Abstract:Multi-focus image fusion is to extract the focused regions from the multiple images of the same scene and combine them together to produce one fully focused image. The key is to find the focused regions from the source images. In this paper, we transform the problem of finding the focused regions to find the boundaries between the focused and defocused regions in the source images, and propose a novel image fusion method via boundary finding and a multi-scale morphological focus-measure. Firstly, a morphological focus-measure, consisted of multi- scale morphological gradients, is proposed to measure the focus of the images. Secondly, a novel boundary finding method is presented, which utilizes the relations of the focus information of the source images. Thirdly, the found boundaries naturally segment the source images into regions with the same focus condition and the focused regions can be simply selected by comparing the focus-measures of the corresponding regions. Fourthly, the detected focused regions are reconstructed to obtain the decision map for the multi-focus image fusion. Finally, the fused image is produced according to the decision map and the given fusion rule. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed algorithm outperforms other spatial domain fusion algorithms.

Abstract:Multi-focus image fusion is an important technique that extracts sharpness regions from multiple images and composites them into a fully focused image. In this paper, a novel spatial domain based fusion algorithm for multi-focus image through gradient based decision map construction using morphology and active contour model is proposed. Firstly, the original focus maps are constructed based on the gradient of the images. Secondly, the coarse focus maps are produced by employing convolution on the original focus maps with a weighted kernel and then the final focus map is decided by the coarse focus maps. Thirdly, the original fusion decision map is obtained by processing the final focus map with morphological opening-and-closing operations and small object removing operation. Fourthly, the extracted boundaries are used as the initial value of the free boundary conditions active contour model and the final decision map is acquired according the original decision map and the boundary map. Finally, the fused image is produced based on the final decision map and the fusion rule. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than the other five representative fusion algorithms in both the qualitative and quantitative evaluations.

Abstract:This paper presented a simple algorithm for fusion of multi-focus color images. The algorithm was developed in HSI space where the intensity component was not very sensitive to noise. First, an initial decision map was generated by computing the classical SML (sum-modified-laplacian) as the pixels’ focus measure using the intensity component; second, by subtracting one of multi-focus images from another, a coarse edge map was obtained to refine the initial decision map; third, a fast region-filling method was used to build the final decision map; fourth, a soft fusion strategy was applied to the transition zone between focused and defocused regions and a nice-looking fused image was generated. Experiments showed that the algorithm was effective and the results were acceptable.

Abstract:Since it is usually difficult to capture an all-in-focus image of a 3D scene directly, various multi-focus image fusion methods are employed to generate it from several images focusing at different depths. However, the performance of existing methods is barely satisfactory and often degrades for areas near the focused/defocused boundary (FDB). In this paper, a boundary aware method using deep neural network is proposed to overcome this problem. (1) Aiming to acquire improved fusion images, a 2-channel deep network is proposed to better extract the relative defocus information of the two source images. (2) After analyzing the different situations for patches far away from and near the FDB, we use two networks to handle them respectively. (3) To simulate the reality more precisely, a new approach of dataset generation is designed. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods, both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Abstract:We propose a new image fusion method to fuse the frames of infrared and visual image sequences more effectively. In our method, we introduce an improved salient feature detection algorithm to achieve the saliency map of the original frames. This improved method can detect not only spatially but also temporally salient features using dynamic information of inter-frames. Images are then segmented into target regions and background regions based on saliency distribution. We formulate fusion rules for different regions using a double threshold method and finally fuse the image frames in NSCT multi-scale domain. Comparison of different methods shows that our result is a more effective one to stress salient features of target regions and maintain details of background regions from the original image sequences.

Abstract:The purpose of multi-focus image fusion is integrating the partially focused images into one single image which is focused everywhere. To achieve this purpose, we propose a new quadtree-based algorithm for multi-focus image fusion. In this work, an effective quadtree decomposition strategy is presented. According to the proposed decomposition strategy, the source images are decomposed into blocks with optimal sizes in a quadtree structure. And in this tree structure, the focused regions are detected by using a new weighted focus-measure, named as the sum of the weighted modified Laplacian. Finally, the focused regions could be well extracted from the source images and reconstructed to produce one fully focused image. Moreover, the new weighted focus-measure performs better than the commonly used focus-measures on the detection of the focused regions, since it is sensitive to the homogeneous regions. The proposed algorithm is simple yet effective, because of the quadtree decomposition strategy and the new weighted focus-measure. To do the comparison, the proposed algorithm is compared with several existing fusion algorithms, in both the qualitative and quantitative ways. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm yields good results.

Abstract:Multi-focus image fusion is an important technique that extracts sharp regions from multiple images and composites them into a fully focused image. In this paper, a novel spatial domain-based fusion algorithm for multi-focus images through gradient-based decision map construction and mathematical morphology is proposed. The contributions of this paper are: 1) a weighted kernel based on image gradient is proposed to measure focus regions; 2) the boundaries between focus and defocus regions are adjusted by morphological operations and free boundary condition-based active contour model. Though the weighted kernel, the focus regions are roughly identified. Moreover, after the morphological operations and the adjustment of boundaries using active contour model, the true boundaries between the focused and defocused regions are extracted. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm performs better than the other eight representative fusion algorithms in both the qualitative and quantitative evaluations.

Abstract:Multi-focus image fusion technology is to extract different focused regions of the same scene among partially focused images and merge them together to generate a composite image where all objects are clear. Two crucial points to multi-focus image fusion are the effective focus measurement method to evaluate the sharpness of the source images and the accurate segmentation method to extract the focused regions. In conventional multi-focus image fusion methods, the decision map obtained according to the focus measurement is sensitive to mis-registration, or produces an uneven boundary lines. In this paper, the maximum value in the top-hat transform and the bottom-hat transform is used as the gradient measurement value, and the complementary features between multiple scales are used to achieve accurate focus measurement for initial segmentation. In order to obtain a better fusion decision map, a robust image matting algorithm is used to refine the trimap generated by the initial segmentation. Then, make full use of the strong correlation between the source images to optimize the edge regions of the decision map to improve the image fusion quality. Finally, a fusion image is constructed based on the fusion decision map and the source images. We perform qualitative and quantitative experiments on publicly available databases to verify the effectiveness of the method. The results show that compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms, the proposed fusion method can obtain accurate decision maps and achieve better performance in visual perception and quantitative analysis.

Abstract:Due to the limited length of depth in camera, sometimes it is hard to capture a scenario focusing on all objects. This problem can be solved by taking multiple images, focusing on different parts, and fusing them into one image. How to select the pixels, which lies in the focus depth, with higher clarity, is still open. In this paper, a multi-focus image fusion method with structure-driven adaptive regions is proposed. By making use of the shared self-similarity in images, adaptive regions are estimated and the charities in these regions are counted. Experimental results show that the proposed approach preserves images edges better than image fusion methods with fixed size regions and the compared multi-scale decomposition domain image fusion methods.

Abstract:A novel multi-focus image fusion algorithm performed in spatial domain based on similarity characteristics is proposed incorporating with region segmentation. In this paper, a new similarity measure is developed based on the structural similarity (SSIM) index, which is more suitable for multi-focus image segmentation. Firstly, the SSNSIM map is calculated between two input images. Then we segment the SSNSIM map using watershed method, and merge the small homogeneous regions with fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm (FCM). For three source images, a joint region segmentation method based on segmentation of two images is used to obtain the final segmentation result. Finally, the corresponding segmented regions of the source images are fused according to their average gradient. The performance of the image fusion method is evaluated by several criteria including spatial frequency, average gradient, entropy, edge retention etc. The evaluation results indicate that the proposed method is effective and has good visual perception.

Abstract:Considering the continuous advancement in the field of imaging sensor, a host of other new issues have emerged. A major problem is how to find focus areas more accurately for multi-focus image fusion. The multi-focus image fusion extracts the focused information from the source images to construct a global in-focus image which includes more information than any of the source images. In this paper, a novel multi-focus image fusion based on Laplacian operator and region optimization is proposed. The evaluation of image saliency based on Laplacian operator can easily distinguish the focus region and out of focus region. And the decision map obtained by Laplacian operator processing has less the residual information than other methods. For getting precise decision map, focus area and edge optimization based on regional connectivity and edge detection have been taken. Finally, the original images are fused through the decision map. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the other series of algorithms in terms of both subjective and objective evaluations.

Abstract:Multi-focus image fusion is an important method used to combine the focused parts from source multi-focus images into a single full-focus image. Currently, to address the problem of multi-focus image fusion, the key is on how to accurately detect the focus regions, especially when the source images captured by cameras produce anisotropic blur and unregistration. This paper proposes a new multi-focus image fusion method based on the multi-scale decomposition of complementary information. Firstly, this method uses two groups of large-scale and small-scale decomposition schemes that are structurally complementary, to perform two-scale double-layer singular value decomposition of the image separately and obtain low-frequency and high-frequency components. Then, the low-frequency components are fused by a rule that integrates image local energy with edge energy. The high-frequency components are fused by the parameter-adaptive pulse-coupled neural network model (PA-PCNN), and according to the feature information contained in each decomposition layer of the high-frequency components, different detailed features are selected as the external stimulus input of the PA-PCNN. Finally, according to the two-scale decomposition of the source image that is structure complementary, and the fusion of high and low frequency components, two initial decision maps with complementary information are obtained. By refining the initial decision graph, the final fusion decision map is obtained to complete the image fusion. In addition, the proposed method is compared with 10 state-of-the-art approaches to verify its effectiveness. The experimental results show that the proposed method can more accurately distinguish the focused and non-focused areas in the case of image pre-registration and unregistration, and the subjective and objective evaluation indicators are slightly better than those of the existing methods.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a novel multiscale transform decomposition model for multi-focus image fusion to get a better fused performance. The motivation of the proposed fusion framework is to make full use of the decomposition characteristics of multiscale transform. The nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) is firstly used to decompose the source multi-focus images into low-frequency (LF) and several high-frequency (HF) bands to separate out the two basic characteristics of source images, i.e., principal information and edge details. The common “average” and “max-absolute” fusion rules are performed on low- and high-frequency components, respectively, and a basic fusion image is generated. Then the difference images between the basic fused image and the source images are calculated, and the energy of the gradient (EOG) of difference images are utilized to refine the basic fused image by integrating average filter and median filter. Visual and quantitative using fusion metrics like VIFF, Q S , MI, Q AB/F , SD, Q PC and running time comparisons to state-of-the-art algorithms demonstrate the out-performance of the proposed fusion technique.

Abstract:Multi-focus image fusion integrates images from multiple focus regions of the same scene in focus to produce a fully focused image. However, the accurate retention of the focused pixels to the fusion result remains a major challenge. This study proposes a multi-focus image fusion algorithm based on Hessian matrix decomposition and salient difference focus detection, which can effectively retain the sharp pixels in the focus region of a source image. First, the source image was decomposed using a Hessian matrix to obtain the feature map containing the structural information. A focus difference analysis scheme based on the improved sum of a modified Laplacian was designed to effectively determine the focusing information at the corresponding positions of the structural feature map and source image. In the process of the decision-map optimization, considering the variability of image size, an adaptive multiscale consistency verification algorithm was designed, which helped the final fused image to effectively retain the focusing information of the source image. Experimental results showed that our method performed better than some state-of-the-art methods in both subjective and quantitative evaluation.

Abstract:This paper proposes a method based on multi-dictionary linear sparse representation and region fusion model for achieving high-quality multi-focus image fusion (MFIF). First, a multi-dictionary linear sparse representation model (MDLSR) is proposed for focus detection of source images, in which the focus information of the source image is characterized using linear coefficients between the dictionary and the input image, while the dictionary is a set of images including the source images. MDLSR exploits the correlation of feature information among local neighborhoods of the source image, and this feature significantly improves the accuracy of focus detection. Next, we propose an edge-weighting closed-form matting (EWCM) to define the source image focus boundary accurately. EWCM calculates the weights at each position in a content-adaptive manner, suppressing the effects of vignetting artifacts near the edges to preserve more edge details. Then, to avoid the focused/defocused boundary (FDB) region fusion problem caused by the defocus spread effect (DSE), we propose a region fusion model (RFM) for the MFIF, which uses correction and compensation to mitigate this problem. Finally, we also adopt an iterative update approach to improve the quality of the fused images. These designs achieve a win-win situation regarding fusion performance and realization ability. The experimental results on four typical datasets show that our method outperforms 37 state-of-the-art methods in terms of subjective visual effect, objective metric analysis and generalization ability. Abstract:Capturing an all-in-focus image with a single camera is difficult since the depth of field of the camera is usually limited. An alternative method to obtain the all-in-focus image is to fuse several images that are focused at different depths. However, existing multi-focus image fusion methods cannot obtain clear results for areas near the focused/defocused boundary (FDB). In this article, a novel α-matte boundary defocus model is proposed to generate realistic training data with the defocus spread effect precisely modeled, especially for areas near the FDB. Based on this α-matte defocus model and the generated data, a cascaded boundary-aware convolutional network termed MMF-Net is proposed and trained, aiming to achieve clearer fusion results around the FDB. Specifically, the MMF-Net consists of two cascaded subnets for initial fusion and boundary fusion. These two subnets are designed to first obtain a guidance map of FDB and then refine the fusion near the FDB. Experiments demonstrate that with the help of the new α-matte boundary defocus model, the proposed MMF-Net outperforms the state-of-the-art methods both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Abstract:<p>Image fusion method can provide a high-quality image by merging the multiple features of different source images, and how to effectively evaluate the quality (informativeness) of image features is an important issue for image fusion. Because a considerable amount of imprecise and uncertain information exists in image fusion processes, this paper proposes a framework based on the fuzzy set theory to handle the vague features, and a set of hybrid optimization methods is also designed to improve the performance. First, the two-scale decomposition method is utilized to decompose the source images and obtain a set of corresponding subimages. Second, the fuzzy set theory and local spatial frequency are employed to generate preliminary decision maps by evaluating the pixel quality of the subimages. Third, a morphological method and consistency verification are utilized to optimize the decision maps to extract the focused and unfocused regions. Finally, three schemes are designed to generate the fused images according to the optimized decision maps. The experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve competitive performance compared with other methods.</p>

Abstract:To address the problems of artifacts and information residuals in existing multi-focus image fusion algorithms, this paper proposes a multi-focus image algorithm based on region detection and the ACS network. First, region detection is used to identify the focus and boundary regions, allowing for the creation of an initial fusion image. Second, the ACS network learns the fusion rules for multi-focus images, which results in a network fusion image. Finally, using the boundary region information, the initial and network fusion images are weighted and combined to create the final fused image. The experimental results show that the algorithm outperforms other comparative algorithms in both the focus region and the boundary region, and the evaluation indexes are improved by more than 4.8% and 1.5%, respectively; at the same time, the subjective effect is more in line with the HVS, and there are no visual artifacts in various regions.

Abstract:Multi-focus image fusion is a technique that merges partially focused images to create a totally focused image. However, most existing focus measures suffer from inaccurate detection of low-frequency regions. This study introduces a novel focus measure called the sum of Gaussian-based fractional order differentiation (SGFD). Unlike traditional integer order differential operators, fractional order differential operators can retain more low-frequency information. As a result, SGFD outperforms conventional focus measures. The process begins with the initial fusion using the nonsubsampled shearlet transform (NSST) and SGFD, which produces the initial fused image and its corresponding difference images. Additionally, the feature map of SGFD is extracted from the source image, and the initial decision map is obtained through quadtree decomposition. Further refinement of the initial decision map yields the final decision map. Furthermore, residual regions are derived from the initial difference images and the final decision map. With residual removal, the final fused image is generated from the initial fused image. Extensive experiments are carried out to compare the proposed approach to 11 state-of-the-art approaches. The results demonstrate that the proposed SGFD-based approach surpasses the others regarding subjective visual quality and objective metrics.

Abstract:Multi-focus image fusion is a process of generating fused images by merging multiple images with different degrees of focus in the same scene. In multi-focus image fusion, the accuracy of the detected focus area is critical for improving the quality of the fused image. Combining the structural gradient, we propose a multi-focus color image fusion algorithm based on low vision image reconstruction and focus feature extraction. First, the source images are input into the deep residual network (ResNet) to conduct the low vision image reconstructed by the super-resolution method. Next, an end-to-end restoration model is used to improve the image details and maintain the edges of the image through rolling guidance filter. What's more, the difference image is obtained from the reconstructed image and the source image. Then, the fusion decision map is generated based on the focus area detection method based on structural gradient. Finally, the source image and the fusion decision map are used for weighted fusion to generate a fusion image. Experimental results show that our algorithm is quite accurate in detecting the edge of the focus area. Compared with other algorithms, the proposed algorithm improves the recognition accuracy of decision focus and defocused areas. It can well retain the detailed texture features and edge structure of the source image.
