Abstract:Comparative Literature is categorized among interdisciplinary studies and tries to bridge a gap between different and separated spheres of human studies. Adaptation studies is a subdivision of Comparative Literature that makes a bond between Literature and Cinema. Both Literature and Cinema are two different mediums or different means of expression. Each has its own language to convey meaning. While novel uses words, cinema uses visual and aural images to convey meaning. Linda Hutchean is a famous adaptation theorist and her theories are used by many critics. She categorizes four different parts for her theory. What? Who and Why? How? When and Where? Through these four main parts, she scrutinizes adaptation process. What, refers to the form, changes, gains and losses, using different tools to convey meaning. Who, refers to the adapter. She poses this question that in adaptation process who is the real adapter? Director, composer, screenplay writer or editor? Why, refers to the motivation of the adapter. She tries to find out different motivation of an adapter to adapt a work. When and Where, refers to the time and place of the adaptation process and its influence both during creation and reception process. In this thesis all of these four main parts of Hutcheon’s theory are scrutinized over 2013 adaptation of The Great Gatsby by Buz Luhrmann. Similarities and differences between a novel and film are illuminated through this research. By determining differences between a film and a novel, hidden and unhidden aspects of the novel will be illuminated and this is a pleasure that a comparatist seeks.

Abstract:Under the commercial development of today's film industry and the purpose of recreating excellent texts, there are many film adaptations based on excellent classic literary works. These adaptations attract both literary and film and television audiences. Through the analysis of the audition language and literary original work of The Great Gatsby (2013), this paper summarizes the aesthetic characteristics and limitations of adaptations from classic literature. According to the research, it can be concluded that film adaptations of classic literature bring the literature of some original works, insightful narration, and more aesthetic images to the screen. In the meantime, the characteristics of the film itself add limitations to the subjective world where the text could be extended endlessly. The key to overcoming the limitations is to go beyond the adaptation of "respecting the original work" and take an outright advantage of the characteristics that only films have and are difficult to ignore.

Abstract:: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald highlights various cultural characteristics of the Jazz Age. This paper will explore the cultural elements of the original novel and the 2013 film adaptation and its impact on its audience. Specifically, this paper focuses on the themes of a materialistic culture, hegemonic culture, the American Dream, the portrayal of women in the 1920s, and the racist ideology. During the Jazz Age, a period of economic prosperity and social change, materialism shaped people's values and pursuits. Through an in-depth analysis of the novel and the film, this paper will explore the characters' endless pursuit of material wealth and social status to show that there was also impatience, emptiness, and ruthlessness behind this era's wealth. Moreover, this paper will explore the concept of hegemonic culture and the dominance of upper class characters over the lower class people. By examining the class conflicts between old and new money, the nature of the upper-class social circle, and the set of society that the aristocracy benefited from, this paper aims to show how The Great Gatsby highlights the power dynamics between different socio-economic classes and the injustices caused by this hegemonic culture. Despite Jay Gatsby's pursuit of wealth, status, and desire for personal fulfillment, the pursuit of this ideal often comes at a price, and this paper will explore the downfalls and disillusionment of the American Dream, as well as the complexity and ambivalence of the American Dream in the Jazz Age. In addition, the paper explores the portrayal of women in The Great Gatsby and the limitations of these female characters as well as the broader context of gender dynamics during the Jazz Age, where despite the progress made by women in terms of their social status at the time, some limitations and negativity still existed for women. Finally, the paper will look at racist ideology through the character Tom Buchanan as an aristocratic white man.

Abstract:This research explores the portrayal of social inequality and how social inequality influence the social interactions and dynamics within each social class as depicted in the novel in F. Scott Fitzgerald's iconic novel, The Great Gatsby (1925). Drawing upon Goldmann’s genetic structuralism approach, the study delves into the socio-historical context of the novel to unravel the underlying structures governing characters' behaviors and narrative themes. The analysis identifies four key aspects of social inequality: 1) the American Dream, 2) economic inequality, 3) class distinction, and 4) gender inequality. Each aspect is shown to play a pivotal role in shaping the narrative and providing insights into the complexities of the social fabric of the time. Furthermore, the research examines how these aspects of social inequality influence social interactions and dynamics within each social class. It is revealed that social inequality not only dictates relationships and hierarchies but also perpetuates a cycle of aspiration, disillusionment, and moral decay. The characters' interactions are marked by a constant struggle for recognition, acceptance, and fulfillment within a system that values wealth and status above all else. Overall, this study is expected to offer a comprehensive analysis of social inequality in Fitzgerlad’s The Great Gatsby (1925), shedding light on its sociocultural significance and its enduring relevance in understanding societal dynamics.

Abstract:The Great Gatsby (1925) is considered the greatest literary achievement of Francis Scott Fitzgerald. Its first Polish translation was published in 1962. Presently, readers in Poland can choose from among six translations of this iconic work, with three of them added in 2021 and 2022, probably as a result of the entry of the book into the public domain in 2021. Fitzgerald, often regarded as a chronicler of the tumultuous Jazz Age in the United States, presents a socio-cultural narrative that invites reflection on how Polish translators dealt with the cultural elements and allusions pervasive in The Great Gatsby. This paper delves into selected cultural elements and allusions within the context of the five Polish translations of The Great Gatsby.

Abstract:The subject of the study is color symbolism in F. Fitzgerald’s novel «The Great Gatsby» in the aspect of an ambivalent understanding of the conceptual solution in the use of a certain color in creating images of characters, in describing the setting and semantic content of the ideological content of the work and its screen interpretations. The object of study is color as a meaning-forming concept in literature and cinema, the symbolism of color. The work of Francis S. Fitzgerald «The Great Gatsby» is of interest in the study of the influence of color palette. The main research methods are analytical and comparative historical. The color concepts of F. S. Fitzgerald's book “The Great Gatsby” and film adaptations are comprehended. This work by F. S. Fitzgerald is of interest to the modern Russian reader and viewer due to the fact that the problems raised in the novel are still relevant today. The writer touches on the popular theme of the American dream in literature and cinema. The story of the main characters is a vivid example of the illusory nature of this dream, and the lifestyle of the characters and their worldview demonstrate spiritual emptiness and cold indifference to everything except money and wealth. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the study of the ambivalence of perception of the coloristic solution of the images of characters in the book in comparison with its screen interpretations. The author comes to the conclusion that F. S. Fitzgerald in the novel «The Great Gatsby» uses a color palette in creating images of characters and describing the scene in such a way that the ambiguity in the perception of color most unexpectedly and sharply emphasizes the problems raised and becomes the basis for rethinking the ideological content of the work.

Abstract:The Great Gatsby is a novel that was written in 1925 by Scott Fitzgerald. it represents The American Dream and the desire of achieving it through the protagonist attempts to achieve The American Dream. The protagonist is Jay Gatsby he is a self-made man who belongs to the working class of society, he gained his wealth through the organized crime and illegal business, Jay was charmed by the lifestyle of the rich people and the identity of being one of them. He used his fortune to make incredible parties in his mansion showing his wealth power and to attract Daisy’s attention, the women he loves most. Gatsby represents the American dreamers who belong to the repressed class of society, this young generation who believes in The American Dream and the possibility of achieving it. The American Dream was created by the dominant class of society in order to control the economic system. The falsie fact that this dream was built upon is the social justice, the social equality that gives equal chances to everyone to achieve their desires via hard work without concern about their social background. The American Dream is mainly about either wealth obtaining which was the aspiration of these young working-class people or social ascendency. Gatsby despite his recent gained fortune and new identity as he changed his name from James to Jay Gatsby was not able to be a member of the bourgeoisies; he was rejected due to his social background. Therefore, the social equality concept was denied alongside the hard work and equality of chances in achieving The American Dream was denied by the illegal career of Gatsby.

Abstract:In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the American economy ascended, bringing unprecedented levels of affluence to the nation. The chaos of World War I left America in a state of distress, and the generation that fought the war turned to profligate living to recompense. In this novel, Fitzgerald found this new lifestyle seductive and, like Gatsby, he had always idolized the very rich. In this era, unrestrained materialism set the tone of society, which ends to the collapse of all characters and society. This novel represents Fitzgerald’s attempt to confront his conflicting feelings about the Jazz Age. Here we analyze major characters, symbols, themes and plot of this masterpiece as a tragedy, and a social novel. This creative work has been identified as one of the greatest novels of all time with Fitzgerald's incredible use of realism and symbolism. Moreover; there are some elements that make this work a modernistic and existential one. These key elements that made this work a success are obvious in the development of characters, plot, themes and setting throughout the novel. It is a highly symbolic meditation on 1920s America as a whole.

Abstract:The Great Gatsby is a masterpiece of the 1920s. Gatsby reflects that period of gendered, ethnic, and racial anxieties. The First World War and the industrial trajectory of the twentieth century have affected people and their perspective toward life, and races, driving them to dehumanize each other. The world has become a very raciest place constantly. Modernist authors depicted this dehumanization and racism in their works indirectly. Postcolonialism questions and reinvents the modes of artistic perception, the ways of viewing and being. Postcolonialism reading of the novel shows that the society of America in the twenties is separated between superior and inferior.' The Great Gatsby' is a masterwork of F. Scott Fitzgerald whereby the author presents colonial mentality, showing that despite being a modern novel, it also carries the central concept of postcolonialism novels. In this paper, the researcher will trace the characters' status as inferior and superior, showing how characters' behavior has degenerated under modern life's effect and how they show each other superiority. The colonial discourse also affected the colonizer as much as colonized since it is a way of being more than a way of thinking. The paper attempts to figure out the characters' elements of postcolonial discourse. This paper will focus on the main characters regardless of their role in the novel's plot to disclose their reaction toward each other. The paper confirms that Colonialism does not need a colonized population outside a country's geographical borders. Colonized people could be existed within the geographical boundaries of the colonizing country by maintaining the same ideology.

Abstract:This paper analyzes both the utopian and the dystopian aspects of American society in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s (1896-1940) The Great Gatsby (1925). It aims at depicting those aspects of the society through a careful examination of the settings, particularly East egg and the Valley of Ashes. The former represents the protagonist’s ideal reality in which he dreams of becoming famous, wealthy, and more satisfied. Yet, the climax and tragic ending of Gatsby reveal the dystopian aspects of East Egg society, such as chaos, prohibition, and social disintegration. Likewise, the valley of ashes is made out of ashes, and its gray color stands for emptiness and the moral decadence of its people. The social hierarchy of the American society, along with its expectations, demoralizes its people; the worldly desires of Gatsby ruin his life as well as the future he imagines in East Egg. Thus, a state of material well-being emerged but lacking in spiritual life or purpose. Throughout the novel, Gatsby’s life and shocking manners reflect those dystopian aspects of a post-war society in which wild parties, illegal drinking, and crimes prevail. Gatsby’s dream of becoming wealthy leaves him with a painful awareness of inferiority, isolation, and ultimately death.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The objectives of this research are to find out the relatedness between setting and characterization F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and to find out the relatedness between setting and plot in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. This research used library research method and used stuctural approach. So this only focus on the intrinsic elements which build the story as a literary work, such as plot, character, and setting. The result of the research shows that structural elements of F. Fizgerald’s The Great Gatsby present a solid unity. Each element has close relation with other elements in forming the wholeness of the story. Here, there is the relatedness between setting and plot and the relatedness between plot and character in F. Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby.
Film adaptation as the interface between creative translation and cultural transformation: The case of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby

Abstract:Adaptation is prominent in many facets of the creative industries, such as the performing arts (e.g. theatre, opera) and various forms of media (e.g. film, television, radio, video games). As such, adaptation can be regarded as the creative translation of a narrative from one medium or mode to another. This paper focuses on film adaptation and examines its role in cultural production and dissemination within the broader polysystem (Even-Zohar 1978a). Adaptation has been viewed as a process which can shed light on meaningful questions on a social, cultural and ideological level (cf. Casetti 2004; Corrigan 2014; Venuti 2007). Nevertheless, an integrated framework for the systematic analysis of adaptations seems to have remained under-researched. The paper puts forward a model for adaptation analysis which highlights the factors that condition adaptation as a process and as a product. In this way, adaptation is studied as a system monitored by economic, creative and social agendas which nevertheless transforms the communicating vessels of the literary system and the film industry. To illustrate this, the paper discusses how the two systems and various creative and socioeconomic considerations interlace in the latest film adaptation of The Great Gatsby (Luhrmann 2013). It concludes on the benefits of a holistic approach to adaptation.

Abstract:F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby (1925) is one of the best known and most widely read and taught novels in American literature. It is so familiar that even those who have not read it believe that they have and take for granted that they know about its main character and theme of the American Dream. We need to approach The Great Gatsby as if it were new and really read it, paying close attention to Fitzgerald's literary language. His novel gives us a vivid depiction of and insight into income inequality as it existed in the 1920s and, by extension, as it exists today, when the American Dream is even more limited to the fortunate few, not within reach of the many. When we really read The Great Gatsby, we perceive and understand the American dimension of the novel and appreciate, too, the global range and relevance that in it Fitzgerald has achieved. It is a great American book and a great book of world literature.

Abstract:F. Scott Fitzgerald is regarded as the spokesman of the American "Jazz Age." "Jazz Age" denotes the temporal span, including 1919 to 1929. The economy flourished during this particular period in American history, leading to a significant shift in societal ideals. Consequently, a discernible decline emerged in individuals' cognitive and ethical faculties. The Great Gatsby, a literary work that portrays the terrible existence of Gatsby and carries notable scholarly and pragmatic ramifications, symbolizes the disintegration of the "American Dream." The cohort of individuals in the United States, commonly called the "lost generation" during the 1920s, saw a notable discrepancy between their aspirational objectives and the prevailing realities of their day. This study examines the fundamental significance of Gatsby's interpretation of the "American Dream" and uncovers the inescapable inevitability of Gatsby's sad demise and the disillusionment associated with the "American Dream" through a thorough analysis of the primary textual elements inside the novel. The primary aim of this essay is to enhance readers' understanding of the widespread appeal of riches and worldly possessions while encouraging them to reflect on the development of moral, healthful, and dynamic principles.

Abstract:This article uses Robert Merton's ‘Strain Theory’ and Agnew's ‘General Strain Theory’ to investigate the manifestations of deviant behavior in F. Scott Fitzgerald's seminal novel The Great Gatsby. This study delves into the socioeconomic and psychological strains experienced by the novel's characters using meticulous textual analysis as its methodology, shedding light on the intricate dynamics between societal expectations, individual aspirations, and the pursuit of the elusive American Dream. By combining the tenets of Strain Theory with the narrative landscape of the novel, this research elucidates how economic disenfranchisement, materialistic obsessions, and psychological pressures contribute to the portrayal of deviance and disillusionment among the characters. Furthermore, this analysis sheds light on the underlying sociological realities of the Roaring Twenties era, providing a nuanced understanding of the complexities involved in pursuing the American Dream, as well as the implications for societal norms and individual behavior. Finally, this article contributes to the discourse on American literature and sociological theory by elucidating the enduring relevance of Strain Theories in understanding the complexities of human behavior and social dynamics in the context of Fitzgerald's masterwork.

Abstract:This study aims to disclose the cultural reflection of post-colonialism in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby. This research uses analytical approach of post-colonial literature in the form of colonial behavior passed down to the weak, namely the colonized who consciously or unconsciously becomes the object of ideological oppression and power hegemony. The data collection techniques were reading, identifying, classifying, interpreting, inferring. The results of the analysis of events in the novel suggest that the descriptions of the colonized ideology are in the forms of hybrid ideology, mimicry, ethnicism, racism, sexism, and classism. The author describes that Gatsby has reflected ideology of hybrid, mimicry, racism, and ethnicism in his struggle to change his social status to be a rich man designated as the Jazz to attract Desy, his former girlfriend who has left him to marry Tom who has reflected ideology of classism and sexism to the colonialized native inhabitant.

Abstract:The ‘American Dream’ and its relationship to American literature has long been a subject of extensive research. This article strives to portray the ‘American Dream’ in Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. The ‘American Dream’ represents the idea that people can achieve anything if they follow their dreams. Fitzgerald paints a picture of the people of the Jazz Age who are driven by their passion for wealth and possessions. The ideals and hopes behind the ‘American Dream’ are illustrated in the novel through hopelessness, as the characters lose themselves in an illusion when they see it as an ideal. F. Scott Fitzgerald explores the influence of the ‘American Dream’ on his characters in each of his stories. In this vein, the article attempts to show how the ‘American Dream’ is seen in the context of American history and culture. This novel provides an excellent background for later research and a foundation for describing stories that come from Jazz Age culture
