Abstract:The spectral radius of a graph is the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of the graph. Let $T^*(n,\Delta ,l)$ be the tree which minimizes the spectral radius of all trees of order $n$ with exactly $l$ vertices of maximum degree $\Delta $. In this paper, $T^*(n,\Delta ,l)$ is determined for $\Delta =3$, and for $l\le 3$ and $n$ large enough. It is proven that for sufficiently large $n$, $T^*(n,3,l)$ is a caterpillar with (almost) uniformly distributed legs, $T^*(n,\Delta ,2)$ is a dumbbell, and $T^*(n,\Delta ,3)$ is a tree consisting of three distinct stars of order $\Delta $ connected by three disjoint paths of (almost) equal length from their centers to a common vertex. The unique tree with the largest spectral radius among all such trees is also determined. These extend earlier results of Lov\' asz and Pelik\'an, Simi\' c and To\u si\' c, Wu, Yuan and Xiao, and Xu, Lin and Shu.

Abstract:Let μ(G) denote the spectral radius of a graph G. We partly confirm a conjecture due to Nikiforov, which is a spectral radius analogue of the well-known Erdős-Sós Conjecture that any tree of order t is contained in a graph of average degree greater than t−2. Let Sn,k be the graph obtained by joining every vertex of a complete graph on k vertices to every vertex of an independent set of order n−k, and let Sn,k+ be the graph obtained from Sn,k by adding a single edge joining two vertices of the independent set of Sn,k. In 2010, Nikiforov conjectured that for a given integer k, every graph G of sufficiently large order n with μ(G)≥μ(Sn,k+) contains all trees of order 2k+3, unless G=Sn,k+. We confirm this conjecture for trees with diameter at most four, with one exception. In fact, we prove the following stronger result for k≥8. If a graph G with sufficiently large order n satisfies μ(G)≥μ(Sn,k) and G≠Sn,k, then G contains all trees of order 2k+3 with diameter at most four, except for the tree obtained from a star on k+2 vertices by subdividing each of its k+1 edges once.

Abstract:Let Q(G)=D(G)+A(G) be the signless Laplacian matrix of a simple graph of order n, where D(G) and A(G) are the degree diagonal matrix and the adjacency matrix of G, respectively. In this paper, we present a sharp upper bound for the signless spectral radius of G without any tree and characterize all extremal graphs which attain the upper bound, which may be regarded as a spectral extremal version for the famous Erdős-Sós conjecture.

Abstract:Let G be a simple connected undirected graph. The Laplacian spectral ratio of G is defined as the quotient between the largest and second smallest Laplacian eigenvalues of G , which is an important parameter in graph theory and networks. We obtain some bounds of the Laplacian spectral ratio in terms of the number of the spanning trees and the sum of powers of the Laplacian eigenvalues. In addition, we study the extremal Laplacian spectral ratio among trees with n vertices, which improves some known results of Z. You and B. Liu (2012).

Abstract:In this paper, some properties of the discrete p-Laplacian spectral radius of weighted trees have been investigated. These results are used to characterize all extremal weighted trees with the largest p-Laplacian spectral radius among all weighted trees with a given degree sequence and a positive weight set. Abstract:We study limit points of the spectral radii of Laplacian matrices of graphs. We adapted the method used by J. B. Shearer in 1989, devised to prove the density of adjacency limit points of caterpillars, to Laplacian limit points. We show that this fails, in the sense that there is an interval for which the method produces no limit points. Then we generalize the method to Laplacian limit points of linear trees and prove that it generates a larger set of limit points. The results of this manuscript may provide important tools for proving the density of Laplacian limit points in $[4.38+, \infty)$.

Feng [Minimizing the Laplacian eigenvalues for trees with given domination number, Linear Algebra Appl., 419 (2006) 648-655.] gave the tree in T-n,T-gamma with the greatest value of the Laplacian spectral radius. In this paper, we give another proof of this result. Using our method, we can go further beyond L. Feng by giving the tree in T-n,T-gamma (where n >= 2 gamma+1) with the second largest value of the Laplacian spectral radius.

Abstract:The spanning tree packing number of a graph G $G$, denoted by tau(G) $\tau (G)$, is the maximum number of edge-disjoint spanning trees contained in G $G$. The study of tau(G) $\tau (G)$ is one of the classic problems in graph theory. Cioaba and Wong initiated to investigate tau(G) $\tau (G)$ from spectral perspectives in 2012 and since then, tau(G) $\tau (G)$ has been well studied using the second-largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix in the past decade. In this paper, we further extend the results in terms of the number of edges and the spectral radius, respectively; and prove tight sufficient conditions to guarantee tau(G)>= k $\tau (G)\ge k$ with extremal graphs characterized. Moreover, we confirm a conjecture of Ning, Lu, and Wang on characterizing graphs with the maximum spectral radius among all graphs with a given order as well as fixed minimum degree and fixed edge connectivity. Our results have important applications in rigidity and nowhere-zero flows. We conclude with some open problems in the end.

GUO [Guo, Linear Algebra Appl. 368:379–385, 2003.] determined the largest value of Laplacian spectral radii μ(T) of the trees T in ${\mathcal{T}(2k)}$ and gave the corresponding tree T in ${\mathcal{T}(2k)}$ whose μ(T) reaches this largest value.
