Abstract:Boesch’s theorem says that “Suppose that a connected graph G has two non-adjacent 2-degree vertices u1 and u2. Then t(G)≤t(G/{u1,u2}), where t(G) is the number of spanning trees of G.” In this paper, we generalize this theorem as follows: “Suppose that G is a connected graph of order at least 3, and that u1 and u2 are two vertices of degree m and n, respectively, in G. Then t(G)≤mn−m02m+n−2m0t(G/{u1,u2}), where m0(≥0) is the number of multiple edges between u1 and u2.”

Abstract:We deal with a variant of the 1–2–3 Conjecture introduced by Gao, Wang, and Wu (Graphs Combin 32:1415–1421, 2016) . This variant asks whether all graphs can have their edges labelled with 1 and 2 so that when computing the sums of labels incident to the vertices, no monochromatic cycle appears. In the aforementioned seminal work, the authors mainly verified their conjecture for a few classes of graphs, namely graphs with maximum average degree at most 3 and series–parallel graphs, and observed that it also holds for simple classes of graphs (cycles, complete graphs, and complete bipartite graphs). In this work, we provide a deeper study of this conjecture, establishing strong connections with other, more or less distant notions of graph theory. While this conjecture connects quite naturally to other notions and problems surrounding the 1–2–3 Conjecture, it can also be expressed so that it relates to notions such as the vertex-arboricity of graphs. Exploiting such connections, we provide easy proofs that the conjecture holds for bipartite graphs and 2-degenerate graphs, thus generalising some of the results of Gao, Wang, and Wu. We also prove that the conjecture holds for graphs with maximum average degree less than , thereby strengthening another of their results. Notably, this also implies the conjecture holds for planar graphs with girth at least 5. All along the way, we also raise observations and results highlighting why the conjecture might be of greater interest.

An Unsure Note on an Un-Schur Problem

Abstract:Graham, Rödl, and Ruciński originally posed the problem of determining the minimum number of monochromatic Schur triples that must appear in any 2-coloring of the first $n$ integers. This question was subsequently resolved independently by Datskovsky, Schoen, and Robertson and Zeilberger. Here we suggest studying a natural anti-Ramsey variant of this question and establish the first non-trivial bounds by proving that the maximum fraction of Schur triples that can be rainbow in a given $3$-coloring of the first $n$ integers is at least $0.4$ and at most $0.66656$. We conjecture the lower bound to be tight. This question is also motivated by a famous analogous problem in graph theory due to Erdős and Sós regarding the maximum number of rainbow triangles in any $3$-coloring of $K_n$, which was settled by Balogh et al.

Abstract:One of the most fundamental results in graph theory is Mantel's theorem which determines the maximum number of edges in a triangle-free graph of order $n$. Recently a colorful variant of this problem has been solved. In such a variant we consider $c$ graphs on a common vertex set, thinking of each graph as edges in a distinct color, and want to determine the smallest number of edges in each color which guarantees existence of a rainbow triangle. Here, we solve the analogous problem for directed graphs without rainbow triangles, either directed or transitive, for any number of colors. The constructions and proofs essentially differ for $c=3$ and $c \geq 4$ and the type of the forbidden triangle. Additionally, we also solve the analogous problem in the setting of oriented graphs.

Wickets in 3-uniform Hypergraphs

Abstract:In these notes, we consider a Turán-type problem in hypergraphs. What is the maximum number of edges if we forbid a subgraph? Let $H_n^{(3)}$ be a 3-uniform linear hypergraph, i.e. any two edges have at most one vertex common. A special hypergraph, called {\em wicket}, is formed by three rows and two columns of a $3 \times 3$ point matrix. We describe two linear hypergraphs -- both containing a wicket -- that if we forbid either of them in $H_n^{(3)}$, then the hypergraph is sparse, and the number of its edges is $o(n^2)$. This proves a conjecture of Gyárfás and Sárközy.

On a List Variant of the Multiplicative 1-2-3 Conjecture

Abstract:The 1-2-3 Conjecture asks whether almost all graphs can be (edge-)labelled with $1,2,3$ so that no two adjacent vertices are incident to the same sum of labels. In the last decades, several aspects of this problem have been studied in literature, including more general versions and slight variations. Notable such variations include the List 1-2-3 Conjecture variant, in which edges must be assigned labels from dedicated lists of three labels, and the Multiplicative 1-2-3 Conjecture variant, in which labels~$1,2,3$ must be assigned to the edges so that adjacent vertices are incident to different products of labels. Several results obtained towards these two variants led to observe some behaviours that are distant from those of the original conjecture. In this work, we consider the list version of the Multiplicative 1-2-3 Conjecture, proposing the first study dedicated to this very problem. In particular, given any graph $G$, we wonder about the minimum~$k$ such that $G$ can be labelled as desired when its edges must be assigned labels from dedicated lists of size~$k$. Exploiting a relationship between our problem and the List 1-2-3 Conjecture, we provide upper bounds on~$k$ when $G$ belongs to particular classes of graphs. We further improve some of these bounds through dedicated arguments.

Sparse graphs with local covering conditions on edges

Abstract:In 1988, Erdős suggested the question of minimizing the number of edges in a connected $n$-vertex graph where every edge is contained in a triangle. Shortly after, Catlin, Grossman, Hobbs, and Lai resolved this in a stronger form. In this paper, we study a natural generalization of the question of Erdős in which we replace `triangle' with `clique of order $k$' for ${k\ge 3}$. We completely resolve this generalized question with the characterization of all extremal graphs. Motivated by applications in data science, we also study another generalization of the question of Erdős where every edge is required to be in at least $\ell$ triangles for $\ell\ge 2$ instead of only one triangle. We completely resolve this problem for $\ell = 2$.

Resolution of the Kohayakawa-Kreuter conjecture

Abstract:A graph $G$ is said to be Ramsey for a tuple of graphs $(H_1,\dots,H_r)$ if every $r$-coloring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H_i$ in color $i$, for some $i$. A fundamental question at the intersection of Ramsey theory and the theory of random graphs is to determine the threshold at which the binomial random graph $G_{n,p}$ becomes a.a.s. Ramsey for a fixed tuple $(H_1,\dots,H_r)$, and a famous conjecture of Kohayakawa and Kreuter predicts this threshold. Earlier work of Mousset-Nenadov-Samotij, Bowtell-Hancock-Hyde, and Kuperwasser-Samotij-Wigderson has reduced this probabilistic problem to a deterministic graph decomposition conjecture. In this paper, we resolve this deterministic problem, thus proving the Kohayakawa-Kreuter conjecture. Along the way, we prove a number of novel graph decomposition results which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that a large family of pairs of graphs satisfy a polynomial dependence in asymmetric graph removal lemmas. In particular, we give an unexpected answer to a question of Gishboliner, Shapira and Wigderson by showing that for every , there are ‐abundant graphs of chromatic number . Using similar methods, we also extend work of Ruzsa by proving that a set which avoids solutions with distinct integers to an equation of genus at least two has size . The best previous bound was and the exponent of is best possible in such a result. Finally, we investigate the relationship between polynomial dependencies in asymmetric removal lemmas and the problem of avoiding integer solutions to equations. The results suggest a potentially deep correspondence. Many open questions remain.

A spectral Erdős-Faudree-Rousseau theorem

Abstract:A well-known theorem of Mantel states that every $n$-vertex graph with more than $\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor $ edges contains a triangle. An interesting problem in extremal graph theory studies the minimum number of edges contained in triangles among graphs with a prescribed number of vertices and edges. Erdős, Faudree and Rousseau (1992) showed that a graph on $n$ vertices with more than $\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor $ edges contains at least $2\lfloor n/2\rfloor +1$ edges in triangles. Such edges are called triangular edges. In this paper, we present a spectral version of the result of Erdős, Faudree and Rousseau. Using the supersaturation-stability and the spectral technique, we prove that every $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $\lambda (G) \ge \sqrt{\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor}$ contains at least $2 \lfloor {n}/{2} \rfloor -1$ triangular edges, unless $G$ is a balanced complete bipartite graph. The method in our paper has some interesting applications. Firstly, the supersaturation-stability can be used to revisit a conjecture of Erdős concerning with the booksize of a graph, which was initially proved by Edwards (unpublished), and independently by Khadžiivanov and Nikiforov (1979). Secondly, our method can improve the bound on the order $n$ of a graph by dropping the condition on $n$ being sufficiently large, which is obtained from the triangle removal lemma. Thirdly, the supersaturation-stability can be applied to deal with the spectral extremal graph problems on counting triangles, which was recently studied by Ning and Zhai (2023).

On conjectures concerning the graph grabbing game

Abstract:We consider two conjectures made in regard to the graph grabbing game, played on a vertex weighted graph. Seacrest and Seacrest conjectured in 2012 that the first player can win the graph grabbing game on any even-order bipartite graph. Eoh and Choi conjectured a strengthening of this in 2019, namely that the first player can win on any graph with no induced corona product of an odd cycle and a point. We provide a family of counterexamples to the latter conjecture, and propose a weaker conjecture in its place. We also show that the above two conjectures are equivalent when the vertex weights are all $0$ or $1$.

Abstract:A graph G is 3-domination-critical if its domination number γ is 3 and the addition of any edge decreases γ by 1. Wojcicka conjectured that every 3-domination-critical graph with δ⩾2 has a hamiltonian cycle (J. Graph Theory 14 (1990) 205–215). The conjecture had been proved and its proof consists of two parts: the case α⩽δ+1 (J. Graph Theory 25 (1997) 173–184) and the case α=δ+2 (Discrete Appl. Math. 92 (1999) 57–70). In this paper, we give a new and simple proof of the conjecture by using Hanson's (J. Combin. Math. Combin. Comput. 13 (1993) 121–128) and Bondy-Chvátal's (Discrete Math. 15(1976) 111–135) closure operations.
On a Conjecture of Erdős on Locally Sparse Steiner Triple Systems

Abstract:A famous theorem of Kirkman says that there exists a Steiner triple system of order n if and only if n ≡ 1,3 mod 6. In 1973, Erdős conjectured that one can find so-called 'sparse' Steiner triple systems. Roughly speaking, the aim is to have at most j−3 triples on every set of j points, which would be best possible. (Triple systems with this sparseness property are also referred to as having high girth.) We prove this conjecture asymptotically by analysing a natural generalization of the triangle removal process. Our result also solves a problem posed by Lefmann, Phelps and Rödl as well as Ellis and Linial in a strong form, and answers a question of Krivelevich, Kwan, Loh and Sudakov. Moreover, we pose a conjecture which would generalize the Erdős conjecture to Steiner systems with arbitrary parameters and provide some evidence for this.

The 1/3-conjectures for domination in cubic graphs

Abstract:A set S of vertices in a graph G is a dominating set of G if every vertex not in S is adjacent to a vertex in S . The domination number of G, denoted by $\gamma$(G), is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set in G. In a breakthrough paper in 2008, L{ö}wenstein and Rautenbach proved that if G is a cubic graph of order n and girth at least 83, then $\gamma$(G) $\le$ n/3. A natural question is if this girth condition can be lowered. The question gave birth to two 1/3-conjectures for domination in cubic graphs. The first conjecture, posed by Verstraete in 2010, states that if G is a cubic graph on n vertices with girth at least 6, then $\gamma$(G) $\le$ n/3. The second conjecture, first posed as a question by Kostochka in 2009, states that if G is a cubic, bipartite graph of order n, then $\gamma$(G) $\le$n/3. In this paper, we prove Verstraete's conjecture when there is no 7-cycle and no 8-cycle, and we prove the Kostochka's related conjecture for bipartite graphs when there is no 4-cycle and no 8-cycle.

The irregularity strength of dense graphs -- on asymptotically optimal solutions of problems of Faudree, Jacobson, Kinch and Lehel

Abstract:The irregularity strength of a graph $G$, $s(G)$, is the least $k$ such that there exists a $\{1,2,\ldots,k\}$-weighting of the edges of $G$ attributing distinct weighted degrees to all vertices, or equivalently the least $k$ enabling obtaining a multigraph with nonrecurring degrees by blowing each edge $e$ of $G$ to at most $k$ copies of $e$. In 1991 Faudree, Jacobson, Kinch and Lehel asked for the optimal lower bound for the minimum degree of a graph $G$ of order $n$ which implies that $s(G)\leq 3$. More generally, they also posed a similar question regarding the upper bound $s(G)\leq K$ for any given constant $K$. We provide asymptotically tight solutions of these problems by proving that such optimal lower bound is of order $\frac{1}{K-1}n$ for every fixed integer $K\geq 3$.

A property on monochromatic copies of graphs containing a triangle

Abstract:A graph $H$ is called common and respectively, strongly common if the number of monochromatic copies of $H$ in a 2-edge-coloring $\phi$ of a large clique is asymptotically minimised by the random coloring with an equal proportion of each color and respectively, by the random coloring with the same proportion of each color as in $\phi$. A well-known theorem of Jagger, {\v S}t'ov{\' i}{\v c}ek and Thomason states that every graph containing a $K_4$ is not common. Here we prove an analogous result that every graph containing a $K_3$ and with at least four edges is not strongly common.

Abstract:We present a polynomial time reduction from gap-3LIN to label cover with 2-to-1 constraints. In the “yes” case the fraction of satisfied constraints is at least 1 −ε, and in the “no” case we show that this fraction is at most ε, assuming a certain (new) combinatorial hypothesis on the Grassmann graph. In other words, we describe a combinatorial hypothesis that implies the 2-to-1 conjecture with imperfect completeness. The companion submitted paper [Dinur, Khot, Kindler, Minzer and Safra, STOC 2018] makes some progress towards proving this hypothesis. Our work builds on earlier work by a subset of the authors [Khot, Minzer and Safra, STOC 2017] where a slightly different hypothesis was used to obtain hardness of approximating vertex cover to within factor of √2−ε. The most important implication of this work is (assuming the hypothesis) an NP-hardness gap of 1/2−ε vs. ε for unique games. In addition, we derive optimal NP-hardness for approximating the max-cut-gain problem, NP-hardness of coloring an almost 4-colorable graph with any constant number of colors, and the same √2−ε NP-hardness for approximate vertex cover that was already obtained based on a slightly different hypothesis. Recent progress towards proving our hypothesis [Barak, Kothari and Steurer, ECCC TR18-077], [Dinur, Khot, Kindler, Minzer and Safra, STOC 2018] directly implies some new unconditional NP-hardness results. These include new points of NP-hardness for unique games and for 2-to-1 and 2-to-2 games. More recently, the full version of our hypothesis was proven [Khot, Minzer and Safra, ECCC TR18-006].

Abstract:Let be a sequence of natural numbers. For a graph G, let denote the number of colourings of the edges of G with colours such that, for every , the edges of colour c contain no clique of order . Write to denote the maximum of over all graphs G on n vertices. There are currently very few known exact (or asymptotic) results for this problem, posed by Erdős and Rothschild in 1974. We prove some new exact results for : (i) A sufficient condition on which guarantees that every extremal graph is a complete multipartite graph, which systematically recovers all existing exact results. (ii) Addressing the original question of Erdős and Rothschild, in the case of length , the unique extremal graph is the complete balanced -partite graph, with colourings coming from Hadamard matrices of order . (iii) In the case , for which the sufficient condition in (i) does not hold, for , the unique extremal graph is complete k-partite with one part of size less than k and the other parts as equal in size as possible.
