition.

Abstract:Hydraulic fracturing of saturated brittle rock is a common discontinuous multi-physics phenomenon. The evolution and flow behavior of hydraulic fractures are the key to multi-field coupling in saturated brittle porous media. A fluid-solid-phase multi-field coupling modeling method for hydraulic fracturing is proposed and implemented by staggered algorithm in finite element software. In this method, the evolution of hydraulic fractures is controlled by a unified fracture phase-field method, and the fluid flow in the cracked domain is equivalent to a Darcy-type flow whose flow property is dependent on the crack width. The crack width is derived according to the level-set method, and discretized into an equivalent form to determine the flow property in the cracked domain. The simulation results show that the proposed multi-field coupling modeling method performs well in simulating the hydraulic fracturing of saturated brittle porous media under constant flow and constant injection pressure. A heterogeneous model is established by applying the multi-field coupling modeling method to mesostructured materials, which shows great potential in simulating irregular-shaped natural fractures.

Abstract:<p>In the present manuscript fracture propagation in a saturated porous medium is modeled based on the classical Biot theory, where solid skeleton and fluid flow are represented by separate two layers. The non‐ordinary state‐based peridynamics (NOSBPD) layer is employed to capture deformation including fracturing of the solid skeleton, while the fluid flow is controlled by the finite element method (FEM) layer. The interaction between the layers is realized by considering the effects of pore pressure from the FEM layer on the NOSBPD layer and, vice versa, the effect of the volumetric strain, porosity, and permeability variations from the NOSBPD layer on the FEM layer. The coupling terms retain their parent characteristics, that is, the interaction term in the momentum balance equation is approximated by the local FEM formulation whereas the interaction term in the mass balance equation is approximated by the nonlocal NOSBPD formulation. By doing so, the model retains the flexibility of coupling two independent discretizations. The coupled system is solved by a fully implicit solution scheme. The accuracy of the proposed method has been verified against available closed‐form solutions and published numerical approaches for the pressure‐ and fluid‐driven facture propagation problems.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, a novel coupling explicit phase-field material point method with the convected particle domain interpolation (ePF-CCPDI) is proposed to predict the large deformation elastoplastic failure behavior in two-dimensional fully saturated porous media. This method provides a new thermodynamic derivation for the explicit phase-field modeling of multi-physical fracture problems. To account for the coupling effect of pore fluid flow on fractured porous solids, the pressure energy is included in the coupled system energy balance equation. The constitutive relationship of saturated porous media indicates that the pore pressure has a direct effect on the deformation of the solid skeleton. For achieving the fluid pressure smoothly distributed in damaged porous media under large deformation, exponential indicator functions are constructed to interpolate the fluid properties from the intact medium to the fully broken one. Meanwhile, the crack-opening-dependent permeability is introduced to estimate fluid flow inside the crack. The coupled explicit phase-field plasticity model is adopted to characterize the elastoplastic failure behavior of the solid skeleton. Moreover, a mixed explicit-implicit staggered solution scheme is developed to effectively solve the governing equations of the coupled system. To eliminate the numerical noises while material points cross the cell boundaries in large deformation simulation, the improved convected particle domain interpolation technique (CPDI) is adopted to enhance the computational accuracy. Two solution schemes are also proposed based on the extended material point penalty method to handle the specified pressure boundary condition. Finally, several representative two-dimensional numerical examples are conducted to validate the accuracy and capability of the proposed method.

Abstract:<p>In fractured natural formations, the equations governing fluid flow and geomechanics are strongly coupled. Hydrodynamical properties depend on the mechanical configuration, and they are therefore difficult to accurately resolve using uncoupled methods. In recent years, significant research has focused on discretization strategies for these coupled systems, particularly in the presence of complicated fracture network geometries. In this work, we explore a finite‐volume discretization for the multiphase flow equations coupled with a finite‐element scheme for the mechanical equations. Fractures are treated as lower dimensional surfaces embedded in a background grid. Interactions are captured using the embedded discrete fracture model (EDFM) and the embedded finite element method (EFEM) for the flow and the mechanics, respectively. This nonconforming approach significantly alleviates meshing challenges. EDFM considers fractures as lower dimension finite volumes that exchange fluxes with the rock matrix cells. The EFEM method provides, instead, a local enrichment of the finite‐element space inside each matrix cell cut by a fracture element. Both the use of piecewise constant and piecewise linear enrichments are investigated. They are also compared to an extended finite element approach. One key advantage of EFEM is the element‐based nature of the enrichment, which reduces the geometric complexity of the implementation and leads to linear systems with advantageous properties. Synthetic numerical tests are presented to study the convergence and accuracy of the proposed method. It is also applied to a realistic scenario, involving a heterogeneous reservoir with a complex fracture distribution, to demonstrate its relevance for field applications.</p>

Numerical analysis of a mixed-dimensional poromechanical model with frictionless contact at matrix-fracture interfaces

Abstract:We present a complete numerical analysis for a general discretization of a coupled flow-mechanics model in fractured porous media, considering single-phase flows and including frictionless contact at matrix-fracture interfaces, as well as nonlinear poromechanical coupling. Fractures are described as planar surfaces, yielding the so-called mixed- or hybrid-dimensional models. Small displacements and a linear elastic behavior are considered for the matrix. The model accounts for discontinuous fluid pressures at matrix-fracture interfaces in order to cover a wide range of normal fracture conductivities. The numerical analysis is carried out in the Gradient Discretization framework, encompassing a large family of conforming and nonconforming discretizations. The convergence result also yields, as a by-product, the existence of a weak solution to the continuous model. A numerical experiment in 2D is presented to support the obtained result, employing a Hybrid Finite Volume scheme for the flow and second-order finite elements ($\mathbb P_2$) for the mechanical displacement coupled with face-wise constant ($\mathbb P_0$) Lagrange multipliers on fractures, representing normal stresses, to discretize the contact conditions.

Abstract:Superposition-based concurrent multiscale approaches for poromechanical problems aimed at resolving localized fluid flow and deformation of a solid skeleton including its possible fracture are developed. The main departure of the proposed formulation is that the primary unknowns in the coupling zone, the solid displacement u and pore pressure p, are discretized by possibly different numerical models. Two discretization schemes are studied: (i) superposition of two or more finite element (FE) discretizations of the Biot's u-p model of a porous medium, and (ii) superposition of the peridynamics (PD) discretization of the fractured solid phase on the finite element discretization of the Biot's u-p model of a porous medium. In the latter case, the total stress of the fluid-solid mixture in the coupling domain is derived from the effective stress obtained from the combined PD and FEM solutions while the pore pressure is obtained from the FE solution. The accuracy of the superposition-based concurrent multiscale method is studied on several benchmark problems including the classical Terzaghi's one-dimensional consolidation problem, the two-dimensional strip footing problem, and the pressure- and fluid- driven fracture propagation problem in saturated porous media. The main hydraulic fracture characteristics, including complex crack paths and fluid flow patterns, have been found to be reasonably well reproduced by the proposed method.

Abstract:In the hydraulic fracturing of natural rocks, understanding and predicting crack penetrations into the neighboring layers is crucial and relevant in terms of cost-efficiency in engineering and environmental protection. This study constitutes a phase field framework to examine hydraulic fracture propagation in naturally-layered porous media. Biot's poroelasticity theory is used to couple the displacement and flow field, while a phase field method helps characterize fracture growth behavior. Additional fracture criteria are not required and fracture propagation is governed by the equation of phase field evolution. Thus, penetration criteria are not required when hydraulic fractures reach the material interfaces. The phase field method is implemented within a staggered scheme that sequentially solves the displacement, phase field, and fluid pressure. We consider the soft-to-stiff and the stiff-to-soft configurations, where the layer interface exhibits different inclination angles $\theta$. Penetration, singly-deflected, and doubly-deflected fracture scenarios can be predicted by our simulations. In the soft-to-stiff configuration, $\theta=0^\circ$ exhibits penetration or symmetrical doubly-deflected scenarios, and $\theta=15^\circ$ exhibits singly-deflected or asymmetric doubly-deflected scenarios. Only the singly-deflected scenario is obtained for $\theta=30^\circ$. In the stiff-to-soft configuration, only the penetration scenario is obtained with widening fractures when hydraulic fractures penetrate into the soft layer.
